BRATTLEBORO, VT, July 5 - The New England popular music community
continues to keep up a brisk pace. Right now we are in the midst of a
time of year that is traditionally slow. But since mailing the
previous issue of this newsletter, we have received enough news
e-mails to make this easily one of our busiest weeks ever. There is
no way I will have time to compile everything we have received into
this newsletter issue. So, as Peter Wolf would say, let's not waste
any time...
(Except I will fit in this brief, parenthetical aside to the effect
that, so far, Yahoo still has not wrecked the e-mail account attached
to this newsletter, though Yahoo Mail has cut a path of destruction
nearly everywhere else. We are thrilled to say we still have the good
old-fashioned version of Yahoo Mail Classic ... you know, the version
that works.)

NEW RELEASES THIS PAST WEEK
Listed by Newbury Comics
<> This week's Newbury Comics list of new releases is surprisingly
short. In connection with this one, as well as earlier lists, one
person called to my attention that a good number of recent releases
have been issued in eco-packs: packaging intended to be
environmentally friendly. I have something perhaps similar from way,
WAY back. A Beach Boys album, titled "Summer in Paradise" and dated
1992, was released in an EcoPak, which was intended, in part, to get
around the cardboard long-boxes which were prevalent in the early days
of CDs. "Summer in Paradise" was about half-and-half, quality-wise,
which is amazingly good for Beach Boys product as late as the 1990s.
Covers such as "Hot Fun in the Summertime" (Sly and the Family Stone)
and "Remember 'Walking in the Sand'" (The Shangri-Las, Aerosmith) were
especially strong. So anyway, maybe members of The Beach Boys were
ahead of their times on this environment-friendly packaging thing.
Here is a sprinkling of the latest releases. Sorry it is so heavy on
oldies and major label records. Not only have I not heard most of the
acts on the Newbury Comics list, I have never even heard OF most of
them. So noting other artists here would be nothing but a wild
guessing game.
DONOVAN-Playlist: Very Best Of Donovan-$8.99
HEART-Playlist: Very Best Of Heart-$8.99
LOS LONELY BOYS-Forgiven-$12.88
MAYER, JOHN-Where The Light Is-Live-$13.88
MORRISON, VAN-Veedon Fleece-$11.88
(A Van Morrison cut which is currently playing on our local radio
sounds as though Morrison is paying Mick Jagger the sincerest form of
flattery.)
NELSON, WILLIE-Stardust (Legacy Edition)-$24.99

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK
<> Dennis Brennan's two residencies this summer. This is not an
actual press release, but I think it generally fits in with the more
formal releases.
<> Session Americana Newsletter. Yes, this is a fan newsletter and
not a press release. But this mailing is far different from the usual
SA letter, and it clearly belongs among the press releases much more
than, say, the ACTUAL press releases that Rounder Records formerly
sent (InfoMercials which were EXTREMELY heavy on the 'Mercial part).
<> Dropkick Murphys' July 11th Portland, Maine Venue Change. This
item is a lot more extensive than it might seem.
<> Kindred Folk of Brattleboro, Vermont festival announcement. This
mini-festival takes place in a tiny park - Pliny Park - in the center
of our home community, Brattleboro, Vermont. The park is named for
Pliny Burrows, who was my landlord at the time when I came up with the
first idea which led to the next idea which led through countless
steps which ultimately led to the start-up of this newsletter. Is
this stuff historic or what?!
This weekend also features what is being billed, totally incorrectly,
as Brattleboro's first music festival. The Brattleboro Folk Festival
of the 1970s ran for five or six consecutive years, beating the
imaginatively-named BrattStock Festival by several country miles.
Nonetheless, BrattStock is a great idea, the location is not at all
far off our main street (mere feet from where I bought my first record
album here in Brattleboro in 1970), and the location is precisely two
blocks from where I live. Personal thanks to the BrattStock
organizers for this thoughtful gesture.
<> Americana Music Festival and Conference latest, updated press release.
.
WELL GANG, I HAVE RUN OUT of time. Yes, it's official. There is
lots more material but not enough time to compile it in.
Possibly half of what we have left has to do with rock 'n roll gaming.
Big week for rock 'n' roll gaming.
Maybe next time I can work in some material left over from this issue.
This, No. 282, is our biggest newsletter issue of 2008: a VERY busy
year. - Ed.

