CD New Releases Available Tuesday, March 31st
COCKBURN, BRUCE-Slice O Life: Live Solo-$13.88
COHEN, LEONARD-Live In London-$15.99
<> Cohen's old "Live Songs" LP was great, so this listing for "Live in London,"
is promising. A new release from Leonard Cohen is always welcome.
DEGRAW, GAVIN-Free-$9.99
<> I always love the advertising phrase, "free ... you just pay the shipping."
Well, which is it: free or we have to pay something?" This Gavin DeGraw item

Gavin DeGraw, we expect it is energy-packed.

<> On one of this area's "Eighties, Nineties and Now" radio stations, it is
surprising how many 1980s records that are currently playing seem influenced not
so much by Fleetwood Mac in general as by Stevie Nicks in particular. She may
have had a bigger impact than I realized at the time.

RECORD RELEASES
By New England Artists
<> As wonderful a service as Newbury Comics provides with its weekly list of
record releases, there are lots fewer entries than I would have imagined of
recordings by artists based in the Northeast and performing mostly in the
Northeast.
Do us a favor, would you? If there are recent recordings you really like by
artists of the northeastern United States, e-mail us the basic details at our
: : : FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com
address, only convert this into an all-lowercase conventional e-mail address.
We mostly use a format suggested by Mickey O'Halloran.
Lonesome Brothers
"The Last CD" (CD, Captivating Music, 2008)
Various Artists
"Signature Sounds Tenth Anniversary Celebration"
(DVD, Signature Sounds, 2005)
Sometimes I will also include the catalog number after the label name.
I don't know yet exactly what we will do for listing digital downloads (Dig. LP?
Dig. EP?); but it seems to me when we get e-mails notifying us of them, a format
will emerge fast enough. Possibly
Mapei
"The Cocoa Butter Diaries" (Dig. EP, Downtown Records, 2009)
[Mapei is an artist of Rhode Islandic birth. Press release posted below.]
We are very happy to copy listings here from Newbury Comics. It would just be
great to balance things out a bit so a few more regional artists are represented
in this corner of cyberspace.

CROOKED STILL
In Vermont's News
: : : Greenhoe Theatre
: : : Landmark College
: : : Putney, Vermont
: : : Saturday, April 4, 2009
: : : 7:30 p.m.
HEADLINE:
"Crooked Still With Sam Amidon at Greenhoe Theatre"
The Original Vermont Observer
Friday
<> Nifty photo of Aoife O'Donovan and company on the cover of the latest issue
of our Original Vermont Observer newspaper, which arrived in our postal mail
Friday afternoon.
I have not personally been in the Greenhoe Theatre, since it was given that
name. It is called after one or more members of the local Greenhoe family, of
which my former co-worker Barbara Greenhoe is a member. It seems to me, though,
that this hall is a renovated version of the old Windham College theater,
Landmark College being situated on what was once the Windham College campus. If
this is correct, the Greenhoe Theatre is the same spot where I heard Sonny Terry
and Brownie McGhee, after those guys recorded and released an electric album and
during their electric tour in support of it.
I always thought Brownie McGhee would sound terrific on electric guitar, and boy
did he ever! He put on a subtle but totally amazing show.
Going entirely on memory ... Brownie McGhee has an important distinction in rock
'n' roll history. Atlantic Records was the great label, with its own catalog
plus others, notably including Stax/Volt. Originally, Atlantic had success with
jazz recordings. The label's very first rhythm 'n' blues hit, "Drinkin' Wine
Spo Dee Oh Dee Oh" was by brother Stick McGhee, and Brownie played guitar on
that record.
Helping get Atlantic started in the field of releasing hit R&R/R&B records was
no small thing.
But I digress...
Landmark College's Greenhoe Theatre ought to be a terrific place to hear a
concert, and Crooked Still ought to sound fantastic there.
Go straight. Go crooked. Go to Landmark College's Greenhoe Theatre!

