BRATTLEBORO, VT, March 28 - Please don't let the length of this
newsletter issue fool you. Though it looks as though it will turn out
to be a good deal shorter than the typical recent issue, we actually
received at least as many news mailings as usual. Many of these
mailings, though, were quite brief; and several of them occasionally
combined for just one of the short items you will see posted here.
Let's get right into it, shall we?

Ain't them cats the most!

A Fools and Stompers concert causes visions of Luanne to dance through
my head. If I remember right, she and I share a favorite Stompers
song - "First Kiss" - while my favorite by The Fools, hands down, is
"Alibi" and hers may have been on the live album: "Untouchables"? I
thought I would remember for sure, but I seem to be choking on this
question. What I recall for certain is that Luanne's favorite is, or
at least was, a serious song which, in the case of The Fools, narrows
the focus considerably. - Ed.

JESS TARDY
Sings Jess Tardy

Jess Tardy, not so very long ago, came up with the terrific idea of
doing whole concerts of Dinah Washington songs. This time, though,
Tardy is taking a break from the Dinah Washington tribute, and she is
breaking out some Jess Tardy originals for a show at Toad.

"I'm doing my original tunes for the first time in ages, so if you've
only heard me doing the Dinah Washington stuff as of late, consider
yourself warned. It's confessional breakup song time again!

"It'll be at Toad, so there's no cover charge ... which means more
money for beer or for dinner afterwards at Christopher's, right next
door. See below for more details on the venue, on my awesome
bandmates, and all that jazz."

JOHN LINCOLN WRIGHT
TOM LEHRER
CHUCK McDERMOTT AND WHEATSTRAW

It is not at all uncommon for us to receive inquiries about how to get
recordings by Cambridge country singer-songwriter

- JOHN LINCOLN WRIGHT.

The latest person making such an inquiry said she found five JLW
videos on YouTube. This could be of some interest.

Another correspondent - in this instance, a member of the Lewis
kindred - made mention of YouTube videos of former Cambridge
mathematician-singer-songwriter

- TOM LEHRER.

Gee... He said the performances were enhanced by seeing Lehrer's
facial features and expressions. Reason enough to visit YouTube.

Incidentally, while looking into availability of the Boston-Cambridge
country records we were asked about, at Gemm.com I found "You Can't
Get There From Here" by John Lincoln Wright and an equally vinyl
long-player by Chuck McDermott and Wheatstraw (though I am drawing a
momentary blank on which title). The Wheatstraw recordings have since
totally sold out.

BOY

- - THAT

- - - - WAS

- - - - - - FAST!

Evidently there are some serious Chuck McDermott fans out there!

We were saddened over the holiday weekend to receive notice of two
recent deaths.

JOHN FOWLER
1965-2008
Voodoo Jets Drummer

The Voodoo Jets Mourn the loss of Drummer John Fowler

Outstanding Talent, Played With Steelheart, SMOKE, Others...

John Fowler: Nov. 21st, 1965 - March 21st, 2008

March 22nd, 2008 - The Voodoo Jets (www.thevoodoojets.com), have
joined friends and family in mourning the loss of standout drummer,
dear friend, and loving father John Fowler. Fowler, who gained
notoriety for touring and recording with the band Steelheart, with the
1990 hit song "I'll Never Let You Go" (Angel Eyes), also dedicated
himself to projects such as The Voodoo Jets, SMOKE, and Hipnotic.
Fowler also instructed hundreds of drum students in the southern
Connecticut region.

Fowler had been on life support in a Connecticut hospital after
suffering a brain aneurism last Monday. John's beloved son Sebastian
along with close friends and family shared his final moments bedside
while blasting The Voodoo Jets track "Spaceman" in the hospital's ICU.
Funeral and burial ceremonies will be held in the coming days.

