BRATTLEBORO, VT, April 25 - The New England popular music community is
running three shifts a day, working all weekend long, and otherwise
being productive as all get out. By virtue of being not unanimously
welcome at my usual haunt, one out of every three Saturdays, I have a
little extra time today to work on this newsletter issue. But even
with some extra temporal elbow room, I won't have time to compile all
the news that has been e-mailed to us. Ever since the holiday season
drifted off into the long winter nights, we have received sacks and
sacks of news e-mails every week. To borrow The Beatles, it is all
too much.

Toward the end of this issue are press releases, as well as somewhat
similar, long-ish mailings. Acts and topics covered include Ken
Casey's new Boston baseball bar (we're betting on a loud jukebox), the
Chick Singer Night benefit, Jason Crigler, John Hiatt's Lifetime
Achievement Award, Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen, Sonya Kitchell, and
the Me & Thee Coffeehouse special showcase. So...

- - scroll

- - - - on

- - - - - - down!

I hope you have all gotten outdoors to enjoy this wonderful
summer-like weather. One of my own goals is to be athletic like Miss
Lyn; and to that end, my running program is back on track, so to
speak. Today will be my second time out. The first time, it is
totally unambiguous: I - WAY - overdid it. I thought that since I ran
much later than ever in 2007, according to the calendar, and started
earlier than ever in 2008 - thus having by far my shortest-ever
wintertime break - I might be able to start right in running close to
my full distance. I was wrong. So as Mickey Mantle often said, make
me your role model: don't be like me. We live and learn. My advice?
Be careful out there.

<> Any money from your Economic Stimulus rebate check that you can
spend on New England-connected music and at the region's nightspots,
music stores, and record shops would be much appreciated.

We, here, may be getting a small chunk of someone else's Economic
Stimulus rebate money: a recession-fighting windfall. I hear that one
of my all-time favorite New England albums, "Autre Chose" by that
ex-Loco hepcat Willie Alexander, is being given to us. Woo woo! Ga ga!
.

<> There is actually lots more. But I can't run if I don't get ready
to run, so I'm outta here.

Next week, same time, same place...

MADISON SMARTT BELL AND WYN COOPER
"Postcards Out of the Blue" CD

<> "I wanted to let you know that Madison Bell and I have a new cd
out, called POSTCARDS OUT OF THE BLUE. The 15 songs range from short
crooked ballads based on poems from my last book, POSTCARDS FROM THE
INTERIOR, to rock and blues numbers that address such subjects as
alcohol popsicles and loose fools. I wrote the words, Madison wrote
the music, and it was produced by the rock god Don Dixon, who
co-produced our first cd as well as the first two cds by REM.

"You can listen to several of the songs in their entirety at

http://www.myspace.com/bellandcooper/

where you can also see photos from our recording session last summer
in Nashville. You can sample all the songs at www.cdbaby.com, where
you can also buy the cd (for $9.99) or download the songs. Other
sites containing downloadable versions of the songs include itunes and
www.digstation.com. The cd is available at Amazon for $9.99, but the
cheapest way to get it is by sending a check made out to me for ten
dollars even, and I will pay for shipping.

"Our first cd, FORTY WORDS FOR FEAR, is also available on Amazon, or
from me for eight dollars. Songs from that cd have been used on five
tv shows over the last few years. Esquire called it 'sonic moonshine.'
So drink up!

"I apologize for the blatant self-promotion, but Madison and I are
very happy with the new cd and suspect you might be too."

THE REVELS

"There's a Meeting Here Tonight!"
A Dramatization of the Hutchinson Family Vocal Group

<> I have several mailing lists in addition to the one for this
newsletter. One of these mailing lists is dedicated to people who are
interested in the Hutchinson Family, a mid-nineteenth popular vocal
group. The Hutchinsons made their reputation by singing in impossibly
close harmony, but they are remembered a century and a half later for
having devoted their careers to what was then a widely despised cause,
the abolition of slavery. The Hutchinsons were so famous and infamous
that, in their own lifetimes, literally everyone in the country had an
idea who they were.

For decades, I have been researching the Hutchinson Family, and it
seems fair to say that I am as familiar with the group as anyone. I
have nothing but the best things to say about The Revels program,
"There's a Meeting Here Tonight!" It makes for a wonderful evening of
entertainment.

