BRATTLEBORO, VT, March 22 - Great news! There's lots to do. The bad
news is that there is practically no time left to do it in. I have to
be out of here in less than 45 minutes.
This issue, we have items about acts whose names, I believe, have
never appeared in these virtual pages. Slip Kid - a celebration of
The Who - and Late Night Radio are two that come quickly to mind.
We also have plenty from our old standbys, who have done a tremendous
amount to make this newsletter possible to date.
So I think this will turn out to be a good newsletter issue, even
though the last part of pulling it together was done in haste. A lot
of life is taken a little too fast. This is but one example.

HERE IS THE LATEST NEWS from Mission of Burma. Our earlier special
mailing of this information contained a direct Web address that was
broken and in wicked, un-Burma-like disrepair. The following includes
the correct address. - Ed.
Hello friends,
We are pleased to announce that Matador [Records] is re-releasing the
first three Mission of Burma records: "vs." "Signals, Calls, and
Marches," and "The Horrible Truth About Burma" on March 18 (CD and vinyl).
http://www.matadorrecords.com/mission_of_burma/
There 's a ridiculous amount of extras included - most notably, dvd
footage of ancient concerts and a bunch of bonus tracks. The new
masters were exquisitely overseen by Rick Harte [of Ace of Hearts
Records], Mission of Burma's original producer.
Check out this Electronic Press Kit from Matador. [the quick time
movie takes a while to load, but you'll be amply rewarded]

Some live shows with Shellac in Europe in May/June including the
Primavera Festival, Barcelona May 30
Some US dates to follow, including The Pitchfork Festival in Chicago,
July 12, where we'll be performing "vs." in its entirety.

SLAID CLEAVES
Recording New Songs
and Hitting the Road With Them
"This week Slaid Cleaves will be hitting the road for his first US
shows since November.
"But the bigger news is that, after some serious woodshedding, Slaid
has gathered a batch of brand new songs and begun recording his next
CD with esteemed producer Gurf Morlix in Austin. Release date is yet
to be set, but you can get a sneak peek of the new songs at shows in
Texas and the Southwest in the next few weeks, with much more touring
to follow."

BANJO DAN AND THE MID-NITE PLOWBOYS
Hit a Little Too Close to Home
The Vermont trad-bluegrass band, Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys,
has a string of shows around the Green Mountain State this spring. As
5-string Dan himself said, these Plowboys "are not about to wait for
summer to crank up the bluegrass machine."
Come summer, these folks are venturing farther afield. Too far
afield, if you ask me. I won't go into this any more than absolutely
necessary, but one of their engagements is four or five small-town
blocks from the high school where I graduated. Yikes! The high
school building is long, long gone, but the dark memories remain.
In addition to this mighty strange Maine engagement, the Mid-Nite
Plowboys are hitting spots in New Hampshire, New York, Old
Connecticut, and the Province of Quebec.

WEB CLUTTER
We received an inquiry this week for a URL for the 35th Parallel
website. Here, incidentally, is the address as given by the band in a
recent mailing:
35th Parallel
http://www.35thparallel.com
This is a fine Vermont/New Hampshire duo, and it is no surprise that
we would receive an inquiry. What was surprising is that the person
making the inquiry had made an effort to find the 35th Parallel
address himself by way of general Web searches. I don't know for a
fact that he used Google, but it seems like a reasonably safe guess.
Google's indexing of the Web has its ups and downs, so normally I
might consider these inconsistencies to be explanation enough. But as
it turns out, in the past week or so, I had a similar experience
looking for official websites of the groups Consonant and the Swinging
Steaks. Yahoo is far superior, as a rule, for this sort of search;
and though I used Yahoo, I still had trouble. Consonant is no big
surprise since the band's name is a single word that has several broad
usages having nothing to do with this outfit. But The Swinging
Steaks? To me, the issue here is Web clutter: lots and lots of it.
Even the best Web-search devices, at least some of the time, are
having trouble cutting through all this world wide debris.
The vast majority of my Web searches are successful, and I imagine
most of you have similar good fortune. So this item is much more
about commiseration over exceptions than about seeking an everyday
solution. But it seems to me that it is a solid idea when a Yahoo or
Google search does not work out to your satisfaction to try the other
engine. If neither works, try again in a couple weeks.
One of my most important recent Web searches, having to do with the
original Swiss Bell Ringers band was unsuccessful with Yahoo, Google,
and even Metacrawler. I found what I was looking for - a HIGHLY
obscure Australian Web page - by trying one of the big search engines
that predated Google, AllTheWeb.

