BRATTLEBORO, VT, November 8 - It is hard to imagine how this possibly
could have happened, but somehow we have managed to work our way up to
Issue 300 of this imcomparable newsletter. Yipee!
For the third week in a row, we have received an uncommonly large
number of late-arriving news e-mails. This is a situation we
absolutely cannot manage. There are just not enough hours available
toward the end of the week for us to even look through, much less
actually use, so much last-minute news.
So I judged the Friday and late Thursday arrivals by their subject
lines; and only one, written by Kristin of Sometymes Why, looked
especially appealing.
.
LAST-MINUTE NOTE
I have a couple more hours I had planned to devote to this newsletter.
This is a decent amount of available time at the present point in the
process. But for some reason, the Yahoo Mail account, which I use for
compiling each issue, is stalling repeatedly and wasting WAY too much
time. It is really frustrating. Reluctantly, I am going to send this
issue as is. There is material here that might have gotten edited out
and there are definitely interesting news items that would have gotten
added in. There is also a general smoothing out that I would have
tried for under normal circumstances. But this persistent stalling
has gotten to me badly and I am going to switch to some other project
- ANY other project - that does not rely on Yahoo Mail. I will try to
make use next week of material left over from this week which is then
still timely.
.
RECENT RECORDS
Popular in Our Circle
When playing records for visitors or loaning them out to people I
know, I ask which ones the guest listeners like best. Two records
lately have gotten great responses. "Clementine," an album of early
American songs by Merrie Amsterburg, is a real classic; and I am glad
that family and friends enjoy it as much as I do. There is much
beautiful music as well as much American history to be found on
"Clementine."
A relative loaned me "Shotgun Singer" by Kris Delmhorst. I,
personally, have not yet heard this disc. But those who have played
our loaner copy consider it to be her best album to date. This is
going some, since Delmhorst's latest albums have been true gems.
Give Merrie Amsterburg's "Clementine" and Kris Delmhorst's "Shotgun
Singer" a listen if you can, would you? Each, I believe, is well
worth giving a chance.
[Going entirely on memory, it seems to me that Kris Delmhorst may be
part of a big show this very night (Saturday) at the Somerville
Theatre. Check me on this if hearing KD live interests you. - Ed.]
On an international plane, we consulted a dyed-in-the-wool Queen fan about
: : : QUEEN/PAUL RODGERS-Cosmos Rocks-$11.88
which was among last issue's excerpts from the Newbury Comics new
releases list. He was quick to express his belief that this album is
not a true Queen effort. Otherwise, he enthusiastically gave the
record high marks and singled out Queen guitarist Brian May's
considerable contributions.
.
ELECTION RESULTS
From my point of view, there was a lot to like in the election
results. What was particularly appealing was the large voter turnout
to be seen. I voted a few days early at our Town Clerk's Office, and
there were a good number of other voters there at the same time: late
morning. Twenty-three percent of all eligible voters here voted
early. There are elections, such as primaries, when there are not as
many as twenty-three percent who vote at all. On election day, I was
out jogging and ran by our polling place. City folk might marvel at
this, but we have exactly one location in this town to vote. And the
crowd there was VERY impressive.
Some of you may know one of the media people who covered the election
results locally. His name is Steve West, and he was an 80s/90s Boston
rocker. His band (sorry to say I have forgotten the name) competed in
the WBCN Rock 'n' Roll Rumble in the early 1990s. Our local reporting
of the presidential results had one MAJOR turning point, and only
West, of the people on air, seemed to catch it. It was the point at
which the networks projected Obama to be the winner in Pennsylvania.
While everyone else was looking to see what else was happening or what
other news was coming next, West kept saying such things as:
Really?!
Really?!
It seems to me this is important.
Earlier, West had predicted that Obama would carry Pennsylvania, but
he thought the vote would be close enough to cause the outcome to be
unknown until a late hour. This moment in the election coverage was a
striking piece of listening matter on a special edition of
Brattleboro, Vermont radio station WKVT-AM's "Live and Local" broadcast.
Our wishes for the best of luck go out to President-Elect Barack Obama
and to everyone who will be governing at this difficult time.
Just as a matter of personal opinion, it seems to me that Democrat
Harry Reid errs if reports are true that he wants to discipline Joe
Lieberman for supporting the Republican presidential nominee, John
McCain. McCain is a good man, and campaigning for him was hardly an
outrageous thing to do. Lieberman said he did what he thought was
best for the country. What reason is there to not take him at his
word? I, personally, am not aware of any and seriously doubt that
Obama, the candidate Lieberman opposed, holds any hard feelings
against him. This matter is not only about Lieberman: it affects our
fellow New Englanders in Connecticut who voted to keep Lieberman in
office. The Democratic Party has a long history of inclusiveness, and
this seems like an ill-advised occasion for taking it in a different
direction.

variety and includes solid artists. So, some good seems to have come
from this week's releases.

YAHOO NEWS HEADLINE
Friday Afternoon
: : : What are the five most scientifically
: : : plausible sci-fi movies?
<> I have heard past discussions of the poor science or non-science
presented by major science fiction motion pictures, so it is great to
see a headline representing an attempt to find what is good in some of
these films. Scenes in a couple comic sci-fi movies have been on my
mind lately. One film is a sentimental favorite, "The Brother From
Another Planet." Another flick which has lately been called to mind
is "Spaceballs." While waiting for a public building to open, I have
been watching a renovation crew working on a building across the
street. One of the crew has fit into his movements around the work
site certain semi-acrobatic frills. Dark Helmet's line in
"Spaceballs" keeps running through my head: "Too bad for you this
isn't Wide World of Sports."
.
"NETWORK" FILM
"Not Gonna Take It Anymore" Rant
<> George Noory is the weeknight host of what purports to be the
worldwide Number One overnight talk radio broadcast, "Coast to Coast
AM." Noory is second to none in his love for the "mad as hell" rage
monologue in the film, "Network." He played the soundtrack of that
part of the movie on air recently, and it really is a film classic.
If you get a chance to hear it again anytime soon, do it. This would
be my advice anyway.

YAHOO NEWS LEAD HEADLINE
Friday Afternoon and Evening
: : : Obama calls for swift action
: : : on economy (AP)
It is my understanding that many well-informed and seasoned observers
of the markets - the lending, real estate, and stock markets, in the
present instance - believe that the swiftness of government's response
to great economic troubles is as important as the strength of that
response. If they are right, as I think they may be, Obama's call for
quick action ought to be heeded.

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
