BRATTLEBORO, VT, November 15, 2008 - For receiving news e-mails
containing information that is apropos to this newsletter, this has
been by far the busiest week we have experienced in our nearly six
years of existence (six years in February). No other week that comes
to mind has been so much as remotely close to this one. If you have a
theory as to why there would be such an information explosion at this
particular time, I would love to hear it. Please write us by way of
: : : FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com
but after turning this into a conventional, all-lower-case e-mail address.
Maine singer-songwriter David Mallett has referred to a certain time
as the classic period in country music. Many of the country
songwriters he grew up on and admires came to prominence at this time.
An irony is that country music was practically crippled,
commercially, during this classic period which followed the phenomenal
success of Elvis Presley. Many people who otherwise might have been
country fans wanted, instead, to hear and play rockabilly music. C&W
tours were cut way, way back. Most country records did not sell well.
I have no idea how country music radio fared, though my hometown
stations switched, one at a time, from C&W to rock 'n' roll. Maybe
the same happened nationally. As I see it, country musicians fought
back with some really exceptional songwriting. I wonder whether the
mega-blast of promotional e-mails we received this week may be an
example of both the New England scene and the national scene fighting
back against economic news that, though still mixed, is tilting very
heavily to the down side.
Whether or not this is a solid theory for explaining a week that, to
our experience, is unprecedented, clearly we are in the midst of a
most impressive high level of activity out there.
Promoters and bookers are pulling together innovative shows. Records
are being made with loving care, at least by independent and
small-label artists. Press releases, announcements, and fan mailings
are going out in a rush. Benefit programs are being organized that
would be a delight to attend for the cause, for the quality of the
performers, or both. Recordings are being posted and downloaded at
bandwidth-busting rates...
Can this great rush of activity last? Gee, it would be hard to
imagine. But even if this is just one giant thrash, it is still
totally amazing.
For better or worse, I decided, after realizing that something
extraordinary is going on, to look through all our mail. And I -
ALMOST - made it. This, unfortunately, leaves me very little time for
compiling and posting the HUGE amount of interesting and relevant
material we received. But it seems to me most important to experience
what a tremendous amount of activity is upon us and then pass along as
much of it as a dwindling allotment of time permits.
I will work as fast as I can, but do take into account that what you
see here really is like the tip of an iceberg.
This has been a
: : : super
: : : : : : busy
: : : : : : : : : week.
And a VERY encouraging week. An upswing may be starting.

VANCE GILBERT AND JEFFREY GAINES
<> Two news e-mails I have come to so far, instead of breaking up in
one of the usual ways kind of caved in on themselves. One was Lisa
Martin's newsletter, which I was able to use without any trouble
because the information in question was duplicated in different
sections of her letter so I was able to check details in one item
against details in the other.
I am a little less sure of the Vance Gilbert piece, so it would be a
good idea to check me on this. But I believe Gilbert has a big show
tonight (Saturday night) at the Regent Theatre in Arlington,
Massachusetts, with a very special guest, Jeffrey Gaines. We know
people who are HUGE Vance Gilbert fans, based in large part on his
comic abilities, and others who are equally big Jeffrey Gaines fans,
so this could be a great show to catch.
Vance Gilbert is much more of a rocker than I previously realized.
His latest album is likely to turn out to be an intriguing
transitional affair as his career develops further. Gilbert is at his
musical best as a solo vocalist, and any quest for his inner rock star
is likely to take him in a rewarding direction.

ROCK BAND
AC/DC Live Track Pack Review
We have a review of the new AC/DC live track pack release placed, on
the strength of its length, down below in this newsletter issue.
We receive some correspondence regarding music-oriented computer
games, and this piece might have added appeal because of the sustained
popularity of the band, AC/DC.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK
<> This week we received our fair share of press releases of varying
degrees of relevance to this newsletter. The only true press releases
which are posted below, though, are one concerning the rock 'n' roll
computer game, "Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades," and a Rock Band Forum
posting about current downloadable-content releases including a
Mission of Burma three-pack.

WE'RE OUTTA HERE
As the collective philosopher known as The Doors noted,
: : : The clock says it's time to go...
We have lots more material and I could do a little more work on this
issue. But timeliness is important, too, and we have items here that
pertain to events tonight, which is now just a very few hours away.
So it is best to get this missive sent.
With luck, more next week...

