BRATTLEBORO, VT, April 12 - This has been another super busy week.
This newsletter issue probably has as many items as other recent
issues, but I had to sift through many more news e-mails than usual to
find those pieces posted here.

I managed to fit into this issue everything except for one
announcement that might be better held 'til next week anyway. Also,
in the Friday-Saturday overnight, we received a Don White newsletter
which I will have to look at sometime after sending this issue.
Otherwise, what appears below for news is what we've got.

A Worldwide Bluegrass Music Month press release from Rounder Records
appears at or near the bottom of this issue. For some reason, I was
permitted to copy down to but NOT including the URL at the end of the
release. One of our e-mail correspondents may have described having
the same experience at a different site. I have never heard of a Web
address being copy protected. Have you?
.

HEARTFELT THANKS to Jerry Carbone, Brian Hackert, and Jeanne Walsh.
I made several useful and important research finds this week, none of
which would have happened now and possibly ever without tips from each
of these three gentlefolk, information technologists, and scholars.

THE PANDORAS
Request for E-Mail Contact

If you have an e-mail address for one or more members of the 1960s
Boston rock band,

- THE PANDORAS,

and you would be willing to share your information, please e-mail us
by way of the following Web page:

http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm

Or, perhaps it might work better for members of The Pandoras to e-mail us.

Either is fine from our point of view.

I have an e-mail friend who is a daughter of a Pandora, and she and I
are in current contact; but the addresses I had for other band members
no longer work.

Some members of The Pandoras, incidentally, got together for a little
music making last summer or maybe it was the summer before. I
wouldn't have minded hearing that. These gals were great. I'm
betting they still are.

ANDREA SUROVA
CD Long-Player Is Forthcoming

"Andrea Surova Full Length Album nears completion

"After extensive Mixing in Miami with 3 time grammy award winning
mixer Bob St. John we are getting close to unveiling her masterpiece!!!!!!

"More more news to come on this in April!"

SOURCE: Anthony J. Resta, "StudioBopnique Newsletter April 08," March
28, 2008.

I HAVE NOT HEARD A LOT of the music of Andrea Surova; but what I HAVE
heard, I really liked. Her music is geared to broad acceptance, and
it is a style she does very well.

Calling this project Surova's "masterpiece" may be a statement of one
person's point of view, but it doesn't make it wrong. I once received
an e-mail from someone who said that, at that very minute,
singer-songwriter John Coster was making his masterpiece. The
recording he was working on was ultimately released as "The World Has
Changed," and it really is a gem: right up there with his dazzling
earlier releases, "Jacob's Reunion" and "Dangerous Kingdom of the
Heart" - his masterpieces.

We will see whether Andrea Surova is doing the same. Could be.

APOLLO SUNSHINE
CD Reissues With Bonus Tracks

"Our two albums, 'Katonah' and 'Apollo Sunshine' have just been
re-released by a new label! And with these new releases, a few bonus
tracks have been added.

"'Apollo Sunshine' now features the tracks 'U & I' and 'Strange Things.'

"'Katonah' features a 20 minute video documentary about the building
of the barn, the recording of the album, has live clips and more.

"We are excited these albums are hitting the shelves again. Our old
label, Spin Art went out of business and our records disappeared!

"These albums also are now available overseas for the first time ever.
So if you have any pals in Europe and beyond, give em' a heads up!"

THE FOOLS
The Video

My computer is on dialup, and I don't particularly mind, either. But
I - DO - mind that I cannot attest personally for the following link
leading to the "Doo Wah Diddy" video by The Fools - the video that ran
on MTV, e'er so long ago. Be that as it may, I am told that this is
the Fools' "Doo Wah Diddy" video. If you follow the link and learn
otherwise, please let me know.

Otherwise, I will remain of the belief that this is the real thing.

KRIS DELMHORST
Strumming for Two

"KD will be making a quick visit to the midwest this week with
'Shotgun Singer' CD release shows in Chicago on Wednesday, Minneapolis
on Thursday, and Madison on Friday. ... For those of you in other
areas of the middle of the country, we're sorry the show won't be
coming to you this time around. Many of you know that Kris is about
seven months pregnant, so she is starting to ease up on touring as the
spring moves along!"

SOURCE: Kris Delmhorst eList, "KD in the Midwest This Week," April 8,
2008.

I GUESS THE THEME IS, Kris Delmhorst is expecting so don't most of us
get to expecting KD. Kris Delmhorst's latest three or four albums
have been outstanding (I have not heard "Shotgun Singer"), and now may
be the ideal time to buy one or more of her CDs.

BIG DIPPER
The Box Set

There was a time when I would not have been able to imagine stringing
together the Boston band name, "Big Dipper," with the phrase, "box
set," but lo! there actually seems to be just such a thing.

'80s/'90s Boston rock 'n' rollers, I ask you. How do you plan to
spend your economic stimulus rebate money? Here is one possible way.

I understand the following was copied from the Amazon.com website:

Editorial Reviews
Product Description

This 3-CD limited edition set is comprised of 49 re-mastered tracks
from the legendary Boston band's original tapes, plus the mysterious
"Faith Healer" video, all for an incredibly low price. Chronicling
Big Dipper's years on the Homestead label, discs one and two include
the 1987 EP "BooBoo" and the LPs "Heavens" (1987) and "Craps" (1988).
Nine little or seldom heard bonus tracks from that era fill out Disc
2. Disc 3 compiles fifteen previously unreleased tracks from the
band's 1991 and 1992 post-Epic recording sessions. Extensive liner
notes from the original band members and Tom Scharpling (host of The
Best Show on WFMU).

