BRATTLEBORO, VT, March 21 - You folks are very popular. Did you know? Lots and
lots of music business professionals would like to reach you, and they are
sending us growing numbers of press releases, fan newsletters, and
announcements, as the young Elvis would say, tryin' to get to you.
The news e-mails we received this week were far, far in excess of what I could
find time to look through. So, judging by the senders' names and subject lines,
I guessed as to which messages would be newsiest. Guessed. And this week I
guessed wrong every single time. Not one of the e-mails I opened in the late
going had any news at all of the sorts we normally post here. Maybe I will do
better next time.
Fortunately, by that point I had some items pulled together already.
Here they are...

BANJO DAN AND THE MID-NITE PLOWBOYS
Fire in the Sugarhouse Tour
Starting March 27, 2009
"Fire in the Sugarhouse," the latest release, is one of the better albums by
Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys.
[Note: Why didn't these guys have sense enough to spell the last word in the
band name, "Ploughboys"?]
It's most striking quality, though, is how much the CD is in keeping with early
Banjo Dan albums. The new record, in fact, reminds me of the second Mid-Nite
Plowboys LP.
"High Time" (LP, Philo, Fretless Records FR 129, 1977)
It is terrific to hear these guys sounding so much like the band that interested
us in the first place. Not that the Plowboys have sounded at all bad in
betweentimes: just different. In fact, some really fine musicians have been
part of one lineup or another of this group over the years.
Anyway, let's let BDan speak.
<> "Greetings from Banjo Dan Central. It's still frigid here in Central Vermont
, but things are looking up: sugaring season is just around the corner. To
celebrate the time of sap and syrup Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys are
launching their 2009 season with the Fire in the Sugarhouse Tour. It's a series
of three special Vermont concerts, one south, one central and one north, in some
of Vermont's finest theatres. It all begins this month, so get out your muck
boots and read on!
"March 27: Hyde Park Opera House, Hyde Park , Vermont , 7:30 PM . This
beautiful little opera house is one of the most charming spaces I've ever seen.
It sits on the quiet main street of a little town a bit north of Montpelier ,
just across from the Second Congregational Church. And get this: all tickets
are just $10, at the door. It's our kickoff show for the year, and we can't
wait to hit the stage. The show is sponsored by radio station WLVB 93.9, and
will include a guest appearance by radio rep Mark Struhsacker, another fine
Vermont bluegrass man.
"April 18: Latchis Theatre, Brattleboro, Vermont, 7:30 PM. This is a classic,
classy concert hall we've been wanting to play for years. A terrific place to
hear live music, the Latchis is located at the corner of Main and Flat Streets
in downtown Brattleboro . You can get advance tickets for $13 at the Latchis
Hotel (same location) or through Brattleborotix.com, or at the door for $15.
We'd love to see a roomful of our VT, MA and NH friends at this one.
"May 9: Enosburg Opera House, Enosburg Falls, Vermont, 7:30 PM. Finally, we
head north to another fine old hall for our Fire in the Sugarhouse finale. The
Plowboys have always been hot in Franklin County , and this is another excellent
renovated opera house we love. You might be able to shed the mucks by May, so
pull the buckets and come join us for this one."
SOURCE: Dan Lindner, "Fire in the Sugarhouse Tour," March 6, 2009.
I AM NOT EQUALLY FAMILIAR . . with all of these venues. But if the others are
at all comparable to the Latchis Theater, this tour, though short, is a big one
for the Banjo Dan crew. - Ed.

COUNTRY MUSIC STANDARDS
<> One of our favorite e-mail correspondents has been asking friends and
acquaintances if they know of recent classic country music songs that have
become or, I guess, are becoming standards. The latest example that came to
mind for him - a country classic by any reckoning - is twenty-five years old or
more.
Personally, I am not aware of any country songs which are more recent and which
have already become, or are on their way to becoming, C&W standards, though I
would certainly like to know of some.
It would not be at all hard to think of songs in the past couple of decades that
SHOULD have become country standards. My musical hero Ian Tyson, up in Canada,
has written several.
It would be easy to picture "Win Again" by Boston's Swinging Steaks being sung
in country bars and in big concerts all across the country and around the world
... if only the people who perform in those places had ever heard it. Same for
"Wild and High," a spirited number, as you might guess from the title, by
Cambridge's John Lincoln Wright. But...
As for songs that ACTUALLY have become country music standards in recent years,
no examples are coming to my mind.
If you go to lots of country concerts or hang out in honky tonks and can name
recent songs that are covered really widely and often, please write in and set
me straight by way of
: : : FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com
of course converting this into an all-lowercase, conventional e-mail address.
AT A NEARBY SUPERMARKET . . I lately heard a country record that caught my
fancy. Apparently this cut is quite well known, but it was brand new to me. It
runs to the effect, Everybody wants to go to heaven, nobody wants to go now.
A 1970s song written by a folkie leaving New Hampshire for the US Southwest, for
me, could be a fantastic country classic. It is called "White Mountain
Goodbye."
And Boston's Didi Stewart - normally not the first hillbilly gal to come to mind
- nonetheless wrote a real country kicker. I can't get at the record at the
moment, but it seems to me it may be called "Something Wicked."
Great country is great music.

