BRATTLEBORO, VT, February 7 - The other shoe has dropped. Months ago,
sometime in 2008, Yahoo totally trashed the great majority of its
Yahoo Mail Classic accounts. It was a truly massive reduction in
service, at least for those of us who used the services they cut or
ruined. They spared the e-mail account which is attached to this
Yahoo group. But now Yahoo Mail has trashed this e-mail account as
well. The labor-intensive nature of compiling this newsletter has
gone WAY the heck up. New levels of time consumption have been
achieved. It is entirely possible that, from here on out, the task of
compiling this newsletter will be impossible using Yahoo Mail.
But...
I had an alternative all lined up against the possibility this might
happen.
And my alternative is fantastic in every regard except for, now that I
have given it a full test, I have learned that it does not work.
Aside from not working, though, the alternative is every bit as
fantastic as I have said.
So, I am experimenting around to see whether I can create my own
system for compiling our newsletter issues. I will have to get back
to you later as to whether these mailings can continue. Right now,
you know pretty nearly as much as I do.
Meanwhile, even without this new technical problem, generated by the
crack staff of Yahoo, we still received more pretty-good news e-mails
than we have time to compile. This is a very, very busy time all
along the New England popular music circuit.
I am cutting my work short on this newsletter issue, though, to allow
time to make arrangements for next issue in hopes there will actually
be a next issue.
More later.
It is hoped.

RECORD RELEASES THIS WEEK
Listed by Newbury Comics
Excerpted by Us
We actually know very little about this week's record releases as
noted by Newbury Comics, though we and no doubt you know a great deal
about the veteran artists who are heavily represented: Asleep at the
Wheel, Chick Corea, Keith Emerson, B.B. King, Liza Minelli, Joni
Mitchell, Graham Nash, Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent...
The major labels seem to be relying VERY heavily on veteran artists
plus reissues and rereleases. Here is our shortened version of the
Newbury Comics list:
BPA (BRIGHTON PORT AUTHORITY)-I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat-$9.99
COREA, CHICK & HIROMI-Duet (2 CD)-$19.99
EMERSON, KEITH BAND-Keith Emerson Band-$11.88
FOSTER, RUTHIE-Truth According To Ruthie-$9.99
KING, B.B.-Best Of: 20th Century/Millenium Collection-$6.99
KWELLER, BEN-Changing Horses-$9.99
MINNELLI, LIZA-Liza's At The Palace-$19.99
MITCHELL, JONI-Blue-$12.99
<> If by some means you learn why "Blue" by Joni Mitchell is coming
out again, would you drop us a note about it via FredRemainsLost At
Yahoo Dot Com.
NASH, GRAHAM-Reflections (3 CD)-$44.99
NELSON, WILLIE/ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL-Willie & The Wheel-$11.88
NUGENT, TED-Spirit Of The Wild (Remastered)-$8.99
VON BONDIES-Love, Hate And Then There's You-$9.99
<> "The Von Bondies' song, 'C'mon C'mon,' is the theme to 'Rescue Me,'
an FX drama starring Dennis Leary (whose son evidently picked the
track). It has been in a couple of video games, including the title,
'Burnout 3: Takedown.' They have a largely dirty Garage-ish/Punk
sound to them, but I've always found them hard to lump in. However,
whatever their subgenre, they're really worth a listen." SOURCE:

Zack & Miri Make A Porno - $19.99 2-DVD set
[In our personal e-mail, we received an interesting anecdote connected
with the "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" soundtrack. Evidently "Make a
Porno" was considered to be controversial or maybe even offensive, and
distributor personnel encouraged theaters to abbreviate the title.
That's it: abbreviate the title. So people in charge of marquees at
many movie theaters thought they were doing what they were asked to do
when they shortened the title to "Make a Porno." Robert Burns was
right about "The best laid plans of mice and men..." (heh heh) - Ed.]

YAHOO NEWS HEADLINE
Friday Afternoon
: : : Wall Street shrugs off January job losses
: : : of 598K (AP)
Here is another version of essentially the same headline posted in
connection with the same news story:
: : : Wall Street shrugs off unemployment report
: : : for another big rally
<> This time, the reported economic figures were actually worse than
earlier forecast. In the Thursday-Friday overnight and in the morning
on Friday, those who predict such things forecast that the jobless
rate could rise to the worrisome 7.5 percent level. But according to
figures announced today (Friday), the jobless rate actually rose
higher: to a surprising 7.6 percent. And now the very people who
often will panic over practically anything and sometimes will panic
over essentially the same news story several times, as it emerges in
stages, really just can't be bothered over an unexpectedly bad
joblessness report. If this sort of thing is not enough to cause us
to consider the Wall Streeters, as a group, to be totally out of their
minds, it is hard to imagine what it would take.

