BRATTLEBORO, VT, April 19 - This issue of our newsletter has been
dealt a cruel hand by the old clock. 2008, so far, has been easily
our busiest year ever. This phenomenon has been very steady. And the
present week has been our busiest week of 2008. But just when I
really needed a minimum of two extra hours to work on this issue, what
I was given, instead, is one hour LESS than usual.

I will do the best I can in the time available and pick up the pieces
later as opportunity permits.

New England's popular music community has been running at a fast pace
for a good three months now, and it is a little hard to account for.
Supposedly the country has been winding down into an economic slump,
but all we are seeing around here is the scene shifting up into high gear.

Go figure.

So much news. So little time to compile it in.
.

<> Toward the end of this issue, we have a fair number of press
releases, as well as somewhat similar items from artist mailings.
They cover a reasonably broad range of interests. Why not scroll all
the way to the bottom to see if any of these more extensive pieces may
be of interest to you.

GREETINGS FROM AREA CODE 207
Vol. 7

<> Volume 7 of the Greetings From Area Code 207 series just arrived in
our mailbox, and we got it in our CD player in record time. This is
an exceptional series of various artists, local music releases, with a
little something for nearly everyone. The cuts average out a bit
retro, and the variety is terrific.

So far, favorite selections include "Another Fine Mess" by The
Boneheads, "Appetite" by Darien Brahms, "Be Here Now" by Ray
Lamontagne, "Black and Blue" by Jason Spooner, "Call for Arms" by Sara
Cox, "Hold Your Tongue" by Subject Bias, "Light at the End" by Rustic
Overtones, "One More Gig in Paradise" by The Coming Grass, and
"Waking" by Seekonk.

That's a lot of favorites to come off one compilation album. And this
is after only one and a half listens. Other favorites may emerge with
repeated playing. This is a VERY strong set.

As veteran readers of this newsletter know, it means a lot to me when
an album has its strongest material sprinkled, here and there,
throughout its length. Far too many CD producers front-load all the
tracks thought to have greatest popular appeal, and their records run
out of steam in a really big hurry. So I am pleased to no end to say
that GFAC207 Vol. 7 ends strong, with "Varsity Drag" by Billy Ruane,
"Black and Broken Little Heart" by Jon Nolan, and "Light at the End"
by Rustic Overtones.

Outstanding.

Are you looking for a way to spend your Economic Stimulus rebate
money? For many, picking up a copy of "Greetings From Area Code 207
Vol. 7" would be a good way.

LYS GUILLORN
The Great Cowgirl News Blackout of 2007
Is History

"Howdy!

"Be assured that I have missed you over these long months of
dreariness. I'm out of hibernation and very excited to be opening for
Scout Niblett at Cafe Nine on Tuesday, April 29. It should be a great
night. A couple of days before that, on Saturday the 26th will be a
bill I put together with some folks on tour at Las Vetas Lounge in
Fairfield.

"In the news: there is a comp track and interview with me in issue #8
of Dream Magazine out of Nevada City, California, and I've heard
reports there is a review of the 'Three Songs' EP in the April issue
of Tape Op Magazine.

"In other news: I'm most likely going to be self-releasing an oddities
collection soon - one offs and comp tracks. Things I've been doing
while I was supposed to be doing other things.

"I'm also helping put together a book of my friend and mentor C.A.
Vanaria's rock and roll photography from her Boston days (late 70s /
early 80s punk/new wave/rock) if you want to take a peek (and there's
also an interview I did with her) it's at

WEISSTRONAUTS
The "Instro-tainment" CD

"The Weisstronauts celebrate the release of their long-awaited fourth
instrumental album, 'Instro-tainment!' at Church next Friday! It's
true, the album has been in the works for a while and the final polish
took the longest to apply. But, dang, it was worth the wait ... it's
SO SHINY.

"'Instro-tainment' contains fourteen soon-to-be Weisstronauts
classics, including live staples such as Fisticuffs, Seven X's, Caixa
Dos Moluscos, Surf's Down, Get It Together, as well as a rippin' cover
of the Monkees' Pleasant Valley Sunday. Album guests include Bow
Thayer on banjo, as well as Doug Yule (formerly of the iconic rock
group, The Velvet Underground) on bass and fiddle.

"This new album can now be ordered by visiting

http://www.weissy.com/buystuff/

"Please note: we don't actually have the CD's physically in hand yet,
but will send them out to buyers as soon as we get them (next week
sometime...) Of course we'll have them (as well as nifty new
T-shirts) available for purchase at the CD release party.

"As for this CD release party, Weisstronaut 6-stringer George Hall
(mastermind behind Instro-tainment's cover design) has put together an
amazing summary of the evening's goodness, so we're just going to
paste it below. Hope to see y'all there!

