BRATTLEBORO, VT, April 18 - Is it just me, or have an uncommon number of former
members of New England's popular music community resurfaced lately? At least
two of these acts are represented in this newsletter issue: a mid-1980s
Burlington, Vermont rock band to be named later, as well as Boston's Charlie
Farren, who has never really gone away but who has what looks to be a truly
special show coming up later in Spring 2009.
.

Why waste time, let's get right to it . . . Today, Saturday, April 18, 2009, is
Record Store Day!

We were notified of this by Newbury Comics, a record store that is celebrating
the occasion.

Gee, Newbury Comics might have Charlie Farren records...

Happy Record Store Day!
.

In the best of all possible worlds, I would compile more of what we've got into
this newsletter issue. But last issue took three to four hours between the time
I thought I sent it and the time it was actually mailed by Yahoo. Also, on
Monday, Yahoo Groups was shut down for "maintenance" of some sort. I have no
idea what to expect until I mail - or try to mail - this newsletter issue.
Unfortunately, the distinction between "maintenance" and "mayhem" is not all
that great. So I am going to mail this as is, and it will thus come through a
bit abbreviated.

Here are a few items I pulled together really quickly at the last minute:

<> Don White has an interesting tale which I will work in next time if I can.
In short, he just got back the rights to some of his recordings, which implies
that he was without these rights for some time. We know more than a few
musicians who are and have been in a similar situation and have found it quite
frustrating. One of the recordings Don White just bought the rights to I
believe to be among his most popular: a live album recorded at the Somerville
Theatre in Somerville, Massachusetts. He is making these recordings available
once again to his fans.

<> The album that, to my mind, gave Josh Ritter an important early boost,
"Golden Age of Radio," is being reissued as a deluxe 2-CD set. His
announcement, as best I remember, unfortunately omitted what label is doing the
re-releasing, which would have been handy information to have. Nonetheless, a
recording that was quite important to Josh Ritter's young career is getting a
splashy rebirth.

<> My list of 2009 New England-connected record releases, which have been noted
somehow in one or more issues of this newsletter, is now as complete as I can
get it. Unless I missed something as I skimmed through back issues. There were
a couple exceptions: items that seemed just a little too vague to me.
Otherwise, I've got this list together. It it important to give it a close look
before I'll get much idea of its best use. This list is interesting in part
because it is reasonably varied. Oh, there are some really big holes, such as
no 2009 country music record releases . . . on our list at least. But it still
covers a decent amount of stylistic territory. Our list is also interesting
because of the highly varied ways in which this music has been made available to
the public, from good old CD releases, to YouTube videos, to high-grade vinyl,
to free downloads of the month... Pretty much "you name it." Music is being
issued about every way possible. Has some retro soul out there released a new
8-Track? Wouldn't be surprised. It is a brave new world for getting one's
music into the ears of fans for them to enjoy.
.

This surely was a week of heavy losses in the field of New England sports, with
the death of Massachusetts native and resident Mark Fidrich, Danny Ainge's heart
attack, and I am choking on at least one other sad story. This next thing is on
an entirely different plane, of course; but Tuesday's Red Sox game ran so long
that I was up and on my feet and getting started on my day Wednesday well before
Tuesday's game was over. And then after the bullpen gave the Red Sox one heck
of a game, the Sox went ahead and lost a heartbreaker.

Anyway, we wish Danny Ainge all the best.

And may Mark Fidrich - affectionately known as "The Bird" - rest in peace.

We will always remember a spirited Fidrich talking to the baseball and whatever
it was he did during games that involved regrooming the pitcher's mound.

And though Ainge has given us a lot of memorable moments, the thing that may be
hardest to forget is an on-the-court scrap he got into with Tree Rollins who was
approximately seventeen times bigger than him. Gee, I couldn't believe my eyes
when Ainge tackled Rollins. Mercy! Danny Ainge is one brave fellow.
.

Yahoo has been having serious technical troubles, as some of you may have
witnessed. The FredRemainsLost e-mail account, where we receive all our news
e-mails, was out of service one weekend a few weeks ago for extensive
maintenance. It is only working slightly better these days AFTER being
serviced. This Yahoo Groups account was shut down for maintenance on Monday.
Time will tell what came of it. Last Saturday, from the time I clicked the
button to send Issue 322 until the time it was actually mailed, between three
and four hours passed. Jeepers, creepers, electronic snail mail!

RECORD RELEASES THIS WEEK
Listed by Newbury Comics, Excerpted by Us

CD New Releases Available Tuesday, April 14th

BECK-One Foot In The Grave (Deluxe Edition)-$12.88
<> We did not receive a press release on this, but we understand that "One Foot
in the Grave" is a reissue featuring over a dozen bonus tracks. THAT is a pretty
big bonus.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE-Open Door EP-$4.99
<> We didn't get far enough to learn the answer, but the question did arise as
to whether this EP may be a reissue. Memory can be weak.

DEREK TRUCKS BAND-Already Live-$6.99

DEYOUNG, DENNIS (STYX)-One Hundred Years From Now-$9.99
<> We were once sent a CD of orchestrated performances (as in, symphonic
performances) of Styx material featuring Dennis DeYoung. The music was not quite
my style, but it was really easy to see how it could draw a very large audience.

