BRATTLEBORO, VT, January 24 - The idea of a Boston music trail is
simply wonderful, and it was a real treat for me to think through what
might make good stops along such a trail. I avoided naming places
that had already been mentioned in this connection, the main example
being the old Boston Tea Party rock music hall.
No matter how the Boston music trail shapes up, this is a terrific
idea; and it is actually a little surprising it hasn't been done before.
The Melodeon on Washington Street was one of the first great American
concert halls. It was originally called the Lion Theatre, I think,
and became the Melodeon around the time it was bought by Boston's
Handel and Haydn Society. From the Melodeon, around the middle of the
nineteenth century, to WBCN-FM, in our lifetimes, Boston has REALLY
produced.
Of course, a lot, too, has happened since the advent of WBCN as a rock
FM station. And Boston - with its ups and downs, just like everywhere
else - continues to produce bigtime.
The city has a lot to celebrate, past, present, and future.

RIC OCASEK, OPRHEUS, JOHN STEWART
The year 2008 was the worst one we have had, up to the present, for
listening to music. So far, 2009 has been terrific by comparison.
This past week and going back a bit beyond, we have needed to play
mostly oldies.
<> The closest this has brought us to a new release is "Nexterday"
(2005) by Ric Ocasek. (Plus we heard a Becky Chace retrospective, as
noted below.) A member of my family loaned me a copy of "Nexterday,"
and I have played it for everyone I could. We have reached a clear
consensus that this is Ocasek's best solo album, or at least it is
clearly our favorite.
<> I went looking for an Orpheus song on "The Best of Orpheus" which,
alas, is not there. But on my way to this sad realization, I was
reminded that this Worcester/Boston band turned out a heck of a lot of
tracks that I really liked ... and, of course, STILL really like.
<> Also, I needed to find a little comic bit by John Stewart on his
"Phoenix Concerts" album. It is the very short tale about him going
out to buy cigarettes. "The Phoenix Concerts" has not played here in
a long, long time. Listening again years later, it is easy to see why
Stewart had incredibly loyal fans. Personally, I think he would have
been better off with a little less band. The arrangements are a bit
muddier here than on the studio recordings. But as criticisms go,
this one is really tiny. And I had totally forgotten that one of my
favorite John Stewart songs, "Runaway Fool of Love," is on this
record. This was a highly successful listening experience and a great
trip down memory lane.
.
PRESIDENTS
<> What a wide range of people have been president of the United
States. Well, okay, a wide range of men. For me, our greatest
president was Franklin D. Roosevelt. Heaven knows he had enough
opportunities to achieve greatness. As a human being, George
Washington had his share of shortcomings. But as president of the
United States, he deftly got past them time and time again. If we all
did as well, this would be a lot better world. The president I most
admire is Abraham Lincoln. He wasn't called "Honest Abe" for nothing.
And the president I liked the most was John F. Kennedy. The
president who comes in second doesn't come remotely close to Kennedy
for me. But for all the comparisons of Barack Obama's rise to the
office of president and the challenges he faces - comparisons more
often than not to Lincoln and FDR - it seems to me that what we most
need is another Theodore Roosevelt. This is why I believe Obama could
not possibly have gotten it more totally right when he said in his
inaugural address that we need to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves
off. No one did this better than Theodore Roosevelt, and we would all
do well to learn from his example. TR was not perfect by any means,
but he certainly knew how to get up and get at it.
I have been standing daily by a "Closed for President's Day" sign
which advises, "Remember Our Presidents," so our ex chief execs have
been on my mind.
Ironically, one of the old newspaper pages I accessed online this past
week announced the then-recent death of Andrew Jackson. I had no idea
he lived to such a great age. He made it nearly to age 80, at a time
when many, many people didn't even survive childhood.
.
RECORD RELEASES THIS WEEK
As Listed by Newbury Comics
IT IS NOT MY PLAN . . to duplicate Newbury Comics staff's efforts by
copying their whole new releases lists into this newsletter. But so
far, in the early going of 2009, we have had little clue about the
latest records being issued; and many of the acts making these record
are not particularly familiar to us, either. It is hard to have much
idea of what to include and what to exclude. Since the Newbury Comics
lists, this time of year, are not overly long, we are temporarily
solving these problems by posting whole lists. With luck, this
practice will not last at all deep into the year.
We are aware that Animal Collective is popular and Andrew Bird has
certainly enjoyed a great reputation. Bon Iver has been critically
acclaimed. The name of the band, Mindless Self-Indulgence, could be
apt - you be the judge; but this seems to be an act with a large
following. It is hard to go wrong with Frank Sinatra. This is about
all we can add to the Newbury Comics list. Here it is...