SLIP KID
A Cherone-ization of The Who
(They don't want to cause a big sensation.)
"SLIP KID: A Tribute To The Who
Featuring Gary Cherone of Extreme and Van Halen!
[At the Regent Theatre,
Arlington, Massachusetts]
"Friday, April 25 at 8pm
Reserved Seats: Gold Circle, First 10 Rows, $27.50; Reserved
Orchestra, $17.50; Reserved Balcony, $15.00
"SLIP KID, is not just another WHO tribute/cover band, nor does it try
to impersonate them. Rather It is a truly inspired celebration of the
music and live performance of THE WHO, that captures the raw emotional
energy of the band. And WHO better to do it?
"The brain child of the brothers Cherone, with Markus on guitar and
Gary singing lead, SLIP KID was born from a common bond that has
influenced them from the very beginning and continues to inspire today.
"The band consists of veterans of the Boston music scene with Gary's
former bandmate, singer, songwriter Paul Mangone on bass, and the
manic antics of Moon handled by Dana Spellman on drums. Rounding out
the sound on keyboards and programming Jeff Calder.
"Whether you're a casual or hard-core fan, you will hear everything
from the early eclectic pop to the familiar anthems of a
g-g-g-generation, with a few odds and sods in-between.
"SLIP KID meet the new boss."

http://www.myspace.com/slipkidband/
http://www.cherone.com/
I'm not sure why my information-source citation is missing here, but
it is FAR too late to fix this problem. I will just say from memory
that this item came from a recent mailing sent by staff at The Regent
Theatre, Arlington, Massachusetts.

LOSING E-MAILS AND FAILING TO ANSWER MESSAGES are not among our
goals. But a few e-mails are getting lost in the proverbial shuffle
and some messages are going unanswered. This is a non-paying gig, and
there are limits to the amount of time available for it. Yet
recently, there has been a greatly increased demand for our services.
The main reason may be that Google has lately indexed the
newsletter's Yahoo Groups home page. Attention from Google has a
tendency to increase traffic and sometimes dramatically. Meanwhile,
this is more nearly a one-person operation than not, so expanding our
hours isn't an option. If you have sent a message that you think is
important but have heard nothing back, you may want to give it a
second try.

ROCK BAND
The Latest
We received the following, which is billed as a
- Major Rock Band Update.
I won't get a chance to follow the link and check things out 'til
after sending this newsletter issue. But we get e-mails about the
Rock Band and Guitar Hero games, so I do believe this is going to be
of interest to many of our readers. Here is what our correspondent said:

The integration of store and preview features is a nice touch, though
the most desired feature, online band world tour, is still not
available. Still, this goes to show Harmonix is on the ball.

THE WEISSTRONAUTS
New Album Due Early Spring
(If We Can Determine When
Early Spring Arrives This Year)
Another great item from yhe latest Pete Weiss newsletter.
It says here these Weisstrocats are working hard to slip away from the
"Surf" label. It's too bad they have to. The trouble with calling
The Weisstronauts a surf-rock band is that it is too simple. Reality
is normally more complex. The Weisstronauts' rock 'n' roll features
strong currents of psychedelic rock, mainstream pop, country twang,
and more. This is a diverse group, and it is easily one of my
favorite bands out of New England.
"The WEISSTRONAUTS:
"A skeletal lineup of the Weisstronauts did a nifty cover of a MISS
MARY song for Stereoriffic Recording's 10th anniversary compilation.
Jeff Norcross played drums AND guitar, Kenny Lafler played tack piano,
while I played bass and some guitar. Also... our slightly delayed new
album is done and, pending artwork completion, will be out in early
spring. We have tried our darndest to shake the 'surf' label! Stay
tuned and judge for yourself... Recommended if you like Southern
Culture On The Skids, early Moog exploitation albums, Chet Atkins, Red
Sovine, the Velvet Underground."

Yahoo News headline, wee hours, Sunday morning, March 16, 2008:
More bands embrace the option of giving away music
I had actually hoped to discuss this topic, but now a lack of time is
staring me in the face. I will simply say that I was involved in an
exchange of e-mails on just this topic, then the Yahoo News headline
ran, then we received an inquiry for addressing information for 35th
Parallel, and then we received a very favorable comment on that
group's "Download of the Month." So, this subject seems timely.

