It is with great delight that I share this news with you. The newest CD of the great Wonder Morton theatre pipe organ in Santa Barbara's Arlington Theatre has just been released! Not only is this new CD, just recorded on 1-2 October, a true testament to Robert Morton's exquisite and highly orchestral instruments but it also fulfills a long-time dream of mine being my first Christmas recording.
The instrument was originally installed in Loew's Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, NJ and was donated to Santa Barbara via the North Texas ATOS chapter. Anyone who has heard it knows what a true powerhouse instrument it is in a very snappy and responsive yet resonant acoustic, and its sound has been masterfully and artistically captured by Paul Ebert of True-Stereo Location Recording, Ventura, CA. The incredible artwork and visual concept was done by my friend and SBTOS president Bruce Murdock right down to the bit, ornate Morton console being silkscreened in full color on the disc itself! The packaging also includes a beautiful shot of the auditorium before the symphony sound baffles were hung in front of the proscenium with the console on its lift in concert position (something we accidentally left out of the 1996 CD!)

hi,
People would be well advised to seriously consider not joining
anything or following any grouply links. On
the yahoo groups I manage (freecycle groups) I have opted them
out of any grouply functionality due to huge risks and spam.
Grouply apparently asks members for userid and password in some
situations which is a huge violation of any kind of safe internet
computing standard out there.
Here's some info...
Run, Dont Walk, from Grouply.com
I just got an email telling me that jonpeters, a member of my
Yahoo Group, wants me to join something called Grouply. This
group is usually pretty conservative, so when I saw the name
jonpeters I knew there was some sort of spammer at work. But
what was that Grouply thing?
Grouply Wants Your Yahoo Password-and MUCH MORE
Grouply.com is a service that presents itself as an aggregation
tool for your Yahoo and Google groups. This is supposed to make
it easier to for the user to collect all the blogs and chats they
want to read in one place. However, Grouply will solicit your
Yahoo password and user name. This should be the first signal
that something is wrong. Yahoo and Google will never send you an
email asking you for your username or password. You must contact
them with this info, not the reverse. Any one who emails you a
request for your username and password almost certainly a
spammer/hacker/identity thief. This is so important that Im
repeating it:
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, GIVE OUT YOUR YAHOO OR GOOGLE USERNAME OR
PASSWORD IN RESPONSE TO A SOLICITATION OR EMAIL. YAHOO AND GOOGLE
WILL NEVER EMAIL YOU A REQUEST FOR THIS INFO. ANYONE WHO ASKS FOR
THIS INFORMATION MUST BE TREATED WITH SUSPICION OF IDENTITY
THEFT!!
Your Grouply Account Will Invade Everyone Elses Privacy!
Grouply uses your Yahoo username and password like most viruses,
gathering all the entries in your address book and solicits them.
Once they take this info, they solicit your friends. However,
these guys go one better than Facebook or MySpace: They go into
your Yahoo and Google groups and copy EVERYTHING! No matter if
its a private group. Those entries you made about your lousy
boss, problem girlfriend, or how to change your bad credit
rating? No reason to keep those issues a secret anymore. Grouply
will know all about it - then they (seem to) phish your friends,
making sure theyre private group conversations are made public.
Congratulations! Youve now destroyed half your friendships and
peeved all your relatives!!
Opt Out!! But I Never Opted In!
At the end of the email soliciting your membership in Groupys
phishing expedition, youll offered the oportunity to opt-out.
Right.
Click on the unsubscribe link, and youll wait for several
minutes, then be taken to a website that requires you give them
your email address!! THEN youre expected to wait several hours
for an email to be sent to your account with a separate opt-out
link.
This my friends, is bull cookies.
These days, even the worst spammer has one-click opt-out.
Grouply doesnt seem to hide the fact that they make opting out
an unnessesarily uncomplicated proceedure. This makes sense when
you consider that Grouply cant turn a profit unless it can mine
your info.
TAKE ACTION!
The way to get rid of Grouply is the same as getting rid of a
virus. If you get an mail from a friend who wants you to join
Grouply, simply transfer that friends contact into to Notepad
and send your friend an email pointing to this blog posting. Tell
them that you can put their contact info back into your addresses
when they fix their Grouply problem. Then DELETE THEIR ADDRESS
FROM GOOGLE OR YAHOO. Yes, thats right DELETE IT.
Its worse if the Grouply email mentions a Google or Yahoo group.
Send a note to the moderator of your group. Tell them that they
are being data mined and that they are putting the entire
membership at risk until the Grouply infected member is
deleted. Then UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE GROUP. As long as you stay
with the Yahoo or Google group, your membership details and
anything private you write on your groups will become public
knowledge.
And
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE OUT THAT USERNAME AND PASSWORD IN
RESPONSE TO AN EMAIL!!

