BRATTLEBORO, VT, August 6 - This storm must cover one HUGE geographic
area. One of our local weather forecasters - I don't know how to
spell his name, but it is something like Steve Caparizzo - is far
better known for being the evening weatherman on an Albany, New York
television station. On Friday in a 4 p.m. news broadcast on one of
our local radio stations, Steve said that rain would break out way,
WAY ahead of the approaching storm.

Flash forward to Saturday's 5 a.m. radio national news broadcast. A
CBS News correspondent announced that the tropical storm (not quite
hurricane strength at this time, mostly a rain event) had just made
landfall near the North Carolina-South Carolina state line. A couple
minutes earlier, it started raining here in Vermont. And by the time
the CBS guy was announcing landfall, it started pouring here.

Do you know how far it is from the stateline between the Carolinas to
Brattleboro, Vermont? Really, REALLY far. This ought to give some
idea how massive this storm system is. Where is the trailing edge,
somewhere over Egypt?

CBS radio news had some beach boy talking about surfing off Long
Island. When a hurricane hits, "The People go one way ... WE go the
other." This is definitely true for surfers in Maine, where September
can be a fantastic month for surfing.

On the radio news, the one spot in New England where they said
tropical storm Hannah is headed was Rhode Island. Best of luck to our
friends in Providence and along the Ocean State's shore. Making
friends with a boat owner might be timely.

Though here in Brattleboro, Vermont, we just got a good soaking, the
main part of this storm is actually supposed to come through this
evening and tonight, making tonight an either/oar situation.

JERRY REED

The best country guitar finger-picker I ever heard was Maine-native
Lenny Breau. Though Breau was known as a jazz guitarist, to me he was
far better when he played country. Once when pulling together an
article about Lenny Breau, I took particular pleasure in being able to
quote two of the greats of country guitar picking, one of them being
Jerry Reed. It was extremely sad earlier this week to hear the news
on over-night radio that the great Jerry Reed had died. He was a
successful singer and recording artist, he was an accomplished
guitarist and songwriter, and he did his full share to make "Smokey
and the Bandit" one of the most popular movies of its day. Jerry Reed
will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

>

I swear that Elvis Presley had serious success recording and
performing a Jerry Reed song, though no title is coming to mind. Can
you name a Jerry Reed song that was big for Elvis?
.

WE RECEIVED AN UNCOMMONLY LARGE . . amount of e-mail this week. With
such a huge number of separate e-mails coming in, we were bound to
experience a few technical problems. Here are three that come to mind.

Meg Hutchinson's newsletter arrived blank. Zero content.

One problem is quite common but we had only one example this week, and
I don't recall which mailing it was. There is a character - probably
a dash or something like a dash - which often gets converted into a
question mark. This is bad business because, say, in show listings,
it makes every booking look unconfirmed. Careful which dash you
choose to use.

The Lonesome Brothers mailing had the strangest thing go wrong, though
this could be a one-time deal ... as Cole Porter said, just one of
those crazy things. It was as if whoever did the sending would type a
sentence and then lay on the space bar for a few minutes before typing
the next sentence. The Lonesome Brothers mailing was overwhelmed with
countless spaces. At first, I thought my computer had stalled, since
the cursor never seemed to get from Point A to Point B. But
eventually I caught on to what was going on. It seems likely there
had been a great disturbance in cyberspace just as the Lonesomes
clicked the "Send" button.

I check our own mailings on several different computer systems, and
the worst problem I normally see is unwanted line breaks. We can live
with it. I am not aware of bigger problems, though one never knows.

Checking "mass" mailings to make sure they come through okay to
diverse computer systems - say, Windows and Mac machines, the modern
Mozilla Firefox browser and the old Microsoft Internet Explorer - is a
really good idea.

SOURCE: Newbury Comics, "September 1 Newbury Comics Coupons and New
Releases," September 1, 2008.

RODNEY CROWELL, "SEX AND GASOLINE": . . Could this Rodney Crowell
title have to do with pouring gasoline on a fire?

JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, "LAST FLIGHT": . . We have received nothing about
the Jefferson Airplane's "Last Flight" album, but the basic idea
suggested by the title sounds interesting.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK: . . There has been talk of a new NKotB album.
This would appear to be it.

