BRATTLEBORO, VT, July 19 - We send our warmest wishes for the best of
luck to singer-songwriter Lisa Martin. She seems to be a very fine
person. More than one ground exists right now for wishing Lisa good
luck. We believe she will know which one we have in mind.

Except for a single last-minute, ill-timed lightning storm, from a
technical point of view we had a far easier time this week than the
last one.

For some reason, Yahoo seems to have stopped dead in its tracks in its
project of replacing the wonderful old Yahoo Mail with its vastly
downgraded new Yahoo Mail Classic. The e-mail account, which is
attached to this Yahoo Group, is still the old, full-feature Yahoo
Mail Classic, whereas our e-mail news triage account, FredRemainsLost,
is the new, no-tech Yahoo Mail Classic that doesn't do much but that
Yahoo is still trying to promote as "improved." So our situation is
half and half: one of our main e-mail accounts is far more labor
intensive and time consuming than it was in the past, while this
account remains unchanged and is reasonably easy to use. But even if
Yahoo should destroy this e-mail account the way it has trashed most
others, it may not sink us. We have been offered a new alternative.
This just happened, and I haven't had a chance to try it yet. But the
offer extended to us holds out some reason for hope.

Music news keeps coming at us at a quick pace - exceptionally quick
for early and mid-summer, which has always been a slow time for us.
More than half the news items e-mailed to us are included in this
issue. The rest we could not fit in for no reason other than the lack
of time.

VANCE GILBERT
"Up on Rockfield"

<> Vance Gilbert has long performed on the folk coffeehouse circuit,
and he is famed for his humor. Evidently, though, the guy looked
inside and saw a 1970s rocker. Or so one might judge from "Up on
Rockfield," his forthcoming album.

Personally, I have only heard Gilbert here and there, so comparisons
to past efforts are difficult. Of those VG albums I have heard,
though, "Up on Rockfield" is definitely my favorite.

Amy Fairchild once said something about how she really liked being in
the singer-songwriter field because it allows an artist freedom to
draw inspiration from a lot of different directions. With this
forthcoming release, Vance Gilbert seems to be enjoying the same
artistic freedom. In the CD's booklet, in a brief intro to "Welcome
to Lovetown," Gilbert referenced a question of, what if John Hiatt
were to write a song with Louis Jordan and Prince.

My favorite cuts on "Rockfield" are the rockers, which draw on Vance
Gilbert strengths. He is best on solo vocals, he is best with a
strong beat, and his versatile, top-flight band capably supports both.

A good deal of interest in cellist Kristen Miller exists around the
region; and for her arranging and playing on "Up on Rockfield,"
Gilbert awarded her much deserved Most Valuable Player status. We
wish to add a plug for keyboardist Tom West who is often at the heart
of this album's characteristic sound. West contributed mightily to
this album's success.

For years, I have had the experience of listening to a new record,
hearing some great banjo picking, checking the musician credits, and
finding, once more, that the banjoist who delighted me was John Curtis
of Boston's old Pousette-Dart Band. Well, Curtis has done it again
with an appearance on "Up on Rockfield."

With luck, Vance Gilbert will give us a start-to-finish rocker next time.

Scroll down to the press release section for the official announcement
of "Up on Rockfield."

AIMEE MANN
"@#%&*! Smilers"

I also played the latest Aimee Mann album. There is no time to
comment more extensively than to say that this is classic Aimee Mann.
She still has a gift for accessible melodies and pop-rock
arrangements, and she remains unaffraid of exploring life's grim
sides. This is a very fine record.

PRESS RELEASES

<> The Nowheremen have been added to the UUCM Beatles Concert on July 19.

<> Rock Band downloads for the week of Monday, July 21.

<> Mike and the Ravens. It has been an amazing vacation. But after
taking four and a half decades off, Vermont's Mike and the Ravens are
thinking seriously of playing a show. VERY seriously. Read all about
it in the band's press release, which is copied below.

<> Johnny Barnes, "The MIT Murders: Death on the Internet."
Late-1970s Boston rocker Johnny Barnes has got a new book out, and the
title could make at least one of our readers nervous. Catch up on
Johnny Barnes and his crime-fiction career by scrolling down to his
press release about "Death on the Internet."

<> Vance Gilbert: Announcement of the release of his new album, "Up on
Rockfield."

<> Joan Baez to receive Spirit of Americana Free Speech Aware.

<> Official E3 Rock Band track list.