Donations: Donations can be made to The Sebastian Fowler ROCKS

TOM "TAS" CALO

Tom "Tas" Calo
died on March 16

Tas played bass in several Boston bands in the 70s and into the 80s
and had many friends in the music community. His 1973-1983 bands included

- Webb Hall
- Where's Carl
- The Zoo Types
- Little Green Men
- The Phantoms

The Zoo Types released a single and played in the first WBCN Rumble at
the Rat, 1979.

Tas played bass on the single, "Any Day" (1982) by The Phantoms.

Tas was a father and an artist and also worked as a stagehand/sound
guy for a Boston sound company. He was more recently trying his hand
at music blogging and photography, writing as "Kaiser Ape."

The Boston Globe gave his name as Thomas J. Calo and said he was of
Burlington and formerly of Medford, both in Massachusetts. According
to the Globe, his wife and son were Jane (Hanley) Calo and Paul Calo,
both of Burlington. His sisters and brothers-in-law were Jo-Ann and
Joseph "Butch" Panniello of Maine and Annmarie and Thomas Christensen
of New Hampshire.

WE RECEIVED SEVERAL ITEMS from different sources. I combined them to
make this information accessible to more readers, even those who may
be pressed for time. - Ed.

GUITAR HERO: AEROSMITH
An Update for Players

One of my kinfolk sent an update on

- GUITAR HERO: AEROSMITH.

He says, "Aerosmith will not be an all-Aerosmith game with an
all-Aerosmith soundtrack. Instead, it will evidently be a MOSTLY
Aerosmith soundtrack."

Variety is said to be the spice of life, and this arrangement is
unlikely to do any harm. Still, this is good information to have
before making a purchase decision.

FAT (1970s Western Massachusetts Band)
A Query

Referring to a "Pioneer Valley band called Fat," an e-mail
correspondent asked, "Are these guys, Fat, the band that did a song
called 'Rags to Riches'? It went like 'I think I'll go from rags to
riches ... and kiss off all you SOBs...' etc."

It has been a heck of a long time since I heard any actual Fat music,
so I am putting out this question against the possibility one or more
of our readers may know the answer. If you do and you would be
willing to share your information, please e-mail us by way of the
following Web page:

PRINCETON
Recording Update From Pete Weiss

Pete Weiss of Vermont's Verdant Studio and Boston's Weisstronauts
periodically puts out a fantastic newsletter, bringing in information
about acts familiar and otherwise.

- PRINCETON

is a Los Angeles outfit. The band's name may bring to mind fear of
the College Boards and the Graduate Record Exam - it does for me
anyway - but the Weiss newsletter makes this group sound as though its
music would appeal to lots of our readers.

"PRINCETON:

"Lately there's been a buzz about this Los Angeles collective built
around twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel. And rightly so. Soaring,
literate, sophisticated chamber pop with lush orchestrations. And
these guys are only 21 to boot. I mixed their upcoming EP at Verdant,
transferring track files and mixes via the interweb. Mastering was
deftly handled by Jeff Lipton at Peerless. Recommended if you like
Nick Drake, The Kinks, Belle and Sebastian, Simon and Garfunkel."

EILEN JEWELL BAND
Treating the Dutch

One at a Time

"The Netherlands welcomed Eilen and the band with open arms and big
smiles. Attendance records were shattered (ok, well the record was
broken in Bergen Op Zoom). The show with Kris Delmhorst at Paradiso
in Amsterdam sold out and the shows in Oss, Weert and Rotterdam were
excellent. In Rotterdam, the band shared the stage with the likes of
Kris D., Josh Ritter and more at the Singasong Festival."

ROCK BAND

A Player's Commentary
on New Downloadable Content

Since the recent update in Rock Band allows you to buy your music in
the game without going to the marketplace for it, I decided to check
out the interface and then buy the Boston pack that way. For the most
part, it's a pretty slick interface; it now allows you to do songs
sorted in various methods, allows previews for at least some songs (I
don't know if every song has a preview), and even charts difficulty
of the songs for each "band member," as well as the whole band.

For example, Boston tends to have a low Guitar difficulty, but a high
Vocal difficulty. I haven't found where I put my headset, so I
haven't even tried vocals yet. However, it goes without saying that
Brad Delp's vocals are going to be harder than your average Joe's.