The Hutchinson Family is extraordinarily well documented. One of the
family members who did a really fantastic job of gathering together
and preserving the Hutchinsons' papers and memorabilia was their
brother-in-law Ludlow Patton. He spent much of his adult years
assembling a huge scrapbook that was rich in family history and in
American history. The word, "scrapbook," in the name of this
organization, the New England Music Scrapbook, is in honor of Ludlow's
work on his Hutchinson Family Scrapbook.

Ludlow Patton never sought fame or notoriety, so one might imagine,
more than a hundred years after he died, he might be pretty nearly
forgotten. But he performed countless good deeds, and I know a number
of people today, in addition to myself, who absolutely love the guy.
We all are on a first-name basis with him.

Here is the information we were sent about the upcoming Revels show,
"There's a Meeting Here Tonight!":

The Revels are coming, the Revels are coming!

Please join the Revels on Saturday, May 3rd @ 7pm for "There's a
Meeting Here Tonight!" - the story of America's first traveling family
singers - the Hutchinson Family of New Hampshire. The great showman
P.T. Barnum will narrate an evening full of music, drama, dance,
games, and juggling guaranteeing entertainment for all ages! The
Milford Historical Society will also be on hand with Hutchinson Family
memorabilia and museum objects from their collection.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased in Milford at the following
locations: the Wadleigh Memorial Library on Nashua Street, 'Toadstool
Books' in Lorden Plaza, and "Just Read Books" on South Street.

The performance will be held at the Amato Center located at 56 Mont
Vernon Street in Milford. This program is generously sponsored by the
Wadleigh Memorial Library, the Milford Historical Society, and the
Amato Family.

<> If I had my way, radio stations would play all types of music and
there would be statues of Mississippi John Hurt, Little Walter and Big
Joe Turner in every city park. But at least I can hope that enough
people get a chance to hear the Radio Kings and their own voice in the
American Music tradition. They deserve it. By the way, have I
mentioned that those guys play their asses off?
-Dave Alvin

<> Brian Templeton's hard-edged voice bites into impressively written
songs with total commitment. Templeton's vocals sound haunted and
honest, trapped in a world of trouble. Michael Dinallo's guitars work
like hip-pocket razors, slashing vibrato-laden licks into tunes or
drawing blood with emotionally knotted solos.
-Ted Drozdowski, The Boston Phoenix

<> A sensitive kind of stomp, with subtlely equaling thuddery... The
shuffles, strolls, and slow blues have kick because they invest in

THE GOODHUES BAND
Autoharping on a Point

<> "The Goodhues Band from right here in the North Shore, is a
foursome, with Kim Goodhue on vocals and autoharp; Geoff Goodhue,
vocals, guitar and mandolin; Trish DeCaprio, vocals and fiddle; and
Ryan Goodhue on keyboard and hand drums. Their repertoire covers
American 'roots' country, Appalachian, bluegrass, Southern gospel,
contemporary folk, traditional Celtic, and Irish 'pub' songs. They
emphasize close two- and three-part harmonies, polished instrumental
arrangements, and sincere, energetic delivery. Originally a duo, with
Ohio University alums Geoff and Kim playing a lot of old timey type
songs - pre-bluegrass, mountain, brothers' duets by the Louvin
Brothers, Stanley Brothers, and others like them - along with a few
originals, some folk, parlor songs, and some Grateful Dead/Old and In
the Way material. Around March of 2006, they were joined by younger
son, Ryan, on piano and handdrums, and Trish DeCaprio on fiddle and
vocals and have been a foursome since then, with a new emphasis on
Celtic (plus all their other material)."

CINDY KALLET AND GREY LARSEN
At the Meeting House Cafe
Bennington, Vermont
Friday, May 16

Press Release

CINDY KALLET and GREY LARSEN IN CONCERT
Friday, May 16 at The Meetinghouse Cafe in Bennington, VT

<> Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen, each well-known and loved for their
decades of music making, have joined musical forces in a new duo. They
will be performing at The Meetinghouse Cafe in Bennington, VT on
Friday, May 16 at 8 PM. Cindy is a superb singer, guitarist,
songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Grey is one of America's finest
players of the Irish flute and tin whistle, as well as an accomplished
singer and concertina, fiddle, piano and harmonium player. As
composers each has contributed to the unique tapestry of contemporary
folk and world music as it exists and flourishes in America today.
Together, they weave songs and tunes of vibrant color and rich texture.