More About His Forthcoming
"Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away" CD
<> "It's been five years since Texas-based, New England-raised Slaid Cleaves
released an album of original material. Though he's never been described as
'prolific', Slaid has once again delivered an album full of uncommonly
fine-tuned songs built to stand the test of time. The new batch of songs on
'Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away,' Music Road Records, will hit the
streets April 21...."

SPECIAL EFFECTS
The First Generation
<> I HAVE BEEN READING A LOT . . about the arts and entertainment fields of the
mid-60s.
That's right, the EIGHTEEN-sixties.
Because so much of the special effects of our own times are quite high-tech and
may rely heavily on computers, it might come as a great surprise that special
visual and sound effects were a big, important, and popular part of theater and
other performing arts way back in time a century and a half ago and more. This
is easier to understand when one knows that among the main visual effects back
then was fire.
The good news is that fire is a visual effect that could be done very well even
in the early nineteenth century.
The bad news is that this is one prime reason why a lot of theaters burned down.
The visual effect could be fantastic, while safety efforts were often less
successful.
A way was found, in the 1860s, to project the appearance of a ghost onto a
theater stage, creating quite a spectacle; and plays featuring ghosts became all
the rage. One notice of the first in this series of NYC dramatic ghosts called
this deceased fellow Professor Pepper.
An 1850s English musician/showman whose New York City entertainments were HUGE
needed a certain sound effect for one of them, so he arranged, in advance, for a
noisy parade to pass by the concert hall at just the right moment in his
program.
Possibly, though, the greatest mid-nineteenth-century special effect I have read
about was created by a scenic artist and, one might imagine, a costumer. In a
scene of Shakespeare in which a character is supposed to walk away and disappear
into the gloom, the actor actually did seem to vanish right before the eyes of
members of a delighted audience.

TOM RUSH
More About His New
"What I Know" CD
<> "The new album ... seems to be going gangbusters. We're on the Americana
radio charts (not sure what kind of radio Americana is exactly, but I've been
away for a while). And the reviewers have been very, very kind - we've set up a
page at the website for you to peruse what the pundits are saying. You can't
believe everything you read, of course, but in this case I choose to. One of
the nicest parts is that each reviewer seems to have picked different cuts as
their favorites, confirming my feeling that we have 15 strong songs here. And
several have referred to me as feeling like 'an old friend,' which I like
because that's just how I feel."

BAY STATE ROCK COMPILATION LP
<> While researching a reader inquiry as to how to get recorded music by the
mid-1960s Massachusetts band, The Improper Bostonians, we found that Gemm.com
was listing, at that time, four copies of the old, essential "Bay State Rock"
compilation LP for sale. It seems highly likely this availability will interest
others among our readers. Cuts by either Teddy and the Pandas or The Ramrods
alone would make this vinyl disk well worth owning. We have received recent
inquiries - plural - about "Set You Free This Time" by the Improper Bostonians,
which is on this various artists album. And personal favorites also on "Bay
State Rock" include "Bright Lit Blue Skies" by The Ramrods and "The Lovelight"
by Teddy and the Pandas.

Mark Sandman Project Presents
KRIS DELMHORST
March 29, 2009
The Center for Arts at the Armory
Somerville, Massachusetts
We are proud to bring our friend Kris Delmhorst to our new space at The Center
for Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA.
With a back catalog that includes two darkly rollicking roots records produced
by our own Billy Conway and recorded at Hi-n-Dry (2001's' Five Stories' and
2003's 'Songs For a Hurricane'), as well as the 2006 release 'Strange
Conversations', a vibrant collection of Americana songs inspired by the work of
famous poets and 2008's lo-fi 'Shotgun Singer', Kris Delmhorst has built a
thriving career and a devoted following from the ground up, without major label
hype. The same independence of spirit that led Delmhorst to spend some early
years working on subsistence farms, cooking on a schooner off the coast of
Maine, or hitch-hiking the back roads of Ireland with a fiddle on her back, is
evident in the arc of her musical evolution: a willingness to work on her own
terms and her own time. Along the way, she's parlayed a decade of successful
cross country and Trans-Atlantic touring into one of the most distinct voices in
American music.
Long-loved in the Boston/Cambridge/Somerville area, and often accompanied by
mutual friends , Kris will be performing at the "new" Hi-n-Dry to help raise
much needed funds for the Mark Sandman Music Project.
The Mark Sandman Music Project, partnering with Hi-n-Dry, is in the new Armory
Arts Center in Somerville. We are working on creating opportunities for young
people to play and record music together. Participation in music is a
community-building experience that also builds the self. We are striving to
provide kids the means, the place, the mentors, and the materials to play. Our
theory is simple: creative collaboration creates community. When we help kids be
creative, we seed the community with creative thinkers. We think that's
important and we hope you do, too!!
We look forward to you coming to see Kris play, as well as joining us in our new
space. The show is March 29, 2009, with doors at 4pm and the show beginning
around 4:30pm. Tickets are 30. with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the
Sandman Music Project. Dinner is included and will be served immediately
following the show.
Tickets are available IN ADVANCE ONLY at
https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/58562.
As this beautiful space is small, tickets are quite limited so do follow through
on your desires and purchase early!

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
