BRATTLEBORO, VT, May 3 - The beat goes on. Newsletter issue 272 was
posted Saturday; and just two days later, on Monday - well before
things normally get busy around here - we had nearly enough material
already for this issue, No. 273. We are in a long, busy spell.
<> The latest mailing from The Love Dogs has a particular point of
interest. After mentioning and bemoaning club closings, it expresses
pleasure at various openings. Then as one scrolls down the Love Dogs'
events calendar, one finds new-to-them venues, as well as new
programming at more established facilities of various sorts.
The club closings are to be lamented, but there is also a definite
up-side to the ways things are shaping up and shaking up.
Let's be cheered by new club openings.
<> It is certainly our hope around here that readers of this
publication and others will spend a portion of their Economic Stimulus
rebate money on local music and at local music establishments.
Country music fans, though, have a major temptation coming up that
only has a small connection to New England. Here is an excerpt, from
one of this week's press releases, regarding a CD set that is about to
be issued:
"MAY 20
"George Jones box set / 'Hits Then 'Til Now' (Time Life)
"The first fully-comprehensive box set from the greatest country music
singer alive."
THAT ought to interest a few of our readers.
As you may know, in the 1960s George Jones and Hartford, Connecticut's
own Gene Pitney were signed to the same label and they recorded
together. I believe they were friends.
And here is a little piece of George Jones trivia. He was once part
of a package tour that also included the 1950s industrial-strength
rock 'n' roll shouter, Wanda Jackson. The band that backed up the
stars in these shows was The Crickets, better known today as Buddy
Holly and the Crickets.

CROOKED STILL
The "Still Crooked" Confession CD
"Things in Crooked Still land have been incredibly exciting. Our new
CD is completely finished! It's called 'Still Crooked' and it
features two originals, a bunch of amazing old traditionals, and songs
by Mississippi John Hurt, Ola Belle Reed and Nathan Taylor. The
record will be officially released on June 24th, but we're kicking
things off with a four-week tour overseas! The new album, along with
hot new t-shirts, WILL be available on this tour. For folks back here
in the USA, we'll be everywhere this summer! Check out our website as
dates are constantly being added to our schedule! We can't wait for
everyone to hear the new stuff!
"For the next few weeks, the members of Crooked Still will be hard at
work with other projects (including one junior thesis). Greg goes on
a CD release tour with the Deadly Gentlemen, Corey tours the UK and
Denmark with Lissa Schneckenburger, and Aoife goes on a Northeast tour
with Sometymes Why (and Ruth's baby!)"

BANJO DAN AND THE MID-NITE PLOWBOYS
"Fire in the Sugarhouse" CD
"Fire in the Sugarhouse
"Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys are delighted, overjoyed, and
ecstatically happy to announce the release of our latest CD, 'Fire in
the Sugarhouse.' It's been nearly eight years since the release of
our last studio recording, but we think you'll agree it's been worth
the wait. We've packed this disc with our trademark original songs
about Vermont, New England and more, along with great tunes from some
of our favorite songwriters. A few highlights:
v Big Al sings of life in a logging camp, bringing in the harvest, and
makin' whoopee (and syrup) in the ol' sugarhouse.
v Jon Henry leads the quartet in a wonderful old gospel number and
sings a couple fine country numbers.
v Willy gets inspired by a mournful tombstone inscription on one
number, then turns around and offers his wacky observations about the
modern world on another.
v Banjo Dan steps up to the plate for a song about his other passion
(baseball, of course), then invites the listener for a wild ride on a
hellbound train.
v And tying it all together we have the spirited work of our terrific
fiddler, Phil Bloch.
"We think you'll agree this is some of the finest new bluegrass you've
heard in a long time. OK?!? Are you with us!?! Time to order up.
All you need to do is send a check for $17 per CD to Banjo Dan, 23
Roberts Street, Montpelier, VT 05602.
"Enjoy the music – and thanks! Banjo Dan