To me, it is very surprising how much Guitar Hero and Rock Band gaming
news there is. Games of this sort seem to be the main new way of
interesting young people in specific pieces of music, just like MTV in
the 1980s, Top 40 radio in the 1960s, and jukeboxes in an even earlier
age.

THREE DAY THRESHOLD
Once Bitten

There is nothing quite like performing for US soldiers on another
continent to put some bite in a band's music and to put a bite in the
banjo player.

"GOOD NEWS! THREE DAY THRESHOLD made it back safely from our tour for
the US troops stationed overseas in bases in Honduras. No one got
shot, kidnapped or got malaria, so we're calling it a success (though
Kier did get bitten by German Sheppard attack dog - no joke, there are
pics up on our facebook and myspace pages if you want to see more).

Stars of Musical Stage and Theatrical Screen
Coming to a CD Player Near You

"We will be performing a couple of special shows in what has been our
busiest July to date. As you know, we're currently in the studio
recording songs for our first full length record, 'Signs,' due out
this fall. Our thanks to all who have been part of the pre order
campaign. It is a continuing success. Also, Nicole and I just
attended the first screening of 'Where's the Music At' at the Bryant
in New York City. Three years ago we were each picked to perform in
this documentary film which features seven unsigned artists and
interviews with music industry folks. It has been submitted to many
of the indie film festivals and will hopefully be shown in independent
theaters near you soon (fingers crossed). You can check out the
trailer if you want to marvel at our witty repartee (!)

BANJO DAN AND THE MID-NITE PLOWBOYS
Trad Bluegrass Vermont-Style

"[D]on't forget Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys performing
[Saturday, July 26] at the grand opening of Town Hall Theater in
Middlebury. That's another gala event, with all kinds of music and
festivities. Check

McCoury."

It would be worth checking the website linked by Banjo Dan or check
the Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys site to confirm the date of
the Middlebury, Vermont Town Hall Theater grand opening. I took his
meaning to be Saturday, July 26.

DROPKICK MURPHYS
A Request for Help

"Just a quick shout out to see if any of you guys can help us track
down a copy of a commercial that's running on the TV at the moment.

"It's for Farmers Insurance, advertising their new identity theft
policy. We have been told by a couple of people that there is a
version of the ad with a song that sounds a bit like the Dropkick
Murphys but isn't us and another that is us, using our song, 'I'm
Shipping Up to Boston.' We're looking for a copy of the ad that has
the DKM song in it.

"It apparently ran during "The Late Show With David Letterman' on
Tuesday July 1st so if anyone has a copy of that episode taped or on
Tivo that would be super helpful too.

"We appreciate any assistance you can give us, please email our
manager if you have anything that might be helpful.

ART BELL
To the Radio Hall of Fame

Way, way back in time, before the Middle Ages, before the Dark Ages,
before Late Antiquity - I think we're talking the 1980s here - Art
Bell and his wife (sorry, I have forgotten her name) founded a radio
broadcast called "Coast to Coast A.M." about the paranormal.

George Noory, the current "Coast to Coast" host, announced in the
Thursday-Friday overnight that Art Bell has been voted into the Radio
Hall of Fame.

Art Bell is an eccentric's eccentric, and he is and always has been
perfect for this sort of programming. If asked, I, too, would have
voted for Bell's induction into the Radio Hall of Fame. This is a
much deserved honor.

GUNS N' ROSES
On Rock Band 2

"An excerpt from the New York Times. Keep in mind this isn't the
first such track released (Motley Crue's 'Saints of Los Angeles') or
the first announced (Metallica's yet unnamed single from their
upcoming record). However, the decade-plus gap does make this
somewhat newsworthy and interesting at that.

"'A decade and a half after releasing its previous album, Guns N'
Roses plans to put out a new song in September - on the video game
Rock Band 2. MTV expects to announce on Monday that the sequel to its
popular Rock Band game will include "Shackler's Revenge," a track from
the Guns N' Roses album that has been in the works for more than a
decade, said people familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of
anonymity because the arrangement has yet to be announced.

"'The inclusion of the song on a game suggests that the Guns N' Roses
album, 'Chinese Democracy,' will come out this fall, after years of
delays. Axl Rose, who has selected replacements for the other
original members, has said that the album is finished, but a release
date has not been announced.

"'MTV and Universal Music Group, Guns N' Roses' label, declined to
comment on the deal.

