This year I'm touring as a solo, while using the laptop for mixing a rock album recorded with the trio, and a blues album recorded with the band and friends. It's an odd tour, with it's focus on House Concerts from which we can webcast, Online Radio Stations and Webcam Communities, along with the more traditional venues (festivals, clubs, cafes), and some serious vacationing mixed in as well.

I will split time between solo appearances, film making, camping/vacationing , and appearances with local musicians in every locale. If you are interested in doing a show in your area with me, or just want to offer a venue suggestion, meal or a bed for the night, hit reply!

An artist may make up to 100 songs available for one's listening pleasure!

KPFT's OPEN JOURNAL
MArlo On Monday

KPFT allows anyone to submit a program
to be aired on their OPEN JOURNAL at noon on weekdays.

MArlo's Open Journal on KPFT 90.1FM airs on Monday at noon.

She's in the process/mindset of putting together an idea for a weekly program which highlights all of the other programs on KPFT - sort of a one-stop clip show where you can find a summary of some of the coming week's programming. I think it's a good idea, and would be very helpful in allowing our community to sort out some of the varied and diverse (and sometimes confusing) programming schedule on this local treasure of a radio station.

The KPFT archive website has an awesome amount of programming available for download. A program for download on the KPFT website - like the one MArlo is developing  - would allow anyone to quickly hear an overview of the weeks programming, including clips from shows from the HD channels and other new downloadable media.

I'll be listening...   and maybe submitting a program of my own!

Great news! MArlo is going, too!

In case you didn't read last week's letter, this year I'm touring as a solo, while using the laptop for mixing a rock album recorded with the trio, and a blues album recorded with the band and friends. It's an odd tour, with it's focus on House Concerts from which we can webcast, Online Radio Stations and Webcam Communities, along with the more traditional venues (festivals, clubs, cafes), and some serious vacationing mixed in as well.

I will split time between solo appearances, film making, camping/vacationing, and appearances with local musicians in every locale. If you are interested in doing a show in your area with me, or just want to offer a venue suggestion, meal or a bed for the night, hit reply!

We'll be headed north from Texas the first week of August , then across eastern Canada, then New England and back down the east coast towards North Carolina, then southwestward towards home in the middle of September.

Most of it is roughly routed but not yet booked, so all help is welcome.

I'll travel thru TX, OK MO, KS, IA, IL, IN, MI, Ontario, Quebec, NY, NH, VT, ME, CT, MA & NYC In August. In September, we'll hit NJ, PA, DE, DC, MD, VA, NC, TN, AL, AR & TX. Anyone in those places wanna throw a house concert or know of some cool musicians or an appropriate venue? Hit reply!

Our first live show using this particular technology was my Birthday Jam in February (in our back yard), when Randy Soffar came over and webcast us on Stickam.com from his laptop. Randy had introduced me to the stickam technology a couple months earlier on my Imaginary Tour of Jams & Open Mics. At the birthday jam, my daughter Chelsea was the only one watching (from West Hollywood), as sets we're played by Mandy Mercier, Big Al Bettis, TC & The Cannonballs, as well as my own New Jack Hippies, but our one viewer was enough to give us all a big kick!

The other night, when we played acoustically from my video editing studio, we had 58 viewers/listeners visit us, including Big Rich from Ming's (and LeAnn), our buddy Dennis and his Mary, Ropeman & Markes from The Grow Room, Harold from Planet Texas Radio, Randy Soffar, Chelsea with Ryan Westbrook from The Thinking Plyers, and many new friends, as well!

Lotta music for me in these next 24 hours or so!

We'll be amongst the largest line-up of bands at the FREE PRESS HOUSTON's Westheimer Block Party tomorrow. Little known fact - Roger Tausz and I are the only musicians left still playing WestFest - who actually played at the first Westheimer Art Festival. On that sunny day, Roger, Billy Block and I played 11 sets in front of Houlihan's #2. Jim Fulton lent me a Fender Princeton amp - I didn't have one because I wasn't really a professional guitarist yet - Roger and I both played bass back then. We were the only band that thought of playing on the street at that first fest, and we were rewarded with many listeners and appreciation, as well as great weed, real quaaludes and rampant free love (this was before AIDS). This year - I'll play a set at noon with Randy Soffar, Roger Tausz and Michael Spencer - we'll even do some old Z-Rocks stuff (by special request) for Omars 30th birthday! Check the schedule at -

