BRATTLEBORO, VT, July 12 - Strange week, this one. I lost my dialup
Internet connection solid over the holiday weekend, with no one around
to help correct the problem. A few hours after my Internet connection
was restored, I lost my telephone line and, thus, I also re-lost my
dialup Internet connection. I no more than got my telephone service
again when I was knocked back offline by a truly wicked lightning
storm. (The wife of a gentleman replacing our regular mailman warned
us of this storm a few minutes in advance, and I am extremely lucky
she did.) After all this I worked like crazy to get sort of caught up
when FairPoint deliberately cut my telephone line. It was just a test
and I got my connection back soon enough, but I didn't know it would
work out this way when my line was cut. So I handled the dilemma in
the most obvious way possible. That's right, I blew up at the first
person I saw. That's the bad news. The good news is that at least
the guy I blew up at works for FairPoint. Next, I could not log into
the Yahoo Mail account attached to this Yahoo Group. This problem
goes back many years, and at least I knew from experience how to get
around it. Here I am, right?
After all this, I believe we may be back on track, if hopelessly
behind schedule. We'll make the best of the situation we face.
Meanwhile, I have learned that my modem could have been fried when I
lost my telephone line the first time. This newsletter could be as
dead as my telephone line was. My telephone line, I now know, took a
direct hit from a lightning bolt. Fortunately, I was offline and
unplugged at the time. So actually this is a happy ending of sorts.
I'm happy. And I'm listening to a really strange record right now.
Do you know of
. . . LOVEKRAFTY?
With a Providence-connected name like LoveKrafty, it is a shame that
Becky Chace, Mark Cutler, and Kip McCloud aren't on this record.
"Radi/o" which I imagine is intended to convey "radical input/output"
(hard to show it in black and white - the color, red, is actually part
of the title) is a mighty peculiar meeting of
. . . some hitherto unknown "Boston Sound" band
The Beatles/Beach Boys/Crosby Stills & Nash/Pink Floyd
and
. . . Michael Penn.
No women?
If you know LoveKrafty, I'd love to hear what you think of the "Rad
I/O" CD.
And if the LoveKrafty back cover does not bring Bosstown to mind,
you're not getting properly into the spirit of this, the 40th
anniversary of the Bosstown promotion.
Always strange to say, but the Champlain Valley of Vermont and upstate
New York enjoyed an exceptionally strong pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll
community. After playing LoveKrafty, I switched to the forthcoming
album by one of those very 1960s North Country bands,
. . . MIKE AND THE RAVENS.
I am an old guy, but I am tired of this oldness thing and I am
especially annoyed at the many, many acts from my early decades who
totally wimped out long ago.
So I put on the new Mike and the Ravens album and these guys don't
sound old and they don't sound wimpy: they sound like a classic band
from the 1960s golden era of North Country
. . . ROCK
. . . . . . AND
. . . . . . . . . ROLL.
What a relief! And what a treat!
"The Saxony Sessions" by Mike and the Ravens starts exactly where and
how it should: with a remake of "Roller Roller Rollerland." This cut
is named for one of the local hotspots of the 1960s.
Met my baby down at Rollerland
We were rocking it out to a real cool band
It felt so good when I held her hand
Rocking it out down at Rollerland
Roller Roller Roller Rollerland...
Another fascinating cut is "Once I Was a Dancing Bear." Oh yeah, now
I remember that guy. Mike the Dancing Bear.
And does this disc ever end strong with "I Wanna See You Dance" and
"Noisy Boys: Too Stupid for the Radio."
Too stupid for the radio. Right after the Rat, the punk-rock
headquarters in Boston's Kenmore Square, closed forever, some feller
in the crowd was quoted in print as saying on closing night something
to the effect of, "Here goes the last bastion of dumb." I'd love to
have that guy here right now grooving to "Too Stupid for the Radio."
When Boston's Thundertrain reunited, front-goodguy Cowboy Mach Bell
said something like "We don't have any plans to come back with a new
mature sound." Obviously either did The Ravens. Let's get Mach Bell
in, too, on "Noisy Boys: Too Stupid for the Radio."
If "The Saxony Sessions" by Mike and the Ravens is not enough to
restore one's faith in good old, straight-ahead, no-frills rock music,
I don't know what it would take. This is a little like Boston's The
Remains taking somewhere around 36 or 37 years between album releases
and getting the new disc started with "Don't Tell Me the Truth," the
best and most Remains-like studio track Barry and the Remains ever
recorded.
My dream is to learn to dance, find the most Rollerland-like rock
ballroom, and do a rock 'n' roll triple-jig with Nancita the Queen of
Garage Spirit to "Too Stupid for the Radio."
