BRATTLEBORO, VT, June 7 - Yahoo, as noted last newsletter issue, is
making highly destructive changes to what it calls Yahoo Mail Classic,
amounting to a major reduction in service.
For over five years, I have compiled each and every issue of this
newsletter in e-mail drafts in the e-mail account attached to this
Yahoo group, URIDFM. Until last week, Yahoo Mail allowed users to
revise a draft and save it, while keeping the old copy of the draft as
an important backup.
Until last week, Yahoo Mail also allowed its customers to send a draft
as an e-mail, while keeping the old draft for re-use. This is an
essential feature, for instance, when conducting interviews by e-mail.
The new version of Yahoo Mail Classic allows for no such uses of
e-mail drafts.
Yahoo Mail is now basically imitating GMail drafts, and GMail drafts
have always been totally useless for my purposes. And anyway, when
offered a pale imitation, why not go with the original.
The new version of Yahoo Mail Classic is also much more difficult in
most other regards. For example, the copy and paste function - one of
the single most basic computer operations - is now often a nightmare,
when, for instance, one attempts to copy and paste more than a simple,
short passage from a modern, more complexly organized newsletter or
other news mailing.
It is not as though Yahoo has created only one new problem for us to
deal with. The new troubles are plentiful.
It is my personal opinion that Yahoo Mail management has made a grave
error and that the marketplace is going to punish them severely for
dismantling what was once the best free Web-based e-mail service.
This strikes me as a terribly strange time in Yahoo's corporate
history to make such an ill-considered and reckless move.
I have looked around and asked around for another online service I
could use for compiling our newsletter issues, and I have never found
even so much as one possible alternative to the old Yahoo Mail drafts.
I have even run queries in past newsletters, without specifically
saying why I was asking; and not one of these queries has brought in
as much as a single relevant reply.
This week I have been quite busy checking out various free Web-based
e-mail services, in a so-far vain attempt to find a suitable
replacement for the old Yahoo Mail. In my view, both GMail and
Hotmail Classic are a good deal better than the new version of Yahoo
Mail Classic, but not in ways that help us much.
I use public-access computers part of the time, so I am often among a
small crowd of computer users. In that context, I have seen eight
Yahoo Mail Classic accounts, seven of which have now been totally
decimated by Yahoo. Strange to say, of those eight e-mail accounts,
this account, URIDFM, is now the only one that is fully functional in
the form of old-style Yahoo Mail Classic.
To the best of my knowledge - and I am quite certain this is so - it
is just a matter of time before Yahoo does to this account what it has
done to the others.
My effort to find a service similar to old-style Yahoo Mail drafts is
ongoing, though this is not to say I am optimistic. It only means I
have not given up ... yet.
My effort to persuade Yahoo to restore the old Yahoo Mail Classic also
has not ended ... yet.
There is no way of telling what happens next. We will see.
The one thing I - DO - know for sure is that I will at least attempt
to compile NEMS newsletter Issue 279, using whatever online resources
are available to me at the time. There is no need to depend too very
heavily on theory in a case such as this, so we will try the practical
experience route.
Maybe there will be an Issue 279 in your inboxes next week and maybe
there won't.
Right now, I just don't know.
.
THIS WEEK'S PRESS RELEASES
Actually, I do not recall receiving any apropos press releases this
week, though we did get our share of releases about artists based in
other regions and about national and international acts. But...
<> At the bottom of this newsletter issue, I am posting the latest fan
mailing from The Drunk Stuntmen out of western Mass., complete down to
the top of the band's then-current event's calendar. The DSM mailing
rambles and gets a little murky in spots, but the basic idea seems to
be that the band is having trouble getting its new record in stores
and the guys need help from StuntFans everywhere.
There are a lot of StuntFans out there, though they seem to be
dispersed quite a bit, mostly through the eastern United States.
<> As noted elsewhere in this newsletter, I am also posting the latest
explanation by Session Americana of the band's prior mailing.

SARAH BORGES AND THE BROKEN SINGLES
Tidbits From the Latest Newsletter
Including Northeast Tour Stops and a
Tantalizing Reference to a New Record
<> "We've just come back from a tour of Germany and the U.K., both of
which were a blast, and we want to share our experiences with you.
One of the high points was playing at the legendary Cavern Club in
Liverpool where the Beatles got their start. One of the low points
was getting stuck in traffic on the Autobahn at a standstill for two
and a half hours and almost missing our show in Berlin."
Here are the Northeast bookings, as supplied to us in this Broken
Singles mailing:
6/7/2008 Bellows Falls, VT - Roots on the River
6/13/2008 Great Barrington, MA - Club Helsinki
6/14/2008 Fall River, MA - Narrows Center
. . . . .
6/26/2008 Pittsburgh, PA - Thunderbird Cafe
. . . . .
7/27/2008 Little Compton, RI - Sakonnet Rhythm and Blues Festival
8/1/2008 Natick, MA - Rock in the Common
I think I may have inadvertently deleted a Philadelphia show listing
and included the Pittsburgh entry by mistake. If so, sorry.
"Me and the band are setting our sights on a new record. We've
already begun playing some new songs in the live set, but we're always
working on new stuff, and hope to start recording later in the summer.
No release date yet, but rest assured that the new record will be on
its way to you ASAP!"