Anyway, the title of the e-mail. The Who, Nirvana, and Metallica
have all (sort of) been confirmed for full record downloads. "Who's
Next" was the first confirmed, then Nirvana's "Nevermind," and
Metallica's got a record confirmed, we just don't really know which
one. They have a filter for albums which is empty with a "Coming
Soon" note. It's like they're taunting us, though I'm sure it's
really just a placeholder for when they do put up a record.

It's especially funky when you consider that they've now had two
six-song track packs: one by the Grateful Dead and this new one by
Boston. Since those six songs are all from Boston's debut album, it's
bordering on a full record.

YOUNG @ HEART CHORUS
DRUNK STUNTMEN

Releasing the New CD
When Not Performing Stunts in Hollywood

"Freddy Freedom and Stuntman Steve are going to be heading out West
with the Young@Heart Chorus in mid April. There, they will be
performing on the Ellen Degeneres Show and the Tonight Show with Jay
Leno. There is also a performance schedule for the Wilshire Theater.

"In addition to their appearance at the Rt. 63 Roadhouse THIS
WEEKEND... (Am I being redundant?) There are three other CD Release
parties on the upcoming schedule. The first being in New York City at
the Rodeo Bar, April 4. Then there will be the triumphant return to
Church in Boston on Thursday, April 24, and then the Northampton
release party the following night, April 25, at the Iron Horse Music
Hall."

DON WHITE AND CHRISTINE LAVIN
Together Again ... Maybe

"Christine And Don Conquer America (And Maybe Canada Too.)

"Christine Lavin had so much fun at the shows at The Regent that she
has offered to try to book a series of Co Bills with her and I around
the country. She feels that the combination of her and I together is
a great night out and she is willing to try to pitch the idea to any
venue that she can think of. Am I dreaming? Probably. But in this
dream she has already composed a sales pitch for prospective club
owners describing how special she feels a co bill with her and I is
and how she is anxious to bring the event to audiences around the
country. The other evidence indicating that this might not be a dream
is that my agent and Christine's agent are already exchanging booking
information and beginning the process of trying to book some of these
shows.

"So, as many of you know, I have been very resistant to the idea of
performing in places where I am not well known. I am just not at a
place in my life where I can justify performing for gas money.
However, the possibility of a co bill with me and Ms. Lavin changes my
view dramatically. What am I saying? I am saying that for all of you
good and patient folks outside New England who have been asking me to
find some way to perform in your area, the possibility just got a lot
bigger. Where does Christine perform near you? Let me know and I
will talk to her about it. Then consider contacting the venue to let
them know that if they book us you will come and bring all your
friends. (Are you hearing me Tampa and Ontario?)"

ERIN McKEOWN
Institute for Musical Arts
Fund Raiser

I DID NOT NOTICE ANYTHING CLEARLY MARKED indicating whether the
following is still up-to-date. My best guess is that it is. McKeown
& Co. included a contact Web address for those wanting more
information. - Ed.

"McKEOWN has been a long-time supporter and instructor at the Goshen,
Massachusetts-based Institute for Musical Arts, a year-round resource
and summer camp for women musicians. the IMA is building a huge,
state-of-the art recording studio for both students and professionals.
this is an amazing resource to have in western massachusettes. the
IMA is now raising money to finance the studio's completion, and now's
your chance to contribute.

"McKEOWN has donated a signed Martin Backpacker guitar for eBay auction.

"other contributors include gwen stefani (signed memorabilia), ani
difranco (guitar), bonnie raitt, gail ann dorsey, allison miller
(cymbals and sticks), indigo girls, melissa ferrick (guitar), and
more. check out ima.org for complete details."

It just occurred to me that we have at least one other news item: not
entirely about music yet likely to be of some interest anyway. But
today's (Friday's) mini-snowstorm threw me off-schedule. And since I
stand a chance of getting out of here early, I think I'd better do it.

Until next time...

believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.

:

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.