Will Shade, who I believe is mainly responsible for getting Mike and
the Ravens back out there with a new release, lately said this:
"They will be playing their first show in 46 years! Vermont's
greatest band finally returns..."

FAVORITE RECENTLY-HEARD RECORDS
<> We have received some terrific CDs in recent months. Most, but not
all, are new releases. It is an important interest for me to make a
list, complete or not, of my personal favorites out of these new arrivals.
I had gotten so far as to name "Autre Chose Live" by Willie Alexander
and the Confessions and "Hungrytown" by Hungrytown (Rebecca Hall and
Ken Anderson). But then last issue I got so busy that I simply forgot
to add any titles to my list. Those I would have added include a few
national and international titles: "In Black and White" by the Love Me
Nots (world-class garage rock), "Yours Truly" by Natalie MacMaster (if
this woman gets any better it will be frightening), "Hammersmith
Odeon, London '75" by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (this
totally replaces the live box set of long ago except for a few
individual cuts on the old set such as "Thunder Road"), and the
various artists collection, "Four Decades of Folk Rock" (my record
collection is VERY big, and Disc One of this box set would easily make
the short list of my very best albums).
Added to these, but with much clearer regional ties, are "Notes From
Elsewhere" by Peter Mulvey (he has released three or four classic
discs and, by now, has to be considered to be in the top tier of
American performing songwriters) and "Greetings From Area Code 207
Vol. 7" (nearly any fan of New England's music community ought to find
several personal favorites in this excellent, varied set).
What I may do is post what I have for a list each issue, as I add to
it over the next few weeks.
Here is the list I have so far:
Regional
Willie Alexander and the Confessions, "Autre Chose Live"
Hungrytown (Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson), "Hungrytown"
Peter Mulvey, "Notes From Elsewhere"
Various artists, "Greetings From Area Code 207 Vol. 7"
National/International
Love Me Nots, "In Black and White"
Natalie MacMaster, "Yours Truly"
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, "Hammersmith Odeon, London '75"
Various artists, "Four Decades of Folk Rock"
WE RECEIVE SO FEW RELEASES . by non-New England national and
international acts that this part of my list could possibly be
complete. I only have two or three more records to play. There is,
on the other hand, practically no chance the regional part of the list
is currently complete. There are a number of albums I would like to
hear again before naming them; but my MEMORY of these CDs is that they
really ought to make any recent-best list.

SPINNING IN THE NEMS CD PLAYER
Barenaked Ladies
"Talk to the Hand/Live in Michigan"
Fine album. Most BNL fans are going to want this disc, no questions
asked. "Live in Michigan" is a CD to hve. I mean, why were Bare
Naked Ladies fans on this side of the US-Canada line given Economic
Stimulus rebate checks for heaven sake! Buy this set. Get it over
with. Move it.
The CD (there's no way I'll get time to watch the DVD anytime soon)
makes for excellent listening. Still, I am left with one great
puzzle. Why is there no warning label? On the inside of the gatefold
jacket, aside from one guy wearing glasses and another guy wearing an
eyepatch, these laddies are pictured barenaked. Open up the jacket
and you will see what I mean.
(heh heh)
.
IT IS NOW AFTER 5 A.M. . Saturday. This has been easily among our
busiest weeks ever, on the one hand, and I have lost whole days of
online time, on the other, on account of a conspiracy of online and
dialup connection troubles. And lightning storms. So while I have
done more than scratch the surface of pulling together a newsletter
issue, it is not a lot more. I will work in as much additional
information as time permits, but basically this is an abbreviated
newsletter issue because a terrific amount of time has been lost to
technical difficulties.

LOUDON COUNTRY HALL JAMBOREE
Fantastic Local Music Television of the 1980s
Back in the musically-wonderful early 1980s, if you missed the Loudon
Country Hall Jamboree, you missed a brilliant success. The Jamboree
is one of my all-time favorite television music broadcasts. The show
did not last anywhere near long enough, but the memories live forever.
We received an e-mail from one of the main people behind this
wonderful program. Here is our exchange of messages.
"Saw your web article on Sleepy La Beef. I was the person who
recorded and edited the Loudon Country Hall shows. I also wrote and
sang the theme song. The hall was owned by June Cooper. Her
daughter, Sunday Miller, hosted the show.
"We shot live sets every other Sunday at the hall, June went through
the tapes and selected the songs to use, Sunday came into my studio in
Auburn, New Hampshire and did the intros for the bands, and I edited
it all together.