STEVE GILLETTE AND CINDY MANGSEN
Bennington, Vermont, Benefit Concert
Saturday, February 7, 2009
Then on Tour, Zipping Back and Forth Across the Country
There is little we see more amazing than the tours of Steve Gillette
and Cindy Mangsen. These two will be totally silent for the longest
time: radio silence, retired, gone fishing, closed for alternations.
Then out of the blue comes the start of a busy national tour, blasting
Steve and Cindy across the United States and back again. It would be
necessary to check the Compass Rose Records website for details, of
which there are plenty. But here is the top part of the latest
Gillette-Mangsen tour announcement:
<> "We're getting ready to take off for California, after a home-town
benefit concert this Saturday night [Bennington VT, Sat. Feb. 7, with
storyteller Tom Weakly]. Before we get too busy, we thought we'd send
out our tour schedule for this Spring. We'll be touring the entire
west coast for the next six weeks, then back for some east coast and
midwest concerts as the Spring thaw arrives. We hope to catch up with
you along the way."

STEVE GILLETTE HAS HAD . . good success with many of his original
songs; but he will probably always be most remembered for Ian and
Sylvia's early interpretation of his "Darcy Farrow." - Ed.

TAYLOR ARMERDING
Studio Recording Work
According to the Account of Mark Erelli
"STUDIO NEWS:
<> "I [Mark Erelli] recently had the privilege of going into the
studio with New England bluegrass veteran Taylor Armerding (formerly
of Northern Lights) to record his solo record. Also in the band were
Zack Hickman on upright bass, banjo phenom Greg Liszt (Crooked Still,
Bruce Springsteen), flatpicking ace Lincoln Meyer (April Verch) and
amazing fiddler (and Taylor's son) Jake Armerding. Taylor plays a
mean mandolin and is one of those classic bluegrass high tenors, so
you can be forgiven for wondering what the hell was left for me to do.
I was honored to be asked to play guitar and steel, as well as sing
the high parts so Taylor could hold down the melodies. Don't know
when this project will be released commercially, but I'll keep you
posted."

EVERY POPULAR BAND . . ought to have its own historian, and it is
looking as though bassist Steve Keith may be Private Lightning's

I have some Private Lightning recordings on CD-R, and they sound
fantastic, especially when the volume is jacked up.

This headline has been revised two or three times or more, and this is
how it read Saturday morning:
: : : FDA: Plant knowingly sold salmonella-laced food (AP)
I don't know about you; but to me, this headline has much greater
impact when it speaks of "food" rather than the lots more ambiguous
"products" and when it says specifically WITH WHAT the food was
tainted. "Products" could be furniture, road salt, roadmaps, Rhode
Island Reds, or just about anything.
It seems likely that many if not most of our readers have been
sickened in the past by food poisoning. Maybe two years ago
salmonella-enhanced Peter Pan peanut butter got me. Food poisoning
can be quite severe and, of course, it can kill. So the fact that a
very serious charge is being made at the highest level that the
Georgia peanut plant knowingly shipped tainted food for people to eat
is, well, sickening. Vermont's United States Senator Patrick Leahy
has gone on as record saying that people who would do such a thing
ought to face jail time. It makes perfect sense to me.

[February 3, 2009 Press Release]
For Immediate Release
LANGERADO 2009 CANCELLED
Today, the 2009 Langerado Music Festival is cancelled due to sluggish
ticket sales. The 7th annual event was slated to happen March 6-8 at
their new home in downtown Miami's Bicentennial Park.
Langerado's independent local promoters, faced with a very tough
decision in a dismal economy, cancelled the 2009 event only after
every possible option was exhausted.
As Langerado Co-Promoter Ethan Schwartz explains, "Langerado has
always put the fan experience first. Unfortunately, during these
difficult economic times, and facing a first year in a new venue, it's
become apparent that we cannot execute a production that lives up to
the high standards of our past events. Putting Langerado on hold was
the toughest decision we have ever had to make. We are very grateful
for the support of the greater-Miami community and the music community
during this difficult time."
All tickets purchased will be refunded. Please look for ticket
refunds to be processed in the next 5-7 business days. Each order
will be refunded to the credit card in full, minus the included order
processing fees. Shipping fees will also be credited for those orders
that did not select the free shipping promotion. Visit
www.musictoday.com for more information.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more

main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