"'Guns N' Roses' plan to reintroduce its music to the public in a
video game underscores how important to the music business games have
become - especially Rock Band and Activision's Guitar Hero series,
which allow gamers to play along with songs on instrument-shaped
plastic controllers. Rock Band 2 will also include songs from marquee
acts like AC/DC and Rush; the game may also feature music by Elvis
Costello and Bob Dylan, according to a track listing leaked online.
Activision recently released a version of Guitar Hero dedicated to
Aerosmith, and a game based on Metallica is due next year.'"

BEATLES CONCERT
At the Unitarian Universalist Church
of Marblehead, Massachusetts
Saturday, July 19
The Nowheremen Added to the Bill

**Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead**

28 Mugford Street, Marblehead, Mass. | 781-631-1215

**The Nowheremen added to UUCM Beatle show on July 19th!**

**28 Mugford St., Marblehead**

**Saturday, July 19, 2008 | 7:00 pm**

**Buy your tickets online via the PayPal link on the concert page
<http://meandthee.org/lists/lt.php?id=ZxoGA1cOBw5MDAIYCwBQ>
**

As if the already stellar lineup for this year's Unitarian
Universalist Church of Marblehead's Beatle benefit wasn't good
enough, another top-notch act has been added to the cast of musicians
who will be donating their time and energy to a special charity event
for the church and to fund musician workshops in the schools.

Headliner Antje Duvekot asked Boston's feistiest Beatles band, The
Nowheremen, to back her up for the July 19th show at the UUCM. This
band has played some interesting events since they first got together
less than two years ago. They played at Governor Patrick's Inaugural
Ball, as well as at Ringo Starr's Harvard Square art gallery opening.
Each Nowhere Man is a powerful singer capable of leading the song or
blending in harmony. The quartet remains faithful to the Fab Four's
concept of three guitars up front with cuddly drummer in back.
Absolutely no digital gimmickry or taped backup is used. John Scotti
of Lincoln and Ian Barber of Lexington play guitars, and Hingham's
Brendon Murray plays drums. Bassist McGregor McGehee, winner of a
recent Boston Music Award, lives in Dover.

Others on the line up for this show include Chuck E. Costa, Friction
Farm, Terry Kitchen, Dan Hart, Julie Dougherty, Seth Glier, and Lin
Sprague.

All are welcome to come out on Saturday, July 19 to support the
Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead and to send some
musicians into the schools to do special workshops this year.
Refreshments will be served throughout the evening. In addition, the
Marblehead Chowder Company has donated gazpacho or chowder (depending
on whether we are experiencing a heat wave or a cold front on
Saturday), so you can plan on picking up a bit of dinner at the show
as well!

Tickets are available on the church website
<http://meandthee.org/lists/lt.php?id=ZxoGA1cOBw5MDAIYCwBQ>
or at the door. Adults: $20, Children: $10 or Family package: $45.
Contributions can also be made out to UUCM and sent directly to the
church at 28 Mugford Sreet, Marblehead, MA 01945.

Description: THE BAND THAT WASN'T THE BEATLES....They started
playing RAW Rock 'n' Roll when Eisenhower was President and broke up 2
years later. They never played together again. Until 46 years later.....

Bio:
Mike & The Ravens:
Mike Brassard (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) Bo Blodgett (lead
guitar) Steve Blodgett (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) Brian Lyford
(bass and backing vocals) Peter Young (drums)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Very few American rock ‘n’ roll bands from the ‘60s still
field their original lineup. Even fewer predate the Beatles. Even fewer
can claim to having never recorded a cover. And none can boast this
particular story, which even a Hollywood screenwriter would deem
implausible. Meet Mike & The Ravens!

In 1960, a quintet of Vermont teenagers started one of the first
rock ‘n’ roll bands in the Green Mountain State. The act formed
around the vocals talents of 16-year-old Mike Brassard and the
songwriting
skills of 15-year- old rhythm guitarist Steve Blodgett. With John
“Bo” Blodgett on lead guitar and Brian Lyford on bass along with
Peter
Young on drums, the boys initially called themselves Mike & The Throbs.
The band signed to Empire Records out of Plattsburgh, New York in the
spring of 1962. A name change was in order and seeing as how the Blodgett
brothers were of a literary bent, Poe’s “The Raven” piqued their
interest and voila, Mike & The Ravens emerged from their shell. They
stormed frat houses, lounges, barn dances and a legendary venue called
Rollerland, which figures into their story until this very day.