I also have meetings scheduled with artists (Koo Rod, Chango Man, orange is in) and volunteer mixers and editors as we hand out footage and tracks to be edited and mixed for the SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2008 film and SOUTH BY DUE EAST TELEVISION. Mixing the 82 artists who we filmed this year is a big task, and I thank Roger Tausz (Bong Island Sound), Rock Romano (Rock Romano's Red Shack Studio), John Moran (Digital Services), Mikey Farber, Lion 808 and Chris Rogers (Rogers Recording) for already picking up the tracks and working/mixing to help make things a little better for these great local artists! TO TRIBUTE OR NOT TO TRIBUTE
That was the question

I was on the Houston Bands forum this morning, when I saw an arguement break out about the need/desire for rock tribute bands. One musician posted an ad for other musicians interested in forming a KANSAS tribute band, and others chimed in with their approval or disapproval.

My opinion?

Not all musicians are songwriters, and I am totally willing to support any musician trying to play for a living, even those more willing to put their efforts into learning the repertiore of a classic rock band than putting the same time into learning and promoting the original music of their local contemporaries. If you don't write music yourself, then being the best technician on your instrument (and making a living at it) is the only goal possible.

Of course...

If more musicians were willing to put in the time to work up and promote the repertiore of great local original songwriters and composers, and promote our music scene (instead of promoting classics like KISS, Crue or Kansas), we might be a 'music capital or the world'.

I was on tour with the New Jack Hippies when a DJ in Wyoming interviewed us - asking Teri Greene, "Are you guys an all-original band?"

Teri responded, in typical Teri Greene style, "Guy and Roger play in an all-original band! The rest of us play in a band that covers Guy & Roger's material."

I understand the need to preserve the works of the classics by performing them.

The symphony does it every night.

I understand the need to get out and play - even if your bandmates write inferior material, or write nothing at all.

I understand the fantasy of BEING (sic) a rockstar by emulating your favorites and dressing up in cool period clothing, mocking steps and dance routines that were cool to everyone decades ago, and still cool to many.

I understand the fantasy of actually having people show up (and they may be actually excited) to hear you play.

I understand how it's easier for venue owners to advertise proven brand names like Kansas, Crue and KISS than it is to advertise Rozz, Million Year Dance or The New Jack Hippies, and don't blame or beg weak-assed venue owners to change their ways and take a hit while teaching their crowd some new tricks. But - I REALLY APPRECIATE THE VENUE OWNERS WHO DO!

Of course - if all tribute bands disappeared, the venue owners would likely choose mud-wrestling or karaoke instead of original music.

What a shame for us.

All that being said, let me begin closing by quoting James Goan...
"Kansas? are you serious. I can count the great tribute bands in H-town on one hand!"

On the other hand, there is lots of great original talent here, too!

LAST week at South by Southwest, the rock music conference held every year in Austin, Tex., the talk in hotel lobbies, coffeeshops and the convention center was dominated by one issue: how do musicians make a living in the age of the Internet? It’s a problem our industry has struggled with in the wake of the rising popularity of sharing mp3 music files.

Our discussions were brought into sharp relief when news reached Austin of the sale of Bebo.com to AOL for a staggering $850 million. Bebo is a social-networking site whose membership has risen to 40 million in just two years. In Britain, it ranks with MySpace and Facebook in popularity, although its users tend to come from a younger age group.

Estimates suggested that the founder, Michael Birch (along with his wife and co-founder, Xochi), walked away with $600 million for his 70 percent stake in the company.

I heard the news with a particular piquancy, as Mr. Birch has cited me as an influence in Bebo’s attitude toward artists. He got in touch two years ago after I took MySpace to task over its proprietary rights clause. I was concerned that the site was harvesting residual rights from original songs posted there by unsigned musicians. As a result of my complaints, MySpace changed its terms and conditions to state clearly that all rights to material appearing on the site remain with the originator.

A few weeks later, Mr. Birch came to see me at my home. He was hoping to expand his business by hosting music and wanted my advice on how to construct an artist-centered environment where musicians could post original songs without fear of losing control over their work. Following our talks, Mr. Birch told the press that he wanted Bebo to be a site that worked for artists and held their interests first and foremost.

