BRATTLEBORO, VT, December 20 - - Well. I have run my "Ballad of Slim
Clark" query many times without success. But not this time.
Persistence works. Or at least it might. More on this later.
.

<> Though this week has not been as busy as the last several, it still
has been surprisingly hopping for a week before Christmas. Normally,
we are deep into a slowdown by this point; but the pace of this week
would be normally active for any time of year.

The New England popular music community has the national economy beat
all to pieces.

Not that this is a difficult thing to achieve at the moment.
.

DISCS SPINNING
at NEMS Headquarters

<> In a new but (hopefully) ongoing attempt to get caught up on the
listening matter sent us, I played new recordings as well as oldies.
One - three tracks by the Fourtold - may go WAY back. Group members
Cindy Mangsen and Steve Gillette are based in or around Bennington,
Vermont. Right or wrong, I have always associated Fourtold's Anne
Hills with Maine. (Hills is in a still-current group with Mangsen and
Priscilla Herdman.) Sorry to say, I am drawing a blank on fourth
Fourtolder Michael Smith, his name drawing my thoughts to a great
piece once posted here by Nancy Neon regarding Mike Smith of the Dave
Clark 5. I had never before heard these three tracks by The Fourtold,
and I must say they are quite good. Steve Gillette once posted a Web
page, naming various acts who have covered his original material; and
it shows quite clearly that he has had impressive success as a
songwriter. His current duo with Cindy Mangsen will seem to play only
a scattering of shows close to home, only then to turn around and take
off on a big national tour.

<> "Nexterday" by Ric Ocasek is dated 2005, but I had never before
listened to it. What I have now is a loaner copy from a family
member. This is really good stuff. It seems to me that Ocasek's
voice strained slightly here and he repeated himself, lyrically, a bit
there; but overall, this may be the best Ric Ocasek solo album I have
heard. It is something like "Door to Door," the final regular Cars
studio album, only with more crispness in the sound and a little
sharper attack. Nice, much appreciated nods to Buddy Holly arise here
and there. At the very least, "Nexterday" was a really encouraging
release, and I regret not hearing it when it originally came out.
Great job, Ricky O!

<> As noted below, I also went back to a demo by the Naomi Sommers and
Noam Weinstein duo, The Broken Dreamers. Since these two have Boston
ties, I asked and was told that this group's name has no connection
with "Another Broken Dream" by The Neats, an historic number which was
performed while the revered early 1980s Boston club, The Underground,
was dismantled by fans who needed an alt-rock home away from home more
than they needed a college laundramat.

<> Apropos, in a way, to The Underground ... if, this past summer, you
saw someone in Brattleboro, Vermont jogging in an attractive yellow
and red Boston Rock T-shirt, that would have been me.

MAJEL BARRETT OF STAR TREK
Rest in Peace

<> Not every Star Trek production has been equally good. I,
personally, found Star Trek: The Generation to be most remarkable for
its boringness. (Plenty of other people saw it differently.) But Star
Trek has worked magic in the past, and it could be that it always
will. It is because followers really care about the series.

Probably an overwhelming majority of Star Trek fans were disappointed
by "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." But creator Gene Roddenberry's
novelization of that film explains it wonderfully, restores some of
what was cut and edited into confusion, and makes it a much better
viewing experience. Read the book. Revisit the film. AND the
Roddenberry novelization is a pretty decent reading experience all on
its own.

There is, or at least was, a series of books of Star Trek short
stories written by fans, and those volumes are some of the best Star
Trek product ever.

In the 1970s - I think it was the 70s - there was a middling animated
Star Trek series. That series was written up and published as a set
of short stories which are really quite good.

Star Trek has found more ways to rise from the ashes than just about
anything I can name.

William Shatner recently said when he first watched the original Star
Trek pilot, he could see why a network might not want to run with it,
and he made suggestions about what could be done differently.

Thinking of Gene Roddenberry's creativity working in collaboration
with others, as implied by Shatner's comments, I wonder whether Majel
Barrett, Roddenberry's wife, whose death was announced this week, may
have contributed considerably to Star Trek's success. This is a thing
I have never looked into, but I wonder.

Either way, as Christine Chapel, Major Barrett was a frequent part of
the Star Trek company; and I understand she also provided one of the
computer's voices.