Scott Alarik of The Boston Globe calls Cindy "...one of folk music's
most respected songwriters... provocative, heartwise, and original
...a brilliant guitarist... ". Mike Joyce of the Washington Post calls
Grey "... a gifted multi-instrumentalist who consistently demonstrates
his melodic finesse," while The New Mexico Daily describes his playing
as "positively spellbinding".

The duo's repertoire includes Cindy's sparkling original songs,
distinctive settings of traditional Irish music, Scandinavian fiddle
duets, old-time fiddle and guitar tunes from southern Indiana, and new
music that Cindy and Grey are inventing together. There is plenty of
variety and breadth of musical territory here, all deeply rooted in
folk traditions, and interwoven with the renaissance and baroque
counterpoint in which both Cindy and Grey, coincidentally, were
immersed while growing up. Included are vocal duets, guitar, Irish
flute, Irish alto flute, tin whistle, concertina, harmonium, and duet
fiddling, and plenty of stories that put the music into a personal
context. For more on Cindy and Grey, please visit www.cindykallet.com
and www.greylarsen.com.

The Meetinghouse Cafe is located at 108 School Street in Bennington.

CHICK SINGER NIGHT (CSN) BOSTON
CELEBRATES 4 YEARS OF
KEEPING THE ARTS ALIVE IN OUR SCHOOLS

SPECIAL 4TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWCASE EVENT
AT THE LEGENDARY

JOHNNY D'S
(17 HOLLAND STREET, DAVIS SQUARE – SOMERVILLE)

THURSDAY JUNE 5TH 2008
(8:30pm – 12am)

<> Did you know that research has shown that kids who are involved in
music score better on the SATs? Did you know that musical study
develops critical thinking and self discipline skills, improves a
child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities,
self-esteem and school attendance. Did you know that year after year,
budgetary cuts are causing music programs in many public schools to be
cut back and in some cases eliminated altogether?

For four years, CHICK SINGER NIGHT (CSN) BOSTON has been doing its
part to help combat this alarming trend. Please join us as we
celebrate our 4th anniversary with a special showcase and VIP party at
the legendary JOHNNY D'S (17 Holland Street, Davis Square –
Somerville) on Thursday, June 5, 2008. All profits from the evening
will be donated directly to music programs in local public schools.
Hosted by the Vykki Vox band and Jennifer Truesdale, the showcase will
feature hot up and coming artists Claire Vanderpot (9 yr old
singer/songwriter), Judy C - also releasing her new CD, Erinn Brown,
Jamie Lynn Hart , Grass Gypsys (back from the West Coast), Boston
Music Award Winner Chris Fitz (CSN's RU Man Enough Feature) and
Special Guest: Anna Freitas (featured performer, and CSN House Band
guitarist.)

Founded in Chicago, with the purpose of assisting community arts and
other charitable causes around the country, Chick Singer Night has
been rapidly expanding with support from NAMM, Berklee College of
Music, Jeannie Deva Voice Studios and many other local and national
organizations. As CSN National celebrates it's 20th anniversary,
chapters now include: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Las
Vegas, Boston and many other major cities, and is going international
this year with it's Sweden Chapter. CSN is supported by the national
non-profit organization, Breathe - A Foundation for the Artist.
Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Megan Mullally, Lisa Loeb,
Mandy Moore, Paul Shaffer and MTV have all been supportive of CSN and
many are continuing to take notice of this growing organization.

While the non-profit CSN Boston Showcase Series follows the basic
guidelines of the National Chick Singer Night organization, developed
over 20 years ago by LA's Lori Maier, CSN Boston has the added purpose
of raising awareness and funds for these crucial music programs in
our public schools and to date has donated over $5,000 to local
schools. CSN Boston, in cooperation with Johnny Ds, has also created
the first area showcases featuring our up and coming young talent,
giving them a much-deserved start in the music industry.

So come on down to Johnny D's and enjoy their great food, comfortable
atmosphere and some amazingly talented performers of all ages.
Tickets are $10 and advanced reservations are strongly recommended.
VIP tickets are also available for $35. VIP tickets include a buffet
dinner, 2 drinks and preferred seating for the show. And remember,
all proceeds after nominal expenses will go directly to music programs
in our local public schools. For more information Call Johnny D's at
(617) 776-2004. Plenty of free parking is available and Red Line
access as well.