THE ORCHIDS
"Hello, Josephine"
<> We received an interesting inquiry about The Orchids, a band that
played the Worcester, Massachusetts area around 1964. A cover of
"Hello, Josephine" by The Orchids charted in Worcester. The band
opened shows with "C.C. Rider." If you can help our correspondent
with information, please write him by way of
. . . KevGuy 11 At AOL Dot Com
And if it is not too much trouble, please copy us at
. . . FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com
We are curious, too.
(Our actual address, when jammed together in the usual e-mail address
form, is all lower case. I actually can't tell whether the first
letter in "kevguy" is capitalized, though if I were to guess I would
guess not.)
In the 1970s when I was trying to switch from national and
international star acts, as almost all my listening matter, to music
having more to do with what was going on around here, record stores in
Worcester, Nashua NH, Springfield and Northampton Mass. played a very
big part in the switch I made. So a question such as this about a
Worcester band, in a way, takes me back to my own early days. My
expeditions into Worcester, incidentally, are how I got to be early in
learning the musical virtues of present-day Dennis Brennan bandmate
Duke Levine.

HERE IS THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE WE RECEIVED about the Mieka Pauley
Band's Fearless Music TV appearance:
<> "The band and I will be on Fearless Music TV in New York City (and
other cities) this Saturday night, July 5, playing my song, 'Faster.'
"I know for sure it airs in NYC this Saturday night at 12:30am on Fox
5 - but it apparently airs in a ton of different cities, at different
times. (More info at Fearless's MySpace blog.)
"Before and after the episode airs, you can vote for us at
http://www.fearlessmusic.tv
to help us get featured again on next week's episode (and thank you if
you do).
"PS: about 'Faster': . this song appeared on a couple previous EPs of
mine, and is not on my most recent CD, 'Elijah.' I repeatedly
scratched it from set lists and decided it was completely used up -
but then Brian Cassagnol (band guitarist / producer of 'Elijah')
resurrected it with this beautiful arrangement - I actually fell in
love with my song again, which is hard to do. If you've been to a
live band show recently, you've probably heard this version already -
if not, you can tune in this weekend.

WILLIE ALEXANDER
In Concert at Gloucester, Massachusetts
July 19, 2008
In our five years plus of publishing this newsletter, we have had to
use quite a variety of materials as information sources, but I am
reasonably certain this is the first time we used the name and
description of an e-mail attachment as our data source. Our copy of
Willie Alexander's recent press release was defective such that not
only would it not open, it caused Wordpad to crash. So, here is what
little we have left:
<> "Willie Alexander Concert 07-19-08 at Gloucester UU, Press Release
06-12-08.doc (27KB)"
SOURCE: Willie Alexander, "Willie Alexander Show on July 19," July 3,
2008.
I take this to mean - and you may, too - that Willie Alexander has a
show booked at the Gloucester, Massachusetts Unitarian Universalist
church for July 19, 2008 and that it took him two and a half weeks to
get around to mailing us his press release.
Elsewhere in this issue we have posted a query as to whether anyone
reading this issue has WA's attachment (in better shape than our copy)
and can send it to us in an e-mail as plain text. - Ed.

"Social Band Commission / Archetypal Dreamwork
<> "This past year The Burlington-based vocal ensemble, Social Band,
has been commissioning Vermont composers to write works for them based
on certain themes. I wrote a piece for their 'Themes of Work' and for
this composition I used the concept of the inner work of Archetypal
Dream Therapy. I've been learning this work for the past several
years through North of Eden, an inspired and dedicated group of dream
therapists who train with Marc Bregman of Morrisville. Marc brings
his intense spiritual connection with the divine to help others find
meaning in their dreams and the dreams of their clients. Using a text
by Bristol poet and North of Eden teacher Karl Van Vliet, I wrote a
SATB hymn-like piece entitled 'Restoration,' and you can hear it a the
North of Eden website (NorthofEden.com)."