JOHN SHELDON AND BLUESTREAK AT ROUTE 63 ROADHOUSE
SATURDAY MAY 10.
<> Another show in this sparkling reunion series with John, Pete, Joe,
Koko, and Bruce. John is in West Africa right now, playing with top
Senegalese musicians. Who knows what transcendental sounds he will
bring back - sure to be a treat.
Show starts at 9PM, Rte. 63 Roadhouse, Miller's Falls [Massachusetts]

May 10," April 26, 2008.
THE WAY I REMEMBER IT, Bluestreak was one of the best rock-era bands
to come out the western Massachusetts and southern Vermont area.
Whether or not you recall his name, John Sheldon has long been one of
the more gifted and liked New England-based popular musicians, and his
career has featured several peaks of success.

SOMETYMES WHY
Wise Why's on Tour
<> "Preparations for the Sometymes Why 'Three Girls and a Baby' tour
are well under way. Yes folks, Baby Will will join us for our
six-date northeastern run and we can't wait.
"A few weeks ago, Kristin and Aoife drove out to the humble abode for
a little retreat. We emerged two days later with six new songs and a
hot new poster (designed by Meghan Dewar of Northampton [Massachusetts]).
"The rehearsal process was amazing - the three Why's each bringing two
new(ish) songs to transform into magic. We holed up in Ruth's music
room with the usual assortment of guitars, ukes, glockenspiels,
harmonicas, and a piano. Those rehearsal MP3s will be worth millions
someday.
"This tour stops in some of our favorite cities, including current and
former hometowns, and some amazing double bills. We are especially
looking forward to our New York City show, where we'll play after Kris
Delmhorst and before Chris Thile. Don't miss these shows!"

ABOUT THIS WEEK'S PRESS RELEASES, ETC.
<> Among the press releases and somewhat similar mailings we are
posting toward the end is a press release, which we think will
interest many of our readers, from the
- - BEAT CAMARO
team. I had not heard a thing from the band in ages, but apparently
things are revved up in the Beat Camaro camp, in part because of
exposure of their music to fans of the Harmonix computerized game,
"Guitar Hero" (specifically "Guitar Hero 2" I think). Why not scroll
on down and see for yourself.
It would not be my first guess that a lot of our readers would drop
what they are doing and apply to become a member of the
- - BOSTON BABYDOLLS.
But this is kind of an interesting troupe made up of some really
enthusiastic individuals. So we are posting below a press release
about - if I remember right - a paying gig with the Boston Babydolls.
I have never caught a
- - JOSH RITTER
show, though he is great on the Signature Sounds 10th anniversary DVD.
But the press release-length announcement of his summertime
appearance with the Boston Pops, which is posted below, notes the
guest appearance of someone I - HAVE - heard, Robert Pinsky, United
States Poet Laureate (1997-2000). Pinsky is a highly entertaining
speaker who once had a gig in this area at a Marlboro College
commencement. The person in front of me had a video camera and I saw
a portion of the proceedings through its viewer ... but at a distance,
with near-sighted eyes, and at a peculiar angle. So I know as well as
anyone what former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky would look like
reflected in fun-house mirrors and in surrealistic colors. This
surreal, fun-house guy spoke on the topic of what we most want in
life, and he presented an intriguing point of view. Pinsky may be
worth the price of admission all on his own, if he's on stage long
enough and left to his own devices, but you'd also get Josh Ritter and
the Boston Pops with this deal.

AS HAS BEEN THE CASE pretty nearly all year, we have more news
e-mails than we have time to excerpt and compile them. Maybe if they
are still timely I can run passages from some of them next issue.
Two final things.
First, I just barely had time to copy this subject line from the
account where we receive news e-mails:
A New Twist On A Classic Fairy Tale! CINDERELLA This Morning at
10:30am--"Family...
GIVING A NEW TWIST to the classic Cinderella tale is a longstanding
tradition in Boston. I am aware of a lavish burlesque of Cinderella
that was presented in the 1840s at a long-running establishment called
the Boston Museum.
Second, the ol' NEMS computer just passed an EXTREMELY important test.
We had two things go wrong at once, the combination of which easily
could have shut down this operation totally. Much relief is now being
felt throughout the spacious and well-appointed New England Music
Scrapbook Newsletter International Headquarters Compound.
We live to rock another day!