"The show aired on WMUR, Channel 9 out of Manchester, New Hampshire at
1:30 on Saturday afternoons. In it's day it was quite radical for an
independent production to do what we did. We actually had ratings on
a Saturday afternoon that rivaled those of WMUR's weeknight news and
competed well against WBZ's Red Sox Baseball in the summer.
"I don't have any of the shows. They belonged to June. Last I heard
she was still living in Hillsborough. I live in Moultonborough, New
Hampshire and own Corporate Media Services, a video news service and
work with the stations in Boston and New Hampshire.
"We had a lot of interesting people on the show. Jonathan Edwards,
Cub Coda are a couple I recall. I remember taping Sleepy's sessions.
We took a break that afternoon and turned the monitors to Channel 11
and watched Sleepy on Austin City Limits!"
SOURCE: Tom Bartlett, "Loudon Country Hall Jamboree," July 10, 2008.
SUNDAY MILLER: . I once made a list of those things in life that are
absolutely perfect, and Sunday Miller on "Loudon Country Hall
Jamboree" made my list!
. . . . .
"If you would be willing to give permission, I would like to include
the five paragraphs of your e-mail in our next newsletter which I will
mail tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
"Please let me know if this would be alright.
"I am including your e-mail below, complete, in case you would like to
look through it first.
"I loved that show and remember certain appearances quite well.
Jonathan Edwards, for instance, rocked a lot more than I would have
expected.
"It is the only time I actually SAW Preacher Jack.
"There were two Colt 45 bands in Massachusetts running simultaneously,
and Loudon Country Hall once featured the OTHER outfit. It was the
only time I ever heard them.
"Loudon Country Hall Jamboree had a lot of great moments, and those
were terrific times."
SOURCE: E-mail message, Alan Lewis (FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com)
to Tom Bartlett, July 11, 2008.
. . . . .
"You are welcome to include it (and this) in your next newsletter.
And thank you for your kind words about the show. It was an
interesting time in my life, and the connections I made led to my
present job. Here's a little more about the show.....
"Preacher Jack! Wow! I had forgotten about him! June knew all kinds
of performers! Cub Koda was renting her house in Newburyport! She
had formerly owned Trader Allen's Fifth Wheel, a truck stop in
Amsbury, Massachusetts. Sleepy La Beef was a friend who had played at
Trader Allen's!
"She sold Trader Allen's, but later began a Country Music radio show
that was recorded there. At one point she needed to insert new
commercials into the master tapes. I owned North Country Sounds
recording studio in Auburn, New Hampshire. She found me in the yellow
pages, had me do the editing, and later hired me to do the actual live
recording. A few years later she bought the Loudon Country Hall. I
was experimenting with video at the time, and she wanted to do a
weekly TV show similar to the radio show to promote the hall. She
sold some property and put up the money for the TV equipment, and off
we went in the best Andy Hardy style, making it up as we went along!
"Lighting? A bunch of fifteen dollar 500 watt quartz outdoor flood
lights did the trick. I had no experience in multicamera video, but
fortunately my friend Ron Wyman was (and still is) an extremely
talented camera operator. He gave me a crash course in directing. (I
had no idea that I was supposed to actually tell the camera people
what shots I wanted!) His friend Joe Bladja was the second camera,
and June's daughter Sunday Miller ran the third camera. Translation?
None of us but Ron had any idea of what we were doing! I directed
the live shooting. About the only thing going for me was that I was a
musician, and knew what worked and what didn't from a performance
standpoint. But the camera people gave me great shots to work with,
and I was able to get most of it onto the master tapes.
"So, not knowing it couldn't be done, we just did it. The first show
ran on Christmas day 1982(?) It was supposed to run an hour, but
equipment problems had postponed the first taping, and there was not
enough time to edit an entire hour. As it was, I was up all night the
night before Christmas Eve trying to make the editing machines work,
and it ended up as a half hour show. There was a little kid named
Joey who hung around the tapings, and the show ended with Joey and Cub
Koda duck walking in lock step across the stage doing Chuck Berry's
'Run Run Reindeer.' Cub was wailing away on lead guitar and Joey was
doing the same on air guitar with a little plastic guitar he had
brought with him! It was very, very cool!
"WMUR did the credit roll at the end of that first show for us. So
the show ended like the Soprano's! From a wild rocking Cub Koda to
dead silence and a black screen with nothing but the credits rolling
up the screen!
"About a month later it became a weekly show and ran for about a year.
We recorded every other Sunday, just taping 1/2 hour sets and editing
out the best songs later. We had 40,000 viewers every week at 1:30 on
a Saturday afternoon! Remember, WMUR in the early 80's was nothing
like the station it is today, so ratings like this were almost unheard
of, especially on a Saturday afternoon!
