BRATTLEBORO, VT, June 14 - The year 2008 is turning out to be
remarkable. Remarkably so. Much to my surprise, the onset of the
annual early-summer local music scene slowdown, which I thought I
detected around Memorial Day Weekend, actually has not yet
materialized. New England and Northeast local music events keep
coming along at a brisk pace. We received A LOT of news e-mails again
this week: more than I had time to fit in here. Even show bookings
appear to be picking up here and there.

NEW RELEASES
<> The latest list of new record releases issued by Newbury Comics
includes a nice and rather varied sprinkling of discs by New
England-connected artists.
CD New Releases Available Tuesday, June 10th...
BERGONZI, JERRY-Tenor Talk-$9.99
DINOSAUR JR-Hand It Over-$13.99
HANLEY, KAY-Weaponize-$10.99
JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN-To Survive-$9.99
ZANES, DAN-Nueva York!-$11.88
A member of Clan Lewis thinks DJ Skribble may be a New England act,
though I personally do not know.
DJ SKRIBBLE-Total Club Hits-$12.88
A fact that might interest some people about the following pairing is
that Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys was one of the original Aretha
Franklin fans. She released an album. He bought it. It was as
simple as that. Carl Wilson was extremely important to the success of
The Beach Boys, a thing of which one Boston-area rock journalist, the
great Brett Milano, seems quite aware.
I know nothing about the Beach Boys "U.S. Singles Collection." But
the old "Good Vibrations" box set was done very nicely, and I have no
reason to expect less in this case.
When Aretha Franklin's early Atlantic albums were first reissued on
CD, the sonics were basically the same as the vinyl minus the surface
noise. One would imagine this release of "Aretha Arrives" to be miles
above those early CDs.
BEACH BOYS-U.S. Singles Collection-$99.99
FRANKLIN, ARETHA-Aretha Arrives-$13.99
Incidentally, if I remember right, Carl Wilson once did a tour or at
least part of a tour with The Stompers out of Boston.

Rounder Records has a forthcoming release by Mike Gordon, late of the
famed Vermont jamband Phish.
"Mike Gordon
The Green Sparrow
Rounder Records
Street Date: August 5, 2008
<> "An artist known for his endless creativity and touring stamina,
Mike Gordon took 2007 off from touring and dedicated his time to
writing his new album, 'The Green Sparrow.' The end result is an
eclectic record boasting the former Phish bassist's skillful
assimilation of free-form rock & roll, calypso, pop and funk that also
showcases an unexpected side to his songwriting. The Green Sparrow
features Gordon's wide range of influences on a winning 10-track album
that reminds us that he is one of the most imaginative and
mold-breaking artists in music today. Recorded at Mike's home studio
in Vermont and mixed at The Barn (his former band's studio and art
space). The Green Sparrow features guest appearances from Gordon's
Phish band mates Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, Bill Kreutzmann
(Grateful Dead), Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), Ivan Neville and horn
players from Antibalas."

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK
<> The Green River Festival is a major item on the annual events
calendar of the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. It looks as
though this year's festival has a great lineup of talent. But even if
it were otherwise, Eric Royer's one-man band likely all by itself
would be worth the trip.

DIDI STEWART
Somebody To Love
<> "Didi Stewart lives her childhod fantasy on Saturday June 14, 7
p.m. at the Hatch Shell on the Boston Esplanade. She'll be filling in
for Grace Slick ('White Rabbit,' 'Somebody to Love') with Jefferson
Airplane/Starship at the WODS Summer Concert Series.
"The concert is free. Bring a picnic, your friends, your dogs, your
significant other (but don't take the brown acid).
"The band will be opening for America ('Horse With No Name,' 'Sister
Golden Hair')."
SOURCE: Didi Stewart, "Didi Stewart Does Grace Slick," June 13, 2008.
DIDI STEWART HAS a great big voice, and she is a fantastic rock
singer. So this ought to be an amazing experience for her and an
amazing show for everyone else. She logged some time at Studio
Bopnique not long ago, though we don't know what sort of recording
project she is working on. Her last couple projects have been real
departures for her, the latest being an album of original country
songs. It should surprise no one who is familiar with Didi's work
that the country record includes some catchy tunes. One in particular
- "Something Wicked" - has stuck with me, and I have had it in my head
on repeat play this week.
Incidentally, Ms. Stewart must get up really early. I picked up her
message 5 a.m.-ish the day it is dated. It was my first mail check of
the day, so who knows how much earlier it may have been sent.

FOX PASS: LAST SHOW UNTIL AUGUST

THE RETURN OF THE MARSHALLS
<> I had not seen the band name, The Marshalls, for a good long time,
except in reference to the past. And I wondered, when seeing a
Marshalls show listing with Fox Pass, whether this is something new
(again), or maybe I had just been missing Marshalls events all this
time. But, in fact, the latest mailing from Fox Pass does, indeed,
seem to be telling us that the band, The Marshalls, has been away but

REBECCA PADULA
Live on Vermont Public Radio
Sunday, June 15
Radio broadcasts, involving New England-connected artists on stations
that stream, are right up our line. Yet you would be surprised how
rare is the occasion when we receive an announcement of an event of
this sort far enough in advance to post it in our newsletter. Special
thanks, then, to Rebecca Padula for letting us know as early as she did.
Robert Resnik's "All the Traditions" is a REALLY important show on
Vermont's weekly radio calendar.
<> "Sunday I'm back in Vermont and you can catch me live on Vermont
Public Radio in the afternoon probably around 2 p.m. on All the
Traditions with host Robert Resnik. Songwriter Carol Abair and I will