THREE DAY THRESHOLD
The Patriots Game
<> Here is an e-mail subject line of a sort we do not expect to see often:
- - Help a 3DT dad get elected to the Patriots
- - Hall of Fame!
3DT, as many of you may already know, is short for the name of an
outstanding Boston stringband with a punk-rock soul - or is it a
punk-rock band with a stringband soul? - the soulful Three Day Threshold.
"[W]e are happy to announce part of the Three Day Threshold family,
Jon Morris (father of former 3DT drummer, Jack Morris), got nominated
for the New England Patriots Hall of Fame. This legendary center is
up against Ben Coates and Jim Nance. [Tough competition - Ed.] Go to

to vote. It's on the front page of the Patriot's web site and whether
he gets in or not will be determined by fan voting, so please help him

THE STATE OF THE ECONOMY
<> It is my personal opinion that journalism is being practiced quite
poorly altogether too often these days and that, as citizens and as
people who are interested in what is going on around us, we ought to
be very concerned. Evidently reporters and editors are going on a
belief, for instance, that, though economic news has been mixed,
stories about how bad the economy is are of greater
reader/listener/viewer interest. Not long ago, Yahoo News linked to a
news article by way of this.
Yahoo News Headline, Thursday Afternoon, April 17:
- - Leading economic indicators rise
- - after 5 months of declines (AP)
While much bad-news reporting has remained among Yahoo News' top
stories for more than a day - sometimes several days - this good-news
story was gone from the top picks so fast I almost didn't get to copy
the headline.
I don't know in whose interest it is for the media to receive mixed
economic news but then to emphasize the negative in their reports, but
the practice is certainly not in our interest. This, anyway, is my
belief.
One may hope that the news story behind the following Yahoo News
headline, which is running right now (Friday afternoon, May 2), will
be the start toward more balanced, less sensational reporting:
- - Employers cut fewer jobs in April,
- - jobless rate falls (AP)
Or maybe the report behind the following headline, which is running
this (Saturday) morning, can help get journalists back on track:
- - Economy shows resilience; jobless rate
- - falls as dollar rises

tons of vocals and revamped our set list to bring you the best of the

BOSTON BABYDOLLS PRESS RELEASE
We're Hiring.
April 26, 2008
<> The Boston Babydolls, New England's leading burlesque troupe, have
an opening for one or two burlesque dancers to join the troupe on a
permanent basis. If you're interested - or know someone who might be -
please read on...
So you want to be a Boston Babydoll?
Great! We're always looking for talented burlesque dancers, variety
performers, and assistants (for things like merchandising, costuming,
hair/makeup, etc.)
What's it like to be a Boston Babydoll?
Well, first it's fun and glamorous. But it's also a lot of hard work.
It's a part-time job and a full-time commitment. Expect the following
time commitment:
* Weekly troupe rehearsals (usually 2 hours in the evening)
* Additional rehearsals for group numbers or big upcoming shows
* Practice on-your-own at least three times a week
* 2-3 shows or appearances a month (usually evenings)
* Promotion (online or flyers) of classes, shows, and the troupe
* Costuming (usually on your own, sometimes group "sweat shops")
* Photo shoots (usually 3-4 a year)
* Regular ongoing communication via email
It's a serious time commitment to be a Boston Babydoll. If you want to
be a Boston Babydoll but don't have the time right now, no worries! We
have lots of other ways to be involved. See "Friends of the Boston
Babydolls" below.
What does it take to be a Boston Babydoll?
Dance ability, burlesque experience, the "right look and style," and a
whole lot of personality.
Dance ability: All of The Boston Babydolls have some form of dance
background (tap, ballet, jazz, belly, etc.). Burlesque dancing is not
like club dancing. Dances are choreographed and incorporate
traditional burlesque moves (bumps, grinds, and shimmies) as well as
dance movements of the 1920s to 1940s (Charlestons, swing, etc.). If
you know how to move and have some dance background, we can teach you
some of the Boston Babydoll-esque movements.
Burlesque experience: While The Boston Babydolls occasionally use
go-go dancers and other "straight" dance numbers, we are a burlesque
troupe. Our dancers perform burlesque. This means knowing and owning
the art of the striptease. If burlesque is new to you, The Boston
Babydolls has a regular class, Instant Burlesque Queen, where you can
learn the art of the striptease. It's far easier to teach dancers how
to striptease than strippers how to dance. We also have a Boston
Babydoll apprenticeship program for potential Boston Babydolls to
learn the ins and outs of burlesque. See "Apprenticeship program" below.
The right look and style: The Boston Babydolls pay homage to the
burlesque scene of old vaudeville. This means that everything we do -
music choice, costuming, dance style, make up, etc. - fits the genre
of the 1920s to 1940s. Boston Babydolls look and act the part of this
era. If what you want to do is horror burlesque or dance to current
pop songs, there are other troupes in the area that do this style of
burlesque. This is not what The Boston Babydolls do.
Personality: Burlesque dancing is just like dating - people might
immediately notice your looks and body, but ultimately, if you don't
have personality, they loose interest. Part of the job of a Boston
Babydoll is public relations - this means mingling with the crowd,
posing for pictures, signing autographs, etc. Sometimes we have gigs
that are strictly "appearances" and no performing. This means you must
be comfortable talking to strangers and putting yourself out there. In
addition, each of The Boston Babydolls has their own distinct persona
which dictates music and costuming choices (and often a burlesque
queen's signature - her stage name).
Do I get paid?
Yes. At a minimum, burlesque dancers get paid for each number they
perform. Some shows pay more than others - it depends on the venue.
Occasionally, The Boston Babydolls will perform gratis for charity events.
Do I get naked?
No. The Boston Babydolls perform burlesque, this means striptease not
stripping. The least amount of clothing a Boston Babydoll burlesque
dancer will strip down to is pasties (nipple covers) and panties.
However, if you are uncomfortable with stripping to pasties and
panties, burlesque might not be for you. If you're not sure, we have
an Instant Burlesque Queen class where you can test yourself to find
out what you are comfortable with.
What's a "Friend of The Boston Babydolls"?
While our burlesque dancers are the heart and soul of The Boston
Babydolls, we couldn't do any of it without a cadre of people to help
us including crew (stage hands, stage kittens/pick-up artists, etc.),
security, promo and merchandising, and even costuming, hair and
makeup. If you love burlesque and want to be involved (but not strip),
love theater and miss doing tech work, or even if you just want to
come to a show and can't afford to buy a ticket, then you would be a
great Friend of The Boston Babydolls. We have lots of shows and are
always looking for volunteers to help us out. We're also on the look
out for variety performers (singers, jugglers, spinners, hula hoopers,
contortionists, etc.)
What's the Boston Babydoll Apprenticeship program?
In a nutshell, here's the deal: we make a three month commitment to
each other. In that time, we teach you about burlesque dance, hair and
make-up, costuming, and we develop your burlesque persona and role
within The Boston Babydolls. We also teach you some choreographies and
generally get you ready to be part of the troupe.
In exchange, you help us at shows (by being a stage kitten or minding
the merchandise booth, etc.), you're part of the street team
(promoting shows), and you practice what we teach you. At the end of
90 days, we look at each other and you decide if this is something you
want to pursue seriously, and we decide whether you're ready to be a
full member of the troupe.
So how can I be a Boston Babydoll?
Fill out the form below, send it to us, and we'll be in touch. If we
think you're a good match, we'll ask you to audition for us. This
means performing a burlesque number for your audition.

comparable spot on a printed copy. Just a thought. - Ed.]

<> If you have friends who would be interested in any of the items in
this issue, please forward this newsletter to them. Thanks! We
believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.
.
<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
.
... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or
location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise
confirming details.
