THE HIGHTAILERS RETURN TO DAN ELECTRO'S
Tomorrow Night - Saturday, October 2nd)
Why has it been so long?
----------
There has been a bunch of postings on a couple of internet discussion groups, regarding the return of THE HIGHTAILERS to Dan Electro's Guitar Bar tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 2nd). There are many people (including THE HIGHTAILERS) who are thrilled that the band will return to former stomping grounds. People have expressed this change in mostly positive terms, but there has been a bit of talk that could seem to border on the negative, if one weren't fully aware of the situation from which they sprang.

So, I'm here to set the record straight.

Dan Electro's Guitar Bar is evolving from one positive situation to another positive situation.

For the totally uninitiated - Dr. Poison Zoomack recently closed his famous neighborhood bar, as part of his move from Houston to Moulton, Texas. Dr. Zoomack was the loving proprietor of the Heights Guitar Shop, too.

He resisted offers to buy Dan Electro's from many. He really wanted to find Dan Electro's a good, fitting new owner, or no new owner at all. At the last minute, Bob Edwards stepped up. He and Mel Belle became the new 'curators' (as they love to say) of this Houston Heights institution.

This is a magical place. The vibe is right! This is the place where Billy Gibbons and Richard Gere jammed with Heath Spencer Philip! Where Gregg Allman's roadies wheeled the stuff in on jam night, and kept the place open all night. And - this is the place where many locals have played the best sets of their lives. Ask anybody! Ask Carolyn Wonderland! Ask Billy Joe Shaver! Ask Beans Barton! Ask me - but I just told ya!

Dr. Zoomack is one of those guys who have their venue as an extention of their music.

Sometimes, like Zoomack, they are musicians themselves. Other times, they are true music lovers. What sets them apart is their priorities. While the nature and demand of any busines is to make money, the usual inclination is to make adjustments (as needed) to make more money and grow the business. It is the resistance to that last part which sets these people apart. These people prioritize the music. Sure - they have to make enough to support the business, bills, employees, licenses, etc., but they book the music they love and believe in, rather than change the entertainment in order to sell more beer.

Dr. Zoomack is one of those guys. If he likes your music and your efforts to make that music better and better, he'll book you. If the house is empty, but he enjoyed your stuff, he'll probably book you again. That doesn't happen everywhere.

On the flip-side, if you fill the house, and the venue sells more beer than ever before, but perform music he doesn't enjoy - you are not coming back!

Gotta admire that.

He's not the only one. Tom McClendon at The Big Easy on Kirby comes to mind. Tom says he "books only blues and Louisiana R&B because he knows what he likes and doesn't want to f**k around".

Gotta admire that, too.

So - THE HIGHTAILERS return to Dan Electro's Guitar Bar tomorrow night!

On the internet chat groups, all the talk is about why they haven't been there for so long. Even Hightailers drummer, Randy Woodard, was spotted on the Texas-Tribe group,  chiming in on the subject. Stories are being slung about one legendary late-night show in the late nineties which didn't stop at 2am on a night Dr. Zoomack was ready to close at 2am, (it's the law, you know). THE HIGHTAILERS  were banned. A year or two later, there was one last show, billed as something like THE HIGHTAILERS TRIUMPHANT PROBATIONARY RETURN TO DAN ELECTRO'S GUITAR BAR. On that night, they were too loud...

Well, now Dan Electro's will have music and musicians that Bob & Mel Belle dig.

So - THE HIGHTAILERS return to Dan Electro's Guitar Bar tomorrow night!

I understand this very well. After several years, we had been effectively banned, too.

But it hadn't always been that way.

It was because Dr. Zoomack dug what we were doing, that he allowed us to bring new original material to the stage at the old Dan Electro's blues jam. The New Jack Hippies Band came together there. Only Zoomack had the say on whether my not-always-blues stuff would be allowed, but he enjoyed it, so it was OK.

For a couple years, The New Jack Hippies played there every month or two.

Then, on the night of my very first 'Bluesguy's Birthday Jam', held at Dan Electro's, my son, LEVON LOUIS, got onstage with the band, Gloria Edwards and Heath Spencer Philip, and he rapped for a couple minutes. During that night, there were twenty Hippies onstage before it was over. At a New jack Hippies show - anything musical can happen!

The next time I emailed for a date for the band, Zoomack gave me a couple open dates a few months ahead, but asked about who would be onstage with The New Jack Hippies those nights. I responded that I didn't know for sure, since there are always auxillairy Hippies who show up unannounced, but that most of our recent gigs were 4 or 5 piece with Roger, Chaz, Leesa and I and sometimes Teri.

He asked me to let him know when I was certain. I responded that I'd never know for sure, four months in advance, exactly who would be there. He responded that he only wanted to be certain that there would be no "rappers, head-bangers, rappers, whiney folk-singers, rappers..." and more... I also know that a couple of our younger sometimes-auxilliary players had been recently banned for being too loaded  to stand...

I got the message. We never played a gig at Dan Electro's again.

Well, now Dan Electro's will have music and musicians that Bob & Mel Belle dig.

So - THE HIGHTAILERS return to Dan Electro's Guitar Bar tomorrow night!

And GUY SCHWARTZ & THE NEW JACK HIPPIES will play there next Friday night, too!

Bob and Mel Belle have already featured D.R.U.M.'s urban music and P.J. Whitehouse with a hard-rocking band full of the remnants of Pure Rubbish. They'll be open 5 days a week. Bob's promised to feature some whiney folk-singers amongst the acts he books for the soon-to-begin acoustic weekday afternoon shows, too!