Friends,' which will be released next weekend. Check us out at

JOE HUTCHINSON
"Hollylake and Silverwood" CD
Joe Hutchinson is an ex-New Jersey kid who, last I knew, was in Los
Angeles. He has been no stranger to Boston, though, his wife being a
Newton, Massachusetts gal.
<> "Comparisons to John Lennon and Ray Davies continue to pour in as
songwriter Joe HUTCH Hutchinson delivers yet another CD of melodic
gems, outtakes, and lo-fi soundscapes, this one featuring several cool
covers of songs by Buddy Holly, Dramarama, and The Lemonheads.
"His fourth release, 'Hollylake and Silverwood,' appears on
Rankoutsider Records, a new label run by respected industry veteran
Pat Todd (former leader of Lazy Cowgirls).
"Graduates of the original Silverlake underground pop scene, Hutch
mines classic 60's & 70's rock to create 'retro-forward' soundscapes
that draw the listener in, but it's the quality songwriting and choice
of cover tunes that keep you coming back again and again."

SUMMER FESTIVALS QUERY
<> If there is a mid-summer to late summer music festival that you are
particularly excited about and you would be willing to share your
enthusiasm with us, please e-mail us by way of the following Web page:
http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm
Perhaps in addition to the name of the festival and where and when it
happens you could say a bit about what makes this particular festival
special - say, an important or unusual booking, consistent excellence
in programming - those sorts of things. Last year and so far this
year, many recommendations to us have been based in very large part on
a festival's extraordinary location.
What we mostly need, I think, festival-wise, is a First Annual Boston
Groupie News Punk-Fest.

TOM RUSH
Reunion Shows
Over the Past Few Days
The shows noted below by Tom Rush are now things of the recent past.
But for those who are interested in keeping track of what Rush is up
to these days, there is interesting reading to be had.
<> "It's reunion week on the road. On Wednesday I'm at the Cactus
Café in Austin with my old New Hampshire buddy, Bill Staines. (This
one somehow fell through the cracks at the booking agency and so
didn't get posted at TomRush.com until just now - sorry 'bout that.)
I haven't seen Bill in a long long time, and I'm hoping (only hoping,
mind you) that I can talk him into joining me on stage for a song or
two. Merrimack County? Mighty Storm?
"Thursday I'm at the McDavid Studio at the Bass Performance Hall in
Fort Worth. No reunion element here, just a very lovely space at the
Bass. For those of you in the area who know the Bass, I need say no
more. I'd pay to go to the Bass even if nobody were playing.
"Friday - ah Friday! Manship Theater in Baton Rouge with my old
sidekicks Duke Bardwell on bass and Casey Kelly on guitar. This will
be major mojo, and major fun! I haven't seen Duke since the early
'70s. He left my employ to go to work for some guy named Elvis, quit
music altogether for a while, and is now back into it in a big way.
Casey Kelly I've seen from time to time in Nashville, but we haven't
had a chance to sit down and play in decades. We've been rehearsing
by email, sort of, and will grind the rust off a bunch of tunes Friday
afternoon. If you're anywhere within striking distance, this will be
very special!"

Washington, DCâ€"Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP, an
intellectual property law firm of 350 lawyers, is set to release
Interlude, a charity CD to benefit musicians through MusiCares®, which
ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial,
medical and personal need. For the last 10 years Finnegan has hosted an
impressive selection of critically acclaimed musical artists to
perform at
its annual International Trademark Association (INTA) reception. This
year, Finnegan chose to celebrate ten years of amazing performances with
a commemorative CD that would help support musicians in need through a
donation to the MusiCares Foundation. All of the musicians on the CD
have donated their music. Downloads are available with a donation to
MusiCares at www.finnegan.com.
At first glance it may seem an odd pairing, however Rob Litowitz
(Finnegan partner, music fan, and founder of indie label Parkinsong
Records)
credits some of the growth and reputation of his firm’s trademark
practice to the unique relationship that it has developed with this cast
of burgeoning and established musical artists. Finnegan takes pride in
the fact that it has had the opportunity to introduce colleagues and
friends to so many wonderful independent alternative artists. Wanting to
give back to the music community, Finnegan decided to make a charitable
donation to MusiCares and release a CD to commemorate the artists and
their memorable performances.
Over the years, Litowitz and his partners have managed to gather-up
some of the most talented independent musicians for their events.
Contributing to the CD is Austin’s critically acclaimed country
artist Kelly
Willis, Boston folk-pop singer Catie Curtis, torch singer Eleni
Mandell, silken-voiced folk singer-songwriter Ana Egge, Chicago
indie-rock
husband and wife duo Utah Carol, country rock band Last Train Home,
Atlanta folk rocker Michelle Malone, classically trained violinist turned
Americana artist Amy Farris, folk singer-songwriter and guitarist Jonatha
Brooke, Houston singer-songwriter Sarah Hickman and GRAMMY-winning
songwriter Terri Hendrix. Also, legendary sideways roots rocker Chuck
Prophet has contributed the previously unreleased track “Bring on the
Love.”
Through a donation to MusiCares, Finnegan and its artist “alumni”
are supporting musicians and helping to ensure that those in the music
industry have access to a support system. MusiCares is a charitable
foundation of The Recording Academy®, which supports the music community
and honors artists’ achievements through the annual GRAMMY Awards.

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England

at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