[Below]

"Weisstronauts CD Release

"The Weisstronauts will be staging a CD Release party for our own new
CD, 'Instro-tainment!' Two of the tracks – the opener, 'Fisticuffs,'
and an instrumental cover of the Monkees 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' -
can be heard at the `Nauts myspace page
(www.myspace.com/weisstronauts), should you find yourself so moved.
You can even download 'Fisticuffs' for a limited time, as our salute
to the current 'User generated content will make YOUR band RICH!!'
phenomenon, which we know deep in our hearts to be incredibly likely.

"Ok, now where was I ... ah yes, the CD release party! Yes, the CD
release (old-school, hard-copy, .wav file etc.) party is at Church, a
relatively new club in the Fenway in Boston, located in exactly the
same spot as the former Linwood Grill (note to drivers: the Sox are
away that night, there will be parking!). The rest of the bill
includes the post-modernistic beatnik-ery of Lars Vegas (a personal
fave of mine, individually and as a group), the bass-free pop and rock
maneuverings of My Own Worst Enemy (with a recent Pete Weiss produced
CD of their own) and the technologically savvy instrumental rock
stylings of the Invisible Rays, long admired by the individual
Weisstronauts and with whom we are all a-quaver with excitement to be
finally sharing a bill with."

BOSTON BABYDOLLS
Website Hacked

<> The Boston Babydolls website has been hacked, according to a BBD
mailing that I may run next issue, available time permitting. Company
members are not certain whether this was a strike against burlesque, a
strike against themselves, or just the work of a hacker who commits
this sort of act for no other reason than that it is what he or she does.

Have you ever read published comments of hackers after they have been
caught by law enforcement? If you have, I'll bet you would agree with
me that included among the hackers of this world are some remarkably
dense individuals.

Anyway, if suddenly you find yourself on the Boston Babydolls
e-mailing list, you need to know that this comes as a result of the
recent hacking. It really is not the Babydolls' fault, and they are
trying to make it quick and easy for unwilling new subscribers to get
off the BBD mailing list.

Fredhead-Friendly Events

PRESS RELEASE FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

9TH ANNUAL ROOTS ON THE RIVER FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES STELLAR LINE-UP OF MUSIC

FESTIVAL TO TAKE PLACE IN BELLOWS FALLS, VERMONT JUNE 5-8, 2008

Western New England's favorite summer festivals. Featuring world-class
roots music, free ample parking, terrific food and drink at reasonable
prices, children's activities, great festival merchandise, a musical
equipment swap tent, and the best fans anywhere, Roots on the River is
an unbeatable four days of music and entertainment.

THURSDAY, JUNE 5: Kicking off the weekend will be LORI MCKENNA in a
full-blown concert production at the beautifully restored 553 seat
Bellows Falls Opera House. MARK ERELLI will open the show. The Opera
House boasts outstanding acoustics and lighting system, along with the
most comfortable theatre seating in New England. The concert will be
preceded by a Deluxe Reception for those Deluxe Weekend Ticket holders.

On the Canal from 12 noon until 2:00pm. Details will be posted on the
website, www.rootsontheriver.com, as they are updated.

At 4:00 PM the music moves to the Bellows Falls Farmers' Market,
across the canal from Boccelli's. THE LONESOME BROTHERS will be

Then, on to The Big Tent at the Festival's Main Venue behind the
Everyday Inn for the Friday night show. This show will open with THE
LONESOME BROTHERS, followed by THE BOTTLE ROCKETS from Festus,
Missouri, who will play the Festival during their 15th Anniversary

electricity, no running water and incredible acoustics designed to
amplify the 18th century preachers it was built to accommodate, we
welcome back long-time Festival favorite, MARY GAUTHIER. She returns
after a two year absence to focus her concise, poetic lyrics on the
midnight hours of desperate souls and confirms that she's among the
best singer-songwriters of her generation, especially when it comes to
illustrating ramblers, derelicts and anyone who struggles with demons
in the night. FRED EAGLESMITH & THE FLYING SQUIRRELS will round out

MARBLHEAD STUDENTS JOIN THE
JAY UNGAR AND MOLLY MASON FAMILY BAND
AT THE ME & THEE

[MARBLEHEAD] On Friday April 25, the me & thee will feature four
members of an extremely talented family who perform as the Jay Ungar
and Molly Mason Family Band. The band features Jay, Molly, Jay's
daughter Ruth Ungar Merenda, and her husband Michael Merenda. In
addition to these noted musicians, ten Marblehead students will be
accompanying them on their signature song "Ashokan Farewell." The
coffeehouse is located in the Unitarian Church in Marblehead.