CLYDE JOY, 92
New England Country Music Pioneer
Country Gordy sent an announcement which included this:
<> "Clyde Joy passed away early this morning, Jan. 19th in Methuen,
Massachusetts, at Sunbridge. He was 92 and called himself the Grand
daddy of New England Country Music. He spent 16 years on WMUR-TV with
his band called Clyde and Willie May Joy and the Country Folks, and
opened his Circle 9 Ranch in the 70's. Clyde was the 2nd person
inducted into the NH CMA Hall of Fame."
As far as I recall, I missed Clyde Joy and Willie May Joy; so, sorry
to say, there is nothing I can add from personal experience. Sixteen
years, though, is a really long time to be on television, and
obviously this speaks very well of these folks.
Extremely late in our newsletter cycle, we received word of a Clyde
Joy obituary in New Hampshire's Manchester Union Leader. It seems
probable the obituary would be available for a time online at the
Union Leader's website.

LISSA SCHNECKENBURGER
New England Mini-Tour
Lissa Schneckenburger, these days a local Brattleboro, Vermont gal,
has an excellent new album, "Song," and she is taking her music around
New England. This newsletter issue will go out too late for us to
advise anyone about her fiddle workshop this afternoon at Acoustic
Artisans in Portland, Maine. But she has a show, not to be missed,
tonight (Saturday night) at The Empire, Congress Street, Portland,
Maine. Then after a stop at The Elysium Arts Folk Club in
Rollinsford, New Hampshire on Sunday, she will come within two blocks
of right here where I type these missives. In the musical company of
bassist Corey DiMario of the Lissa Schneckenburger Band and Crooked
Still, she will be playing the Northern Roots Festival, an all-day
event, at The New England Youth Theater, Brattleboro, Vermont,
Saturday, January 31, two blocks from the place I call home. If you
catch the Brattleboro show, e-mail me beforehand and maybe we can
shake hands, blow kisses, or wave at one another.

NOAM WEINSTEIN
Two-City World Tour
New York, Tuesday, January 27
Boston, Thursday, January 29
Different people are likely to find different moments to especially
enjoy in Noam Weinstein's songs. Though I don't have the exact
wording at hand, one of my own personal favorites goes pretty much
like this.
. . . You count your blessings
Then try to tell yourself
The sum is not depressing . . .
Maybe a little Leonard Cohen influence?
Bostonians who would like to catch up with this guy and see what he's
up to musically these days may have special interest in that his area
venue is at Cambridge's Zeitgeist Gallery. A lot of folks have valued
the Zeitgeist Gallery.

WEISSTRONAUTS
Take Vermont
: : : Weisstronauts
: : : Pleasant Valley Brewing
: : : Saxtons River, Vermont
: : : Saturday, January 31, 2009
Just when Vermonters thought they were safe from the threat of
instrumental rock 'n' roll decadence, here come The Weisstronauts.
Actually, there are reasons, geographic and other, why Vermont can be
a difficult state for non-folk acts to break into. But variety is the
spice of life, and these Weisstro pickers are a really good pick for
spicing up the southern Vermont mix.
If you are within striking distance of Saxtons River and you are
thinking of step, step, stepping out on Saturday, January 31, this
Weisstro show could be the place to go.

REDDY TEDDY

ASA BREBNER CHECKS IN WITH FRIENDS, FANS
A while back we posted an announcement of a Reddy Teddy CD-release
event, including a super set of their musical friends. Here is the
latest version of the announcement:
<> "This is a reminder that Robin Lane and The Chartbusters will be
playing at the Middle East Restaurant downstairs next Saturday,
January 31. Also on the bill are Willie Alexander and The Boom Boom
Band, Reddy Teddy (it's their CD release show) and Corolla DeVille.
Robin and the 'Busters are currently scheduled to go on first, so be
sure to check with the Middle East for set times. They're pretty good
about giving set times on their recording if you call them 2pm or
later the day of the show."
Attached to the show announcement came a message from Asa Brebner
(Mickey Clean and the Mezz, the Modern Lovers, Robin Lane and the
Chartbusters, the Asa Brebner Band) to his friends, fans, and fellow
Americans. Here is a part of it:
"As you have probably noticed, you have not heard much from Asa
Brebner much lately. I've been in exile for almost two years up in
the north country. Honing my skills, biding my time."