THE WHO
On Rock Band
<> "Here's the rundown of Who tracks upcoming.
* * * Amazing Journey
* * * Baba O'Riley
* * * Behind Blue Eyes
* * * Eminence Front
* * * Going Mobile
* * * Leaving Here
* * * My Generation (LIVE)
* * * Real Good Looking Boy
* * * Sea & Sand
* * * Summertime Blues (LIVE)
* * * Who Are You
* * * Young Man Blues (LIVE)
"The cost will be 20 bucks US.
"Some of these tracks are poor choices. 'Sea and Sand' instead of
'5:15'? Live tracks? Will they still feature the original audience
backing? 'My Generation''s original masters were lost or damaged,
and the deluxe version was thrown together from other source. The
live versions of 'Summertime' and 'Young Man Blues' are surely the
definitive Who versions, but again, do they really work within the
game? Going Mobile seems like a comparably poor choice, too.
"Conspicuously missing is 'Pinball Wizard,' but if the video on G4 is
accurate, we will be seeing it in Rock Band 2 (or, at least, it's
intended; 'Rockaway Beach' was one of the demo songs and was replaced
in the game proper by 'Blitzkreig Bop.' It did, however, appear as
DLC [downloadable content]). Time will tell.
"Whether I personally pick up the whole pack depends on whether it
will cost me more to buy a la carte or in total. The packs give a
price break, and on larger packs (The full albums, for example),
these can be so sizable that not buying a couple of songs could cost
more than buying them all. I'm sure it will sell well, as the Who is
big money."

THE KONKS
On Rock Band
<> "One of the tracks [on the Rock Band bonus setlist] is '29 Fingers'
by the Konks. The singer and the drummer are one and the same. It's
a simple song that harkens back to garage rock and punk. It's also
got very simple, very amusing lyrics.
"29 fingers and boy are we having fun//29 fingers and only 6 are thumbs"
followed by 'Cheap Guitars and only 2 lousy drums.' This second line
became more amusing when I discovered that the entire song is actually
played on two of the pads. The Konks' drummer/singer literally only
plays two drums, so it's not entirely surprising. The band only has
29 fingers, to boot."

"LEAKED ROCK BAND 2 TRACKS
Whenever I can, when material sent us is technically incompatible in
some sense, I clean it up as best I can. But I decided to slip this
in at the very last minute, and there is no time left to supply actual
quote marks and whatever else is needed. I doubt most people will
have trouble reading the following.
The word, "kill," of course, is used euphemistically. Selection of
recordings to include in all kinds of various artist collections and
in "Best of" sets can draw out some strong opinions.
One veteran superstar band has had countless "Best of" and "Greatest
Hits" collections on the market over the years and decades, and over
and over again they have included one cut that is a real loser. But
after all this time, they have worn me down, and I have finally gotten
into that track. (Band and cut to remain unnamed.)
Anyway, here is material we received having to do with the
much-anticipated Rock Band 2 game:
<> Both of these come by way of Destructoid

* Kim Wilde - “Kids in America”
* Motörhead - “Ace of Spades”

* Journey - “Any Way You Want It”
* The Who - “Pinball Wizard”

* "Testify" - Rage Against the Machine
* "American Woman" - The Guess Who (or Lenny Kravitz)
* "White Wedding" - Billy Idol
* "You Oughta Know" - Alanis Morisette
* "Aqualung" - Jethro Tull
* "Bad Reputation" - Thin Lizzy (or Joan Jett)
* "We Got the Beat"- The Go-Go's
* "Man in the Box" - Alice in Chains
* "Spoonman" - Soundgarden
These come by way of a member of the Scorehero forums who claims to
have played some of the tracks.
http://www.destructoid.com/rumortoid-even-more-rock-band-2-songs-leaked-93426.ph\
tml
The first batch of songs, while probably legit (as they come from an
in-game screen) may not reflect the final lineup, as three songs used
in early stages of Rock Band didn't (Or made it later as downloadable
content). The second batch is more suspect, having no real proof at
all, but could well be legit. I would think someone who played the
songs would know which artist was in the version, as well.
I'd kill to have half the songs in that lineup, and kill to have a
few of them removed.