HOLLY HARRIS
News Update From The Mystix
"And some big news for you Blues lovers out there:
"HOLLY HARRIS RE-SURFACES ON THE INTERNET!
"Holly Harris Joins Forces With Realization Pictures to Launch The
Ultimate Blues Internet Radio Show
"Holly Harris, best known for her long-running radio show, 'Blues on
Sunday' with Holly Harrison on WBOS, has branched out to establish her
own Internet radio show, 'Ultimate Blues With Holly Harris,' now
available via UltimateBlues.com, streaming over the Internet. Boston,
Massachusetts, March 2008 - Delivering Blues music to appreciative
listeners is part of what makes life worth living for Holly Harris.
"So, a lot of people have been wondering where she was going to land
when the local radio station that broadcast her Blues music show for
16 years changed their format to delivering prepackage music. The
answer: an Internet radio show, 'Ultimate Blues With Holly Harris.'
"'The Blues is about life,' says Harris. 'It delivers the universal
themes of love, loss, joy, fun, and sadness inside some of the most
amazing music. That's why we love the Blues.'
"Harris has been working with Realization Pictures of Arlington,
Massachusetts informally for the past two years shooting casual,
backstage-style video podcasts with Blues musicians as they passed
through town. Now those podcasts, along with Harris' radio show, will
be available on www.ultimateblues.com.
"The show utilizes the streaming technology provided by Live365, an
online media broadcaster. By launching the show using the Internet,
Holly's interpretation of the blues is available to audiences
worldwide, breaking down the limits of traditional radio. The
'Ultimate Blues with Holly Harris' is available throughout the week so
listeners can appreciate the show at their leisure.
"Both Harris and Realization Pictures President, A. J. Dimaculangan,
are committed to producing a new three-hour radio show each week and
new video podcasts each month to provide Blues lovers world-wide with
the music and the stories of their favorite musicians - established
and up-and-coming.
"'We're thrilled to be launching this show with Holly,' boasts A. J.
Dimaculanagan. 'Holly is a pro who really knows her stuff and is
incredibly dedicated to what she does. As someone who loves the Blues
myself, this is one more excuse for me to immerse myself in the music.'"

APRIL VERCH
Canadian Fiddler's
Mini-Tour of Massachusetts
"It was April's time spent studying music at Berklee College of Music
in Boston (under Matt Glaser and Darol Anger) that first lead her to
blend together different forms of traditional music to form her own
distinct sound. She then launched her professional career by winning
the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and the Canadian Open
Fiddle Champion titles (the first and only woman to win both). In
addition to her vigorous touring schedule, she is in great demand for
her teaching skills at workshops, master classes and music camps. She
has released seven recordings to date, her 2001 Rounder Records
release earned a JUNO nomination (the Canadian equivalent to a Grammy)
for "Best Roots/Traditional Album". Her most recent release (2008)
features her touring band and includes the presence of familiar names
like Tim Stafford, Larry Cordle, Ron Block, Melonie Cannon, and Sam

Memorial at Pin-up Art Show
Burlesque Exhibit Will Raise Funds for Leukemia Research
CAMBRIDGE, MA - March 22, 2008 - The second annual Great Boston
Burlesque Exposition announced to day that a portion of the space at
their art show will be a memorial to Dave Stevens. Stevens, a glamour
artist best known as creator of The Rocketeeer and as the man who
re-discovered Bettie Page, died last week after a five year battle
with leukemia. He was 55 years old.
"Dave Stevens was one of the men who fired my love of The Golden Age,"
said Scratch, the conference organizer. "His passion and meticulous
attention to detail breathed life into an era that was gone before I
was born." Mr. Stevens' family asked that donations be made in his
memory to The Hairy Cell Leukemia Research Foundation. In keeping
with those wishes there will be a place for donations at the memorial.
The art show's organizer is Joe Kitsch, Boston-based artist who makes
object oriented art, such as paintings and sculptures, in a wide
variety of media. The exhibit is a display of the work of artists and
photographers whose work is inspired or directly influence by the
burlesque and pin-up world. A dozen artists and photographers are
included. Amongst them are:New York burlesque photographer Ed Barnas;
local rockabilly musician John Chaos; leader of charitable
organization "The Naughty Nurses", Adria Alumbagh.
-----
The Great Boston Burlesque Exposition and Vintage Fashion Fair runs
Friday, March 21 through Sunday, March 23rd at The Hyatt Regency in
Cambridge. The Art Show is open noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday. Three different burlesque shows are featured in the evenings.
Tickets vary in price by event; admission to The Vintage Fashion Fair
is $5 for the weekend, or $10 at the door. Advanced tickets may be

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England

at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