Three 45s were recorded over the next eight months although their
greatest song was never committed to wax at the time. The Empire singles
have since become collector’s items, fetching hundreds of dollars
apiece in some instances. The songs have shown up on many different
garage compilations in the last few years, most notably “Heart So Cold!
The North Country ‘60s Scene” and a Mike & The Ravens retrospective,
“Nevermore: Plattsburgh ‘62 & Beyond,” which included dozens of
unreleased originals from the ‘60s.

One night in between sets at Plattsburgh’s roller-skating rink,
Steve Blodgett authored an ode to the venue. Although they attempted to
record it the results weren’t deemed up to snuff. A year and a half
after the band’s demise their label mates, The Twiliters, recorded a
rip-snorting version of the song that has since become legend. A staple
of the garage underground, “Roller, Roller, Rollerland!” has since
been recorded by Untamed Youth for Norton Records as well as finding an
afterlife in a new century with contemporary bands like Los Angeles’
The Volcanics covering it in the States and Helsinki’s Them Bird
Things bringing it to Europe! But alas no Ravens version.

So, why haven’t you heard of these guys? In September 1962, Steve
Blodgett, Brian Lyford and Peter Young broke into the Community Church
in Stowe, Vermont at midnight. They proceeded to play a rock ‘n’
roll LP over the steeple PA system. The sounds of the Devil’s music
was heard eight miles away, according to police reports! The terrible
trio was jailed for this act, splitting the band asunder. Until now...

In 2005, the definitive Mike & The Ravens configuration reformed
and began recording their debut album. Within six months, lead singer
Mike Brassard fell victim to a debilitating disease that rendered him
speechless. Over the next year, he had to learn to talk again, but
finally
roared out of the gates with the finest vocal performances of the New
Millennium.

Captured on magnetic tape at The Saxony (a mythic venue in upstate
New York, where the Ravens made their Empire State debut in 1962), the
band was careful to avoid the pitfalls of middle-age. No middle-class,
middle-of-the-road Grandpa Rock for these birds. Indeed, the new album,
“Noisy Boys! The Saxony Sessions,” sounds like Howlin’ Wolf
fronting The Clash. They coughed up 12 originals " ensuring their track
record remained untarnished " that adhered to the spirit of Link Wray,
Gene Vincent and their original idols. And after nearly 50 years, Mike
& The Ravens finally claimed their teen anthem, “Roller, Roller,
Rollerland!” for themselves.

A Ruckus Caucus: Quotes About The Album

Great vocals... whacky guitar... a bit weird and wonderful...
unpredictable... it's great! - Eddie Phillips, guitarist for freakbeat
legends, The Creation

This is amazing... 21st Century rockabilly... I can't imagine Mike
& The Ravens possibly sounding this good back in the 60s. They're
better than before. Hats off to the friggen drummer! - Rick Brown, singer
for psychedelic myths, The Misunderstood

One of my favorite finds... I can't remember the last time I heard
that much energy in a recording from anyone, at any age. You've got to
hear these guys to believe them... Keep your eyes and ears open for
these guys - they give a whole new meaning to the term 60's punk! -
Performing Songwriter magazine

Oh, dear, what have you done to your melodic '60s sound? This is
dreadful... it sounds like a punk group with a load of noise! - Alan
Taylor, Dusty Springfield band member (Sorry Charlie...only the noisiest
boys get to be Ravens! ..... Mike)

Stunning... This is not "oldies but goodies," this is not retro,
this is not even what I'd call a reunion disc, this is rockers playing
hot shit rock 'n' roll, the music idiots used to call the Devil's music
because it scared them... Do not miss this one! - Ugly Things magazine

JOHNNY BARNES
"Dead on the Internet: The MIT Murders"
. . . or
"The MIT Murders: Dead on the Internet"

IF YOU WERE AROUND BOSTON circa 1980 and listening to the great local
music of that storied era in Boston rock, you will no doubt recall the
name, Johnny Barnes. These days, Barnes writes crime fiction. Here
is the press release for his latest production in this popular genre:

Take a look at the new mystery by Johnny Barnes.

One by one, a group of graduate students working at
MIT's Artificial Intelligence Lab are brutally murdered, staged, and set
adrift in the Charles River. The floating corpses are sent straight into
the heart of Boston by a sadistically warped serial killer seeking
control over the developement of human-like domestic robots.