In our discussions, we largely ignored the elephant in the room: the issue of whether he ought to consider paying some kind of royalties to the artists. After all, wasn’t he using their music to draw members — and advertising — to his business? Social-networking sites like Bebo argue that they have no money to distribute — their value is their membership. Well, last week Michael Birch realized the value of his membership. I’m sure he’ll be rewarding those technicians and accountants who helped him achieve this success. Perhaps he should also consider the contribution of his artists.

The musicians who posted their work on Bebo.com are no different from investors in a start-up enterprise. Their investment is the content provided for free while the site has no liquid assets. Now that the business has reaped huge benefits, surely they deserve a dividend.

What’s at stake here is more than just the morality of the market. The huge social networking sites that seek to use music as free content are as much to blame for the malaise currently affecting the industry as the music lover who downloads songs for free. Both the corporations and the kids, it seems, want the use of our music without having to pay for it.

The claim that sites such as MySpace and Bebo are doing us a favor by promoting our work is disingenuous. Radio stations also promote our work, but they pay us a royalty that recognizes our contribution to their business. Why should that not apply to the Internet, too?

Technology is advancing far too quickly for the old safeguards of intellectual property rights to keep up, and while we wait for the technical fixes to emerge, those of us who want to explore the opportunities the Internet offers need to establish a set of ground rules that give us the power to decide how our music is exploited and by whom.

We need to do this not for the established artists who already have lawyers, managers and careers, but for the fledgling songwriters and musicians posting original material onto the Web tonight. The first legal agreement that they enter into as artists will occur when they click to accept the terms and conditions of the site that will host their music. Worryingly, no one is looking out for them.

If young musicians are to have a chance of enjoying a fruitful career, then we need to establish the principle of artists’ rights throughout the Internet — and we need to do it now.

The MySpace Deal

If this had happened even one year ago, it would be considered a big deal. But at this point, with iMeem streaming music, with music available free, with major labels having less power than ever before, it merits little more than a shrug.

Now Mark Zuckerberg may have been revealed to be a barely pubescent money-hungry twerp who doesn't really care about his users, but you've got to hand it to him, Facebook's software is light years ahead of MySpace's. MySpace is barely tolerable. It loads slowly and you're assaulted with a bizarre combination of content added by site owners, users and the service itself, which heretofore has only cared about advertising. MySpace may not be a Detroit auto company, but Facebook is definitely Japanese, and Apple is a combo of BMW and Toyota, the best running and best built. And home penetration of Macs is now at 21% (http://apple20. blogs.fortune. cnn.com/2008/ 04/01/analyst- apples-us- consumer- market-share- now-21-percent/). Turns out the public does care about usability and functionality, and so far Apple has been the only company to deliver this in the music sphere. Every Mac comes with iTunes. In order to beat Apple a competitor has to deliver better software. MySpace is not that competitor. Hell, Apple beat SONY!

Furthermore, social networking sites are trendy. MySpace has peaked. Who knows where surfers will go next. All that's clear is that the major labels will show up long after the peak, with lawsuits, after an extended period of nail biting. I mean give the labels credit for getting a share of MySpace's streaming revenues, but is that really the future, low-quality streaming on the Web? When even the straight business press is talking about the iPhone becoming the new laptop? When the 3G iPhone is right around the corner? How about a deal with AT&T to stream tunes on 3G iPhones, then I'd care. But getting in bed with Rupert Murdoch as a solution to dealing with Steve Jobs is like making a deal with Irving Azoff because you can't get what you want out of Cliff Burnstein. The devious Rupert and Irving always end up winning for themselves. Can't the labels see this?

With Live Nation inking the old superstars and it almost impossible to break new acts in any profitable fashion, where does this leave the major labels? Clive can work contest winners and Jimmy can put high concept acts in Vegas, but the vast middle...they' re completely flummoxed. They don't know how to aggregate the journeymen, spread the word online, build slowly and try to make a pile of money at the end. The oldsters are just looking for a rocket ship, to take them to outer space, to deliver diamond sales. Shit, the original rocket ship even gave up on music. MTV moved on to reality programming. Can't the major labels look into the future and find a reasonable place to live?