Danielle Yeti, the Marblehead strings instructor for Grades 6-12
approached the me&thee earlier this season and simply requested a
discount on a block of tickets so that her students could experience
this Jay Ungar tune in person since they were learning it this year.
Little did she know that her students would be invited to play along
with Jay and Molly. "It's very exciting to be a part of this concert
with Jay Ungar and Molly Mason. When I asked about group tickets to
the concert, I never expected my students would be invited to play
with these wonderful musicians! To meet the composer of one of their
favorite pieces and perform along with him will be an experience the
students will remember for a long time." Ten Marblehead students
(seven violists, one violist, and one cellist) will be making music
and making me&thee history by bridging the gap between generations and
from performers and audience members.

Jay Ungar & Molly Mason are extraordinary musicians. If you didn't
know it before, you sure did after Ken Burns' The Civil War hit the
airwaves. Their performance of Jay's haunting composition "Ashokan
Farewell"— the musical hallmark of the PBS series — earned the couple
international acclaim. The soundtrack won a Grammy and "Ashokan
Farewell" — originally inspired by Jay & Molly's annual fiddle and
dance camps — was nominated for an Emmy. Since joining forces in the
late 1970s, Jay and Molly have become one of the most celebrated duos
on the American acoustic music scene. With their comfortable sense of
fun and their love of music, they make each concert a musical journey
— sometimes spanning two continents and two centuries. Their
incomparable warmth and wit — coupled with consummate musicianship —
have delighted audiences worldwide. They've garnered legions of fans
through their appearances on Great Performances, A Prairie Home
Companion, their own public radio specials, and work on film
soundtracks such as Brother's Keeper, Legends of the Fall, and a host
of Ken Burns documentaries.

Ruth and Mike Merenda are from the band, The Mammals, who played at
the me & thee two springs ago. Ruth Merenda cut her teeth on
traditional music, and grew up to be a top-flight performer. She
brings fiddle, ukulele, guitar and deeply moving vocal performances to
the Family Band. Mike Merenda favored rock and ska before being drawn
into the world of acoustic music. He adds old-time banjo, guitar and
percussion to the mix. Their first CD as a duo, "The Honeymoon Agenda"
was actually made on their honeymoon taking advantage of a wedding
gift of free studio time. It is just a coincidence that the name
rhymes with theirs. The CD is a great mix of some covers of
well-known performers, some lesser know performers and their own work.
Michael Simmons, writing in High Times, says "Ungar is a sensational
singer... Merenda is one of the best songwriters of his generation -
literate, political, melodic, alternately angry and satirical and
sensual." Ruth and Michael travel with their son Will, born January
28, 2008. He's not playing an instrument yet but is sometimes heard
none the less.

Four terrific musicians. Put them together and the sum really is
greater than its parts. Double fiddles, sweet vocal harmonies and
rhythmic energy abound as two generations collaborate to entertain you
with music from the heart and soul of America.

Door charge for the performance by the Jay Ungar and Molly Mason
Family Band is $20. Tickets are available by phone at 781-631-8987
or at www.meanthee.org. Tickets are also available in Marblehead at
both the Spirit of '76 Bookstore and Arnould Gallery. As at all me &
thee coffeehouse events, refreshments are available, including
homemade pastries, coffee, and teas. The me & thee has a
handicapped-accessible entrance, is a smoke-free environment, and is
easily reached by MBTA bus. The me & thee is the oldest continually
running acoustic coffeehouse in New England, and probably the country.
The me & thee has been and will always be a volunteer, non-profit
organization sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of
Marblehead. For information and directions, call 781-631-8987 and
check the website www.meandthee.org.

>>>

Next concert: May 2, Holly Near & Emma's Revolution

CALENDAR/PSA: Friday, April 25, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Family Band
at the me & thee. Door charge is $20. The coffeehouse is located at
the Unitarian Universalist Church at 28 Mugford Street, Marblehead and
starts at 8:30 p.m. Call 781-631-8987 or go to www.meandthee.org for
information and directions.

GRACE POTTER AND THE NOCTURNALS
Looking Ahead to Summer

We got shortchanged on time just at the point when we needed extra.
At the same time, the latest Grace Potter and the Nocturnals mailing
was the very last of this week's stragglers. The only way we can fit
material from it into this issue is to run it whole ... which we are
doing right here, right now:

Here we are again, mud season in Vermont with the summer touring
madness right around the bend. I'm sure Mother Nature will toy with
our heads by unleashing some more snow, but we're ok with that since
we're gearing up for tours with Gov't Mule, the Black Crowes, and the
Dave Matthews Band! We're honored to share lots of extremely exciting

believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.
.

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
.

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or
location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise
confirming details.