The book's oddball Boston detective investigates cutting edge science
and mass marketed "living" robots. The players are made up of
society's underbelly of escorts, prostitutes, drug dealers, and the
sellers of Internet porn. This modern detective story is not for
children.

Unforgetable characters will amuse you while the story builds.
Questions of survival and the meaning of existence will be answered.
The exciting and explosive ending will thrill you.

VANCE GILBERT TO RELEASE HIS MOST REALIZED ALBUM YET, "UP ON
ROCKFIELD" ON DISISMYE MUSIC SEPTEMBER 23RD
[Gilbert is right, dat is his music.]

UP ON ROCKFIELD EXPLORES GILBERT'S INFLUENCES - FINDING HIM CHANNELLING
THE WRITING STYLES OF VAN MORRISON, JOHN HIATT, PRINCE, SHAWN COLVIN,
RAFFI, AL JARREAU, LYNYRD SKYNYRD & MORE

Vance Gilbert is set to release his most realized album yet, Up On
Rockfield on Dissismye Music September 23, 2008. Up On Rockfield finds
Gilbert exploring and unabashedly celebrating the influence various
famous songwriters and performers have had upon his writing. Each song
is penned by Gilbert as if he was co-writing with some of his musical
heroes. Who else but Vance Gilbert could pull off a concept project
such
as this?

"Up on Rockfield", the opening title track is a soulful call-to-arms
of a small community, reminiscent of mid-70's Van Morrison. Then
comes the rollicking country rock of "Welcome to Lovetown", joyously
sounding like John Hiatt enlisting a hand from Prince. And there is
the innocent and wise "Goodbye Pluto", written, says Gilbert, "as if
Shawn Colvin and Raffi were to write together." The lyrical
sensibility and jazz quartet approach of Tom Waits is reflected in
"Old Man's Advice", while the sparsely instrumented meditation
"Judge's House" was written after a spate of listening to Steve Earle
and Bruce Springsteen, and could readily be in the company of any of
the tunes on the latter's Nebraska. "Whatever Louise Wants" is a take
on what it would be like "if Richard Thompson was to write a song
about my dog..", while banjo and funk become stable mates in the story
that is "Sweetwater", sounding as if Al Jarreau and Lynyrd Skynyrd
were snowbound at a hotel together and decided to jam.

The lonesome "It'll Never Be Enough" is destined to be some great
country singer's quintessential album-ender, while "House Of Prayer"
is the only co-write on the album, between Vance and long-time friend
Lori McKenna. "Some Great Thing" is Vance's nod to the Gospel stylings
of Thomas A. Dorsey, and could easily be part of any religion's hymnal.

The album ends with the solo and aching "Sing Me Down", a subtle yet
scathing environmental policy indictment that leaves the listener
wondering if Bob Dylan was at the other end of the pen.

More on Vance and his current tour schedule below.

Contact me for a review copy, interview or more information.

Thanks!
JB

How does an established and preeminent acoustic artist like Vance
Gilbert follow up his feted cover album Angels, Castles, Covers (2006)
and his songwriting watermark Unfamiliar Moon (2005)? With "Up on
Rockfield," that's how!

the influence various famous songwriters and performers have had upon
his writing. Each song is penned by Gilbert as if he was co-writing
with some of his musical heroes. Who else but him could pull off a
concept project such as this and have both press and radio giddy with
anticipation?

Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's
when buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an
ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking 'em dead at open mics.
Once word got to New York about this Philadelphia-area born and
raised performer, Shawn Colvin invited Gilbert to be a special guest
on her Fat City tour. Gilbert took audiences across the country by
storm. "With the voice of an angel, the wit of a devil, and the guitar
playing of a god, it was enough to earn him that rarity: an encore
for an opener" wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in its review of a
show from that tour. Gilbert's three albums for the Rounder/Philo
label - Edgewise (1994), Fugitives (1995), and the celebrated,
arrestingly sparse Shaking Off Gravity (1998) - are all essential
additions to the American singer-songwriter collection. With guests
as varied as Tuck and Patti, Jonatha Brooke, Patty Larkin, Vinx, and
Jane Siberry, all three albums found significant niches on NAC (New
Adult Contemporary) and Non-Commercial A3 (Adult Album Alternative)
radio. These discs were followed by the self-released Somerville Live
(2000), lionized by the Boston Globe as the disc "young songwriters
should study the way law students cram for bar exams," and One Thru
Fourteen (2002), a stylistically varied offering that New York's Town
and Village called "lively, eclectic, electrifying and transcending."
Gilbert followed with Side Of The Road (2003), a duo album with Ellis
Paul, lauded as "haunting, artful, and lovely" by Boston Magazine and
nominated for a 2004 Boston Music Award. Unfamiliar Moon (2005) came
as an impressive continuation to this mostly original composition
discography. "The songwriter's most compelling work; literate,
heartfelt, rippling, emotionally resonant songs" raved the Boston
Globe, placing the album in its' Top 10 CDs of the year (#4). On
Angels, Castles, Covers, "Gilbert's choice of an album of covers seems
both fitting and fearless. He displays his vocal virtuosity with some
unexpected choices from the late 20th century songbook. From the
sounds of Motown, through the R&B of Al Green to classic Joni Mitchell
and Shawn Colvin. He makes each and every tune sound fresh and new."
writes Roberta Schwartz of FAME.