Charlie Rose has spoken of scientists who consulted with science
fiction writer Ray Bradbury, because Bradbury's imagination often gave
them interesting ideas to pursue. I have occasionally heard
scientists on the radio similarly making intriguing references to
their own take on Gene Roddenberry's thinking.

Majel Barrett must have been a part of this fascinating exchange of
information and ideas.

Nurse Chapel will be missed. But now she can have fun, in another
life or another realm, plaguing Dr. McCoy, as he once feared, by
arguing every little diagnosis with him.

YAHOO NEWS HEADLINE
Friday Morning

: : : Mark Felt, Watergate's `Deep Throat,'
: : : dies at 95 (AP)

<> Watergate was a very negative thing for America. But it had its
positive side, not least of which is that Woodward and Bernstein of
the Washington Post interested many, many young people in improving
the state of journalism. Woodward, Bernstein, and their editors could
not have done it without their "Deep Throat" informant.

American journalism has gone through several births and rebirths, and
in my opinion we are overdue for another. This is based on my own
personal experience, getting a lot of my news from the radio. For
national and international reports, in this area we receive CBS and
CNN hourly radio headline news services, plus a superior hour-long
Monday through Friday broadcast, "America in the Morning," hosted by
the great Jim Bohannon.

On CBS and CNN radio news there is altogether too much passing along
information fed to reporters by governments, political organizations,
and other parties; there is far too little investigative reporting;
and there are many too many presentations of what COULD take place
later that day or on some upcoming date.

I could happily live without any further "news" reports of what MIGHT
happen later.

Plenty of Americans of good conscience would dispute that combat
specifically in Iraq is a battle against terrorists - some were of the
view from the start that its point was oil - but the radio news
networks, nonetheless, have often described fighting in Iraq as "The
War on Terror" as if this represents a commonly accepted position or
even an established fact.

Not long ago, in a report of a tasing incident, a CBS radio journalist
stated that the police "had to" taser the individual involved, in
effect taking the side of the police. And maybe law enforcement
officers were faced with no better alternative and really did have to
taser the man to do their duty. But I heard nothing in this news
story suggesting any way the reporter could have possibly known what
the police HAD to do: only what the police DID do. Declaring that the
police HAD TO taser this individual was, at best, really bad and most
unfortunate writing. It would certainly be my guess that the man who
was tased, his family and friends, and his lawyer would recount this
story quite differently.

The compulsive need for gloom, gloom, and more gloom in stories on the
economy is mind-numbing. For some reason, radio news editors must
think this is what we want to hear. Even when the news is good or
when numbers in government and business reports are not as bad as had
been forecast, the radio news doomsayers will still find a negative
angle or end with a glum question such as, "But can it last?"

None of us are well served by this sort of writing of news reports.

Watergate helped inspire many young people to perform at a higher
level of investigative reporting. With luck, recent and future events
will influence a new generation to do the same.

The death of Mark Felt - Watergate's "Deep Throat" - brought to mind
all these things and more.

FRANK CRITELLI AND LYS GUILLORN
Three-Song Set
and a Cowgirl Band
Sunday (Tomorrow)

<> It seems to me it has been a good long while since we saw a listing
for a show by Connecticut Cowgirl Lys Guillorn. But thanks to Frank
Critelli, we've got one to post now.

Critelli, Cowgirl, and bohemian frolicking, if your heart can take it,
at the Winter Solstice. Sounds like a great show coming up Sunday on
State Street in New Haven.

Sunday, December 21, 5-8pm:

BRAD JACOBS'S WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION @ NEVER ENDING BOOKS
810 State Street
New Haven, Connecticut

The LYS GUILLORN BAND and ROPE also perform. Frank performs solo -
three songs in the middle. Free admission, pizza, beverages, bohemian
frolicking.

ROCK BAND HOLIDAY PACK

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/12/18/harmonix-announces-new-rock-band-holid\
ay-song-track-pack/

[The holiday pack] Includes:

"Hanukkah Blessings" by Barenaked Ladies

"Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You" by Billy Squier

The Pretenders' version of "Blue Christmas."

"I was hoping for more songs, and I wish they had a different BNL
song, but not terrible."

