BRATTLEBORO, VT, January 17 - Well, the Brattleboro high school's band
is representing the state of Vermont at the Barack Obama inauguration.
Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls says she's playing Washington DC
on inauguration day. It looks as though we may be getting into the
spirit of a changing of the guard.

According to polling data, we Americans are extremely optimistic in
our sense of what President Obama can do to bring about favorable
changes including changes in the economy. This goes for Obama voters,
but it also brings in a hefty percentage of people who favored McCain
in the 2008 election. Consumers account for two-thirds of the
American economy. Individually we may have little impact, but
collectively we are really powerful. So even if we Americans are
being overly optimistic about positive changes Obama can bring about
and how quickly he can do it, our over-optimism is still not
necessarily a bad thing. As long as our outlook is bright, we can
jump-start the economy.

"Happy days are here again..."

Time will tell, won't it.
.

In the meantime, while there seems to be no end in sight to the
trouble the so-called "bubble economy" can get itself into, the New
England music community economy, though showing a mix of strengths and
weaknesses, overall is just not doing all that badly.

OUR recession happened in 2007. The year 2008 raced right along, and
2009 is getting off to an impressive start.

Even though his remarks were aimed straight at the major record
labels, the best thing I have ever seen on the "bubble economy" was
spoken by David Crosby of Crosby, Stills and Nash. He said, these
days label executives can tell you that, last week, they shipped
16,000 units to Houston; but they cannot answer the question, "Of what?"
.

Thanks to Brian in southern New Hampshire and Brian in western
Massachusetts. We benefited from information provided by each of
these rock 'n' roll fellers.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK

For the first time in many weeks I think, it looks as though we have
enough press releases for a press release section, posted after brief
items.

<> Boston Music Trail (TM). We have a press release announcing a new
Boston Music Trail. And at the end of it is a request for suggestions
for stops along the trail.* Here are ideas that come quickly to my mind:

: : Berklee College of Music

: : Boston Garden site

: : The Old Howard site (Howard Athenaeum)

: : New England Conservatory of Music

: : Symphony Hall

: : Peter Wolf (College of Musical Knowledge)

* Serge Koussevitzky's birthplace, unfortunately, is out of the
question, as it would be a prohibitively long walk from Mass. Ave. to
Russia. But the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Koussevitzky exerted a
MAJOR influence on music in America, in large part by programming,
conducting, premiering, and commissioning a tremendous amount of new
music.

Since Peter Wolf, strictly speaking, is not a place, WBCN-FM or
WILD-AM may be seen by many as suitable substitutes.

Boston had a classic big band-era ballroom, though the name has never
totally set in my memory. There have been important jazz clubs such
as the Hi-Hat and Storyville. One of these was run by the parents of
newswoman Barbara Walters. Judging from the WAY high quality of the
acts she has spoken of sneaking downstairs to hear, when she was a
girl, her family's club certainly seems worth considering. I used to
shop in a Cambridge store - it seems to me the name may have been
Briggs & Briggs - that was one of the very first record stores
anywhere. This could be seen as both musical and historic.

Just a few thoughts. There are many, many others. Please consult the
Music Museum of New England music trail announcement below as to how
you can pass along your own ideas.

MR. LIF
"I Heard It Today"
To Be Released April 21, 2009

"MR LIF TO RELEASE I HEARD IT TODAY ON HIS BLOODBOT TACTICAL
ENTERPRISES IMPRINT

"Mr. Lif's albums have always had their finger on the pulse of America
but I Heard It Today is his coup du sort. Boldly holding a mirror to
the face of society, Lif has blended veteran producers such as Edan
and J Zone with up and coming producers Willie Evans Jr., Batsauce,
Therapy, and Headnodic to create an album that speaks brazenly about
the current political issues and agendas Americans and the global
community are facing: fear, paranoia, and angst as the U.S. economy
collapsed and the bailout bill passed, self hatred in the Black
community, and the housing crisis are just a few of the topics touched
on through I Heard It Today. Lif takes these negatives and turns
them on their head, using them in search of a healthier way of life
and a way to achieve freedom and peace of mind through the power of
the imagination. In a true "change starts with you" move, Lif is
self-releasing the album on his new Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises
label on April 21st 2009.