CSN is an all-ages show. Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by an
adult and must have reservations for the restaurant.

CSN is an ongoing series. For more info on artist submissions, please

Life. Support. Music. redefines the "family film."

<> In August 2004, Jason Crigler, one of New York City's most
sought-after guitarists, suffered a brain hemorrhage during a concert
in Manhattan. That night at the hospital, the doctors told Jason's
family—if he makes it through the night, there won't be much left of
him. Jason's wife, Monica, pregnant at the time, froze. "Everything
completely stopped. I forgot all about the pregnancy. I think I left
my body. I remember thinking, `This cannot be true. I cannot go on
without Jason.'"

Days passed, and Jason's family was forced to accept the new dark
reality at hand. But they refused to accept the dark future described
by doubtful doctors. So in the face of wrenching despair and
horrifying odds, the Criglers made a resolution—Jason will make a full
recovery. And thus began the long, grueling, implausible and
mystifying journey chronicled in Life. Support. Music.

In 2005 Norah Jones and friends hosted a benefit for Jason and his
family, they were able to raise $50, 000. Here's what Norah Jones has
to say about her good friend Jason Crigler: "Everyone who has ever had
the pleasure of playing with Jason will know how special he can make
it feel and sound, and what a magical cast he helps to create within
all the music he plays.
Director's Statement

I knew Jason before this tragedy struck. He wasn't one of my closest
friends, but he was one of my favorite people. Funny as hell, warm and
wise. A wildly talented musician. I was in Connecticut when I got a
call—"Jason's in the hospital. It's touch and go." My girlfriend and I
hopped on a train and a few hours later I was looking down at Jason on
a hospital bed. He looked awful. He had a hole in his skull. Tubes
everywhere. Dozens of friends were lingering in the halls. All we
could do, it seemed, was to keep hugging each other.

The filmmaking didn't begin then. No one considered it. Jason's
family was in shock. Everyone was.

It was many months later that the Criglers called me and said, "We
were going to write a book about this whole saga, but we think a
documentary might be better. Are you interested?"

Of course I was. For months, I'd been in the email loop, receiving
occasional updates about Jason's condition, Monica's pregnancy, the
surgeries, the setbacks, and all the other aching news. But these
updates, sent by the Criglers to their vast web of friends, were more
than just informational. They were illuminated by the family's intense
optimism. There was an incandescent love in these letters, in these
people. This misfortune, it seemed, had created, or uncovered,
something splendid.

That, I thought, will be the story. Amidst the heaps of suffering,
I'll focus on this beautiful and shining optimism. I'll search for the
source of the family's strength, the seed of their unwavering faith.
This will be a love story.

Of course, I underestimated the entire thing.

Eric Daniel Metzgar owns and operates Merigold Moving Pictures in
Brooklyn, New York. In 2005, Metzgar completed his first
feature-length documentary film, the critically acclaimed and
Independent Spirit Award-nominated The Chances of the World Changing,
which he directed, produced, shot and edited. The film was broadcast
nationally on POV, PBS's award-winning documentary showcase.

Life. Support. Music. is Metzgar's second film. His third directorial
effort, Reporter: On the Ground with Nick Kristof, which follows
Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof
through Africa, is currently in post-production.

Metzgar is also an award-winning cinematographer and has shot for
several Oscar-nominated directors.

SONYA KITCHELL
At Memorial Hall
Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts
April 27, 2008

"Sonya Kitchell here.

<> "I suppose I haven't sent out an email in quite some time. So, I
wanted to drop you all a line to let you know that I'll be playing at
Memorial Hall (Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts) on April 27th. If you
are in the area ... or feel like coming to a lovely small town, I
highly recommend you come on out for a good night of new music.

"This will be a very special benefit concert for the Academy at
Charlemont (my little brother's school...), not only because it's
bringing awareness to a great school, but because it's one of the only
shows I'll be playing in the States before heading off to Europe for
the summer to sing in Herbie Hancock's band.

"I hope you're all well and taking in big gulps of spring air as it
comes creeping in on us. I've been busy working away on my new
record, holed up in Kingston, New York for about a month with
producer, Malcolm Burn, Brad Barr, and Andrew Barr (of The Slip)
who'll be backing me in this show. (To clarify, The Slip will be the
back up band ... not Malcolm Burn, although he's a fantastic bass
player, but I'm afraid his playing can only be heard on records
mostly. So, get em' all!)