AMERICAN HISTORIC MUSIC
You cannot imagine how sad it makes me to say this, but there is now
practically no chance I will be able to bring my Alleghanians research
project through to the point of getting it published.
For those who are new to this newsletter or who, for whatever reason,
do not recall my references to the Alleghanians, this was a
nineteenth-century popular music group that was often compared to the
countless professional bands of singing families which seemed to be
all over the place in the 1840s.
By far the most famous and most important of these outfits was the
Hutchinson Family of Milford, New Hampshire (and of Lynn,
Massachusetts, and of Hutchinson, Minnesota, AND of...). My existing
books about the Hutchinson Family (self-published in Web pages on the
Internet) are WAY more extensive than anything that would be possible
today having to do with the Alleghanians. But a big point here is
that the Hutchinson Family has been written up for publication over
and over and over again (the first biography, a booklet, came out in
1852, the latest full-length biographical book is only about a year
old, and a tremendous amount has been put in print in between times),
while nothing whatsoever has been published about the Alleghanians -
ever - on anywhere near the scale I have in mind. For that reason,
this was to have been my major contribution to the history of American
music. But...
I have run into the same problem that probably the great majority of
people who try to do anything at all with music face: lack of funding.
I had a scheme - several of them - to fund this project, and it has
failed, probably taking with it my last hope. It was not even
possible to bring in the money that would have bought me time while
taking another shot at arranging the necessary funding for the longer
term.
So on the Fourth of July, as a parade went by right outside my
windows, I listened to "America the Beautiful," "It's a Grand Old
Flag," "The Stars and Stripes Forever," and lots more, while musing on
the irony of how several years of long days - starting in the middle
of the night and running into the following evening - seven days a
week without exception has produced stacks of papers on American music
and drama that probably now will do nothing more than gather dust.
In order to complete my Alleghanians project, I would need to go
through the tremendously time-consuming process of collecting several
mountains more of information, to organize what I have in some
sensible form to interest both academics and general-interest readers,
to stimulate much wider interest in the Alleghanians, and to get my
results into print in some broadly-accessible way. Today, it looks as
though none of these things is going to happen.
This is a fantastically depressing situation for me to face.
I am including this sizeable item in this newsletter issue - knowing
perfectly well that probably most readers will scroll right past it -
to commiserate with the many, many people who have had music-related
ventures and wishes of their own - recording projects, admission into
degree programs, hoped-for composing opportunities, a music store
sufficiently funded with up-front money, a folk, blues, or bluegrass
magazine, a documentary film, an amply-funded music video, a rock 'n'
roll novel, national/international tours, dream jobs, a booking into
Symphony Hall (and the list goes on and on) - shipwrecked. I hope you
feel my pain as I feel yours.
If I was in my twenties, I could get back to this task at some
not-yet-known later time. But I haven't been in my twenties for more
decades than I care to count.
If anyone thinks this sounds like I am giving up, they don't know me
really well. I will go to my grave with a pen and paper in hand and a
next step in mind, no matter how hopeless the situation may be. But
prospects are looking very, very bad - nonexistant - at this
particular moment. After what it is no exaggeration to describe as a
monumental amount of work, this is an extremely difficult and sad
situation to face.

SESSION AMERICANA NEWSLETTER
This email isn't the usual ad for gigs, but a general update on all
things Session Americana. I hope its slightly entertaining and will
try to refrain from shadowy allusions.
First of all, some of you may have noticed that we're not playing
anywhere at the moment. As a matter of fact, we have six weeks off.
Our next gig is at Mashpee Commons on August 7th. We put our Summer
black-out dates on the calendar, only to find that the entire Summer
was blacked out with vacations and other commitments. Oh well.
We've scheduled some time in the studio in August and will hopefully
release some mixed songs in the Fall. I think a vinyl "single" may be
in order as I have officially pronounced the CD "dead" - and truth by
told, I never liked CDs so I'm kind of happy about that. The only
problem is: "What do we sell now?" There are two schemes we're working
on. The first is a catalog of Session Americana brand products
ranging from jeans to boots to instruments. It will be like Mary Kay
where we have concerts and then bring our samples out. The second
idea is to sell everything we bring with us to shows: guitars, pump
organs, tables, clothes. ... Truth be told, we'll probably just keep
not-making-any-money.
All our music is available on Itunes, by the way. We even get a slow
trickle of cash from this direction, so if you know anyone who wants
to pick up some tunes send them over there. Our albums have never
been cohesive, so just pick the tunes you want.
Speaking of money, a few of us were asked to be the band on the set of
a Disney / Bruce Willis / SciFi cop movie. As speaking actors (we
played in a scene), we got our own trailer rooms, hair and makeup, and
union wages for the day. Its a very long story (and quite funny) but
we've basically got our fingers crossed that the scene makes the final
cut. This is not a group which is totally new to Hollywood. Jim was
in several scenes of "Wild at Heart", none of which made the final
cut! Billy, meanwhile, was part of the historical calamity known as
"Streets of Fire". I still haven't seen it, but I'm thinking it will
be a good summer rental, maybe a double feature with "Hearts of Fire"
starring Bob Dylan and Fiona.
Next on the agenda for the Fall is the release of the "Rose Polenzani
with Session Americana" record. That comes out in late September with
shows in Boston, Vermont, and possibly New York. You can see Kimon and
Sean play with Rose opening for the Indigo girls around New England
next week.
We have already booked several NYC/Banjo Jim's shows in the Fall and
will return to our Tuesday residency in Cambridge in October.
Thats it for now. See you in mid-August.