"Jonathan Edwards was working on a comeback and called us asking to be
on the show. He definitely blew the house away with his performance!
[He definitely blew me away, too. Edwards positively came to Loudon
Country Hall that day to ROCK. - Ed.] We had people from all over the
country asking about appearing on the show, including big name
Nashville stars like Ricky Scaggs.
"Unfortunately, at the time, Country Music was looked down on by a lot
of people, and the show's popularity didn't translate into advertising
dollars. The show went off the air in early 1984. June sold the Hall
a couple of years later. She now publishes a newspaper in
Hillsborough, New Hampshire. My contacts in the television industry
led me to create Corporate Media Services, and I live in
Moultonborough, New Hampshire.
"Anyway, thanks again for remembering us! It was fun to remember
those days! Send me a link to the newsletter when it goes out!"
SOURCE: Tom Bartlett, "Re: Loudon Country Hall Jamboree," July 10, 2008.
JONATHAN EDWARDS: I don't know about always, but at one time at least
Jonathan Edwards lived in or around Peterborough, New Hampshire. I
personally used to go to church (Quaker meeting) in the basement of
the Peterborough Town Library. This gives some idea how
close-together the world of New England popular music can be.

I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EDIT, with a light hand, this newsletter issue
down to the present point. But I am now frightfully out of time and
must send this "as is" or not at all. Procede with caution. Some of
my first-draft witticisms and other dangers may lurk ahead!

JESS TARDY
Tuesday Residency, Through July, at Precinct
A Woman surnamed "Tardy" who starts her fan newsletter with a
confession that she has been "tardy" in getting out the latest show
listings is one who is willing to take risks. In this spirit, here is
a big part of the latest mailing from songstress-songwriter Jess
Tardy. It may be worth mentioning that the first date she mentioned
is already past.
"Hope everyone had a great Fourth of July ... and ... speaking of
independence, what better way to celebrate your freedom than to stay
out late on a school night, while having a few cocktails and listening
to live local music? Perhaps you'll join me tonight at the first of
my Tuesday residency shows at Precinct (formerly Toast Lounge) in
Union Square. I'll also be there July 15th, 22nd, and 29th. I start
at 10 pm, there's no cover, and I'll be joined by a great band.
Tonight, it's Kimon Kirk, Michael Dinallo, and Gillian DeLear. Next
week, we'll be joined by Sam Carmichael and other special guests.
Precinct's kitchen is open late, and whips up great burgers, seafood,
and pasta. For more details on the venue (which still goes by 'Toast'
on its website ... confusing) go to

60) Alabama Getaway (Grateful Dead)
---
Both are rumoured, of course, and as the warning says, some of this
may be for downloadable content anyway, but neither list seems too
bad. There are some great songs, combined with a few unexpected
artists. There are also a couple of potential repeats from Guitar Hero
games (Off the top of my head, Holiday in Cambodia's in GH 3 and Carry
on My Wayward Son in in 2, though I'd love to play drums and/vocals on
that one, so I'm not complaining too too much).
"But AC/DC? Pinball Wizard? American Woman? Dinosaur Jr? The
Silversun Pickups? Pump It Up (Admittedly, I only like a few Elvis
Costello songs)? Psycho Killer? The Donnas? Social Distorion?
Lacuna Coil? Megadeath? Even Linkin Park and Disturbed will probably
be fun.
"There's a ton of good stuff, a bit of crap (Blink 182, Paramore,
Tenacious D come to mind), and some bands I either don't know enough
about to judge or simply don't care one way or another, but WOW."

multi-faceted PINE LEAF BOYS play host band this year with stellar
blues artist
ROBERT CRAY, the eclectic sounds of the DAVID BROMBERG QUARTET â€" a
band that ranges from bluegrass to Texas Swing to blues â€" and the kick
butt jumpin' piano boogie of MARCIA BALL who will arrive sporting her
new CD, Peace, Love and BBQ, which has been parked on the Top 40
Americana Chart for several weeks now. She will be joined on stage
for her
set by friends Joel Guzman, Johnny Nicholas, Steve Riley & others as the
Louisiana Texas Revue.
After wowing the crowd last year, former Roomful of Blues member
and Rhode Island native, JOHNNY NICHOLAS is back doing his own set with
his band, the TEXAS ALL STARS. Rhythm & Roots also welcomes back
contemporary blues artist and 3-time Grammy winner, KEB MO, who
graced the
festival stage in 2005, garnering many new fans with his appearance that
year. And recently added to the Friday
night lineup is none other than Rhode Island's own, PAUL GEREMIA, a
master of Texas fingerpicking and slide style guitar.
The Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco contingent includes the one-two
punch of NATHAN & THE ZYDECO CHA CHAS, the Cajun and zydeco swamp pop of
STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS, and the all-star supergroup comprised
of ED POULLARD, COREY LEDET, & PRESTON FRANK & Friends. STEVE RILEY and
company are celebrating 20 years as a band with their brand new 2-disc
retrospective set, the Best of Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys.
Zydeco/roots jam band, DONNA THE BUFFALO returns by popular demand.
There's
also the rockin' roots and mayhem of DAN HICKS & THE HOT LICKS, THE
WAYBACKS, and THE GOURDS on this year's bill plus many more.
Besides being named one of the Top 100 Events in North America by
the American Bus Association in 2007, the Rhythm & Roots Festival was
given the Starlight Award by the South County Tourism Council in
recognition of its contribution to the tourism of southern Rhode Island.
In addition to being renowned for its impressive lineup of artists,
Rhythm & Roots is also known for its wide array of gourmet food and
drink in a wonderfully festive setting, which includes the HOT TAMALE
BRASS BAND keeping patrons entertained in the eating area as well as
leading the kids' mardi gras parades on Saturday and Sunday.
Four music stages are featured with large dance floors at both the
Main Stage and Dance Pavilion. Dance lessons in the afternoon are
followed by packed evening dances to live Louisiana dance bands. The
Family Stage provides storytelling at its best along with nationally
known children's performers, mardi gras mask making workshops, and
evening movies plus the ever increasing Kids Cajun Academy instrument
learning program. The Workshop Stage has intimate music
demonstrations and interaction with artists.
A new feature at this year's Workshop Stage is COOKING WITH LINDZAY.
Patrons will learn to cook authentic "Loooziane style" cuisine with
none other than Lindzay Young from the Red Stick Ramblers. Lindzay
has been cooking up a storm since he was a kid and is excited about
passing on some of his culinary secrets to fellow food enthusiasts.
Critics have been quoted as saying that, "Rhythm & Roots is an
incredible experience, a perfectly organized, flawlessly run major
destination event that music fans from all over the country will be
drawn to…" So, if you're looking to "let the good times roll," the
Rhythm and Roots Festival in Charlestown, Rhode Island is the place on
Labor Day weekend.

EXCITING NEW ADDITION TO
UUCM BEATLE SHOW!
[MARBLEHEAD} As if the already stellar lineup for this year's
Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead's Beatle benefit wasn't good
enough, another top notch act has been added the cast of musicians
who will
be donating their time and energy to a special charity event for the
church and to fund musician workshops in the schools.
Headliner Antje Duvekot asked Boston's feistiest Beatles band, the
Nowheremen to back her up for the July 19th show at the UUCM. This
band has
played some interesting events since they first got together less than
two years ago. They played at Governor Patrick's Inaugural Ball, as
well as at Ringo Starr's Harvard Square art gallery opening. Each
Nowhere Man is a powerful singer capable of leading the song or
blending in
harmony. The quartet remains faithful to the Fab Four's concept of three
guitars up front with cuddly drummer in back. Absolutely no digital
gimmickry or taped backup is used. John Scotti of Lincoln and Ian Barber
of Lexington play guitars, and Hingham's Brendon Murray plays drums.
Bassist McGregor McGehee, winner of a recent Boston Music Award, lives in
Dover.
Others on the line up for this show include, Antje Duvekot, Chuck E.
Costa, Friction Farm, Terry Kitchen, Dan Hart, Julie Dougherty, Seth
Glier, and Lin Sprague.
All are welcome to come out on Saturday, July 19 to support the
Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead and to send some
musicians into
the schools to do special workshops this year..Tickets are available on
the church website:www.uumarblehead.org. or at the door. Adults: $20,
Children $10 or Family package: $45. Refreshments will be served
throughout the evening. Contributions can also be made out to UUCM
and sent
directly to the church at 28 Mugford Sreet, Marblehead, MA 01945.
Calendar / PSA:
An evening of Beatles covers done by a variety of acoustic
singer-songwriters from far and wide will be happening at the Unitarian
Universalist Church of Marblehead on Saturday, July 19. "All You
Need is Love"
features the talents of the amazing Antje Duvekot,, The Nowheremen, Chuck
E. Costa, Terry Kitchen, Friction Farm, Julie Dougherty, Seth Glier,
Dan Hart and Lin Sprague, Some proceeds of this concert will go
directly to a special fund to send musicians into the schools for
workshops
for children and teens. The UU Church of Marblehead is located at 28
Mugford Street, Marblehead, MA. For information, email concert
organizer, Kathy Sands-Boehmer at