But no, they want land grab 360 deals. Give me more not because I do more, but because I'm making less. And I'm gonna give you a smaller advance. And I can't get you on the radio...

That's the story here. How the major labels are ill-prepared for the future. Life is going to go on, people are going to make music, but are the majors going to be cut out of the profitmaking?

The major labels made music free, they refused to license Napster.

The major labels are keeping music prices artificially high. They want a buck a cut when people have iPods with thousands of free tracks. Are they living in an alternative universe?

Even if they sell DRM-less tracks at MySpace, what's the appeal? They're not going to be significantly cheaper than the songs on iTunes, the process, if not hellacious, will be buggy, and then you've got to import the tracks into your iTunes library for syncing, assuming you can figure out how to do this.

Want to beat Apple? Come up with something Cupertino hasn't delivered in a seamless first edition. Come up with insanely great instead of late to the party second-rate. Think of the customer. Think of the act! What act wants their music streamed at a low quality bit rate to the consumer? This MySpace deal isn't a solution, it's a sideshow.

All weekend at SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2008, we keep hearing about the total surprise from people that had just found out that we go through Monday night!

Tonight's schedule is probably the best actual show we have this year (and it has been a great year)! And it's free!

It begins with a kick ass local/regional rock show at 7pm (which will be over in time to get to bed at 10:00pm - if that's your thing), ends with a hiphop showcase which starts at 10:00pm, and has a 30 minute stand-up comedy show in between! So far, we've filled Dan Electro's 4 times in three days and fed and videotaped 200 musicians, but we always need a crowd for Monday's taping and late at night.

Last night's highlights included Hot jazz fusion from Miles Ahead, cool improv from The Defenestration Unit, Adrian & The Sickness rocking hard, and Dr. King Cobra's Texas Dub Crusaders funkin' all over the place!

Here's tonight's schedule, and thanks for your support all weekend! We have successfully videotaped and recorded over 50 artists, so far! The computer went down only once (from a power-out), during a really great set by Austin's Dirtyberd!

And while we're doing that, we'll make a film and shoot a whole season of live performances from great original Houston artists for our new TV show, called (you guessed it) SOUTH BY DUE EAST!

It's a great week for us. The artists are charged up for the video and play great, short sets. At most times there are at least 5 artists hanging around with the opportunity to network, visit with friends and fans, and touch their community... which is OUR community, too!

And eat some of Donna's North Carolina cooking!

The Making Of SBDECDS&DVDs

I'm listening to IRENE's set from last year's SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007, as part of the process that will result in this year's compilation CD and DVD made from last year's festival. I've finished editing all of the artists we're going to edit, and Roger is doing better mixes of the songs chosen for the compilation CD.

This year, MArlo has taken on the job of picking performances for the 2007 CD. Choosing the audio performances for the CD is a whole different process than choosing video performances for the TV episodes or film. All that is important for the audio is song, the recorded sound and the artist's performance of the song. We got good multi-track recordings of 79 (out of 82) artists last year, but we didn't get PLUMP's bass drum into the recording until the second verse of the first song, and Justin's keyboard isn't in Rozz' set at all!

Of course, we can choose to use the great digital sound from camera 3 on Rozz' set (with Justin's keys) for the video, and it will work fine for the video, but it would never cut the mustard for the compilation audio CD. We know that all of the artists feel as we do, and wish to be presented in the finest light - so the CD must contain equally good mixes and compatible frequency range from artist to artist for the listeners comfort and pleasure. That's what we'll work on when Roger and I get together this week to master the CD (probably a double CD).

IRENE's set was great. I'm now listening to JU JU EYEBALL. Star Jernigan is ripping through her guitar solo on 'Let It Shine'. Good stuff, Star!

For the video, there are other considerations.

If they are really into their visual presentation, we must determine if the band perform well (up to THEIR standards) visually?

Gary Sapone improvised some hilariously genius blues to open Saturday afternoon at 3pm last year, while the band stood still and played their asses off. Most of the visual expression was in their fingers and faces. A documentary visual style will work fine for Gary, but I felt that Million Year Dance needed to be shot with the same types of rhythms and visual composition that Tyagaraja uses to front their well thought visual presentation - or else us video guys can screw up what the band is doing.