"Life's been really great, and I'm just holding on for the ride right
now as people like Herbie take me wonderful places and introduce me to
people I never quite thought I'd meet. I wish I could get to you all
right now and play these new songs with these great guys for everyone,
everywhere, but that'll just have to wait till the fall, and the
release of this record.

"So until then, enjoy yourselves and the warmth that is slowly but
surely coming in. And thank you ... just thank you. Thank you.
Thank you for helping me to be able to live a life I love by
supporting music."

SHOWCASE CONCERT AT THE ME & THEE COFFEEHOUSE TO END SEASON

[MARBLEHEAD] On Friday May 9, the me & thee will present Electric
Farm, John Elliott, Eve Goldberg, and The Goodhues Band as our me &
thee Showcase Concert. Join us as we close our spring season with
this quartet of acts which are in the process of building audiences
and followers in this area. The coffeehouse is located in the
Unitarian Church in Marblehead.

<> The Electric Farm is a singer-songwriter named Joey Mutis III from
Germansville, Pennsylvania. His music is intoxicating. "I was a
judge for the North East Regional Showcases and had to listen to three
songs each by 180 musicians. Joey's music, by far, was the best that
I heard!" says Kathy Sands-Boehmer from the me&thee. The Electric
Farm's music traverses the likes of Nick Drake, Ray Davies, and Neil
Young by way of Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith. The Electric Farm has
had a variety of different configurations since 1991 and Joey often
performs solo or with a bassist and saves the big band effect for
local gigs. "Over the years the band's sound has been eclectic,
ranging from poignant singer-songwriter ballads to spiraling
jazz-based tunes that wend their way through the listener's psyche."
says Rosemary Pratka, in The Morning Call.

<> Singer/songwriter John Elliott has a music project known as "the
hereafter." It has been called "post-Seinfeld, post-9/11 eyebrow rock"
and John's songwriting has garnered comparisons to Paul Simon (among
others) in the press. John grew up in Minnesota listening mostly to
Michael Jackson, Guns n' Roses and Bon Jovi (later, Bruce Springsteen
and Bob Dylan). John started to play guitar when he was ten, taught
himself to play the piano and sang in various choirs. He is now
perpetually on the road and in his Honda civic, writing songs and
playing shows. As a result of television (most notably on Grey's
Anatomy and internet exposure (and lots of touring), the hereafter has
developed a scattered and growing international following.

<> Born in the Boston area, Eve Goldberg, has called Toronto, Ontario
home since 1981. As a child, she was dragged to folk concerts
featuring artists like Doc Watson, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Arlo
Guthrie, the Watersons, and countless others. Eventually it took hold,
and as a teenager she began to devour all kinds of contemporary and
traditional roots music. She began performing in 1990, and hasn't
looked back since. Along the way she's earned the respect of legendary
musicians like Peggy Seeger, Geoff Muldaur, and Penny Lang. Warm and
inviting are two words often used to describe Eve's musical stylings
and she will bring her clear, expressive voice and solid guitar
playing to our stage. Goldberg, has performed at venues ranging from
small folk clubs to large outdoor festivals throughout Canada. She
has stepped up her touring in the U.S. since releasing her third
album, the critically acclaimed A Kinder Season, on Borealis, the
Canadian roots label.

<> The Goodhues Band from right here in the North Shore, is a
foursome, with Kim Goodhue on vocals and autoharp; Geoff Goodhue,
vocals, guitar and mandolin; Trish DeCaprio, vocals and fiddle; and
Ryan Goodhue on keyboard and hand drums. Their repertoire covers
American "roots" country, Appalachian, bluegrass, Southern gospel,
contemporary folk, traditional Celtic, and Irish "pub" songs. They
emphasize close two- and three-part harmonies, polished instrumental
arrangements, and sincere, energetic delivery. Originally a duo, with
Ohio University alums Geoff and Kim playing a lot of old timey type
songs — pre-bluegrass, mountain, brothers' duets by the Louvin
Brothers, Stanley Brothers, and others like them — along with a few
originals, some folk, parlor songs, and some Grateful Dead/Old and In
the Way material. Around March of 2006, they were joined by younger
son, Ryan, on piano and handdrums, and Trish DeCaprio on fiddle and
vocals and have been a foursome since then, with a new emphasis on
Celtic (plus all their other material).