SOURCE: Stephen Lewis, E-Mail Message, December 18, 2008.

This pack also seems to be a little on the white side. It's hard to
imagine how inclusion of a non-caucasian act would have hurt. Call it
a hunch, but I am guessing that, say, The Persuasions may have
recorded a seasonal song or two. Nonetheless, it's great to see
ex-Sidewinders Billy Squier waxing romantic this holiday season. - Ed.

NAOMI SOMMERS
CD-Release Event

: : : Club Passim
: : : Cambridge, Massachusetts
: : : Sunday, January 4, 2009

<> "The second event [the first event being the launching of her new
website - Ed.] is my CD Release Show at Club Passim, on Sunday,
January 4th at 7:30 pm.

"Yippee! I haven't played at Passim for awhile, and this will be my
first show headlining there ever. If you are my friend from the
Boston area, please come and bring your friends too. This will be a
really fun show: my entire family band is coming to back me up. My
mom Beth will play the upright bass, my dad will play banjo and
mandolin, and my brother will add his fancy trumpet stylings. ALSO,
Noam Weinstein is going to join me on a few songs, with his beautiful
electric guitar and harmony vocals.* Oh, my parents and I sing
three-part harmonies too. I can't wait to share some new songs and
new arrangements of old songs with you. This will be a great show, I
almost guarantee it! (Nothing is ever guaranteed.)"

"* There may be another special guest as well."

SOURCE: Naomi Sommers, "New Website and Passim Show," December 15, 2008.

WE ARE IN POSSESSION . . of a demo CD, "Early Sketches" by The Broken
Dreamers, a Naomi Sommers duo with Noam Weinstein. This demo was
recorded not long after Sommers' then-latest CD, and her advance as a
singer, as shown on the disc with Weinstein, was remarkable. It is
seldom, indeed, that one gets to hear an artist develop so much in
such a short time. On "Early Sketches," Sommers aced several songs,
including "Top of the Hill," "Hard To Love You," "Green to Yellow,
Yellow to Red," and "Alaska."

"Gentle as the Sun," Naomi Sommers latest CD, is something like a
debut, in the sense that it is the first release in the next phase of
her career.

With luck.

"Gentle as the Sun" is a classic album of recordings that could easily
appeal to a wide audience.

New releases backed by big, well financed marketing campaigns, but
that are not half as good as this Naomi Sommers disc, grow rich in
critical praise. In better economic times, this may be followed by
packed concert halls and busy tours.

Hopefully a limping economy will not deal this gal and her deserving
album a missed opportunity.

By all rights, "Gentle as the Sun" by Naomi Sommers should sell
briskly; and her CD-release concert at Club Passim ought to be
crowded. "Gentle as the Sun" is the sort of record that should lift
Sommers' career into a much higher orbit.

J A D A
Jada's Boston Music Awards Win

It seems fair to say that members of the Boston vocal group, Jada, are
happy. (Read on.) We would like to know how they arrived at exactly
four exclamation marks as the right number for their headline, but
that may be a query we would have to go into in another issue.
Meanwhile, here is what we were sent on behalf of the Jada singing troupe:

"Jada Wins the Outstanding Pop/R&B Act of the Year Award at this years
Boston Music Awards!!!!

<> "Thanks to all Jada's fans who showed their support by voting so
enthusiastically! Kudos to the Boston Music Awards and Ernie
Boch/Music Drives Us Foundation for putting on such a classy event and
contributing great energy to the Boston music scene. And Jada has
special thanks to their fabulous sponsors who all keep Jada stylin' -
James Joseph Salon, Debra Macki Cosmetics, hairstylist Christopher
Kezik, Dr. Meola of Dental Associates of New England and special shout
outs to Gia Ventola for the fabulous wardrobe styling, Courtney B.
from TOUCH 106.1 FM for the great introduction and to Ian
Barrett/RealRock TV for his great video work capturing it all!

"Jada would like to thank Bristol: . . 'From where we started as
aspiring vocalists and performers, to where we are now, having
achieved a major label recording contract ... none of it would be
possible without the support and guidance of Ric and Laura Poulin and
the entire Bristol staff! We went from having just a few things going
on as individual performers to learning ALL about how to create a real
working musical act poised for success. Bristol's artist development
program offers amazing tools. Over the past 5 years, we have
developed the skills needed to be self reliant and capable business
people in addition to honing our performance, vocal & songwriting
abilities to our fullest potential! This is only the beginning!!'

