BRATTLEBORO, VT, June 21 - Our news e-mail receipts this week were
very strong: moreso than one might think from the size of this
newsletter issue. We also received a good many general correspondence
e-mails, a lot having to do with the death of Jack Rootoo. Special
thanks to the several folks who sent us additional and updated
information on this topic. I knew just as soon as we received the
first news from Artie Freedman that, though very sad, this would be of
great interest to many of our readers.
A reunion of the Pioneer Valley and New York City 1970s all-female
trio, The Deadly Nightshade, is in the works; and we received much
correspondence, as well, about this. We were reminded by Ray Mason,
of the Lonesome Brothers and the Ray Mason Band, that one of the
Deadly Nightshade albums, in particular, was loaded with supporting
musicians who already were or who went on to become high profile
players in the music business. I heard The Deadly Nightshade on the
greatest of all and longest-running rock 'n' roll television
broadcast, "Sesame Street."
It has been a busy week, though less reading matter than has been
usual lately came out of it.

NEW RELEASES LISTED BY NEWBURY COMICS
<> The only item on the latest Newbury Comics new releases list that I
recognized as being a New England-connected product is
SEBADOH-Bubble And Scrape-$11.88
Newbury Comics also seems to have Bang Camaro pint glasses on sale.
Bang Camamro Pint Glass for $2.99 (reg. priced $4.99)
I was REALLY surprised to see reference to a 2-CD deluxe edition
release of "Pacific Ocean Blue," the solo album by Dennis Wilson of
The Beach Boys.
Dennis Wilson "Pacific Ocean Blue: Deluxe Edition" 2-CD set for $19.99
Dennis Wilson was the sex symbol of The Beach Boys; and when one
considers some of the publicity he got, he must have had an image as
something of a bimbo. Yet when his famed brother Brian Wilson stopped
contributing new material in large quantity to The Beach Boys, Dennis,
more than anyone else, took up the slack. Dennis Wilson's songwriting
was inconsistent, ranging from brilliant to quite dreary, and he was
far from prolific. But he turned out classic songs such as "Forever,"
"Only With You," "Slip on Through," and "Steamboat." Who knows how a
2-CD deluxe edition would come out, but I really liked the original
version of "Pacific Ocean Blue." And the cover looked fantastic on
the twelve-inch vinyl release.

THE PRESS RELEASES RECEIVED THIS WEEK
<> Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Not really a press release, this is a
somewhat longer piece made up of two items that have been circulating
on the Web. It ought to be of interest to fans of Guitar Hero and
Aerosmith.
<> The Deadly Nightshade Reunion, July 2. We have received a decent
amount of correspondence about this reunion show already. Scroll on
down and get the full scoop.
<> Rock Opera. I have no idea how many of our readers are interested
in rock opera, though a lot seems likely. To those who ARE interested
in rock opera and might be curious to take a look at something related
and from a very different point of view, I suggest scrolling down to
the press release which I have headed

.
<> I WILL DO MY VERY BEST to keep this newsletter going. But the
task has always been quite hard and really time-consuming. Our
newsletter readers see only a part of what we do, and this is truly a
very big undertaking. It is not even the slightest exaggeration to
say that the changes Yahoo has made lately to Yahoo Mail Classic are,
from our point of view, a total disaster. These changes already make
several steps in our work harder and more time-consuming. The e-mail
account attached to this Yahoo Group, though, remains untouched ...
for now. But if and when it is converted to the new Yahoo Mail
Classic, it would almost certainly make this newsletter, as we have
known it up to now, prohibitively labor-intensive. The only good news
- beyond the fact that, for some reason, Yahoo has spared this account
from the company's recent ill-advised destructiveness - is that I have
gotten a list of the problems Yahoo has newly created into the hands
of Yahoo's quality control department. This is no small thing. Even
back a few years ago when Yahoo was mismanaged beyond belief, getting
the attention of quality control still could do some good. So this
newsletter may be facing doom and gloom or we may not: we just don't
know yet. Meanwhile, as I said, if I can keep it going, I will. This
is a sort of thing I have wanted to do going back at least to the
mid-1970s, and I have no doubt whatsoever that this is a worthwhile
effort.
.
<> We have a little more news - not much - and a press release of a
size that means it will have to keep until I can get on a high-speed
public-access computer after sending this issue. Since timeliness is
important, I am going to mail this newsletter issue with what I have
already compiled into it. Some and maybe even all of what is left
over will still be current next week.