LISA MARTIN WITH CONNECTICUT NATIVE KATY KEIFER

MELISSA RICH MULCAHY BENEFIT
<> There was a benefit program last evening in honor of Melissa Rich
Mulcahy, who died unexpectedly in September. We received several
announcements of the concert. None of them said much about her except
that she was a friend of the musicians of the Pioneer Valley of
western Massachusetts. Since the announcements also included a
Connecticut address, and given her last name, I am assuming she was
connected with the popular 1980s Connecticut band, Miracle Legion, but
I don't know for sure.
Only one of the announcements, I believe, noted that the show would
include a reunion of the original lineup of Dinosaur Jr., so it seems
likely this feature was booked late.
Judging from the acts on this concert's bill, it is apparent that
Melissa Rich Mulcahy had very talented friends and a lot of them.
RIP.

AC/DC LIVE TRACK PACK
For the XBox 360
<> When it comes to the Rock 'N' Roll fantasy, few bands come higher
on the ticket than AC/DC. Certainly, it would be easy to name a few,
but it's no wonder so many companies have courted AC/DC for various
services, including Digital Distribution and rhythm music games. They
were a big portion of Harmonix's advertisement for Rock Band 2 with
the track "Let There Be Rock" featured in most of the TV spots, and
now they return with another dose in the first artist specific disc
for the Rock Band platform.
The disc, which contains the 18 tracks from their "Live at Donnington"
album, functions as both a stand-alone disc and an actual track pack
for either Rock Band or Rock Band 2: Anyone who has purchased the
disc new gets a code which they can redeem to download the full set to
their Hard Drive and add to either game. This requires an internet
connection and around 500 MB of disk space but is otherwise free. The
disc itself features a feature-limited version of the Rock Band
environment. There is no character generation, no way to use your
characters from Rock Band, and no customization of instruments or
bandmates. There are no AC/DC specific elements to any of the above
(And aside from the title screen and a couple of new load screens,
there's nothing else). Much like the regular titles, the Artist lends
little more than their music.
The set itself, the selling point, is exceptional and easily
represents the best of AC/DC (conveniently sidestepping their "no
greatest hits, no singles" policy) in virtually pristine audio.
Operating my 360 through a 5.1 DTS unit, there were certain notes
where the volume was much lower than it should have been or the note
track was asking me to hit notes I couldn't hear at all. This may not
be present in a stereo configuration. This disparity is very minor,
however.
The game play is all Rock Band, verbatim. There is literally nothing
new here, no doubt due to additional feature of using the tracks as
Downloadable Content. Anyone who has played a Rock Band or Guitar
Hero title knows pretty much everything there is to know. A personal,
though minor, pet peeve is that the effect switch on the Rock Band
Stratocaster has been reassigned once again. This change is
completely cosmetic. The game offers achievements, about half of
which can be earned on a single play by any given instrument. One of
these is acquired by playing the full set in one session, but
considering that one achievement for Rock Band 2 is to play all 84
songs without pausing or failure, many will find this a step down in
terms of challenge.
One flaw becomes apparent in the live format. Several songs are
extended with sing-alongs, a call and response with the crowd. Often,
this means that there are two active members, and two left to twiddle
their thumbs. Of the two members active, the drummer will often lock
in a rather boring rhythm. This leaves the vocalist as the only
active member doing anything of note. This only happens in a couple
of the songs, but it demonstrates an issue with incorporating certain
songs verbatim, especially in a live format. In fairness, several
songs already out as part of the core Rock Band experience feature
sparse parts for one or more of the players. "Green Grass and High
Tides" features only a few phrases for the vocalist, the lion's share
being blistering guitar solos. Another flaw, more in the game
itself, is that there are a lot of "Big Rock Endings." Some are
long, including one that is a full 90 seconds. This means that
instead of playing some of the finales, players flail on guitars and
drums for a large score, only playing the final note(s). In some
instances, a portion of the finale is played, wrapped up by button
mashing.
Technical aspects aside, it's hard to quantify the value of such a
pack. Used as DLC, this is the most expensive track pack yet. Used
as a standalone game, it's the most feature limited of either the Rock
Band or Guitar Hero series (Even the first Guitar Hero let you select
characters and purchase instruments). On the other hand, it's AC/DC,
and this may be the only format that fans of music rhythm games will
ever get most tracks. Although costly, the price is at least
partially balanced by a setlist that is simply amazing for all the
instruments (at least some of the time). This track pack seems like
the most polarizing content yet: Those who don't like AC/DC will not
enjoy themselves at all, and even fans of the band may only
begrudgingly shell out the steep price. For a fan of the band, even
if it's only their hits, this is an essential addition to the Rock
Band experience. For the rest, it's a coin toss at best.