BRIAN WILSON: . . I wonder whether "That Lucky Old Sun" refers to the
Ray Charles record by the same name.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK

<> Rock Band issues: both recent and current. This is definitely not
a press release. But I am including it in or just before the press
release section because it is slightly long. For Rock Band/Guitar
Hero gaming fans, this could make for interesting reading.

<> Guitar Day With Brooks Williams, at Artspace, Greenfield,
Massachusetts, September 27, 2008.

<> "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition" box set. I will
never forget the time I asked my friend Margaret whether she liked
country music, and she said, "I like Johnny Cash." A deluxe reissue
of this classic album by the Man in Black ought to turn out to be one
of THE great country music events of the year.

<> Sonya Kitchell's new album, "This Storm," is in stores now.
.

I AM BOOKED SOLID ALL DAY TODAY, . . so this is all I have time to
compile. If you have use of a boat or you know how to swim, I'll see
you next week.

Meanwhile, here are allusions and references, made in haste, to items
it would have been great to copy here in some detail, had time permitted:

<> Albany, New York's Lark Fest 2008 looks quite interesting.

<> Boston's Girl Authority has a new album.

<> The Boston Babydolls have what sounds like really spiffy new
headquarters.

<> Check the Newbury Comics website for details of a Mission of Burma
in-store appearance.

<> Dwight Ritcher and Nicole Nelson are working hard on their
forthcoming album through September, with live shows being booked
thereafter.

ROCK BAND
Exports Fifty-Five of Fifty-Eight Tracks

"Check the following:

<> "Nominal fee of $4.99 (400 Microsoft points) required for export of
Rock Band 1 soundtrack to compensate music licensors for expanded use.
The following Rock Band disc tracks will not be available for export
into Rock Band 2: . . * 'Paranoid' as made famous by Black Sabbath, *
'Run to the Hills' as made famous by Iron Maiden, and "Enter Sandman"
by Metallica.
---
"I'm surprised by the fact that 'Sandman' is out, but 'Train Kept A
Rollin'' is in. Both are Guitar Hero 'Exclusives,' so I'd think if
one was out, the other would be.

"I'm disappointed by the removal of Paranoid and Run to the Hills, but
I'm hoping this is only because of future DLC that will include the
masters. This seems a longshot with Black Sabbath, but Maiden seems
like we might end up with the 'Rush' treatment."

BECKY CHACE

summer newsletters that this year was Brian's and my ten-year
anniversary. No, we aren't married but we've been musically married
for a decade now officially. We celebrated with our significants and
a martini in August. When we met I was 22. Wow! That seems like
forever ago. Here's to ten years of persistence and togetherness!"

THE PANDORAS

Boston rock band,

and you would be willing to share your information, please e-mail us

or convert this next thing into a conventional all-lower-case e-mail
address and use it for writing us.

Perhaps it might work better for members of The Pandoras to e-mail us.

Either is fine from our point of view.

Also, as far as I know, a telephone number for a member of the
Pandoras would be fine.

I have an e-mail friend who is a daughter of a Pandora, and she and I
are in current contact; but the addresses I have had for other band
members no longer work.

ROCK BAND
Recent and Current Issues

<> You already know about the issues with Rush's album. [It was not
available for release as downloadable content on the
previously-announced schedule. - Ed.] In its stead, [a] pack by a
band named "Locksley" was put up. The Locksley pack was available
through the XBox Live Marketplace as of Friday, but was not listed on
the Rock Band store. The significance there is that the Rock Band
store plays previews of various tracks - a great way to determine
whether or not you like a band. I finally found it today, though it
may have been up earlier. It was never listed in the new releases
section, so when I saw the new PAX pack up, I went and looked for it
under the track packs section.

Which brings me to part three. Two packs were announced for this
week, the PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) and Offspring packs. I had read
that the Offspring Pack had been changed to TBA, but at the time
couldn't find anything official to support that. However, it's not up
today, and the PAX pack is. I'd call that pretty official.

I'm betting a lot of this has to do with the fact that Rock Band 2 is
out in under two weeks now, and it may go away, but there have been a
lot of issues of late.