BTW - I just went to the MYD myspace page to check the spelling of Tyagaraja (I had it right), and heard some of the new stuff they are recording for their next CD. WOW!

Then there are battery outages, cameras acting up or the occasional bad tape or computer crash. We have to invite some artists back next year for a re-shoot.

It's an exhiliarating experience for me, as I get to know the music of my friends and contemporaries in a way that can only be done by hearing these tunes over and over. I am now probably the most qualified musician in town when it comes to knowing enough of everyone's stuff to sit-in! <g>

So - we'll be finished with the new film (title suggestions?) and compilation CD by the time SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2008 begins at 7pm on Friday March 14th at Dan Electro's... we have to be!

NEXT comes SOUTH BY DUE EAST radio and television, but we have a fout day festival and movie-shoot to do before I can think any further about that!

Tonight's Hippies.TV show comes from SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007, but isn't for everyone. The episode is titled 'THE UNDERGROUND', and features some artists who don't usually get hired for the prom or the Rocket's games and such. Nonetheless, we enjoy these performances (The Krinkles, Muzak, Graustark, Friendship Bracelet, and a jam set with Don Walsh, Evad Llorac and more...) and believe that some of you will, too!

Next week's Hippies.TV will be an edited (for time) version of the film from SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2006 called 'PERFORMANCES'. The good news about this Hippies.TV edit - It's shown on cable, with much better picture and sound quality than it appears on www.southbydueeast.com or youtube. The bad news is that only 59 minutes of the original 85 will be shown. Over 40 artists - so set your DVR or tune in!

HMS-TV will be playing the full 'PERFORMANCES' film sometime this spring - late in the middle of the night.

It is so busy getting ready for BluesGuy's Birthday Jam #8 and SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2008! We've got over 75 artists scheduled (or tentatively scheduled) for SOUTH BY DUE EAST, radio support from several KPFT programmers, and have added a live webcast for both events!

This weekend, I'll appear on Smokin' Joe's Roadhouse down at the KPFT studios (KPFT - FM90.1, webcast at www.kpft.org), sometime between 3-6pm CST, playing a couple of tunes from the new CD and inviting folks to our BluesGuy's Birthday Jam #8, where we'll party hard and make a film featuring Big Al Bettis, Mandy Mercier, TC & The Cannonballs, Chris Elliot & The Bodacious Ta Ta's, and The New Jack Hippies.

As I filmed them from August thru November, jammers asked if I'd come back with the finished films, so I decided to come back to all of them - with guitar and CDs in hand, kinda like Little Joe does (except I have a car and made a schedule). It's been a great way to reconnect with old friends and make some new ones. It's also been a great time to listen to CDs from local artists during the 100-250 miles of driving each night.

I'm in the middle, writing to you.

 

It's a 'product manufacturing day', as we get ready for our local event season (birthday jam & SOUTH BY DUE EAST) and I get ready for the second leg of my  imaginary tour of JAMS & OPEN MICS in the greater Houston Area (starting Monday night at the Mucky Duck)!

Imaginary Tour of Jams & Open Mics - Leg #1

I began the tour on a Sunday, just as I had begun the film.

 

It was only to be one film at that time.

 

The plan on that first day of filming was to start at The Last Concert Cafe around 1pm, then head to Galveston County and work my way back, all the way to Ft. Bend - hitting all 8 jams & open mics in one day! By the time that day was done, jammers at 8 venues told me about another 4 Sunday jams and open mics. I knew then that this project would take some time, and it has become 5 performance-driven films for each day (SUN-THU), and one information-driven film featuring all 5 days - to become a free online reference film for jammers and open mic participants.

So,  here we are - beginning the second leg of my 'Imaginary Tour of JAMS & OPEN MICS In The Greater Metropolitan Houston Area' at The Mucky Duck on Monday night.

 

A few Sunday's ago, I began the tour at The Last Concert Cafe, just as I had begun the film. This time, the camera stayed in the case. MArlo and I ordered a 'Mama's Big Dinner' and some chili con queso to split, grabbed a table near the the circle of pickers, and listened to them trade a few songs. There were 8 guitars, a mandolin, and David O'dea's banjo. I layed some copies of the Sunday Jams DVD on the table next to a few advance copies of my new CD, grabbed my green Washburn acoustic, and joined the circle - singing a few songs, and playing along with everyone else. Nice way to spend a meal!