Finishing a year and a half as support for George Carlin is the most
recent chapter in Gilbert's varied and successful performance history,
leading up to the creation and recording of "Up on Rockfield."

Up On Rockfield is indeed Vance Gilbert's career-crowning achievement.
This tour de force of borrowed styles is classic Vance Gilbert
original songwriting at its most timeless, compelling best. Gilbert
unflinchingly renders blame and absolution, trapped hearts and
free-riders, class and station, uncertainty and resolution, the
spiritual and the visceral, the forever and the now, all side by side
in song. His is a presentation steeped in deep humanism and bravery,
stunning artistry and soul, and unbridled joy. No great surprise to
the learned acoustic listener. This is Vance Gilbert, after all.

JOAN BAEZ TO RECEIVE 'SPIRIT OF AMERICANA' FREE SPEECH AWARD
AT AMERICANA HONORS & AWARDS CEREMONY
Thurs., Sept. 18, 2008
Ryman Auditorium, Nashville

NASHVILLE, July 16, 2008 - The Americana Music Association is thrilled
to announce that cultural icon and seminal American recording artist
Joan Baez will receive the "Spirit of Americana" Free Speech Award at the
organization’s 7th Annual Honors and Awards ceremony on Thurs.,
September 18 at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium. Artist of the Year
nominee and previous “Spirit of Americana” recipient Steve Earle
will present the award. The honor recognizes and celebrates artists who
have ignited discussion and challenged the status quo through their music
and their actions. In addition to Earle, past recipients include
Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Mavis Staples, Judy Collins, and Charlie
Daniels.

Fifty years since she began her legendary residency at Boston’s famed
Club 47, Baez remains a musical force of nature whose influence is
incalculable - marching on the front line of the civil rights movement
with Martin Luther King, inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech
Republic, singing on the first Amnesty International tour and, just this
year, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his
90th birthday in London’s Hyde Park. She brought the Free Speech
Movement into the spotlight, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez,
organized resistance to the war in Southeast Asia, then forty years later
saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest war. Her earliest
recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular,
before she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in
1963 and
focused awareness on songwriters ranging from Woody Guthrie, Dylan,
Phil Ochs, Richard Fariña, and Tim Hardin, to
Kris Kristofferson and Mickey Newbury, to Dar Williams, Richard
Shindell, Steve Earle and many more.

In 2007, Baez received the Grammy's prestigious Lifetime Achievement
Award. Her first studio album in five years, Day After Tomorrow, produced
by Earle, is slated for release September 9.

The 9th Annual Americana Festival and Conference will offer seminars,
panels and networking opportunities at the Nashville Convention Center
by day, while each evening brings more than 80 stacked Americana
showcases. The capstone of the festival will take the form of the annual
Americana Music Association Honors and Awards, scheduled for
September 18 at
the historic Ryman Auditorium. Hosted by Jim Lauderdale and featuring
a band led by Buddy Miller, the ceremony will toast winners in six
member-voted categories and also bestow Lifetime Achievement Awards
on John
Hiatt, Jason and the Scorchers and longtime Austin City Limits
producer Terry Lickona in the categories of Songwriting, Performance and
Executive, respectively. Tickets are available at $45 for the Americana
Honors & Awards show at Ticketmaster and the Ryman Box office.

Showcase wristbands granting admission to all four evenings of live
music showcases are now available for only $35 via
www.americanamusic.org
and Grimey’s New and Preloved Music (1604 8th Ave. South,
Nashville). Registration for the Americana Music Festival &
Conference is $350
for AMA members and $450 for non-members until August 13. Fees will
increase after that date.