SOMETYMES WHY
Sometymes Why Not

The original music trio, Sometymes Why, is planning a May tour; and
two-thirds of the group just played a show in Brooklyn, according to
the schedule. Why only two-thirds of the trio?

Glad you asked.

Ruth Ungar Merenda had a baby on January 28: William P. Merenda.

"He's spent the past two months doubling in size and listening to lots
of Bessie Smith records."

SOURCE: Sometymes Why, "Spring Tour," April 10, 2008.

OBVIOUSLY THIS GUY is being brought up right.

According to the Dalai Lama - who, among much else, is the world's
greatest "Cheers" fan - one learns more in one's first five years than
in any other five-year period in one's life. Thus we might imagine
that, in addition to doubling in size, young William Merenda has
gained much knowledge and wisdom. Which brings us back to those
Bessie Smith records he's been listening to... - Ed.

then we are gonna hit the road and see all of you. We can't wait."

FANFARE MAGAZINE
A Query

Do any of you subscribe to Fanfare magazine or possibly have newsstand
copies on hand?

We received an e-mail of interest (to us, at least) about items in the
"current issue." One problem is, I am having trouble telling how
current "current" is.

The e-mail told us of a feature article about pianist Rosemary Tuck,
accompanied somehow by a record review written by Martin Anderson.
But when I checked the current issue's table of contents online, I
found no reference to either of these pieces. Of course, chances are
strong the website simply has not yet been updated. Then I checked
the table of contents for the next issue but found that the T of C is
not yet complete. A search of the archive did not turn up either of
these pieces.

I am stuck.

So I am hoping some kindhearted Fanfare reader would mail us these
notices, if it would not be too much trouble or expense.

If you can help or if you know someone who could, please e-mail us by
way of the following Web page:

1932 RADIO POLL
Listeners Loving the Old Songs

In 1932, New York City radio station WABC polled its listeners about
their favorite songs, according to "Votes Cast by 6,000 Listeners
Favor the Old Heart Songs," The New York Times, May 8, 1932. This
poll brought in a big number of listener responses: 6,000. And the
results were quite consistent and equally amazing.

Now, it is worth considering that 1932 was already deep into the jazz
era. The jazz world by then had big stars such as Fletcher Henderson,
Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Lang, and many others. And a
lot of hip jazz songs were around, as our own Jim Kweskin's fans would
know. But WABC listeners mostly dug back in the range of twenty years
to a hundred years in picking personal favorites. Among the most
popular songs were "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Silver Threads Among
the Gold," "When You and I Were Young, Maggie," and "Wild Irish Rose."

This phenomenon of appreciating really old songs didn't end with the
year 1932. Early Boston rocker Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon dug deep
into American music history for one of his big hits, "Way Down Yonder
in New Orleans." It seems to me that in the 1970s I was listening to
one of that decade's big stars, Linda Ronstadt, singing "Silver
Threads Among the Gold." One of her contemporaries, Jennifer Warnes,
recorded a wonderful version of Stephen C. Foster's "Hard Times Come
Again No More." Once in the 1980s, at halftime during one of the big
football contests - the Rose Bowl, I think - I heard a marching band
play one of the big hits from early in the Civil War, "Kingdom Coming"
- a powerful antislavery song written for a minstrel show no less.
Celtic punk rockers The Dropkick Murphys out of Boston performed and
recorded "Tessie," a song that was a hundred years old or close to it,
to help along the Red Sox to a World Series championship. Funny thing
is, it worked. And as phenomenally amazing as Hank Williams was as a
songwriter, he reached back a good many years to cover what would
become one of his signature songs, "Lovesick Blues."

...

Such a beautiful dream
I hate to think it's all over
I lost my heart it seems
I've grown so used to you somehow
I'm nobody's sugar daddy now
And I'm lo O o O onesome
I've got the lovesick blues.

I'm in love, I'm in love
With a beautiful girl
That's what's the matter with me...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

APRIL 10, 2008

MAY IS THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF

WORLDWIDE BLUEGRASS MUSIC MONTH

ROUNDER CELEBRATES WITH SEVERAL BLUEGRASS RELEASES

Burlington, MA – For the past 20 years, May has been regarded as
Worldwide Bluegrass Music Month, an idea that began in 1987 with Bob
Wolff, a performing arts consultant from NYC and an enthusiastic
bluegrass fan. Wolff proposed the idea – after he had attended the
International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Fan Fest in
Owensboro, KY – as a means to develop a larger audience for bluegrass
music. Wolff recalls, "My concept was that if people got to stand as
close to the musicians as the musicians were to each other, there was
no way that they could go away anything but fans. If a friend invited
them to an event, perhaps paying the price of attendance, it would be
likely they would return to another and, if these folks left that
group or that show with some way to get news of bluegrass events they
could attend, they would become part of the audience."

With the help of fans around the world, May 1988 was chosen as the
First Annual Worldwide Bluegrass Music Month. Though recognized by
the IBMA in 1989, the concept is not supported by any one association;
it is solely organized by bluegrass devotees who ensure that May is
filled with bluegrass activities in their neighborhoods.

Now a resident of Milton, MA, Bob Wolff had this to say about WWBGMM,
"My theory was that if more people were introduced to bluegrass music,
the audience would grow. It seemed to me to be very important that
the audience grow if I were going to be able to continue to hear the
music. The music is so very captivating. It is not the particular
month that matters; it is the opportunity to get non-fans to hear the
music that counts!"

believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.
.

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.