NEW RELEASES NOTED BY NEWBURY COMICS
Record releases are out this week, we are told, by Solomon Burke,
Jakob Dylan, Heart, Elton John, Aimee Mann, John Mayall, Sam Phillips,
the Pretenders, Radiohead, the Traveling Wilburys, Weezer, and that
perennial superstar act, the mighty Various Artists.
The above list is heavy on long-established acts, but what are ya
gonna do: I haven't even heard of most of the other artists and
wouldn't have a clue which to name and which to skip over. Well, I
have some idea, don't I, as to which to skip over: all of them.
DISTURBED-Indestructible-$12.88
DISTURBED-Indestructible (CD/DVD)-$24.99
<> "Indestructible" by Disturbed seems to be the record getting the
greatest promotional push, possibly making this release's chances
indestructible.
OPETH-Watershed (CD/DVD)-$19.99
OPETH-Watershed-$13.88
<> Opeth was described to us as a "metal-that's-not-metal sort of
band" - a group that is pretty good and evidently quite worth a listen.

SESSION AMERICANA

The Classic Session Americana Hard-Sell
When Session Americana members pitch one of the band's shows, they
really light a fire under fans, as you will clearly see by the following:
"Due to lack of interest, Session Americana will be playing only one
show this Saturday at Club Passim in Harvard Sq. The show is at 7PM,
so there will be plenty of time for drinking after the show. Plenty
of tickets left at
http://www.clubpassim.com/
"This is basically our last local show until October, and with our
dwindling popularity, personal issues, and disappointing critical
response, we could use the support. It will be hot, uncomfortable,
quiet, and sober, but we need you."

See what I mean?
<> NOTE ADDED IN THE LATE GOING: Evidently not everyone who received
this Session Americana mailing took it in the same spirit I did. Down
at the bottom of the main text of this issue of our newsletter is
Session Americana's explanation of the group's original June 7
message. To see the Session Americana revisionist announcement of
SA's Club Passim show, scroll way down and look for a section headed,
"Session Americana Explained."
For my own part, I have never heard a note of Session Americana's
music, though I am familiar with the work of individual members and
have heard these musicians singing and playing together in various
other combinations. But it seems to me, from subscribing to the SA
mailing list for a few years and swapping an occasional e-mail with
one band member or another, that this group has a certain charm that
is reflected in the original SA e-mail, which has subsequently been
explained. I like what I know of Session Americana (the lineage of
this group is impressive, to say the least) and can only imagine that
it must have been newcomers to the SA mailing list who were concerned
for the band after the first missive. The original mailing, as I
recall, was credited to Session Americana's Ry Cavanaugh who, it seems
to me, has always had a downbeat way of being upbeat, and he is a
positive example of the charm I mentioned earlier.

Well do I remember buying a 10" EP by The Memphis Rockabilly Band,
picking up great singles by The Boston Rockabilly Music Conspiracy
(BRMC), and waiting for Jack Smith and the Rockabilly Planet to come
out on CD. Rockabilly was hot in Boston and Providence in those days,

PETE KENNEDY
"Guitarslinger" CD Newly Released
"Pete Kennedy's new CD, 'Guitarslinger,' just out!
<> "Pete Kennedy's new release, 'Guitarslinger,' is his first solo
project since 1992, a gap of sixteen years. Taking a different
direction from the jangly 12-string lush harmonies of the Kennedys'
acclaimed string of CDs, the new album is a stripped down, mostly
acoustic project that focuses on his incendiary solo guitar work.
Longtime DC fans will recognize '19 in Vietnam,' recast here on a
haunting electric sitar, and 'Eldorado,' a favorite from Pete's band
Bound For Glory. The rest of the tunes grew out of his solo tour of
the south, earlier this year, with a few tributes tossed in: Chuck
Berry's 'You Can't Catch Me,' Nat King Cole's 'Nature Boy,' and Pete's
arrangement of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue.' Maura joins in on a
raucous version of 'Not Fade Away,' previously only available to fan
club members. There are also two jaw-dropping nods to the great Les
Paul, with Pete recreating Les' patented tape speed manipulations, but
in real time! In many ways, the album is an homage to the heyday of
the roots music scene in DC, when guitar giants like Roy Buchanon and
Danny Gatton were stalking the local clubs. Guitarslinger? Sure.
That's the tradition Pete grew up in, and with this long-awaited solo
CD, he shows 'em how it's done."

