BRATTLEBORO, VT, February 28 - The extraordinary slowdown we
experienced last week may have been limited to that one week. This
time around, things were much more nearly normal; though even this
week, I was able to fit everything into this newsletter issue without
any great time pressure. So we are not entirely back to the
super-brisk pace of the past many months. Not yet anyway.
It seems to me there is pretty good variety this time around.

It is great to see releases by Antje Duvekot and Tom Rush on a list
that ordinarily is dominated by major label product, as well as by
national and international artists regardless of label affiliation.
Tom Rush, of course, has been and is a national artist. But it has
been so long since his last real-label album release that even knowing
observers may be forgiven for forgetting.

YAHOO NEWS HEADLINE
Friday Afternoon
: : : Economy shrinks 6.2%, the worst showing
: : : in a quarter-century
This headline, as far as it goes, is self-explanatory; and obviously
it is bad news. I'd like to call your attention, though, to the fact
that it is written in the present tense.
Judge for yourself; but to my experience, a great deal of historic
information - in this instance, fairly recent history, in other cases,
not so recent - is delivered by the media in the present tense, as if
this information represents what is going on in the here and now.
This confusion between past and present, in hard-news stories of great
importance, is very unhelpful and totally unnecessary.
Meanwhile, radio networks continue with their exhaustive emphasis on
economic gloom, even when the news is good. We get CBS and CNN radio
news in this town, plus a terrific program, Jim Bohannon's "America in
the Morning." My memory is not perfect as to which of these
broadcasts included any given story I have heard. But I believe it
was CNN that recently reported a second consecutive increase in the
index of leading economic indicators - happy day - followed by a
commentator whose remarks were exclusively negative ... in sharp
contrast to the news report he was supposedly commenting on.
Consumer spending is two-thirds of the economy. Whether the economy
is going into, mired in, or recovering from a recession is intimately
tied in with public optimism and consumer confidence, or lack thereof.
It seems to me that the media, or at least national radio, is not
just reporting economic news but is persistently adding much to a
negative outlook among the public. It can be a fine line between
reporting the news and making it, and it is my view that national
radio news outlets have strayed a little too far to the wrong side of
that line.
This, anyway, is my opinion.
On the brighter side of life, this very evening the Lizard Lounge is

MARK ERELLI
On the Subject of New Record Releases by
: : Antje Duvekot and
: : Jeffrey Foucault
"NEW PROJECTS:
<> "I wanted to let you all know of a couple projects I am proud to
have contributed to which are now seeing their official release.
"My friend Jeffrey Foucault just released his album of John Prine
covers, 'Shoot the Moon Right Between the Eyes,' which features me on
a couple songs playing electric guitar and lap steel. If you were not
familiar with Prine's work, you would never know that this is not a
new record of Foucault's own songs, so thoroughly does he inhabit them.
"Also on sale now is the latest from Antje Duvekot, 'The Near Demise
of the High Wire Dancer.' I played mandolin and sang harmonies on
this one, and I think a lot of folks will fall in love with this record.

PASTICHE: THE NEW ALBUM
Howdy family, friends, and fans!
<> The new [Pastiche] CD is finally out and ready for public
enjoyment. This has truly been an amazing long journey of four years,
when we first reunited for the Springa benefit in October 2004. Since
then, Ron, Ken, and myself had many many many intermittent writing
sessions, until we were satisfied with the new material to invite Brad
to complement our recording efforts, which took over a year to
fulfill. Is it possible that the older we get, the slower we move?
Or is it true that we were just watching the wheels go round & round
in a Life filled with making other plans? All in all, we hope you
might enjoy the new music! Here's the LowBudget official press
release. We also have a mySpace page
http://www.myspace.com/pastiche09
Best wishes always,
Mr. C.
New Pastiche album from Lowbudget Records!
Friday, February 20, 2009 10:08 AM
From: Tim Casey
LowBudget Records is proud to announce the release of Pastiche's "ARC"
[LBCD64], a collection of adult pop-rock tunes, swirling
mini-instrumentals, and two hypnotic remixes. Proudly produced by
PASTICHE [Ken Scales: multi-vocals, keyboards; Ron Marinick:
keyboards, piano, samplers; Mr. Curt: guitars, keyboards, vocals, fx;
and Brad Hallen: electric & acoustic basses], and Ray Boy Fernandes &
Doctor X (Tim Casey), it brings their past essence into a totally
contemporary context.
Pastiche was a top Boston group that thrilled local club-goers with
their dynamic theatrical shows (voted #1 band in the 1980 WBCN Rumble)
and hit recordings ("Talk Show", "Lock It Up", "Psychoblonde" - check
out this video of their 80s incarnation). They parted ways in 1983,
and it's pretty amazing that we have a new recording from them.
Visit the Arc page on our website and check out some mp3 previews.
The CD is available for $13.99 (includes S&H).
Thanks for tuning in, and keep watching the skies!

A Note from Tom Rush: It's an Album!
February 24, 2009
Gang,
<> Well, after thirty-five years gestation and ten days of hard but
joyful labor, an album is born! What I Know officially entered the
world today, February 24, 2009. You can see the baby pictures and hear
it's sweet cooings at a somewhat-secret page I've set up just for you
folks who are "on the list."
It is of course available at TomRush.com (along with its older
siblings and some cousins), but, because it has been put out on
Appleseed it will also be in stores — unlike the projects I've put out
on my own, which are closely held secrets between me and the folks
that come to my shows. If you find you just can't wait for the mail to
come, you can also run down to your favorite music spot and achieve
instant gratification. If they don't have it for some reason, yell and
scream and pound on the counter. Tell the judge Tom made you do it.
One of the nice things about having a real record* company put this
out is that it is actually being sent to reviewers and radio stations,
something that I always mean to do but never accomplish. Some very
nice things are being said about it in print (and on the net), and
it's wafting out on the airwaves even now. (I'd forgotten how much
work it is to properly introduce a new album to the world. Interviews,
radio shows, Lord! It's dangerously close to having a job. Or so I'd
imagine.)
And speaking of jobs, there's line of my favorite kind of work coming
up in a couple of weeks: Trenton, Annapolis, Vienna, VA and Mahwah,
NJ. I'll have the good luck to have keyboardist, vocalist and
saxophonist extraordinaire Joe Mennonna with me on this run, so it
will be a treat for me and hopefully for you!
Spring is coming!
Tom Rush
* I still use the terms "record" since, whatever the medium, it is a
recording, a record of something that happened; likewise I think
"album" still works since the CD is a collection of songs, and I
imagine the term came over from the photo album back when they first
started offering multiple 78s in one binder.