<> We have totally missed out on the music of Dwight Ritcher and only

"The Dwight Ritcher Band will be playing at Atwoods Tavern tonight.
Come by for the hang on Tuesdays in December and January. The fellas
will be working through the last two records and performing new tunes
which will land on their third record in February. Thanks to Ron

YODELING SLIM CLARK SONG
A Query Answered

And the answer may be, "Yes."

<> If you have been around here long enough to see my several postings
in request of the lyrics for "The Ballad of Slim Clark" by Jackie
Woodbury, you may marvel at this; but it is looking as though I may
have done it right this time.

I'll get back to this later; but I am informed that chances are good a
copy of the "Slim Clark" words may be coming my way by postal mail.

http://www.yodelingslimclark.com/

Jack Woodbury, who wrote and recorded the "Ballad of Slim Clark," has
been inducted, as a Living Legend, into the Maine Academy of Country
Music. Here, by the way, is that organization's Web address:

http://www.macmhome.org/

Yodeling Slim Clark resided in western Massachusetts, then Keene, New
Hampshire, and finally at various points in Maine, not far from Bangor
and Waterville. When asked how he could be a cowboy based in New
England, Slim said that being a cowboy is not a matter of geography:
it is a way of living.

Yodeling Slim Clark lived the life and has been inducted into the
Cowboy Hall of Fame.

GAMING SYSTEMS
Radical Power Differences

<> One of the major problems with this generation of video game
consoles is the radical power difference between the three systems.
The Playstation 3 is something like 50 times more powerful than the
prior PS2, and is the most powerful console of the gen. The XBox 360
is something more like 20 times more powerful than its predecessor,
taking the second place spot. Most games are designed with the 360's
archetecture in mind, so the performance difference between the two
are generally pretty minor.

By contrast, the Nintendo Wii is about double the power of the
Gamecube. Nintendo's console is far weaker than the other two, which
means multi-platform games have to be watered down for the Wii. Games
that boast new physics engines, games that have next gen graphics and
games that feature a lot of environment or enemies or other objects
all have to be scaled back radically, and what you generally get is a
weak port with motion controls.

On the other hand, it looks like the people who are behind the new
Ghostbusters game have taken a different approach. Rather than just
scaling down the graphics, they came up with a different art style,
which is more cartoony but aesthetically pleasing. While it follows
the same story (according to the developers), they restructured the
gameplay. There are motion controls (The gimmick designed to set the
Wii apart), but apparently the yare very restricted. The video I
watched had a very destructible environment, reminiscent of the movies
(Where things hit by the beams from the proton packs would explode,
burn, or break).

When Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was released, I expected it to get
this kind of treatment. TFU is one of the only official stories
outside of the six movies right now, telling the story of Darth
Vader's secret apprentice as he hunts down the last of the Jedi and
encounters the early Rebellion. No expense seemed spared for the XBox
and Playstation versions, but the Wii was just another downgrade with
no functionality. It's odd to me that Ghostbusters would get a
treatment even something as big as an official Star Wars story
wouldn't, but it really does look like this may be the case.

It's amazing. Developers don't seem to get that making the same game
for radically different systems won't work very well. Nintendo's got
the most popular console, but gets the worst versions of the game
because nobody wants to amke a different version. Microsoft and
Sony's systems are so similar it doesn't matter that one's way more
powerful than the other, so they get pretty much the same game
experience one way or another, and that works. But the difference
between the Wii version of a game and the PS3/360 version is generally
so great, it's like the difference between a big Hollywood production,
and a third grade rendition.

On a related note, it looks like Activison dropped the game because
they couldn't make yearly installments out of it, and therefore,
couldn't just slap a new paintjob on it each year and offer up a "new"
version. Activision has already released screens for Guitar Hero 5
(name pending), evidently, when World Tour has only been out like a
month. Thankfully, Atari's publishing this. I'd really like to see
the third Ghostbusters movie released, and sales of this game might
well prompt Columbia to stop ignoring the franchise.
