BRATTLEBORO, VT, September 13 - We received a phenomenal amount of
e-mail this week. There is no way time will permit us to do justice
to it all, but it is great to see that there is so much activity out
there. Though the news generally has treated 2008 as a down year, we
have found it to be very busy: almost without a let-up.

Unfortunately, the high level of energy and activity that we have
witnessed, starting in the late months of 2007, comes with one major
exception: attendance at live shows.

Musicians are finding ways to get their music out to fans, such things
as downloads of recorded tracks and the streaming of radio broadcasts
being a big help.

Many bands and individual artists are having real success selling
their CDs.

But...

Attendance is down at music halls, clubs, and coffeehouses. Bookers
are being more cautious. Many worthy artists are having trouble
getting gigs.

The World Wide Web is wonderful in a lot of ways. But there is a heck
of a lot we can do today without ever leaving our homes and without
ever seeing another human being. One can acquire and listen to lots
and lots of music without ever having to see, hear, or otherwise deal
with a musician, live in person.

So shows are sparsely attended, bookings grow less frequent, artists
get fewer bookings, and music rooms go out of business.

Who loses when all of these things happen? We do.

Recently this publication no more than put out a special issue,
notifying our readers that a really important New Hampshire listening
room, the Stone Church, was closing its doors in a matter of three or
four days, when we got news of very tough times at the Boston area's
Abbey Lounge. Live music alternatives in the town where I live,
Brattleboro, Vermont, are down sharply, which I am sure is true, too,
in many other places. This is real trouble.

According to national radio news broadcasts, neighborhood movie houses
and small town movie houses are seeing increasing business. Good for
them. As much as we all love music, probably no one reading this
newsletter thinks it is the ONLY thing that is important in the arts
and entertainment field. So when people are getting out to see films
and enjoying and benefiting from them, we are all for it.

But live music rooms are not going to stay in business simply because
we want them to. They need our support. It is not that they WILL NOT
stay open without us. It is that they CAN NOT stay open without us.

They need us, but we also need them.

The New England Music Scrapbook's readership is so highly dispersed
over a huge geographic area - all across the United States and
sprinkled, here and there, in other countries and on other continents
- that there is a real limit to what we can do to publicize music
events. This is a thing a mailing such as the Weekly Band E-Mail can
do far better than we ever could. But we have received requests to
post more show listings, and we are posting more now than we have done
in the past. If we all do our part, we all gain from it.

[This hurried newsletter issue is not a strong example of us posting
more show listings; but in general, it is a thing we have been doing
more. - Ed.]

If, on the other hand, we do not support live music rooms now when
they need our help, they are not going to be around for us later when
we need them.

And news about music is a lot more fun than news about club closings.

CHARLES RIVER VALLEY BOYS
"Live at the Y-Not" CD

<> One of the Charles River Valley Boys is at least semi-local to this
area. His name's John Cooke; and if Cooke is not the stuff of which
legends are made, we would be hard pressed to name anyone who is. He
is local in the sense that he graduated from the nearby Putney School
and he has maintained ties to that folkie institute. Not long ago, in
connection with a class reunion, his photographs were exhibited to
advantage at the old school. And at that time, as I recall, his
girlfriend was teaching at the Putney School. She may be teaching
there still.

Cooke told us by e-mail back around the time of the reunion that he
was looking to issue a live Charles River Valley Boys concert on CD.

Well, this space, this week, is all about anniversaries. Not long ago
I, myself, had one of those birthdays that result in one's age ending
with the number zero. Maria McLaughlin probably laughed herself silly
when she heard how old I am. But either way, as a gift, MM bought me
The Charles River Valley Boys "Live at the Y-Not."

This is a group that went through several great lineups, always
blessed to have banjoist Bob Siggins in their midst. But somehow they
managed to trick the great Joe Val, no doubt in a weak moment, into
joining the band. And Everett Alan Lilly, too. The guy is a classic
bluegrass Lilly, for heaven sake! And as if that isn't enough, he
even spells his middle name correctly. Obviously E.A. Lilly has got
his act together. This Cooke-Lilly-Siggins-Val Charles River Valley
Boys lineup would be a hard one to beat.

"Live at the Y-Not" was recorded, live no less, in Worcester, home of
Celtic great Bob Cousy. My favorite Charles River Valley Boys album
is "Beatle Country," but this live disc is going to give it a run for
its money.

From Waltham, Massachusetts [home base of Joe Val] to Havard Square to
Worcester ... this is terrific CRVB stuff.