Last weekend was the big 20th Anniversary concert of the installation of the Robert Morton "Wonder" Organ in the Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara, CA. With over 1500 in attendance the concert was a huge success and quite exciting. But there's more...
I was there all week working not only towards the concert and silent films, but also completing several days' worth of work (often with all night recording sessions) culminating with the mastering of a new Christmas CD on the big 4/27 Arlington organ! The recording engineer came into the theatre on Sunday night after the crowds had left from the concert, the room cooled down a bit and outside noise has ceased.

I read with great interest Walt Strony's post of earlier today and wanted to add my own thoughts and sentiments as well. Since before the flood I have been in regular contact with Darren Ferreter, my friend and long-time president of the Cedar Rapids Area Theatre Organ Society (CRATOS) and write you at his request today on the behalf of his chapter, CRATOS, and the cause of these two great and historic pipe organs.
The news has been rather vivid and, honestly, depressing in what has happened not only to the Paramount and Iowa organs but also to the city of Cedar Rapids and its residents. The CRATOS website also has some very detailed photos and commentary on the state of both instruments and their homes. The chapter's website can be reached at: www.cr-atos.com. Click on "Gallery" in the right hand column, bottom link.
At the Iowa Theatre, now Theatre Cedar Rapids, the Wangerin-Barton console had been raised to full height before the flood waters hit. Though not totally damaged, it did get waterlogged to quite an extent and the water level was up to the Solo manual. Thankfully the relay, blower and chambers escaped damage or moisture. Given the very unique and one-of-a-kind organ this is, this is indeed good news!!
Sadly the post-flood state of the Paramount Theatre is not as positive as that of the Iowa. The console is a complete loss save for the manuals, stoprail and various panels and parts of the outer console shell. This is very sad since this was one of the rare consoles that was actually decorated at the WurliTzer factory prior to its shipping. It's unique and rich ivory color and gold ormalu were applied in North Tonawanda- so that IS what one looked like "back in the day." Its blower, however, is in the basement and was submerged as was the lift motor.
Now apparently both lift motors can be rebuilt as can, quite possibly, the WurliTzer's blower. But the two consoles, unfortunately, are another story all together.
I do not know what will happen with the Iowa console rebuilding and/or the Paramount console replacement, but I can only hope and pray that things are done as expediently as possible given the scope of the damage and what has happened. My friends in organ land, these projects will require tremendous funding to get these instruments up and playing again as they previously did which, I might add, were in tip-top, concert-ready shape at all times.
Prayers, good wishes and positive thoughts are definitely needed at this time towards CRATOS and the instruments they care for, but in addition, donations are also critically needed to help get the ball rolling on the console repairs and replacement. Only time will tell when the buildings themselves will be cleaned and repaired as needed so that audiences can once again flock to them and enjoy music and live entertainment. In fact, the Paramount building is supposedly in worse shape than meets the eye structurally as the result of the water and pressure from the mud and tons of toxic sludge that poured into its auditorium, basement and sub-basement. Needless to say this includes air and heating ducts, electrical conduits and every other nook and cranny that could possibly be found by pouring water and mud. To be honest - God only knows what will actually be found within, but it sure doesn't hurt to keep a positive attitude and hope for the absolute very best.
I do not yet know the status of insurance coverage for the Paramount and its organ, but from what Darren told me there is NO insurance coverage on the Iowa's Barton. This alone sends a shock of goosebumps up my spine thinking of what that could mean in the long run. I would have thought both theatres and organs were fully covered but apparently that is not the case, sadly.
The Barton is privately owned by Cedar Rapids Barton, Incorporated (CRBI). Darren has requested me to ask that donations please be sent to:
Folks, let's definitely not forget the good people of Cedar Rapids and CRATOS, many of whom are my friends and colleagues. Let us definitely not forget those two grand ladies of song the Barton and the WurliTzer. They need to sing out again, they need to be restored to their former glory and, in that process- they NEED TO BE SAVED AND RESCUED for present and future generations!
Please send any and all donations you are able to give to the following:

For the Wurlitzer specifically or general support of the chapter and its work:

Having played both of these wonderful organs countless times and (thankfully) having recorded one of them a few years ago, these instruments and their caregivers have a very special place in my heart - just as Walt expressed himself earlier today in his email. I know that many other fine artists also share this sentiment as I have spoken with them since this all happened.
When the flooding hit, I got out the DVD from last September when I was honored to have been invited to perform the annual CR School Program at the Paramount and the St. Saens Organ Symphony No. 3 with the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra, and I must admit that I did become quite teary watching that ivory and gold console rise slowly out of the pit as those crashing chords blended with the orchestra playing at full force - and what an INCREDIBLY FINE symphony orchestra they truly are under Maestro Tim Hankewich's baton! (The only other performance I have ever heard of the St. Saens that had the conducted grandeur and perfection of Maestro Hankewich's interpretation was the historic recording of the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Charles Munch).
Folks, these organs need and deserve to live again. Thank you for reading and for your support of CRATOS, it's Barton and it's Mighty WurliTzer who are now waiting for their chance to sing out once again.
Sincerely and musically yours, -Scott

The survey deals basically with local chapters. Over here there are no
local chapters so filling out the survey is quite meaningless.
Incidentally, my copy arrived already May 15. After all, the magazine
had to travel over the big water and find its way to the remote little
country where I live. VIP treatment I guess.

To Interested Parties,
I had lunch with ATOS President Ken Double today and we discussed the
lateness of the May/June issue of The Theatre Organ. I had received
mine about an hour before lunch. Ken contacted a ATOS board member and
came up with the following announcement:
"Due to the late arrival of THEATRE ORGAN, the official Journal of ATOS,
we are extending two important deadline dates. First, the deadline for
early registration for the ATOS Convention in Indianapolis is now
extended until June 1, 2008. One can still receive the cheaper
registration fee up until June 1, 2008. The hotel deadline remains the
same, but the registration deadline for savings is now June 1.
Second, we are also extending the deadline date for returning the ATOS
Survey which is included in The Journal. The international deadline
date of June 10, 2008 is now the deadline date for the postmark for
returning all of the surveys. We urge our membership to complete the
surveys and mail them immediately."
I told Ken that I would post the message on Theatreorgans-l.

123 3rd Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401. (319) 362-1729
But the Saint-Saens is by no means the only offering that evening...the information sent to me from the CRSO is as follows and gives a better description of the events yet to come:
"Insight"
Saturday, 22 September 2007. 7:00-7:35 PM., Paramount Theatre.
This is a play and talk presented to the audience members who come early to the performance, and the Mighty Wurlitzer will be played and fully demonstrated with Scott Foppiano at the organ and Timothy Hankewich as the host and emcee.
"Concert"
Saturday, 22 September 2007. 8:00 PM., Paramount Theatre.
Repertoire: Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3, Opus 78 in c minor, "The Organ Symphony."
"Post Concert"
Audience play-out with Scott Foppiano at the Mighty Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ.
For further information or to purchase tickets, please see the Symphony's website:
Yes, the Peng Peng Piano Concert "A Night on the Town" has been replaced with the St. Saens and Wurlitzer performance but this is not yet reflected on the website. This is indeed an exciting and historic event which will hopefully be the first of many CRSO and Wurlitzer performances!
It would be fantastic to see some of you there for this concert. Please try to make it if you can!
Thanks for reading.

Yes, Russell played a really good selection and he managed to play three of my favorites, without me requesting them!!! I have the entire show on video which has been quite a pleasure to edit.
(Folks - please don't ask for a copy of the DVD. I have an agreement with all of "my" artistes, not to copy or play recordings, except if they ask for a copy for themselves. NO exceptions).
Unlike some wannabees, Russell does have an individual style and his "breaks" and "bridges" are instantly recognisable. Shame we've lost him to the cruise liners for a couple of years, but as they say "Absence makes the heart grow fonder". He speaks well of you Dan. (pssst - Russell, that's $5 you owe me - ROTFL).
OK Dan, I'll bite. When are you next in the UK? I don't do any bookings personally, but I do have some influence over "specials", so we could have a deal. :-)
I'm sure that Russell played a lovely program for you folks. He tends to do that! :):) Maybe if we agree at least once more in this century you might consider letting me play for you on my next trek to the U.K. ! LOL :):)
It must be the eternal quest for "power" in some.

As you may recall, Michael Fellenzer was elected to the ATOS Board
last year. Within hours of taking office he resigned. One can
reasonably draw the inference that he did so to allow the Board to
appoint another Director while he retained his vote by being appointed
Vice-President. Mr. Fellenzer is now again a candidate for election to
the ATOS Board.
I am sure that many of you find this as offensive to the principles of
an elected and representative Board of Directors as I do. While I am
certainly not going to vote for Mr. Fellenzer, I don't think that
sends a sufficiently strong message about my disapproval of his action
in placing himself on the ballot. Therefore I am going make him a
"write-out" candidate on my ballot by lining out his name. I encourage
those of you share my distaste for Mr. Fellenzer's behavior to
likewise line out his name on your ballot.
If you have already mailed your ballot, perhaps you will want to send
your write-out vote separately to:
