BRATTLEBORO, VT, May 17 - 2008 is turning out to be one exciting year
around New England's popular music circuit. Week after week has been
close to our all-time busiest. We understand that not everything is
up. In 2007, concert bookings seemed to slow - quite substantially in
some locales - and it is not at all clear, to me at least, that
bookings have returned to their former brisk pace. But clearly many
grassroots artists are making and selling a lot of recordings, putting
together tours - around the region, across this country, and overseas
- and generally finding ways to get their music out to fans. Rock and
be happy...

NOW PLAYING ON THE NEMS STEREO

HUNGRYTOWN (Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson)
"Hungrytown" CD

<> "Hungrytown" is among the CDs I most wanted to hear back around New
Year's, but factors conspired against it.

"Hungrytown" is easily the best album by Rebecca Hall and Ken
Anderson. First, it must be said that these two have found a way to
be so retro that they make normal retro seem as recent as tomorrow.
Ken Anderson's look, in publicity photos, is such that he could step
onto an early 1960s television set and instantly fit in. Maybe he
would be a comedy writer who doubles as on-air talent. Second, this
is the duo's best production by far. "Hungrytown" is strong from
start to finish, a thing that cannot be truthfully said of many
contemporary full-length albums. Third, Hall and Anderson are
building on a great strength of their earlier work. Rebecca Hall has
a creamy voice that would be perfectly at home in a 1960s soft-rock
group, yet she applies a steady mellow tunefulness to a good variety
of traditional songs and old-time-oriented originals which often
feature moments of darkness and mystery. This duo's edge is buttered
on both sides.

"Hungrytown" is an album that would be welcome on the stereo here anytime.
.

IT IS OF MORE THAN A LITTLE personal interest that two of the very
finest recent albums of vocal folk music have been issued by artists
based in my own sector of New England: southern Vermont's Hungrytown
and Lissa Schneckenburger. Maybe we can set up a Windham County, VT
battle of the folk bands.
.

PATTY LARKIN
"Watch the Sky" CD

<> I imagine this album's title is all tied up with lyrics on the
third track, "Hallelujah, I'm falling for you" (though the title
actually comes from elsewhere on the disc.) If we could catch a
glimpse of someone skydiving, the diver might seem quiet and peaceful
while moving with tremendous force.

The only copy of "Watch the Sky" I have seen is the promo version sent
to us. So I don't know what everyone else is seeing. But Larkin has
never looked better, to my experience, than she does in the
promotional booklet that accompanied this disc.

Larkin has never sounded better, either. "Watch the Sky" has just the
right amount of production. It draws from a wide variety of popular
music styles without the least hint of losing its focus. This is an
ideal that Amy Fairchild once addressed intriguingly in one of her fan
mailings, and Larkin's "Watch the Sky" captures the ideal's essence.
Larkin might do the same on her next album and still come out with a
very different sound.

The music on "Watch the Sky" averages out a little slow, and
performer/producer Larkin pulls it off with uncommon skill and
success. The music of "Watch the Sky" ranges from the "beat" sound of
Peter Mulvey's classic album, "The Trouble With Poets" - only smoother
- to folk coffeehouse loveliness.

Larkin's prior album had a lot to like, and "Watch the Sky" is far
better. The only reason for a Patty Larkin fan to not want to buy
this CD might be that they already own it.
.

CHRIS VALLILO
"Abraham Lincoln in Song"

<> Probably not a lot needs to be said about Chris Vallilo's "Abraham
Lincoln in Song." It is a folk album of music that is easy on the
ears with songs that all, in one way or another, connect with Abraham
Lincoln, arguably our greatest president ever. The interest of
Americans in Lincoln and the United States Civil War is simply vast.
So probably the great majority of people who will want this album will
want it first and foremost because of its subject matter.

As it turns out, right now I am personally reading a biography for
children - "Good Brother, Bad Brother" by James Cross Giblin - about
Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, and the assassin's brother, the
extraordinary American actor Edwin Booth. If you have to guess which
brother is good and which is bad, you flunk American History 275.

The Civil War is the hottest topic in all of American history, and
more has been published in the USA about President Lincoln than about
anyone else except Jesus.

Popular music of the mid-nineteenth century United States must be
incredibly hard to do since, in my highly seasoned view, most
performers would have to improve radically to rise to so-so status.
Most recreations I have heard have been truly horrid. So to say that
Vallilo does this music quite well, throughout a highly listenable
album, is practically to heap praise on him to unbelievable levels.

For the few Americans who are totally uninformed in Lincoln lore, it
might be hard to understand what some of these songs have to do with
our sixteenth president. But actually, the material on "Abraham
Lincoln in Song" is wonderfully apt. Lots of listeners will not need
to be told how nineteenth-century popular songs such as "Aura Lee" and
"Dixie's Land" fit in.

Much could be written that most Americans don't need to read. Suffice
it to say, then, that "Abraham Lincoln in Song" is a fine album that
belongs in any collection of Lincoln matter.

So, instead, I'll just turn to one of my personal favorite niches of
Lincoln's biography. Abraham Lincoln is the only president I can name
- and, I imagine, the only president there has been - who, in wartime,
personally went behind enemy lines. Isn't that the most amazing
thing? When I first read that Abraham Lincoln and a small group of
his associates went behind Confederate lines, I couldn't believe my
eyes. It's not like, once spotted, he would have been hard to recognize.

DENNIS BRENNAN
"Engagement" CD

<> Returning to the Scene of the Crime, last thing Saturday morning we
gave a return listen to the great "Engagement" album by the great
Dennis Brennan.

Don't call this stuff classic rock ... call it a set of Rock Classics.

If there was ever any doubt, a repeat playing of this album shows why
"Engagement" put a great big new kick in Dennis Brennan's career.

At this time of day, giving "Engagement" the stereo volume it deserves
would get me evicted. But I do believe that cranking this disc
normally would be the way to go. The best way to enjoy "Engagement"
is likely to play it loud and often.
.

<> WE HAVE LOTS MORE E-MAILED NEWS from this week and more still left
over from last week. But I am fast running out of time and my
Internet connection is experiencing unanticipated stalling, so the
handwriting is on the wall that now is the time to get this issue
mailed. Next time I will try to use as many as possible of those
things that did not get into the present issue. What follows is a
little reminiscence of the week that was.
.

THE DROPKICK MURPHYS AND McGREEVY'S

<> We experienced a wave of Murphys-mania, following the last regular
issue of this newsletter. At the time I am writing this part of the
present letter, every one of the responses we have received, so far,
to our last issue has been about the Dropkick Murphys' new McGreevy's
3rd Base Saloon, a late, late, really late revival of an establishment
that flourished a century ago. Only one of these e-mails about
McGreevy's so much as even touched on any other topic. McGreevy's and
the Murphys, by and large, are the subjects our readers wanted to address.

All of the incoming McGreevy's messages were positive, each in its own
way.

Except for one.

These e-mails ranged from excited, to curious, to informative (and
much appreciated), with several other levels of interest represented.

One lone reader was indignant that I posted the DKM press release and
thus, in his view, strayed from "the music subject." It is a long
story which would interest few if any of our readers; but I will just
say that this fellow has been with us for years, I have diverged from
"the music subject" frequently through those same years, and this is
the first objection to the practice I recall getting from the guy. He
has written often enough about other matters.

This newsletter always has dealt with topics in addition to music, and
it will continue to do so. Nonetheless, to my way of thinking, the
DKM McGreevy's Saloon press release has quite enough to do with music.
Ken Casey, the McGreevy's proprietor, is a key player in the Dropkick
Murphys, one of New England's most popular rock bands. Fans of DKM's
music will gather at McGreevy's.

Does McGreevy's have a sound system? Will they be playing recorded
music? Live music? Will there be a jukebox? Will bartenders whistle
"Tessie"? I imagine there will be a "Yes" answer to at least one of
these questions.

The very first item in the very first issue of this newsletter
concerned The Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island. It was no more
about music than the DKM McGreevy's press release. That first item
was hardly about the band, Great White, which was featured the night
of the fire. But word of The Station nightclub disaster was
important, and I was certain then, and remain certain now, that it
would interest our readers.

It has been an eventful time for us, too, since McGreevy's opened.

THE PRECINCT (Formerly Toast)
A Grand Grand Opening

Last night, David Johnston had the honor of opening a new Boston-area
venue, The Precinct (formerly Toast), at 70 Union Square, next to The
Independent. He was followed by Chris Cote and a remarkably
familiar-looking band made up of Duke Levine, Kevin Barry, Marty
Ballou, and Lorne Entres.

My current e-friend and future one-on-one hockey opponent, Maria

sent the new club's home page address, which is

MM says the plan is for live music nightly out back, with sports in
the front.

THE GREAT BANDINI
At T.T. the Bear's Place
Saturday, May 17

The group, The Great Bandini, separates itself from other bandini
bands by being Great. And The Great Bandini separates itself from
Boston by having no more area engagements for some time. Except for
tonight...

"Hey all, this Saturday will be the last 'The Great Bandini' show in
Boston for a while. With our unexpected advancement in the Rumble, we
may have flooded the market a bit. No one is more aware of this than
the Bandini, particularly Barlow and Chris, who have logged many miles
coming up from Brooklyn on the fung wah bus, risking their lives each
time they boarded.

"Nonetheless, we are committed to setting TT the Bear's stage ablaze
with our unique blend of 'rock' and 'roll.' Those of you lucky enough
to survive our face-melting set at the Abbey recently have hopefully
recovered enough to do it all over again. To those of you who have
not seen any of the recent gigs ... what in the hell are you waiting
for? ANSWER ME. No, don't, I'm not ready to hear it. But if you
were thinking, 'I was waiting for the last possible moment,' well
then, very clever, and here it is.

"Consult your physician and bring some zinc oxide:

THE LOVE DOGS
Barking Up the Right Tree

One thing that made the May mailing of the doggedly-in-love Love Dogs
great was the listing of several new venues this outfit sniffed out
for May 2008 bookings.

One of these ought to be of particular interest to our southern New
Hampshire, southeastern Vermont, and north-sort-of-western
Massachusetts readers. Here it is:

Sat 5/24 **NEW VENUE**
The Love Dogs' Quartet with special Guest "Lonely Gus" Carlson
at The Chase Tavern
Keene, New Hampshire
603 357-7070
http://murphysblues.com/EFLane.htm

<> "Some of the same folks who made the Rynborn a great
live music room have come together to present live
music at this cool new club in the E.F. Lane Hotel. It'll be the
small but powerful quartet version of the band featuring Mario Perrett
on sax, and the
incredible guitar playing and humor of Lonely Gus - a
must see show!"

SOURCE: The Love Dogs, "Love Dogs in May," April 30, 2008.

WHILE WE ARE AT IT, here are a couple more event listings from the
same Love Dogs mailing:

MARK ERELLI
Looking Ahead to a Couple Big Weeks

SINGER-SONGWRITER-SCIENTIST Mark Erelli has at least four big shows
coming up in the next couple weeks or so. Here is some information
about the first of them.

"Saturday, May 24th
Guthrie Center
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
8 pm

"I have been wanting to play this room for awhile, and they finally
were able to slip me into the mix with a last-minute opening on their
schedule. This venue is in the church from Arlo Guthrie's song,
'Alice's Restaurant!' How cool is that? This will be a solo show to
kick off the summer season in the Berkshires, and I'm looking forward
to it. Maybe I'll even wear white. For more info, visit

RIRA (club)
Burlington, Vermont

<> Kier Byrnes of Boston's

seems to be a first-rate fellow. He sent the following details for an
upcoming 3DT booking:

. . . May 24, 2008, 9:00P
. . . Rira
. . . Burlington, Vermont

I drew a total blank on the club, Rira. Kier says he believes the
name comes from a Gaelic word for laughter. This Rira, he says, is a
"cool little pub" in the downtown of what we Vermonters know as our
metropolis, Burlington.

Three Day Threshold makes great music, and Rira sounds to be an
equally great place to catch it.

LATE NIGHT RADIO

12-STRING GUITARS
A Query

<> Do we have any 12-string guitarists out there? If so, could one of
you suggest what a newcomer to the 12-string, who has a limited
budget, ought to be looking for in an instrument, new or used? The
person who made this query has some background playing a 6-string
guitar. I don't know his exact budget; but, if he buys a 12-string,
he is not going to be spending more than a few hundred dollars.

He has heard, among other things, that 12-string guitars are not
necessarily very durable. I remember looking into a vintage and very
expensive 12-string once, and the amount of bracing inside was remarkable.

If you can offer tips, please e-mail them to us by way of the
following Web page:

NEW CDs AND REISSUES
Listed on Monday of This Week
by Newbury Comics

<> The latest Newbury Comics list of new releases is quite
interesting. First, it includes the following by one of Rhode
Island's finest:

ROBILLARD, DUKE-Swinging Session With Duke-$11.88

The live recording of the Rev. Gary Davis at Newport is also listed.
In the 1960s, a lot of folkies and some of the edgier folk-rockers
were favorably influenced by Rev. Davis.

The most notable thing, though, on the Newbury Comics list has to be
the large number of reissues of titles by The Band. Though we have
not received an announcement, it seems like a safe guess that these
reissues are in honor of the 40th anniversary of the release of The
Band's "Music From Big Pink."

Over the years, I have followed many artists whose music was HEAVILY
indebted to The Band. I wouldn't be surprised if you have, too.
.

CHUCK McDERMOTT AND WHEATSTRAW,
TINA WELCH
LIZ BOARDO
JEANNE FRENCH
DIDI STEWART
on Vinyl

<> Some may recall that we received an inquiry not long ago for John
Lincoln Wright recordings. In my response to our correspondent, I
noted that Gemm.com was then listing vinyl releases by another
Cambridge, Massachusetts country band, Chuck McDermott and Wheatstraw.
Soon thereafter, I found that all Chuck McDermott records at Gemm.com
were sold out. THAT was fast. So, I am posting this to let anyone
who is interested know that two sellers currently have Gemm.com
listings for the "Follow the Music" LP. One gives the album a
five-star rating. The other gives it just one star. Go figure.

<> Gemm.com also has two Tina Welch singles, both of which are
different from mine.

"When You Gonna Take Me Home (To Meet Your Momma)" appears on both
sides of one single.

"Keep an Eye Out for Charlie" has a song on the other side that I have
never heard, as far as I recall: "I Don't Need Your Everyday Love."

<> Much to my surprise, in addition to a familiar single on the
Belmont Records label, Gemm.com also lists a CD by Liz Boardo. One of
the two sellers seems to date the disc to early 2007. There had been
talk of Liz getting back into performing, so the CD could be by the
ex-Bostonian Liz Boardo many of us know about.

<> Skipping genres a bit, I discovered that Gemm.com lists copies of
the major label LPs by Jeanne French and Didi Stewart. I always
associate those albums with one another because I bought them at about
the same time.

Enough for my Gemm.com searches for now. One or more of these may be
of interest to some of our readers.

[Well, this item at least STARTED as a brief.]

ERIN McKEOWN
Keeping Track of Recorded Tracks

<> "This June, McKeown will begin work on a new album of original
songs. For those keeping track, this ... will be the first record of
all new material since 2005's 'We Will Become Like Birds.' Joining
McKeown on the project will be producer and long-time musical
compatriot Sam Kassirer.

"Erin and Sam will be working at Sam's Great North Recording Society

THE WEISSTRONAUTS
Whether on Tour or Naut
These Weisstros Instro-tain!

<> "Hey! The new Weisstronauts CD, 'Instro-tainment!' is now
available for purchase at:

http://www.weissy.com/buystuff/

"True! 'Instro-tainment' looks to be our masterverk, if we do say so
ourselves. Sessions at Verdant Studio in rural Vermont went
swimmingly. A broader-than-ever sonic palette was employed (fake
strings? Moog synth? pseudo-operatic famale vocals? Yes yes yes.) Yet
the band's trademark triple lead guitar assault remains its anchor.
Song highlights include the bossa nova 'Caixa Dos Moluscos,' the
Eastern European-flavored gem 'Seven X's,' the party-themed 'Get It
Together,' the epic farewell to the surf genre 'Surf's Down,' and the
farm-rock exercise 'Chicky.' Part-time 'Nauts road bassist Doug Yule
(ex-Velvet Underground) made it to the sessions and contributed bass
and fiddle on a few of the new tunes, including a spontaneous
stomp-a-billy version of the Velvets' classic, 'What Goes On.'

"'If there's such a thing as a forward-thinking surf band, Boston's
Weisstronauts are it. Avoiding the purism that makes so many
instrumental retro-fetishists seem redundant, The Weisstronauts
combine vintage surf and Nashville chicken-pickin' with cartoon
zaniness and spaghetti Western intrigue. They often recall NRBQ's
offbeat musical humor as much as Link Wray's reverb-drenched Tarantino
fodder.'

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
.

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or
location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise
confirming details.