AND PETE SUTHERLAND
"Song as Poetry" Concert and Workshop
: : Plus
A Show at Our Very Own Spiritual Home
<> Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson - the group, Hungrytown - sent us information
about a great-sounding event, "Song as Poetry."
All week I have personally been singing a song by the superstar of Scottish
poetry, Robert Burns, "Caw the Ewes."
: : : Fair and lovely as thou art
: : : Thou hath stol' my very heart...
So I am really primed for "Song as Poetry."
All of Robert Burns' poems were set to music, and they come with some wonderful
tunes. At one time, right here in Vermont, Jean Redpath was recording and
releasing every last Robert Burns song-poem. I don't recall whether she ever
finished this project.
Here is what we were sent on the subject of "Song as Poetry" by the good folkies
of Hungrytown:

MUDHENS

A Mudhens Reunion!
Says Carla Ryder:
<> "After quite some time, I'll be sharing the stage once again with my old pals
Pete Chandler and Tom Groleau from the Mudhens. We'll be doing a short and
stripped down set of tunes from the vintage Mudhen's collection, newer Mudhen's
catalog and CRB. It's been lots of fun playing together again, rehearsals sound
great and this should be a really good night of music as the bands that follow
are stellar. This is my first show back after having twins in November, so I'm
looking forward to seeing lots of you. It's an early set so get there on time!

<> Susie Ghahremani (gair-uh-mah-nee) - ex-New Englander, artist, one-woman band

slowed somewhat by the breaking of her shoulder. Worse yet, this happened on
her drawing-hand side.

SPECIAL EFFECTS, NINETEENTH-CENTURY STYLE
<> Last issue I mentioned the importance of special effects in many
nineteenth-century playhouses and other types of entertainment venues. The
workings of the Ghost effect, which was all the rage in New York City in the mid
1860s, was a carefully guarded trade secret.
NEMS readers who weathered the storm known as the 1960s, as well as those who
are conversant in all things Psychedelic Era, might be interested to know that
the original of this 1860s Ghost was named "Professor Pepper."
On Friday, I happened upon the following claim in a mid-1840s advertisement for
a museum of curiosities similar to the famed American Museum of P.T. Barnum:
The New York Museum was then presenting "Mr. Winchell the unequaled comic
lecturer whose rapid change of voice, dress and manner are so astonishingly
quick, and whose powers of imitation and transformation are so great as to
deceive each and every looker-on in the Lecture Room."
Here's betting watching that guy, in his transformation scenes, was a lot of
fun.

MAPEI
Rhode Island Native Has Released
"The Cocoa Butter Diaries" EP
MAPEI'S DEBUT DIGITAL EP, THE COCOA BUTTER DIARIES, OUT NOW ON DOWNTOWN RECORDS
NEW EP ON ITUNES
World: meet Mapei. A fitting introduction to a continent / city / genre-hopping
artist whose hybrid style of music is ripe for fans across the globe.
In 2007, Mapei recorded the thumping, sparse, laser-age-funk track, Leader of
the Pack which prompted Downtown Records to sign her. Her debut EP, The Cocoa
Butter Diaries, with Leader of the Pack and three other tracks, was produced
entirely by DJ Mehdi (of Ed Banger fame) and Mapei. While electronic at their
base, these tracks carry complex vocal harmonies, punk sensibilities and a bold
hip-hop swagger.
Born and raised her young life in Rhode Island, Mapei found she had an aptitude
for music way before her family packed up and left New England for Stockholm,
Sweden. She spent years of moving back and forth between Stockholm and
Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood, all the while performing with hip-hop groups
in Sweden, and singing on house tunes here in the States. She started writing
tunes that married the club music she was hearing around the globe with rap, at
around the same time as another club-rap pioneer, Spank Rock, was doing the same
thing stateside.
The Cocoa Butter Diaries are available now on ITunes.

.
<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though
our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably an easy majority of our
readers are based outside the six New England states. The great majority of
show listings would be of no interest at all to the great majority of our
readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the main point of an
item of this sort is that an act has a new record. The show being announced is
of secondary interest to us - if that - as far as the contents of our newsletter
goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show listings...