 

We drove the Blue Scion down 45 to Cruizer's Ice House in Sante Fe, listening to Kraazy Pete's CD, 'Blood On The Moon'. Pete has still got the edge he had in the heyday of his '60s band, Josefus. Nice work, featuring Leesa Squyres and Laurent, with guest appearances including a steel part from Adam Burchfield. Adam has been hosting the Sunday Jam at Cruizer's for a couple years with drummer/owner Mike Armstrong. Mike is one of several  venue owners who are also musicians in their house band. When I had come to film, there were a reasonable amount of people in attendance, but when we arrived, they were just ending their set to a totally packed house. This Sunday, there was a whole Adam Burchfield cheering section, decked out in Ed Hadley designer duds and other such rock-a-billy style clothing and tattoos. The guys were stylin'and the girls were really cute and hot!

 

Some guys who obviously play together as a band (they knew how to set up each other's gear) were setting up. They were good, and I asked several of them to stay up and play with me & Adam for what turned out to be a very cool set. It felt so good that I tried a new song (I'm The Luckiest Boy In The World) for the first time. Adam played his arse off!

 

Our next stop was scheduled to be Chris Elliott's jam at The Neon Moon in La Porte, but I had found out that they had scheduled a benefit instead, so we went to Galveston for a Bert Wills benefit at The Old Quarter, missing Tommie Lee Bradley, but arriving in time for a set by Hayes Carll. What a young master!

 

MArlo was tired, but let me take the long way back up Highway 146 to put up posters at some of the upcoming venues on the imaginary tour. We checked out the new CD by The Wonderful Organization. Nice, tight and funky! When we stopped at Katie's in Bacliff, I wound up playing bass on some Pink Floyd songs with guitarist James Reese. That was fun, but it was time to go home. It was a good start. It was also the last time MArlo accompanied me during the first leg of the tour. In her defense - she was starring in a play several nights a week...

 

I returned to The Old Quarter on Thursday night, after a visit to The Cock-Eyed Seagull in Clear Lake, where I did an acoustic set with Tommy Rogers. At The Old Quarter, I did a well-recieved set and found the open mic hosted by a guy named Theron Pfieffer, who gave me a live CD and made me a fan.

 

A follow-up visit to Katie's found me onstage with Jim Fulton and Ken Woodard. Those guys know how to groove! Jim owns Lone Star Guitar now. He & I were in a band called Buckshot a long time ago. We recorded at Sugar Hill with Huey Meaux. I wonder who has those tapes?  Randy Wall showed up just in time to join us the band, too! At Ronnie's Ice House, owner Buddy Manchac was not in attendance for the jam. I stayed for an hour, but it appeared that the band who played before me at Cruizer's was playing the afternoon.

 

On Monday I visited Claudio's Piano Bar in Kemah. Steve Revak got me up onstage quickly to play with the house band led by Abel Salazar. Good times! Good food! Next, off to KK's Pub in Pasadena where I ran into a couple of cool suprises! I did some of my tunes with a house band featuring bassist Danny Sparks and guitarist Randy Meadows (Bucky Meadows' kid). The guest drummer for the night was the great Terry Westbrook, who many of you knew from Gilley's and from Scott McGill's band. What a treat! And speaking of treats, in walks Randy Wall again! Not only is Randy a great keyboardist, but he's just played a couple of these new songs at Katie's the night before, and he's a quick study! The music was great, but over too soon. MArlo called and told me that The Unknown Music Show on KPFT-FM90.1 needed a fill-in guest, so it was off to Montrose to play on the radio!

 

Playing at all of these jams and open mics on the outside of town has given me a new appreciation of what KPFT has done for me and all of the local musicians who are fortunate to volunteer and play on it's community airwaves. Again and again, from Sante Fe to Conroe, people have walked up to me and told me how they have follwed my music for years on KPFT, although they had never met me or heard me perform live.

They even knew some of the songs! Thanks, KPFT!