Thanks to my dear e-friend Maria McLaughlin and also to John Cooke for
advance word of this must-have album.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK

<> Tom Rush: The New Album. I believe we may have subscribers whose
parents had never even heard of one another way, way back when Tom
Rush first started promising fans his then already overdue next studio
album. (Rush's "latest" studio release came out in 1974!) Shocking as
this is to say - is everybody sitting down? - there is bound to be
some fainting - Tom Rush has actually recorded his often-promised,
never-delivered next LP .. uh .. compact disque. Hearing is
believing, I know; but you can at least read about Tom Rush's
forthcoming CD below.

<> Eileen Rose. Tearing it up in Europe and on YouTube. The latest
news from Eileen Rose and the Holy Wreck.

<> Rock Band 2: The Latest Announcement. This posting came so late I
haven't had time to even glance through it; so whatever it says is a
total surprise.

<> Ron Marinick: Exhibit of His Paintings. This announcement was sent
by Mr. Curt.

<> Drum Rocker. Informational materials that accompanied a Drum
Rocker shipment notice. I remain totally surprised at the huge amount
of news there is having to do with rock 'n' roll related gaming.

<> Lark Fest, Albany, New York, Saturday, September 20. Lark Fest is
new to me - at least I don't recall seeing the name before. But this
year's event is actually billed as the 27th anniversary of Lark Fest.

GENERAL EDWARD FERRERO

<> One of the nineteenth-century singers I have been researching was
living, at the time of the 1880 federal census, in the same New York
City residence as Gen. Edward Ferrero. If you have strong interest in
the Civil War, you may know his name already, since the man took a
prominent part in a good many battles on the Union side of the
conflict. Ferrero was of a family of ballroom dance instructors.
After the war, he founded what became a well-known ballroom, Apollo
Hall. After his time there, this place was renovated and it became
known as the Apollo Theatre.

Years after this Apollo closed, a new venue was built and it was named
the Apollo Theatre after the original one. This second Apollo is the
club people of our generation or generations know about, from Ella
Fitzgerald getting her start there to it being the site where a
classic live James Brown album was recorded. If I remember right,
after Brown died his remains were taken to the Apollo for a memorial
service.

It seemed so strange to be stumbling upon the forerunner of a major
piece of rock 'n' roll history way, way back in the 1880 United States
Census. But General Ferrero, who I came across in the 1880 census,
was the person who originated the Apollo's name.

ABBEY LOUNGE
Help Needed To Keep Its Doors Open

From http://www.bostonherald.com/

Help Abbey Lounge Persevere
By Michael Marotta / Hotline
Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Michael Marotta writes about music, lifestyle and pop culture for the
Boston Herald. His daily Hotline section reports on nightlife news
around Boston.

<> The Abbey Lounge needs your help. The Inman Square, Cambridge,
dive bar and longtime local music stronghold may be forced to close
because of unpaid taxes.

"We're big-time in debt, and the tax man is knocking down the door,"
said Abbey booking agent Mike Feudale Monday. "It's pretty dire."

The Abbey has scheduled seven nights of benefit shows kicking off next
Sunday to raise money to pay a tax bill inherited from the club's
previous owners. The full lineup will be finalized Tuesday and posted
at abbeylounge.com and its MySpace [website] page; performers
committed so far include the Konks, the Curses and Acrobats. Feudale
said each night will feature five bands and a $12 cover.

"We're not going out without a fight," he said.

In addition to being "five figures" in debt, Feudale says the
140-capacity Abbey has also been hurt by a drop in attendance.

"The actual numbers have been on the decline in the last few years,"
he said. "People aren't supporting local live music like they used to."

Maria McLaughlin added this:

schedule at

It appears that more information will be added.

DARIEN BRAHMS
"Number 4" (CD, Cornmeal Records, 2008)
Release Party Video

<> "check out this video from my cd release party the other night.
thanks for coming! if you weren't there, here's a little taste of the
fun..."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0bj84shQzg

SOURCE: Darien Brahms, "You Tube Video," September 10, 2008.

<> WITH HER LATEST CD, . . "Number 4," Darien Brahms has a real winner
on her hands. We would welcome her back, except there is nothing on
the new record to give any idea that she has been away.

Brahms is really quite a wonder. She can do as much with simple
sounds as anyone I can name; and though it is great to hear her play
with other musicians, she has quite a full sound all by herself. She
can excell at straight-ahead rockers where rhythm is the main thing,
but she also has a gift for strong melodies and tuneful hooks. These
things come together to give her uncommon versatility.

My introduction to Darien Brahms was a notice, long ago, by a critic
who thought she all over the place to a fault. Brahms can mix it up a
lot, the way The Beatles did on their albums and even more like The
Rolling Stones. I have yet to find evidence that this diversity of
sounds hurt either of these acts. But for Darien Brahms, "Number 4"
is more focused, much like her best disc, "Little Bundle of Sugar."