BECKY CHACE
Video Release Party
Sunday, February 15, 2009
The Hi-Hat
Providence, Rhode Island
<> "Video Release Party, Full band performance, video shown in it's
entirety for first time. $10 at the door. Free parking in Davol
Square parking lot."
http://www.beckychace.com/
SOURCE: Becky Chace, "Video Release Party," January 23, 2009.
IN HONOR OF THE UPCOMING . . Becky Chace video release party, we held
a Becky Chace audio event, listening to her "The Best of Me"
compilation CD. But since the album is twenty tracks long and there
is no way time would permit doing justice to so much music, for the
present time, we confined ourselves to the first half. This is
actually the first time I have been able to play "The Best of Me" at a
good volume, while having both of my ears hearing at peak capacity.
(In December, I had three to four weeks AGAIN with limited hearing in
my left ear.)
Becky Chace has been more of a rocker than I had thought. My favorite
cuts consistently have been those with the strongest beat or with the
fullest band arrangements. Examples include "Start Right Now,"
"Rescue," and "Don't Say Hi." All the cuts are good, this is a
generous collection, and the pace changes often, helping keep up
listener interest. In summary, this is a band-enhanced generous chunk
of Chace. Well, this way of putting it is concise at least.
The video release event, Sunday, February 15, at the Hi-Hat in
Providence, Rhode Island ought to be a lot of fun.
When Forever Young next reconvenes - the Neil Young tribute band, of
which Becky Chace is a member - it will be another great way to check
out this gal in concert.

ANTJE DUVEKOT
Forthcoming Album, Two Tracks Online
Things have been quiet lately for those of us on the Antje Duvekot
mailing list, and now we have a hint as to why. Actually, Duvekot
used to live in this town; and this last week I walked past a woman
who easily looked enough like her to be her. Could have been an Antje
D return visit to the old hometown. Either way, we have well learned
that people who like Duvekot's songwriting REALLY like her songs. So
the announcement that she has a new album on the way is sure to cause
a stir.

DAVID MALLETT
Current MP3, Forthcoming Collection
WHEN IT COMES TO APPRECIATION . . of local music, it doesn't get a lot
earlier than this for me. I first heard David Mallett in 1964, give
or take a year.
This kid from Sebec, Maine has done pretty good, and fans across the
country - and, I guess, beyond - are going to be excited by two words
in his latest newsletter, "forthcoming collection."
"'North Meets South' - a song for Inauguration Day
"David Mallett has released 'North Meets South' on mp3 as a song of
hope and reconciliation as Barack Obama is inaugurated as President of
the United States. The song is part of a forthcoming collection of

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE MYSTERIOUS KIND
<> There is this gentleman who did me the HUGEST favor. With one
single suggestion, he brought my ten-year-long research project about
the mid-nineteenth-century vocal group, the Alleghanians, back from
the grave. This guy lately attended a gathering with a definite
connection to his own research topic. And at this get-together, my
new e-friend met the granddaughter of a man who I think could safely
be called one of the superstars of the realm of unexplained phenomena
going all the way back to the beginning of time, Edgar Cayce.
If you are at all familiar with the world of the paranormal, you
likely already know that Edgar Cayce is really, really, REALLY admired.
Talking with Cayce's granddaughter must have been a totally awesome
experience ... and I RARELY use the word, "awesome."

JOHN HICKS AND REVOLUTION
A Query
<> We have received another inquiry about the 1980s Massachusetts
country music act, John Hicks and Revolution.
The latest message asks what records Hicks issued and where they may
be obtained.
Mostly, information of this sort has not made it onto my computer, and
I can't get at many of my old vinyl recordings. The one relevant
listing I have is this:
John Hicks and Revolution
"Boston Cowboy" (LP, Belmont, 1982)

correspondent in his search for John Hicks and Revolution recordings,
please e-mail us by way of
: : : FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com

e-mail address.
The way I remember it, John Hicks was a very smooth and even slightly
folky country performer and could be compared, without causing any
disservice to the unique qualities of his own sound, to country star
Kenny Rogers, seasoned with a touch of singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.
