*********U2 keen to headline Phoenix Park gig
By Alison O'Connor
newsdesk@...
27 August 2003
THE Republic's government has been asked if U2 can headline a major gig at
Dublin's Phoenix Park next summer.
Following the success of the Robbie Williams concert earlier this month,
an approach was made to the Department of the Environment - Minister
Martin Cullen makes the decisions on what concerts will be held in the
park.
Last night concert promoters MCD Productions poured cold water on the
idea, saying U2 were not being considered for the line-up.
However, the band's name had been mentioned in initial discussions.
The Phoenix Park is only offered for three events major music events each
year, and two of those must be free to the public. It is too soon to say
whether the negotiations will prove successful, but it is understood that
Mr Cullen was pleased with the success of Robbie Williams' concert and
would be keen for U2 to play.
The Robbie Williams concert, the largest ever open-air rock concert to be
held in Ireland, was generally acknowledged to have been a huge success,
with the British pop star playing to a sell-out crowd of 135,000.
The gig was the biggest event in the Phoenix Park since the Pope came in
1979, and it is understood U2 are keen to play to such a big crowd in the
centre of Dublin. U2 last played a major gig in Ireland at Slane in the
summer of 2001.
*********Has Bono lost his bottle?
The Mirror - 26 August 2003
BONO proved he's a No1 dad when his youngest son needed some Elevation
during a family stroll.
The rocker ended up holding the baby when two-year-old John Abraham found
the going tough and needed a drink of water during their walkabout in St
Tropez on Sunday.
Bono, 43, wearing a straw hat and his trademark glasses was followed close
behind by wife Ali and their four-year-old son Elijah.
Despite being one of the biggest rock stars in the world, there wasn't a
bodyguard in sight as Bono strolled around shops at the harbour virtually
unnoticed. An onlooker said: "He was completely relaxed and he is such a
familiar face around St Tropez that hardly anyone bothers him in the
street.
"They were having a relaxing walk and enjoying themselves."
The singer is recording a new album with U2 but took time out for a
romantic break with Ali to celebrate their 21st anniversary.
Bono owns a R5million seafront villa in the resort where he spends three
months every year.
*********Wolf Set To Pounce
source: u2.com - 26 August 2003
Bono's illustrations, audio clips and an introduction by Gavin Friday
highlight a dedicated website to launch the new version of Prokofiev's
Peter and the Wolf. ( http://www.peterwolf.org/)
In 1936 Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by the Central Children's
Theatre in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children. Prokofiev
completed Peter & The Wolf in four days but its debut attracted little
notice and no-one guessed that it would become a classic of the century.
Now comes a new take on Prokoviev's story, produced by Gavin Friday and
the Friday-Seezer Ensemble and illustrated by Bono. Adapting the theme to
use instruments like accordion, banjo and mandolin, Gavin and Maurice have
produced a clever and humorous interpretation of the original.
And, designed to raise funds for the Irish Hospice Association, the story
now comes as an enhanced CD with a 64-page cloth-bound book illustrated by
Bono, with help from his daughters Jordan and Eve.
'Peter and the Wolf is a lesson in how to teach.' explains Bono, talking
of the project. 'This is a new version of the Prokofiev classic by two of
my favourite people and musicians, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer. It is
for Hospice Care . . .these angels who were so ready to look after my
father in his losing fight with cancer asked me to illustrate the book
that accompanies the music. Ciaran O'Goara was art director and guide. I
asked my girls Jordan and Eve to help me with detail and a filigree of
flowers. I painted myself in a corner as PETER. My Da we made the
grandfather, as he was to Jordan and Eve, my two daughters who loved and
were loved by him. THE WOLF was ambition for things just out of reach.
Auction house Christie's will also be auctioning Bono's original
illustrations, and have produced a lavish catalogue. The illustrations
will be exhibited this Autumn in Dublin, London, New York and Los Angeles.
All the information you need is here including how to buy the boxed set or
the Christie's catalogue, all of which raises funds for the Irish Hospice
Foundation.(http://www.hospice-foundation.ie/)
*********MTV Europe's Burma Campaign
BBC - 27 August 2003
MTV Europe are launching a new campaign urging the release of Burmese
human rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi.
The campaign - which has been supported by Coldplay's Chris Martin, Bono,
Macy Gray and Sir Bob Geldof - will feature promos across all the European
MTV and VH1 channels from Wednesday.
The promos urge TV viewers to visit websites where they can petition U.N.
Secretary General Kofi Annan to refer her arrest to the Security Council.
"We have to take a stand against this gross violation of human rights,"
said Chris Martin. "The world's leaders aren't doing enough to rectify the
situation in Burma and this campaign can provide a global call for Aung
San Suu Kyi's release."