JOHNNY CASH
At Folsom Prison

"Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition" Features Exclusive
Documentary of Legendary Performance

<> January 13, 1968 has long been regarded as the day that Johnny Cash
recorded one of the greatest albums of all time, "At Folsom Prison."
Commemorating the 40th anniversary of this recording, "Johnny Cash at
Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition" features previously unreleased
materials from that epic day including a new documentary film with
exclusive footage from behind the walls of Folsom Prison. The
documentary examines the single most important day in the career of
the legendary Man in Black and the prison where it all took place.
This look at the historic Folsom Prison concert reveals a complex Cash
and re-establishes this album as one of the most important recordings
of the 20th Century.

As Folsom’s residents erupt in raucous response to Cash on stage,
this film’s compelling footage captures the unique yet undeniable
relationship of mutual respect he held with the inmates. This
camaraderie is
particularly evident in Cash’s performance of “Greystone
Chapel,” a song written by Folsom inmate Glen Sherley about the
facility’s
building of spiritual refuge.

The DVD also features unpublished images of Cash in the crowning
moment of his career, captured by the legendary rock and roll
photographer Jim Marshall, and new interviews with Merle Haggard,
Rosanne Cash, Marty Stuart, and former inmates who witnessed the concert.

"Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: Legacy Edition" is a two-disc, one-DVD
box set available at all physical and digital outlets starting October
14th through Columbia/Legacy.

Edition' Features Exclusive Documentary," September 4, 2008.

SONYA KITCHELL
New Album, "This Storm," in Stores Now

New Album "This Storm" In Stores Today

<> Sonya's newest release, "This Storm," is in stores today! This is
the first release since the critically-acclaimed Words Came Back To Me
(2006) and showcases Sonya's evolution into a sophisticated musician
and songwriter with something meaningful to say about the human
condition. Produced by Grammy Award-winner Malcolm Burn (Peter
Gabriel, Emmylou Harris), This Storm is an immediate and visceral
album packed with musical surprises, from the edgy, impassioned rock
of "Fire" to the country-indie twang of "Running" to the drifting,
textured alt-pop of "This Storm" and "Who Knows After All." Not
that fans of Words will be out of luck, either: tracks like "Walk
Away" and "Robin In The Snow" are quintessential acoustic
Kitchell. Please support Sonya and order your copy today!

Glowing Reviews For "This Storm"
“Now 19 years old, the Massachusetts-bred singer/songwriter is back
with This Storm, an accomplished effort that combines folk's searching
sentiments with pure pop bliss. Producer Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris)
wisely keeps the emphasis on Kitchell's voice, a smoky, expressive
instrument that she deploys confidently and with preternatural restraint.
Her subtlety adds intrigue to rock-infused cuts like “For Every Drop”
(even when she lets loose, there's the suggestion that she's holding
something back), but Kitchell is at her most devastating as a balladeer.
On the gorgeous “So Lonely,” her vocals are so high in the mix and
her delivery is so delicate that she could be confiding in your
ear.” - Paste Magazine

“The singer-songwriter’s angelic voice and sharp lyrics make this
versatile set of folk, rock and alternative songs a compelling listen.
One standout? “Here to There,” a country-tinged musing on the
meaning of life.” - People Magazine (3.5 stars out of 4)

This dusky-voiced 19-year-old garnered comparisons to Joss Stone and
Norah Jones with her 2006 debut. On the vibrant follow-up, Kitchell
expands her emotional repertoire, channeling a vulnerable PJ Harvey
on the
ballad "Who Knows After All" and sifting through painful memories on
"Fire." - Entertainment Weekly (Grade: A-)

Sonya Kitchell featuring The Slip: Tour Launches September 24th!
Sonya's tour, to launch Sept. 24, will be her biggest ever, playing
venues like the Bowery Ballroom in NYC, the Fox Theater in Boulder, and
the Independent in San Francisco. Acclaimed indie-rockers The Slip will
be Sonya's backing band (The Slip members Andrew and Brad Barr also
played on "This Storm"), and The Slip guitarist Brad Barr will open shows
with a set of material from his new solo album, "The Fall Apartment."
Visit www.sonyakitchell.com for the latest tour date info and for direct
links to buy tickets for each show.
