BRATTLEBORO, VT, March 14 - We received an EXTREME amount of mail this week.
For incoming news e-mails, this could possibly be our biggest week ever. If
this development is a reaction to the unexpectedly slow spell we had two or
three weeks ago, it is a RADICAL reaction.
: : : Last issue I inserted a super-late note to the effect that we could
possibly find ourselves temporarily locked out of one or more of our Yahoo Mail
accounts right around the time I would normally be doing most of my work on this
newsletter issue. And in the middle of the Friday-Saturday overnight, after I
got online, I found that, yes indeed, one of our main newsletter accounts was
inaccessible. We can get into it now sometimes, but it is still hit or miss.
So, in trying to get this issue pulled together, we have been unavoidably
detained. But no matter how much or how little news I am able to work into this
issue, in the small amount of time left, rest assured that this has been one of
the news-iest weeks of our six-years-plus existence. A HECK OF A LOT is going
on out there.

FOX PASS AND MARS
AT THE PLOUGH AND STARS
Cambridge, Massachusetts
Saturday, March 14, 2009.
There aren't a lot of show announcements with rhythm 'n' rhyme, but this one's
got both: Fox Pass and Mars at the Plough and Stars. Tonight's Plough gig is
notable, in other ways, all around: vintage band (Fox Pass) playing - for the
first time! - a venerable Cambridge club (the Plough) with another NEMS favorite
band (Mars) which sports a great vintage sound.
Here is the Fox Pass-ionate scoop on tonight's show:

fan base this Boston-bred MC has cultivated along the way. This is the latest
chapter in Lif's prolific legacy of top-notch lyricism, an unmatched charisma

: : : Rocker Mould looks ahead as writer, DJ, musician
: : : Reuters - Fri Mar 13, 7:38 PM ET
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Facing 50, many musicians would either be looking at
retirement or resigning themselves to playing the county fair circuit. But Bob
Mould, who got his start in the '80s with the Minneapolis punk outfit Husker Du
and then fronted the more pop-rock-oriented Sugar in the '90s, is doing neither.

STAR TREK: THE FUTURE
<> As you may know, Star Trek, basically I guess with the characters of the
original television series, is being restarted. It could be that the name of
the new Star Trek project has not been released - Star Trek: The First
Generation? - but some have called this new enterprise "Star Trek: The Future."
Though I personally have not seen any clips, people who HAVE seen the clips that
have been shown are really enthusiastic: at least those who have written us.
This is a pleasant surprise, since it seems likely diehard Star Trek fans would
give any remake a very, very critical look. So far, this remake seems to be
passing the test at warp speed.

ROCK BAND: GHOSTBUSTERS
Some online discussion of the prospects of adding "Ghostbusters" to Rock Band:
http://kotaku.com/5169211/whos-rock-band-gonna-call-ghostbusters
<> You may have heard. There's a Ghostbusters game coming out. And what better
way to market it than by taking full advantage of one the industry's biggest
money-spinners, Rock Band?
Speaking during an interview with Eurogamer, Ray Parker Jr. - the genius behind
the "theme song" to the 1984 movie - says that's exactly what his people are
looking into. Asked whether he'd like to see the song included in either Guitar
Hero and/or Rock Band, Parker Jr. replied:
We were just talking about that, we're working on it now. I think they
should have Ghostbusters in Rock Band.
Being a short, slightly confusing response, don't take it too literally. We're
sure, with the money that's going to be flying around this game, he means Guitar
Hero as well (forget Activision's Ghostbusters "dumping"...it's Activision &
money we're talking about here). And that "we're working on it" doesn't mean "we
hope we can sort this out". It probably means "how much money can we make off
this?"

of the main ways we pick up readers.
.
<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though
our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably an easy majority of our
readers are based outside the six New England states. The great majority of
show listings would be of no interest at all to the great majority of our
readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the main point of an
item of this sort is that an act has a new record. The show being announced is
of secondary interest to us - if that - as far as the contents of our newsletter
goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show listings...
.
... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or location.
We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise confirming details.