MY OWN KNOWLEDGE OF CURRENT AFFAIRS is not at all current these days,
so I took the liberty of checking in with Kier Byrnes of Three Day
Threshold about the United States military mission in Honduras. At
its heart - or at least in one very important aspect - the mission is
pretty much what one might guess: working to cut the flow of illegal
drugs into the United States. A recent overnight radio broadcast
about this effort - specifically, the effort in Mexico - was not at
all encouraging. So it seems likely that the troups in Honduras have
their work cut out for them. Kier and his bandmates clearly attach
much importance to this Three Day Threshold show of support for US
troups who are doing a difficult and, no doubt, very dangerous job.
Best of luck to the members of Three Day Threshold and to the members
of their audience in Honduras. - Ed.

THE DEADLY NIGHTSHADE JULY 2008 REUNION
Press Release
<> Thirty years after their rise to national Almost Famous status, The
Deadly Nightshade, western Massachusetts' pioneering 1970s women's
rock/country band, is reuniting for a mini-tour, including a one-night
gig at the Institute for the Musical Arts in Goshen on July 2.
"It's fitting that we'll be playing at the Institute, considering that
it's June Millington's place," notes Helen Hooke, the Nightshade's
lead guitar/fiddle player. "She was in Fanny, one of the very few
other women's bands in the seventies that managed to land a major
label recording contract, aside from The Deadly Nightshade. In those
days record companies only wanted all-boy bands."
The Nightshade originally got together in 1972, shortly after Hooke,
rhythm guitarist Anne Bowen, and bass player Pamela Robin Brandt
graduated from Smith and Mt. Holyoke. "We'd actually all played
together during college in another female band, a rock group called
Ariel," relates Bowen. "We played the Fillmore East and had some
label interest, but didn't get a contract."
"One major label told us they already had an all-girl band, like a
women's band was a novelty act, The Singing Dogs," says Brandt.
"We were in another producer's office," grimaces Hooke, "and an A&R
guy stuck his head in and said, 'Don't sign an all-girl band. You'll
end up paying for their abortions."
Retreating back to the Pioneer Valley, the three were were doing
various odd jobs, including construction site clean-up. Then
Northampton's fledgling feminist Valley Women's Center, which Bowen
had helped found, needed musical entertainment for an International
Women's Day event. "We couldn't find any other women rock musicians,
and we still had the amplifiers," recalls Bowen. "So we put together
a quick and dirty band to perform there."
"The response was incredible!" exclaims Hooke. "And immediately,
offers for other gigs started coming in. We thought, 'Hmm. Sure
beats collecting garbage.'"
"So we learned around 100-150 songs, of all sorts: rock, country,
bluegrass and jug band songs for folk gigs, Motown stuff for dances,"
says Bowen. "We wanted to be able to play anyplace that wanted to
hire us."
"And we started writing our own feminist anthems," says Hooke.
"We also wrote songs about food, plastic surgery, and laundromats,"
adds Brandt.
After three years of packing venues ranging from the legendary Rusty
Nail in Sunderland [Massachusetts] and the Saints (a Boston women's
bar) to the equally legendary Max's Kansas City in New York, The
Deadly Nightshade signed a recording contract with the RCA custom
label, Phantom. During their career, The Deadly Nightshade recorded
two albums featuring original songs ("The Deadly Nightshade" and "F &
W") for RCA/Phantom. Both received preliminary Grammy nominations for
Best New Artist. The Deadlies also released two singles, including a
disco version of the theme from "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman."
"That one started as a joke at one concert when I broke a string and
Pam and Helen had to kill time," confesses Bowen. "But it charted
number 67 nationally and went top ten in Miami and Toledo."
The band toured nationally as Billy Joel's opening act. Additionally,
they opened shows for Sister Sledge, Commander Cody, Poco, Peter
Frampton, Elvin Bishop, Don McLean, Lily Tomlin, and Kermit the Frog,
among others. "We appeared on lots of TV shows," said Hooke. "But
about half-a-dozen segments on 'Sesame Street' were the biggest thrill."
[For me, too! Seeing these gals on "Sesame Street" was easily among
the high points of my television-watching career. The first time I
watched these three on "Sesame Street" I was quite simply astonished.
- Ed.]
Clubs that The Deadly Nightshade headlined include the Bottom Line,
the Other End, and Folk City (New York), the Troubadour (Los Angeles),
the Boarding House in San Francisco, Passim (Boston), the Main Line
(Philadelphia), and numerous rural New England bars with bullet holes
in the walls.
Folkies may recall The Deadly Nightshade as the loudest act to ever
perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival (twice). They also played
the National Women's Music Festival three times, and blew out the
electrical power at the New England Women's Music Festival.
And dances to cap off conferences for NOW and other beleaguered
women's organizations were a specialty. "After a weekend of political
fighting, there's nothing like some 'Dancing in the Street,'" notes
Brandt.
In 1978 The Deadly Nightshade became the first women's band to be
represented in the women's history archives of The Smithsonian, in
Washington D.C. In the mid-1990s, The Deadly Nightshade was inducted
into the archives of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Since Deadlies days the three women have pursued separate paths in
different parts of the country. Brandt's a Miami-based journalist,
Hooke manages a New York-based firm, and Bowen's varied career has led
her from the Women's Action Alliance to owning a restaurant; she
currently runs a school lunch program in Tucson. But Hooke and Brandt
also never stopped playing music professionally over the years, and
Bowen, who did hang up her guitar (and Appalachian dancing doll), is
ready for another go.
"The Deadly Nightshade played loud electric music back when it was
supposed to be a men's game," Brandt grins. "It's still supposed to
be a young people's game. Seems about the right time for some more fun.
Venue for The Deadly Nightshade's July 2 concert is The Big Barn at
the Institute for the Musical Arts (165 Cape St., Goshen, MA 01032).

