Kate's songs reflect a lasting influence of growing up in
Mississippi during the civil rights movement of the '60s.
The simplicity, sincerity and sophistication of her writing
paint sharply detailed portraits of life in the South,
drawing comparisons to Endora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, and
William Faulkner. She gives voice to the pursuit of art and
devotion, family and spirituality, social disparity and
childhood memories with insight and compassion, often framed
in down-home humor. Kate's musical styles, which she
performs on guitar and piano, draw from Southern roots, folk
and gospel, swamp-rock, and soul and blues.