 

At The 19th Hole in the Woodlands on Thursday night, I jammed with Dan Workman and Wes Korner. This jam rocks hard and loud. It was cool to turn my Blues DeVille up loud enough to get a great tone without effects.. Next week includes stops at Bohemio's, The Big Easy and the Spring Tavern. Hope to see you there

time to see/hear.

 

You guys get out there, too. Who have you heard? Please recommend anyone you feel would be right for SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2008.

 

You probably know what we do and what we're looking for -

 

We make films with good audio recordings and keep an archive about Houston area original music and the artists that create the music.

 

We're looking for new artists. Looking to document old artists who were important to the scene at other times in history, too! If you know someone like that - even if they don't play around anymore - let me know.

We don't repeat too many artists in consecutive years. If a band's catalogue is large - too large to properly represent in our short 20-30 minute sets, or if their continued participation brings large numbers of people to serve as crowd extras in our film, then we will have them repeatedly. Our old friends who volunteer for SOUTH BY DUE EAST related activities and work throughout the year(s) get extra consideration.

 

And ultimately it's about the original music.

 

If you were filmed last year, we probably don't want you again for a year or three - unless the band has changed shape, developed a great new repertiore, or taken a new visual stage approach (tell me about it)... or unless our gear fouled up during your recording last year (El Gato Negrito, Another Run, The Hates - only 3 of 70). You are welcome to volunteer, nevertheless - and please do recommend your new favorites.

We will take part in a benefit for one of our community's most prized resources on Saturday.

KPFT-FM90.1 is our local community Pacifica station - one of only 5 (often the best one) - and we are lucky to have it! If 'The Pacifica Foundation' means nothing to you, try googling it up.

KPFT is a source of alternative news and music which doesn't get play on corporate radio. Some of the programming is brilliant, and some of it sucks, but almost ALL of it's content is produced and performed by community volunteers - and practically unavailable elsewhere on the dial.

It's important to support this station.

Yes - I said some of it sucks. You already know that. Wanna know how to make it better? Support the station with more than your money. If you have the skills and an interesting point-of-view - volunteer to be a programmer and bring new music, talk & news to the airwaves. Not enough of the programmers bring new music, p-o-v, and topical commentary. KPFT is currently bogged down with lots of veteran programmers saying and playing the same stuff they played 20 years ago - so bring something new! Even if you don't have the skills - you can learn 'em there.

With several channels of HD coming online soon at KPFT, there will be room for lots of new programming, and room for local board members and volunteers to determine how those channels will be utilized.

I'm asking younger people with new ideas to run down to KPFT (419 Lovett Blvd.) and share your programming ideas with Ernesto, Duane, or anyone who will listen (713-526-4000). Maybe you'll soon be sharing art and ideas with Houston, too!

Don't get me wrong -

This is not about age! It's about programming! 'Veteran' programmer Larry Winters' SPARE CHANGE program always features brand new music (within a classic genre) and Larry's wry, topical commentary on subjects as diverse as the war, music, animal rescue, and everything else. There are lot's of great programs. Programmers like DJ Woo & Matt Sonzala's put fresh stuff in our ears every single time, and still find the heart and time to promote Houston artists. Have you heard that GenerAsian show? Glad to have Larry Payne back! I like it fresh and new. I like having my thoughts and opinions challenged.

Don't get me wronger -

I like the traditional music played on KPFT.

I'm just looking for more of the new!

There will be room for all of it when the HD channels kick in.

You all know I'm an archivist. The archives we've created (possibly the largest video archive of our local music scene at the turn of the century) is something I'm very proud of. I understand that it is important to present our classic heritage along with the new. Nobody else on the radio has played these classic musical style like blues, traditional country, zydeco, hip-hop (don't get mad at me - hip-hop is an OLD form already, too!), metal, rockabilly, bluegrass, reggae, celtic....

AND The Grateful Dead!

The benefit at Dan Electro's on Saturday is presented by Sandy Weinman (host of the DEAD AIR program). Sandy puts his money where his mouth is, regarding KPFT. He's a tireless volunteer at the station, serves on the local board, and he's worked hard to make this show a lot of fun and a fundraiser, so ya'll come on down. The music will be that of The Grateful Dead and other Jerry Garcia projects, and the participants will gather (and learn Dead songs) to support KPFT-FM90.1 (www.kpft.org).

Yes - I took time off of my projects to learn dead covers for KPFT....