I have not yet given "Number 4" the repeated listens that it will take
for it to really sink in, but it is already apparent that this record
will be a favorite.

It was quiet here when I first played "Number 4," and I noticed that
when I was out of the room the sound carried very nicely.

to a Radio Single

We have lost track of Jada, off and on, since the group scored a big

GERARD SCHWARZ

<> We have received notice that Gerard Schwarz has resigned from the
day-to-day musical directorship of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.
Schwarz has been a champion of music by American composers, many of
whom were and are based here in New England. I recall, for instance,
that Schwarz recorded works by organ virtuoso and composer Dudley
Buck. Buck was based in Brooklyn, New York for a very long time, and
he was also closely connected with the New England Conservatory of
Music. I single out Dudley Buck because he collaborated with people I
have researched, and he resided in Brooklyn quite near some of my
usual suspects. But over the years, Gerard Schwarz has promoted many
American composers and their works.

TOM RUSH
Forthcoming Album
(Believe it or not)

September 9, 2008

Gang,

<> Sorry for the long radio silence. Way too much going on for a
young fella like me to handle! We're currently in Hanover, New
Hampshire, testing the waters, and if everything lines up right we
just might move here. (Moving's so much fun I don't know why we don't
do it more often!) It's great to be back in the Northeast, for
however long!

At NAshville recording session 8/08 Tom with Emmylou Harris, Bonnie
Bramlett and Jim Rooney Nashville, August 2008

Now, my last studio album came out in 1974. Not wanting to dash
headlong into things like this, I've been working on a new project in
fits and starts ever since, so it comes as somewhat of a shock to my
system that I've just finished recording and mixing a CD's worth of
songs in Nashville, with my old friend Jim Rooney producing.

Jim and his crew are amazing to work with. Some of the best players
in the world, they show up at 10:00 AM and get right to work. Lunch
at 1:00, go home at 5:00. A bit like having a job, I would imagine.

And we have a great lineup of songs: some that folks have been asking
me to record for a while - What an Old Lover Knows, Drift Away, All a
Man Can Do - five brand new (to me) songs that were worked up just
before the sessions started - and some that I've been meaning to
record for a while but haven't gotten around to until now. I really
like the results, and I'm notoriously hard to please. It sounds a lot
like a Tom Rush record, only better. We don't have a title, sequence
or release date yet, but I'm hoping that, if the artwork and other
parts of the production schedule fall in place, we'll have CDs before
the end of the year and that Appleseed will be doing the general
release early in 2009.

Speaking of "back in the Northeast," there's a string of dates coming
up next week that I can actually drive to. What a treat! (Flying out
of Jackson Hole is no fun. They tell you, "If you die and go to
heaven you have to change in Denver." There's a song in there
somewhere.) These shows are very likely so sell out, so if you're
interested you might not want to dawdle! I'll hope to see you at one
or another.

Thursday the 11th in Ashburnham, MA, a fundraiser for the Ashburnham
Conservation Trust. A good time, a worthy cause.

Friday the 12th in Ogunquit, Maine, a return to Jonathan's to see my
Maine friends (and have some seafood that hasn't flown 2000 miles).

Saturday the 13th in Fall River, Massachusetts, back to the Narrows
Center for the Arts, one of my favorite stops.

Sunday the 14th at the Firehouse Center in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
Two shows, 3PM and 7PM. These guys make me work!

And, Monday the 15th at the Colonial Theater in Bethlehem, New
Hampshire. A new stop for me, and I'm very much looking forward to
it. There's always some topspin for me when I'm playing back home in
New Hampshire.

Things are sufficiently hectic right now that I won't be able to
respond to emails for a while, but that doesn't mean I don't
appreciate them.

All the best,

Tom Rush

EILEEN ROSE AND THE HOLY WRECK
Not Ready To Hang Up
Their Rock 'n' Roll Shoes

"Hello folks,

"Hope all is well in your worlds.

"Just a quick update as we have some exciting stuff happening today.

<> "Right now we're in Amsterdam, three weeks into our tour. It's
been fantastic so far. We've played a couple weeks in Italy, then a
week of shows in Sardinia. Our last gig there was in Porto Torres
outside in a beautiful piazza. For the first time ever, I managed to
trip while rushing back to the stage for an encore (hey, the band were
on fire, the crowd was fantastic and I was excited - grace abandoned
me). I didn't know you could hit your head THAT hard and still live.
However, it did give me my best rock and roll moment. We were joined
on stage by Andrea Parodi, Max La Rocca and Bobby Ruggiu for our rave
up version of Nessuno Mi Puo Giudicare which I belted out with blood
streaming down my face. Anyone have any pictures? Send them through.
I'd love to give one to my mom.

