BRATTLEBORO, VT, October 4 - Last weekend, I had family for company.
The records we played were mostly, but not exclusively, new ones by
New England-connected acts. Would you like to know which record made
the biggest hit?

- - - "Watch the Sky" by Patty Larkin.

With any luck, many of our readers got a look at those one- and
two-word excerpts from "Watch the Sky" reviews at the top of the Patty
Larkin item last issue. Clearly a lot of critics and fans alike
really appreciate Larkin's new classic album. I certainly do.

As for this present newsletter issue, time has definitely not been on
my side. I have run late working on it in an attempt to fit in as
many items as possible, without working on it too long and mailing it
TOO late, since a few items posted here speak of events of today.

Much I would have liked to include in this issue is missing, sad to
say, but timeliness is important, too.

NOAM WEINSTEIN
His First "45" Ready To Download

"Planet" b/w "Hold Still"
- - or
"Hold Still, Planet!"

<> "Remember how in the olden days - when men were men, and lasers
cost a nickel - artists used to release two-sided singles, with an
A-Side containing the latest radio hit and a B-Side containing an
obscure track that was discovered only by the most sophisticated fans
with the best grasp of three-dimensional objects?

"Well, I remember, and in honor of the fundamentally strong American
nonprofit sector, I'm launching a new project today, featuring songs
recorded in my home studio, available as free MP3 singles. I'm hoping
what they'll lack in studio fidelity and collaborative musicianship
they will more than make up for in strict adherence to the MP3
compression protocol.

"I've just completed the first one, 'Planet' (B-Side: 'Hold Still').
It is now available on my website:

Hope you enjoy it...."

SONGWRITER SESSIONS: NEW LOCATION
Vanilla Bean
Pomfret, Connecticut

Passages from Lisa Martin's mailings, which we have posted here, have
made occasional references to her Songwriter Sessions series. Here is
a recent update:

"Exciting news about Songwriter Sessions:

<> "Tonight is the last show at Udderly Delicious. We have outgrown
the space and are moving to another venue about 15 miles away in
Pomfret, Connecticut. The Vanilla Bean is a wonderful restaurant and
bistro and well renowned for featuring live music from national and
regional artists. Capacity is 75, so there'll be plenty of seating
there. We begin there on November 13th and will meet on the second
Thursday of every month going forward. Please pass the word. My
sincere thanks to Udderly Delicious for hosting us this year! For
current info visit the website at

INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING COMPETITION
New Music Video Category

"New Category For 2008:

<> "(ISC) has added a brand new Music Video category this year and has
solicited many high-profile judges in the music video arena to judge
the entries, including Amy Doyle (Sr. VP of Music and Talent, MTV);
Rick Krim (Executive VP Talent and Programming, VH1); and more. This
is your chance to get your video seen by the industry executives who
actually make the decisions about which videos get played."

SOURCE: International Songwriting Competition, "Only Three Weeks Until
ISC Deadline on October 15th," September 29, 2008.

I AM PERSONALLY NOT TOTALLY CLEAR . . on what a Music Video win would
say about the quality of an artist's songwriting; but this is a very
big contest, and the new category gives entrants another chance to win.

the Xbox 360, PlayStation, Wii and PlayStation 2.

Q: What is MTV Games/Harmonix's stance on standalone band games?

A: Our goal is to give fans the most diverse and largest selection of
music possible through the Rock Band platform. While signing exclusive
artists deals are not a priority for us, when presented with the
opportunity to work with legendary artists like AC/DC and make Rock
Band a part of their global marketing campaign, a term of exclusivity
naturally comes into play based on the substantial investment of money
and resources required. It was an honor to be selected by AC/DC as
their video game platform, and to take part in AC/DC's and Columbia's
global plan for the release of their new album and DVD. We are
thrilled to be the first to present these revered songs in interactive
form exclusively on the Rock Band platform.

Q: Will there be any tie-ins with AC/DC's new album?

A: AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack follows the release of AC/DC's
first album of all-new material in eight years. The album, "Black
Ice," features 15 new tracks from brothers Angus and Malcolm Young,
Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd. "Rock 'n' Roll Train,"
the album's first single, was released on August 28. "Black Ice" will
also be available in the US exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club
retail locations and Web sites Oct. 20 for $11.88, as well as on the
band's Web site, www.acdc.com. In addition, there will be two AC/DC
pop up stores that are going up in NY and LA as part of this
partnership with MTV and Wal-Mart to promote AC/DC.

Q: What is Wal-Mart and Sony / Columbia's role in this deal?

A: Sony / Columbia Records is Harmonix & MTV Games' partner in
bringing AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack and the set list from their
legendary live concert performances worldwide this November. Wal-Mart
is our exclusive retail partner in the US to bring AC/DC LIVE: Rock
Band Track Pack – available at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club retail
locations and Web sites beginning this November.

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...

confirming details.
