***************Rock Star Bono Tunes Up for His New Role as VC
----2004-07-21 02:36:25
Extending his embrace of all things business, U2 frontman Bono has
said "me too" to VC, joining this year's most talked-about new buyout
firm, Elevation Partners, as a managing director.
Roger McNamee (who co-founded both Silver Lake Partners and Integral
Capital Partners and counts Electronic Arts, Sybase and Gartner among
his investments) started the investment supergroup with former EA No.
2 John Riccitiello in April after Riccitiello left EA. Other partners
include former Apple CFO Fred Anderson, Silver Lake's Mark Bodnick and
Bret Pearlman of the Blackstone Group.
So, how will Bono give Elevation a lift?

***U2
album: 4 formats ----2004-07-20 11:42:55
WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRIBUTION
July 19, 2004
posted by: m2
A contact in Poland tells @U2 that the local Universal Music office
there lists not one, not two, not three ... but four formats for U2's
new album:
* CD
* limited edition CD/DVD
* vinyl
* limited edition box
Universal Poland did not, however, confirm the November 22nd release
date. That news has only been confirmed so far by Universal offices in
France, New Zealand, and The Netherlands. (Thanks Z.)

***Interview
with Dallas Schoo ----2004-07-18 22:26:58
Interview with Dallas Schoo (he is The Edge´s guitar tech)
Dublin, Ireland
Hanover Quay Studios
By Mike Sturgess
...
Dallas - I am in with U2 some 12-14 hrs everyday….about 18 months now
with off and on breaks when Bono had to fly off to support his
"African Aids Awareness" campaign/talks and then the big break where
The Edge, myself, and Bono went to Capetown for the "Nelson Mandella
and Aids Awareness" event. Great show, great spirit at that one. Felt
very close and like I was traveling around with "my mates" at that
particular one off I guess you would say on that long flight from
Ireland to South Africa and back and then at the actual concert to two
of the most wonderful people that God has ever sent to come through my
"journey"…..Bono & Edge. I mean this.
As I say, have done nothing but totally focused on this new U2 record
for a year plus now. Just really get up every day…..take the trains to
my swimming workout….back on the train to Downtown Dublin and then the
45 minute walk into our U2 HQ studios. Edge always arrives in first…of
course.
But…If I may?.....as I see it, this could be one of the GREATEST
collection of songs for a new U2 Cd/DVD ever made! The Edge has played
some of his most innovative guitar moments and recording tracks that I
have witnessed. Bono's singing has been simply the most brilliant
performances with his voice being in top form on this record. His
guitar playing on this project is as well to be reckoned with and
often provides the canvas for The Edge to follow with even more guitar
ideas………..Adam's very very fresh big time bass grooves and tremendous
comments and direction with the record….Larry drums on this recording
like he is 17 years old...really full on……When you hear this record, I
can see NO WAY that you will disagree with my take on this new work of
art by this still to be reckoned with world important necessary and
still very much "current" band.
I think both the state of the music industry and the present day world
events will welcome the music and the message of this Fantastic new U2
music. I know I'm biased….so maybe I'm just biased…maybe not.
And…..maybe we will actually be finally OUT of the studio and ON THE
BLEEDIN STAGE again soon!!!! That would be well different…right?

***************U2 to Release Atomic Bomb ----2004-07-18 16:25:16
Sunday Independent
18th July, 2004
U2 to Release Atomic Bomb It's official. U2 are finished. Let me
rephrase that: U2 have finished their new album. Bono celebrated the
completion of the long-awaited follow-up to All That You Can't Leave
Behind with a slap-up meal in the Clarence last Friday.
Good Friday it was: everybody who had worked on the album was invited
as a thank you from the lads. On the Saturday morning, Bono et al
jetted out to the South of France for holiday and to shoot a video and
do some promo for the new record - rumoured to be called "How to
Defuse an Atomic Bomb." On Wednesday in Nice, U2 were like the
aforesaid atomic bomb going off when the rough tapes of the album were
stolen. Who are you gonna call? Bono could have called his old mate,
former president Bill Clinton. But as Shane MacGowan found out, he was
indisposed.
Shane had to step into the breach last Monday on BBC Radio 4's
prestigious "Today" programme when Bill, so to speak, pulled out.

***************BONO TO GET CIVIL RIGHTS FREEDOM AWARD ----2004-07-16
16:58:17
The National Civil Rights Museum will honor Bono this Fall with its
Freedom Award at a ceremony in Memphis. Bono will get the group's
international award, while Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) receives the
national award. The museum, which is located on the site of Martin
Luther King Jr.'s murder, gives the Freedom Awards annually to those
who have worked to advance civil rights. This year's awards ceremony
is scheduled for October 18th.

***************Did U2 Plan to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb? ----2004-07-13
19:05:17
Another set of domain registrations means more speculation about the
name of the next U2 album
@U2 , July 12, 2004
by Matt McGee
Domain name registrations are once again offering a possible clue
about the name of U2's next studio album.
Following up on our recent report about three domains --
U2vertigo.com, .net, and .org -- that were registered by James Cooke
of Dublin web firm Digital:CC, @U2 has discovered three additional
domains that were registered back in February by the same James Cooke:
howtodismantleanatomicbomb.com
howtodismantleanatomicbomb.net
howtodismantleanatomicbomb.org
Only the .org domain specifically lists Cooke's name; the others have
fake address information (Times Square, NY, 00000), but use the same
dvibe.com domain in the contact information and are sourced from
Joker.com, the same registration source on the U2vertigo domains.
This discovery fits in nicely with a recent report on U2log.com that
British artist Damian Hirst offered "Vertigo" and "How to Deconstruct
an Atomic Bomb" as possible song titles after hearing some of U2's new
material.
Adding further intrigue is word from an @U2 reader that Christian
singer Michael W. Smith told a concert crowd last month about a recent
conversation he had with Bono, during which Bono shared a possible
album title: How to Dismantle the Atomic Bomb. As Smith tells the
story, Bono asked if he (Smith) knew how to dismantle an atomic bomb.
Smith said "no", and Bono answered his own question: "Love. With
love." Bono and Smith are friends who recently appeared together for
the launch of The One Campaign in Philadelphia.
It may also be worth nothing that the three "atomic bomb" domains were
registered on February 6th of this year, just days before Billboard
reported that Steve Lillywhite had been asked to take over album
production duties. The three "U2vertigo" domains were registered June
22nd, as U2 was in the final two weeks of recording. It's easy to
speculate that "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" was one of the early
names being considered, and that "Vertigo" may have replaced it as the
recording sessions came to an end. But until the album name is
announced, that remains nothing more than speculation.