"Love at first sight between the Sardinians and the Holy Wreck, so
we're heading back there on September 27th for their big blues
festival. Bombafrau!

"Now the big news: Please check out this amazing new video for $20
Shoes. It's had nearly 200,000 hits on YouTube so far, hit #1 on
Youtube Japan, #10 Hong Kong, it's currently at #7 of most viewed
videos in the UK. It's only been out there since last Wednesday, so
we're very excited.

"If you'd like to help us keep up the momentum, we'd be most grateful.
So please feel free to send it on to your friends, add to your pages,
post comments, share it on groups, blogs - you know, all that fancy
modern stuff.

"And come on out to see us if you can. We head to the UK after Holland.
. . . . .

"Love to you all,

GUITAR HERO: AEROSMITH
Mini-Review of the Game

<> The Xbox Live Marketplace is listing the Guitar Hero: Aerosmith
demo up on the marketplace itself as new. I downloaded it last night
and cracked it open this morning. I'll note that the Rock Band Guitar
works with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, even the demo and even with the
upper frets. I'm more comfortable playing those frets (The "solo
buttons") since I injured my shoulder, so I'm happy to see that they
work.

Not being a complete newbie to the genre, I tried Quickplay on Hard.
The only options are Quickplay and Multiplayer, and since I lack a
partner to play second fiddle to my Joe Perry, I'm limited to the
Quickplay's five songs. Three of them are Aerosmith (Well, one is Run
DMC feat. Aerosmith, but you get the point): "Walk This Way," "Sweet
Emotion," and "Dream On." The other two are Lenny Kravtiz' "Always on
the Run," Featuring Slash and "I Hate Myself For Loving You" By Joan Jett.

Forget about the other two. I'm in it for the 'Smith content. I
started off with "Dream On."

The visuals are pretty good. The characters on screen are reasonable
facsimiles of Aerosmith. The portions during which I paid attention
to the characters and not the notes, the lips were properly synced,
and most of the animations were slick. The 9 Lives set is pretty cool
looking, to boot. This is not just a cheap "cash in" game.

Two things irked me out of the box: The first is that this game (at
least the demo) is QUIET QUIET QUIET compared to the other games I've
played on the 360. I recently connected my 360 up to my surround
sound unit, and games on it are literally twice as loud as movies and
cable on it. In anticipation, I cranked the volume way back. After
barely hearing "Dream On," I cranked it up for "Walk This Way," And
then again for "Sweet Emotion."

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith - The game you can play at 2 AM without the
neighbors complaining.

The other problem was that I had trouble seeing the yellow notes
against the fret board. It could simply be that I'm used to Rock
Band, but the problem got worse with Hammer On/Pull Off notes, where
the outlines become white.

A big issue with Neversoft's previous Guitar Hero game was the
charting of various songs. Fans complained about overcharting, which
does happen at points. I haven't played on Expert, but it looks like
their second attempt is much better. Hammer Ons are still very
forgiving, which can make long strings of them a lot easier than even
the "strumming optional" solos in Rock Band.

The most important element is that the game is definitely fun, though
quite possibly not worth the 60 dollar asking price. It's slick, and
the volume of Aerosmith songs will make or break the game for a lot of
people. If you love Aerosmith, this might mitigate the cost per song.

If you don't like Aerosmith, the volume of Aerosmith tracks is almost
certainly a dealbreaker. I've personally got this game dog-eared for
the future, when I can pick it up for less than 30 bucks. There is
almost certainly more to enjoy in career mode.

RON MARINICK
Exhibit of His Paintings
This Announcement Sent by Mr. Curt

Howdy Family & Friends:

<> A bevy of bouquets to my long-time friend and musical comrade, Ron
Marinick, who is currently exhibiting his incredible paintings at
Emack and Bolio's in Roslindale Village [in Massachusetts]. He has
been quite active over the past six years, slowly developing a unique
style of artistry that has ventured from realism to surrealism,
employing a vision of content and form that truly defies
categorization or explanation. The current show focuses on colorfully
exciting canvases of "pinstriped chaos" and "floating molecular blobs"
[my viewpoint (- Mr. C.)]. Definitely worth a visit to admire whilst
sipping some cool beverage or nibbling one of their tasty treats.
Hope you enjoy!!!

Also, I can't resist from giving you a sampling of the new Pastiche
material we've been working on for the past few years. [An MP3 was
attached to Mr. C's original message.] Ron, Ken, and myself have
spent quite a bit of time shaping ideas into some fine songs and
instrumentals. Several sessions recorded with Ray Boy Fernandes and
Doctor X (Tim Casey) have brought forth an album due later this fall.

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
.

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or
location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise
confirming details.