It's that important.

Black Guild Guitar d-25 with paint worn off of neck. Bartolini magnetic pickup installed. Mid 70's vintage. Two capos on the head stock. This guitar has unmistakable worn spots on the neck and around the sound hole and is fitted with a piezo and a magnetic pickup with a stereo plug. The binding is coming loose on the top/back "valley" and there are "buckle rashes" on the back. Hard shell case.

This is a VERY UNIQUE, one of a kind (literally) guitar. It is a mid-60's Gibson J-45 that has been converted to a resonator type guitar with a National type resonator. The back and sides are rosewood, and the face is fir painted white. The guitar has a "sad face" if you look at it with the neck up. "J - 45" is etched on the plastic truss rod cover.

OK! We're back home from Nashville and ready to dig into Houston for a while! Thanks to Billy & Jill Block for opening up their home to MArlo, Mom, Chelsea and I. Thanks to Travis Bettis for the use of the guitar! It was fun hanging out with these friends, too!

There are new Hippies.TV episodes (for TV  - AND - online), and CD full of new music, a new documentary DVD about JAMS & OPEN MICS in the greater metropolitan Houston area, and some cool events coming up in December. Besides all of that - MArlo and I are looking for help in some key areas (some of the work pays - some is dependent upon volunteers). More about that later in this letter.

We had a 5am wake-up for the flight home the other day, so I just stayed up until it was time to wake up the girls. Between the all-nighter and the time at the airport, I wrote and rewrote lyrics for 3 of the new songs. So - upon arrival in Houston around 11am, I dropped MArlo at home (she only had to read the news at KPFT-FM90.1 in the afternoon and star in a play with the Company Onstage at night) and worked with Roger until all three were recorded (Download one of them - The One On The Left - for free at www.newjackhippies.com/theoneontheleft.mp3).  Not a bad day of music and media in two cities. I like that kind of stuff!

I'll begin my 'Tour of JAMS & OPEN MICS In The Greater Metropolitan Houston Area' on Sunday, with appearances at The Last Concert Cafe around 1pm, at Cruizer's Ice House in Sante Fe around 4pm, and at The Neon Moon in La Porte around 8:30pm. I'm visiting local jams and open mics for the next couple of months to play some music with the jammers and autograph copies of our new DVD called (you guessed it) 'GUY SCHWARTZ' Guide To JAMS & OPEN MICS In The Greater Metropolitan Houston Area!', as well as debut our new CD titled 'Chameleon v3.5'

I shot video at these jams, made films (including a community-served web-based reference film aimed at driving visitors to our jams and open mics), and will now go back to these jams to sit-in and play, as well as introduce and sell the DVD with those films as well as my new CD. As Adam Burchfield said, "That's a really cool, grass-roots kind of musical project."

MArlo & I are considering a few dates for a couple of meetings with our participating volunteers. The purpose would be to discuss new ideas for this year's live show and film. Let me know if you are interested in attending, and which days/times of the week would fit for you.

I'll be playing at a special 'JERRY CHRISTMAS' show at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar for Sandy Weinman and his DEAD AIR Show on KPFT. It'll be four bands playing Jerry Garcia songs! We don't know a whole hour of Dead stuff, and even though Sandy said doing our own songs would be OK, I'm looking for a couple of guest New jack hippies to sing and play a couple more Jerry/Dead songs. Hit me up if you fit the bill!

I'll also be part of The BluesHound & Baby Girl's Xmas Howl, featuring a bunch of cool local musicians doing improvised jams of holiday songs on the radio from 2-4pm on the 23rd! Holiday songs only - and I've got one on my new CD! Pretty cool, huh?

We need lots of help. Some of it pays - much of it doesn't.

We need help with our office stuff. Filing, labeling, etc.
We need help with some sheetrock repair and finishing
We need help obtaining grant money for some of our film projects
We need help turning the house into a home (it's an office/warehouse now)
We need help booking the band, promoting online,
     and selling space & product placement in a couple films.
We need a good screenplay we can shoot inexpensively.

CD Baby has added the ability to sell our CDs in downloadable form right from our CD Baby pages. The cool thing about this is that we can set our own price, something I can't do at I-Tunes, Best Buy, or Wal-Mart.