Door charge for the me and thee Showcase concert is only $5. Tickets
are available by phone at 781-631-8987 or at www.meanthee.org.
Tickets are also available in Marblehead at both the Spirit of '76
Bookstore and Arnould Gallery. As at all me & thee coffeehouse events,
refreshments are available, including homemade pastries, coffee, and
teas. The me & thee has a handicapped-accessible entrance, is a
smoke-free environment, and is easily reached by MBTA bus. The me &
thee is the oldest continually running acoustic coffeehouse in New
England, and probably the country. The me & thee has been and will
always be a volunteer, non-profit organization sponsored by the
Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead. For information and
directions, call 781-631-8987 and check the website www.meandthee.org.

Next concert: September 19: Season opener with Jez Lowe and the Bad
Pennies from the UK

CALENDAR/PSA: Friday, May 9, The me&thee Showcase concert featuring
Electric Farm, John Elliott, Eve Goldberg, and The Goodhues Band at
the me & thee. Door charge is ONLY $5. The coffeehouse is located at
the Unitarian Universalist Church at 28 Mugford Street, Marblehead and
starts at 8:30 p.m. Call 781-631-8987 or go to www.meandthee.org for

New Dropkick Murphys Baseball Bar
KEN CASEY, PROPRIETOR

DROPKICK MURPHYS Re-open McGreevy's 3rd Base Saloon

88 YEARS AFTER PROHIBITION CLOSED ITS DOORS, NUF CED MCGREEVY'S 3RD
BASE SALOON REOPENS IN BOSTON AT 911 BOYLSTON ST.

<> Considered by many as the "Birthplace of Red Sox Nation" and
"America's 1st Sports-Bar and Baseball Museum", McGreevy's 3rd Base
Saloon is finally back after its disappearance from the Boston scene
in 1920. Back then its founder "Nuf Ced" McGreevy led his group of
rabid Red Sox fans "the Royal Rooters" in song as they led their Red
Sox to victory with the fight song "Tessie".

In 2004 "a modern day McGreevy" emerged in Ken Casey the founder of
the Boston band the Dropkick Murphys. A die-hard Sox fan, Casey and
the Murphy's revived McGreevy's spirit with a modern version of
"Tessie" that helped the Sox win their first World Championship in 86
years. And then of course after not being involved in 05 and 06
Casey's good friend Jonathan Paplebon brought the band and their song
"Shippin Up to Boston" to Fenway and another World Series title
followed in 07.

Now in 2008, Casey and the Murphys have resurrected "McGreevy's 3rd
Base Saloon" in the heart of the city of Boston. The result is an
unmatched Irish Pub and sports bar experience where any member of Red
Sox Nation can take a step back in time to see where it all began and
rub elbows with current Sox stars like Papelbon himself. Featuring an
exact replica of McGreevy's original barroom it features actual
photographs and baseball treasures that hung on the walls of the
original watering hole. Blending Boston's baseball history from the
past and present you can see ancient artifacts like the Sox 1st Fenway
World Series Trophy from 1912. The lighting fixtures that hang from
the ceiling are even made from game used bats of past and present Red
Sox stars.

McGreevy's is the place to be for great food and drink and the
ultimate place to see any sporting event. McGreevy's even features
Nuf Ced's own geat-grand neice pouring pints from behind the bar as
she follows in the footsteps of the Red Sox Nation founder.

McGreevy's original 3rd Base Saloon was known for decades as the place
to be for Red Sox players and fans, and with the revival of the
historic bar in 2008 that tradition continues where it left off in 1920.

Come join us for a special one day sneak peak on Marathon Monday (the
race goes right by us) after which we will close for a few weeks to
finish renovations followed by a May GRAND opening!

Baseball Bar," April 20, 2008.

AMERICAN BASEBALL, AS DISTINCT FROM its Anglo-American forerunner
games, got its start in New York City and nearby areas of New Jersey.
The mid-nineteenth-century music group I am currently researching,
the Alleghanians, was connected with one of baseball's most famous
founders, Alexander Joy Cartwright.

It did not take long for Bostonians to take up this new sport. One
entry in the 1872 Boston city directory reads as follows:

Base Ball Club, (Boston Nine), 18 Boylston

To me, "Boston Nine" has kind of a punk sound to it and could make a
great name for a rock band, if it isn't already taken.

simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