DRUNK STUNTMEN
Latest Mailing
Hiya Kids -
<> To all of the members of the Stunt Nation who have supported us
during the course of the last fifteen years...
You saw us at Butterfield Dorm when we were so young we were still
trying to figure which end of the razor to use. We cooked your eggs,
took your orders and washed your dishes at the Iron Horse. We did the
same at Cha Cha Cha. We stir fried your Pad Thai and Green Curry
noodles with seitan and extra peanuts at Amber Waves. We played for
you at your company picnic, your wedding, your birthday. We rocked
you at Kendrick Place, The Red Barn, Katrina's, The Iron Horse. Then
we started to branch out. You saw us on the East Coast and the West
Coast and points in between. You saw us up north in the White
Mountains, down South in Key West, Daytona Beach, Puckett's Farm
Equipment, Sadlacks. Chapel Hill, at the Florabama on the Florida
panhandle. Some of you saw us in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, not New
York. You come back time and time again to see us at the Narrows, The
Rodeo Bar, Bourne Scenic Park, and of course Oktoberfest at the Hyland
Brewery.
You got into a bidding war over purchasing Bow Bow's bass. We saw
Phish and Willie Nelson, with you. We even took in a Red Sox game or
two. You supported us through four albums. You even saw some of us
on Ellen and Leno. You are everywhere in the world at this point.
Perhaps the first time you saw us was the most recent gig we played at
the Roadhouse.
Some of you have voiced concerns both in person and on the message
board that you can not get a copy of State Fair. We are no longer
going to be selling it on DSM.com. The only way you can get it is
through our distributor and our distributor needs a kick in the arse
getting the product out to you. If you can believe this, our fifth
and best produced and most diverse album is sitting idle in a
warehouse waiting for you to come and get it. Despite great reviews
such as the one in the final issue of No Depression or by Kevin
O'Hare, a nationally syndicated reviewer for Newhouse News Service,
literally, there is no demand for the album, therefore the distributor
is not shipping it.
In the summertime, when I was a kid, a weekly ritual for myself, my
brother and my father was to pile into the brown Ford station wagon
and go to Lechmere's. There we would spend hours in their record
department. I was partial to the Beatles, Skynrd and the Who. My
brother was looking for music with good keys, Emerson Lake and Palmer,
ELO, Traffic, Head East, Steely Dan, Big Bands and Jazz. Dad could
also be found in the Jazz section checking out Dave Brubeck, the
Australian Jazz Quartet, or looking for the latest Dylan album. Guess
what folks? That is what you are going to have to do if you want
State Fair. Not only do you have to go the the record store (Barnes
and Noble, FYE, Circuit City, etc. Everywhere but Wal-Mart) but, you
have to ask them to order it for you.
I know, it seems like a lot of work. I guess you can order it online
from Barnes and Noble, but we need to get this disc in the stores, so
the uninitiated future Stuntfans can have something tangible and
colorful to look at to entice them into our world. It is You, the
Stuntfan, is who is going to make that happen. We need your support
more than ever.
There is something happening out there. You know it, you can feel it.
You feel it every time you buy gas for chrissakes. But it doesn't
have to be this way. Music is the most civilized and soul enriching
route for escapism available. Of course, the best form is live music,
but the next best thing is to plug in those headphones, crank that
baby up to 11 and let her rip.
There is a great cartoon on the cover of New Yorker Magazine, this
week. The owner of a bookstore is turning the key in the lock to his
establishment as he watches the apartment dweller, in the next doorway
receive a box from a UPS driver. It is a box that looks suspiciously
like the kind you would get from Amazon or some other online book,
music seller. Get the piksh?
I'm sure everyone is aware of the success of the Fox Searchlight
release Young @ Heart. If you liked what you saw and want to see
more, check out Drunk Stuntmen and the Young at Heart Chorus Back to
Back. This DVD documents the historic pairing of these two unique
groups during a group of shows in Northampton and Springfield,
Massachusetts. The DVD was recorded at the Academy of Music. You can
check out a clip on the front page of this website. The DVD is
available on this site as well as Filmbaby.com
Wednesday Night, June 4th, we are at the Sportsmen's Tavern in
Buffalo, NY. Then we head to Kingston, NY for a Show at the Basement.
From there it is on to Philadelphia for a gig at the Dawson St. Pub.
We round out the weekend on Saturday with the home field advantage
as we finish the trip at the Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall
River. Check the tour dates for more information.
It is just a suggestion but as always we encourage you to...

SESSION AMERICANA EXPLAINED
Yes, well ... in the grand hall of humor there reside many choices to
illicit laughs - sarcasm, self deprecation, and 'aw I'm just messin'
with ya' among them. In Ry's last missive he seems to have hit upon
all three and the result was shock and awe. Some expressed shock and
awe at the outlandish humor he intended, while others responded with
shock and awe as in depression, concern, and an overall sense of doom
for the fate of our band. The truth of the matter is - that these
email blasts are intended to illicit a response - and man did we get a
response! However enough of you fell into the latter category of
doomsday theorists that we felt the need to set the record straight,
so ... the band is not breaking up and we all get along as well as we
ever have.
While it's true that the band did not sell out the two shows at Passim
the way we had hoped, the fact is that we are psyched (stoked! as Sean
would say) to play on Saturday (which is Prince's 50th birthday by the
way...hmmmm) at one of our favorite venues anywhere. We go on at 7PM
and we'd truly be honored to have you there. Maybe if enough of you
respond in the next 24 hours we can add that second show after all!

.
<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
.
... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or
location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise
confirming details.

We're guessing eventually we'll settle