"Mr. Lif has been a fixture in the hip-hop world since he stepped on
the scene in 1997, releasing a string of EP's and albums on rap power
house Definitive Jux while cultivating a reputation for story telling
that ranks him along side such legends as Chuck D, KRS One, Rakim & Guru."

THE BOSTON MUSIC TRAIL(TM) WILL BE LAUNCHED BY THE MUSIC MUSEUM OF NEW
ENGLAND(TM)

Ernie Boch Jr.'s Music Drives Us Foundation Provides Initial Funding

The Bostonian Society Partners with the Museum to Place Markers on Sites

The Music Museum Of New England (MM/ONE) will launch the Boston Music
Trail to honor sites significant to the musical history of the city,
and to provide visitors with information about them and directions
where to find them. Representing all genres of music, the sites on
the Trail will be a mix of performance venues, educational
institutions, media outlets, former residences of musicians and other
locations. Markers will be placed at the sites explaining their
significance, and additional information will be available through the
MM/ONE website

http://www.mmone.org/

as well as by podcasts or a cellphone-based audio tour.

The first phase of the Trail, involving six locations, is being
supported with a grant from by Music Drives Us, a foundation created
by the automotive Boch family to support music education, preservation
and awareness throughout New England. Ernie Boch Jr., President and
Founder of Music Drives Us, and a musician as well, said: "We are
really pleased to help MM/ONE launch the Boston Music Trail, which
will drive awareness of our rich musical heritage, and the people and
organizations who contributed to it."

The idea for the Trail arose from a joint effort by MM/ONE and The
Bostonian Society to commemorate the legendary 1960s rock and blues
club, The Boston Tea Party. The Society placed a historic marker on
the building in Boston's South End which was the club's first home.
The marker was unveiled at an event conducted by the Museum in January
2007 and attended by many people who worked, performed or went to
shows at the Tea Party. Among them were concert promoter Don Law, who
ran the club in 1968-70; members of The J. Geils Band, regular
performers there; local punk icon Willie “Loco” Alexander, whose
band The Lost played opening night on January 20, 1967; and two
original members of the band Boston, who were inspired by seeing Led
Zeppelin perform there on their first American tour in January 1969.
Video from that event can be seen at the MM/ONE website.

Steve Nelson, President and co-founder of MM/ONE, and manager of the
Tea Party in 1967-68, cites the success of that event as the
inspiration for the Music Trail. "The Tea Party is but one of many
noteworthy places around the city which deserve to be recognized and
remembered for their importance to music here in Boston, and around
the world."

The Bostonian Society, Boston's historical society, has been placing
markers at sites of historical, social and cultural significance to
the city for over 100 years. The Tea Party building was one of the
first music-related sites to be so honored. As was the case for that
marker, MM/ONE will nominate sites for the Trail and submit them to
the Society's marker committee for approval. Brian LeMay, Executive
Director of the Society, said: “Boston has long been the home of
musical innovation and leadership, and the Bostonian Society is
pleased to cooperate in a program that places historic markers at
sites celebrating the people and events that have exerted such a
strong influence on both our local and national cultures.”

The identity of the first six sites to be designated as stops along
the Trail will be revealed at a future event. MM/ONE welcomes any
suggestions.