DROPKICK MURPHYS
July 11th Portland, Maine Venue Change
<> The show on July 11th scheduled for Hadlock Field has been moved to
Cumberland County Civic Center due to some issues we had getting the
show set up in a way we thought the fans would be happy with.
The Portland Seadogs have a game the night before the show which meant
we would have had a very short amount of time to set up the stage,
lights and sound. This, in turn, meant we needed to have more crew
working on the grounds and the stage and production had to be driven
onto the field with trucks. The groundskeepers at the park had
serious concerns about what this might do to the condition of the
field in the middle of the season so they suggested a different
layout. The new proposed layout had the stage further away from the
seats and on an angle. We wouldn't have been happy putting on a DKM
show like that where the audience would have been so far away from the
band or in a spot where it might be difficult to watch the show.
The other two baseball park shows are good to go as we are able to
bring our production in much earlier and have time to carry all the
equipment onto the field, leaving less of a footprint on the park
grounds. We are able to put the stage, lights and speakers where we
need it to be to make two great shows.
Fortunately the Cumberland County Civic Center, which is just around
the corner from Hadlock Field, is available and we are able to easily
move the production into that venue and put on a better show that we
think you guys will be much happier with.
Any tickets you have are still valid so no need to do anything, no
need to swap them out or change them. All tickets that say Hadlock
Field will be good at the Civic Center. Also, the good news is that
the Civic Center is all general admission so those people who held off
buying tickets for Hadlock Field as they did not want reserved seating
can now get the GA tickets they were after. Here are the new details;

St. (Route 5)
Featuring many Kindred Folk Artists & other Regional Musicians! (below)
Info: Call days @802-258-9820 or bvd@...
June 28 - Jesse Lepkoff - Singer and Guitarist - Jesse
Lepkoff’s original songs, are very personal, almost intimate
expressions that draw from the influences of Brazilian bossa nova, and
classical music. Yet his songs defy classification. His heartfelt
melodies, with poetic lyrics, and the subtle exotic harmonies of his
guitar combine to create moods both hopeful and nostalgic. Lepkoff
strivesfor originality and honesty in his compositions. He is currently
recordinghis first CD, “View of the Past.”
July 5 - Ali Chambliss - Singer-songwriter Ali Chambliss will
perform (or you can say.... Performing) original songs of love, life,
and the experience of being "awake & quite alive!". As a local music-
artist she strives to maintain an active place in our community by
sharing her creative spirit of song-writing and her lovely vocals at
many area venues, has founded the Kindred Folk-Vermont collective of
regional musicians, and teaches children's music at NEYT. She will
have her current CD "Alisongs-Live" available for sale.
July 12 - Julie Waters is a folk artist in the truest
tradition, weaving stories, motion and rhythm, creating lyrical poetry
through the strings of her guitar. This is more than simply a creative
approach to music. This is performance which turns on a dime, first
evoking ancient modal melodies, and then suddenly sliding into a rock
and roll beat which takes you straight into the 21st century.
July 19 - T. Breeze Verdant - Rocking Folker. “Folk music
with a rock and roll heart”. Breeze used to lay in bed at age 4 and
belt out Elvis, Jerry Lee and Little Richard interspersed with
“Anchors Aweigh”! He now writes tunes about the Earth &
Environment
with heartfelt energy interspersed with a little hip gyration.
July 26- Derrik Jordan (aka SuperString Theory) will be
performing his world fusion improvisations on the electric 5 string
violin at Pliny Park on July 26 from 7-9pm. His music draws on
African, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, Asian and Indian sources as well
as his American roots. He has released two CDs under the name
SuperString Theory, the most recent one composed and recorded during
his trip to Senegal.
