BRATTLEBORO, VT, February 14 - This is our first newsletter issue
compiled using GMail. It is doubtful you will notice a difference,
but I sure do. GMail has most of the same disadvantages as the new,
radically misnamed Yahoo Mail Classic, plus it has disadvantages and
troubles of its own. But at least as far as my own experience goes
using my GMail and Yahoo e-mail accounts on this computer, GMail is so
much faster than Yahoo Mail Classic it's startling. This GMail
relative speed advantage, if this experience holds, will be a most
important consideration.

Clearly, though, GMail - at least on the server holding my account -
has been having serious problems since Thursday or even late
Wednesday. I have received a few connection error messages, along
with countless "Oops ... Error Code 6400" and "Bad Request" messages.
So it is too early to tell quite how all this is working out. These
error messages, as well as the stalling and stopping they accompany,
are WAY too numerous. If this persists, it will, beyond all doubt, be
the undoing of our use of GMail to compile these newsletters. I am
totally frazzled from this repeated start and stop experience.

If you have a GMail account, I would be tremendously interested in
learning whether you have had a similar experience with persistent
error messages and stalling/stopping behavior. Please e-mail us at
FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com, of course converting this into an
all-lowercase, conventional e-mail address. Please also say whether
you have highspeed or dialup and what browser you use. At present, I
know of three computer setups where the same problems with GMail have
been experienced, starting at least by Thursday and continuing into
Saturday so far. The one thing known to me that all three of these
computer systems have in common is that they have Mazilla Firefox for
a browser.

I see little if any chance of fitting in here all that we have
received this week for NEMS-ish news. I am compiling this issue
according to a new system of my own devising, while learning GMail's
quirks and trying to break old Yahoo Mail habits.

The going is slow . . .

There's more, but I am out of time; and the bad spell GMail seems to
be having has rubbed off on me. So, I'm done 'til next issue. Here's
the news we've got for you...

LINQ
"Life Goes On"

Back when the Vermont Guardian was still a going concern, we received
a solo album by one of THE stars of 1970s/1980s women's music, Cris
Williamson. The sentiments expressed on that disc were as I would
have expected, from reading articles and interviews. So what was most
striking was the care with which the record was made. Unfortunately,
it arrived after what would have been my deadline, and I was unable to
write up Williamson or her CD. But Williamson, by that time, was both
a veteran and a star of women's music; and she could have dashed off a
record, and fans still would have loved it. Be that as it may, it was
readily apparent that, in addition to doing her part to save the world
and expressing her views directly on a variety of topics, Williamson
placed making the best music she could on a very high priority.

"Life Goes On" by Linq is in a somewhat similar vein.

Save the world? Check.

Put my thoughts out there for all to hear? Check.

Make a great sounding CD? You bet!

Things have been more than a little ragged around here since "Life
Goes On" arrived, and I have not been able to give the record multiple
plays nor take notes. But I can say that I have suggested her Track
7, "George Orwell Where Are You," as apropos and excellent intro/outro
music for a national radio talk show featuring one of my favorite
hosts. I'd love to see and hear it work out.

And Linq's Track 1, "Where Will the Wild Ones Go," has an effect that
I was born to enjoy. The vocals have just the tiniest roughness to
them, bringing about what we call a "live" sound? Carl Wilson of The
Beach Boys spoke very favorably of a similar instrumental effect
creating great musical tension. Then, on "Where Will the Wild Ones
Go," comes a fantastic Brian Wilsonian gush of harmony, which sets off
against the prior vocals wonderfully. Tension and release: one of the
greatest and most important effects of musical expression.

So while I did not yet get a chance to give this disc all the plays it
deserves, I did find a lot to like and went so far as to suggest a cut
for consideration for national airplay.

Great album. Linq fans are going to want it.

Linq, in addition to her engaging music, has another thing that would
interest many of our readers: her off-stage name, Diane Lincoln. An
eastern Massachusetts Diane Lincoln was a very popular 1980s regional
country music star. She recorded for John Penny and his Belmont
Records label, and I believe he booked her. Whether Diane Lincoln is
playing out these days, I couldn't say. But interest in her music
remains. That I know for a fact, from personal experience. We have
received e-mail inquiries about her; and we helped, in a tiny way,
with research for a feature newspaper article about her, maybe a
couple years ago. Can't talk about one Diane Lincoln without bringing
in the other, who set a lot of country toes to tappin' in the 1980s
and whose fans are known to think of her fondly.

Do check out Linq's "Life Goes On." I plan to do the same, with the
volume at a little higher setting next time.

Well done.

TOM RUSH
The New Album

<> Tom Rush's fan newsletter is one of a handful of news e-mails which
arrived here powerfully late. If it is still timely, I will plan on
including much of Rush's newsletter in our next issue. Here is the TR
letter header, which ought to wet many appetites:

: : : February 13, 2009
: : : New CD now available at TomRush.com

Speaking in broad terms, this is the new studio album Rush has been
promising since the 1970s. Does this guy deliver or what?! The new
CD ought to be great.

Rush worked with Jim Rooney, whose recent production was masterful on
the "Gentle as the Sun" CD by Naomi Sommers.

GUITAR HERO
Record Reportedly Set

<> "I just caught on Rachel Maddow's show from (I think) Friday, and
they mentioned that a 14 year old just set a record score on Guitar
Hero on the 'highest level' of the game. From the footage they
showed, I'm assuming they mean Guitar Hero 3, with the song, 'Though
the Fire and Flames' by Dragonforce, on the Expert setting. There are
very few songs which allow you to play larger chunks of them by
holding one finger on the 'green fret' and using the other hand to
'tap' the Hammer Ons and Pull Offs. TTFAF is famous for this,
however, due to the 'Rubber Band Trick.' Think of it as a capo for
fake guitar games."

California This Month," February 10, 2009.

AND WELL DID . . Lissa Schneckenburger's "Song" CD deserve to make
these Top 10 lists for 2008. "Song" is not just one of the best
traditional folk albums we heard in 2008, it is one of the best we
have heard in the past SEVERAL years. "Song," as they say in radio,
takes its place beside classic traditional folk albums of the 70s,
80s, 90s, and Now! Schneckerburger's fans must love the new disc, and
it is her sparkling new calling card to the rest of the world.

NEW YORK (Billboard) - In 1993, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, the

our worse-ever president, James Buchanan. Second, though perfect by
no means, Abraham Lincoln was a simply wonderful human being, flaws

a claim we hear often about our presidents or much of anyone else for
that matter. I can think of a lot worse things to be monomaniacal
about than honesty. - Ed.

simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more

main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