CHICK SINGER NIGHT: BOSTON
Benefit Show
Johnny D's
Somerville, Massachusetts
Thursday, February 12, 2009

CHICK SINGER NIGHT (CSN) BOSTON kicks off the New Year right with
another amazing night of music to support music programs in our local
public
schools.. Now in it’s 5th year, Chick Singer Night Boston returns to
the legendary JOHNNY D’S (17 Holland Street, Davis Square "
Somerville) on Thursday, February 12th. Hosted by The Vykki Vox Band and
Jennifer Truesdale, CSN Boston has grabbed the attention of
Boston’s top
performers who have been reaching out to be a part of this incredible
series. This time around the stellar lineup includes: Kelly Riley,
Sarah Greene, Claire Vanderpot - a 12 year old vocalist/guitarist who is
returning to CSN by popular demand with her band mates, Cheryl Aruda
Jess Yoakum, Raising Scarlet, Dylan Kerr - an 8 year old student who
loves to perform, and Sam James (CSN’s Are You Man Enough Feature)
- Sam
has been showcasing in NYC for labels and is on the verge of being
signed.

Founded in Chicago, with the purpose of assisting community arts and
other charitable causes around the country, Chick Singer Night has been
rapidly expanding with support from NAMM, Berklee College of Music,
Jeannie Deva Voice Studios and many other local and national
organizations.
CSN Chapters now include: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago,
Nashville, Las Vegas, Boston and many other major cities, as well as
recently
moving into the international scene with a chapter in Sweden. CSN is
supported by the national non-profit organization, Breathe - A
Foundation
for the Artist. Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Megan
Mullally, Lisa Loeb, Mandy Moore, Paul Shaffer and MTV have all been
supportive
of CSN and many are continuing to take notice of this growing
organization.

While the non-profit CSN Boston Showcase Series follows the basic
guidelines of the National Chick Singer Night organization, developed
over
20 years ago by LA’s Lori Maier. CSN Boston has the added mission of
raising funds for music and arts programs in our local schools, as well
as hopefully raising awareness about the extreme importance of these
programs to the future of our youth and our communities. CSN Boston has
donated over $5,000 to date to help many area public schools,
including Boston, Somerville, Medford, Winchester, Arlington and to
Brighton
High for their annual musical, since their music program in Brighton was
cut off completely. “I commend the good work that your organization
is doing on behalf of area public schools and their needy arts
programs.” Marsha E. Caron, Director of Fine Arts, Medford Public
Schools.

Research has shown that kids who are involved in music score better on
the SATs and that musical study develops critical thinking and self
discipline skills, improves a child's early cognitive development, basic
math and reading abilities, self-esteem, social skills and school
attendance. Yet funding for music and arts programs is being cut at an
alarming rate and many schools have reported that they have NO
budgets for
music and the arts. This is an alarming and detrimental trend and CSN
Boston is trying to do its part to help. CSN Boston, in cooperation with
Johnny Ds, has also created the first area showcases featuring up and
coming young talent, giving them a much-deserved start in the music
industry. Johnny D’s is largely responsible for giving artists like
Monster Mike Welch and Susan Tedeschi their start at the long running
Sunday afternoon all-ages open jam. “We really appreciate Johnny D’s
for helping to support this incredible cause
and allowing us the ability to include the younger performers and
their families.” said CSN Director, Vykki Vox. “We also
appreciate the
amazing pro musicians who donate their time, energy and expertise to
help make this all possible.”

So help inspire the next generation! Come on down to Johnny D's on
Thursday, February 12, 2009 and enjoy their great food, comfortable
atmosphere and some amazingly talented performers of all ages.
Tickets are $10 and advanced reservations are strongly recommended.
All profits go directly to the music programs in local public schools.
Call Johnny D's at (617) 776-2004. Plenty of free parking is available
and Red Line access as well.

http://www..JohnnyDs.com

[I must admit, though, the Johnny D's URL, as sent us, looks quite
doubtful; and anyone wanting to visit the site might want to improvise
a bit. - Ed.]

This is an ALL AGES SHOW. Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by an
adult and must have reservations for seating in the restaurant.

CSN is an ongoing series. For more info on artist submissions, please
contact: CSN Boston, P.O. Box 560193, W. Medford, MA 02156, or send
on-line press kits to VykkiVox@....

Thank-you for your continued support!