EAST VILLAGE OPERA COMPANY

East Village Opera Company Transform Classical Melodies into Rock Epics

EAST VILLAGE OPERA COMPANY TRANSFORM CLASSICAL MELODIES INTO ROCK EPICS
ON 'OLD SCHOOL'
New York, NY-- East Village Opera Company, New York City's powerhouse
rock/opera hybrid group, have created a new album of amplified and
electrified opera masterpieces on 'Old School' (August 12/ Decca). Led by
creators Peter Kiesewalter and Tyley Ross, East Village Opera Company
takes several centuries' worth of opera's greatest hits as their
launching point for an album that took 12 months and 14 engineers to
record and
mix in 10 different studios worldwide.
As they did on their highly praised, self-titled Decca/Universal debut
album, EVOC takes some of the most recognizable arias by giants like
Wagner, Handel, Verdi, Bach, and Puccini and re-imagine them as rock
epics, using a full symphony orchestra, R&B horns, and a choir alongside
the group's guitars, drums, keyboards, strings, and singers. The
resulting pieces are instantly recognizable to any fan of opera, but also
recall visionary rock groups like Queen, Meatloaf, and The Who in their
grandiose wall-of-sound approach. Says Kiesewalter, "The pomposity of
opera lends itself to the majesty of rock, and vice-versa. We embrace it,
and we don't try to water it down. Instead, we imagine what these
composers would have used, had they been alive today. I know that Freddy
Mercury and George Frederic Handel alike would be using Pro Tools and
computers were they alive."
Lead singer Tyley Ross and arranger/multi-instrumentalist Peter
Kiesewalter co-founded EVOC after meeting in 2001 while working on the
soundtrack for a feature film in Canada. The director's request to
"let me
hear Italian opera in a way that hasn't been done before" was the seed
that eventually led the two to form the group. After a few years of
working on the tracks, they printed up a small run of 1000 discs of their
album entitled 'La Donna', which led to several buzz-building dates at
Joe's Pub in NYC, and eventually a deal with Decca Records.
Critics have been vocal in their praise for the group:
"The band rocks hard, and deranges the opera stuff with savvy skill."-
Wall Street Journal
"…nobody puts a fresher, friskier contemporary spin on opera's
greatest hits than the East Village Opera Company."- Chicago Tribune
“See them now while you can still get close. The group's charisma is
inescapable and infectious…electrifies the classics for a new
generation."-- Time Out New York
"Opera gets rock, pop makeover…markedly different." -- Billboard
"Kiesewalter and Ross produce something genuinely fresh that combines
classic beauty with rock energy." -- Boston Herald
East Village Opera Company will tour the U.S. this summer. Full track