DOE, JOHN & SADIES-Country Club-$10.88
EASY STAR ALL-STARS-Easy Star's Lonely Hearts Dub Band-$11.88

GRAND DUCHY (FRANK BLACK)-Petits Fours-$9.99
<> We are not totally up-to-date on Black Francis/Frank Black, once and future
Pixies frontguy, but evidently Grand Duchy is a project involving himself and
his wife, Violet Clark. So now we have two colors at work, black and violet. If
you should research Grand Duchy online, get ready for the full range of
helpfulness, from not at all to not bad. It seems at least possible - possibly
even likely - that this group name is somehow a takeoff on the title of a great
nineteenth-century opera bouffe hit, "The Grande Duchesse of Gerolstein."

GREEN, AL-Greatest Hits-$14.99
GUY, BUDDY-Definitive Buddy-$7.99
JONES, FREDDY BAND-Time Well Wasted-$11.88
MEDESKI, MARTIN & WOOD-Radiolarians II-$12.88
METRIC-Fantasies-$10.88
NILE, WILLIE-House Of A Thousand Guitars-$15.99
OASIS-Definitely Maybe-$12.99
RITTER, JOSH-Golden Age Of Radio (2 CD)-$10.88

SILVERSUN PICKUPS-Swoon-$7.99
<> "The Silversun Pickups are hard to describe, except maybe as the Pixies if
they went 'shoegaze.' There's a definite Boston alternative sound in there,
somewhere. They've had a track on the Rock Band 2 disc and two songs that were
downloadable, so they almost certainly have some mainstream appeal. Plus,
they're a very good act. I need more of their music." SOURCE: Stephen Lewis,
E-Mail Message, April 15, 2009.

SIMON & GARFUNKEL-Live 1969-$11.88
<> The title of this S&G album certainly indicates that it is a live recording.
What little I have read, though, does not explicitly say that ALL of it was
recorded live. So I don't quite know. You may. Apparently this was issued in
2008 as a Starbucks exclusive. Release for a more general distribution came this
week. We understand that much of the material, presented on this disc in mostly
previously unreleased recordings, was intended for the Simon and Garfunkel album
that was planned to come right after "Bridge Over Troubled Water." A tough
record to follow. The exceptions, we are told, are two live cuts which came out
long ago on a greatest hits album that I have. Relying on memory, this live
performance of "Kathy's Song" was great, while "For Emily, Whenever I May Find
Her" may have been slightly overblown. Either way, these two tracks are well
worth having.

TESTAMENT-Live In Eindhoven-$13.99

WU-TANG CLAN-Think Diff. Instumentals-$9.99
<> It is a bit puzzling, but each time the Wu Tang Clan came up in our
file-search hitlists, it was in connection with Apollo Sunshine. Go figure. But
Apollo Sunshine did open a Wu Tang Clan show once, and apparently for some
reason the connection stuck.

ROCK BAND DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT
For April 21, 2009, and April 23 Release

We received this with a note about its irony, since the names, Dennis DeYoung
and Styx, for some reason came up several times this week.

<> To tie in with one of the current Rock Band sponsored tours, there's a sweet
7 track pack of REO Speedwagon and Styx songs to whet your classic rock whistle.
Not enough? Top it off with a Hautewerk 3 pack for dessert! Here's the track
listing:

REO Speedwagon - Riding the Storm Out
REO Speedwagon - Roll with the Changes
REO Speedwagon - Take It on the Run
Styx - Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)
Styx - Renegade
Styx - Too Much Time On My Hands
Styx / REO Speedwagon - Can't Stop Rockin'
Hautewerk - Alone in My Head
Hautewerk - I Know Where You Came From
Hautewerk - Stop Start Again

All tracks are master recordings. The Styx tracks are recent re records, and the
Styx and REO Speedwagon collaboration Can't Stop Rockin' was recorded in
anticipation of their tour together this year.

Release Dates:
Tuesday, April 21, 2009 (Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360®)
Thursday, April 23, 2009 (PlayStation®Store)

PASTURES OF PLENTY
Thursday, May 21, 2009
At Club Passim
Cambridge Massachusetts
Featuring Mark Erelli, Alastair Moock, and Deb Pasternak

This announcement came in the latest Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem mailing:

<> "May 21 . . . Rani Arbo, Deb Pasternak and Mark Erelli will appear together
at Pastures of Plenty, Alstair Moock's monthly in-the-round extravaganza at Club
Passim, Cambridge, Massachusetts."

http://www.moock/pastures.html

SOURCE: Daisy Mayhem, "Daisy Mayhem Spring News," April 17, 2009.

DEB PASTERNAK . . is a name I personally have not seen for a good long while.
October 4, 2003 is the last time her name appeared in this newsletter. Whoa!
So her appearance at this May 21 Pastures of Plenty production could prove to be
a pretty big event. Moockian mayhem and a renewed Pasternak attack? Something
like that. This ought to be a fantastic show. - Ed.

GUITAR HERO AND ROCK BAND

<> A question came up, in a way, as to why we have as much material as we do
about music games, particularly Rock Band. Well, we know for a fact that we
have readers who are interested in Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and I have
solicited information about these games. News about them is more plentiful than
I would have imagined. This material is included here for people who are
curious about the world of music gaming. People who are not interested are
advised to scroll right on by.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are of terrific interest to many of the readers on the
younger end of our age range. Enthusiasm abounds!

Harmonix is the company that developed these games, and our readers include
ex-employees plus others who have family, friends, and band mates currently or
formerly on the Harmonix staff. I swear one reader told me he plays on a
baseball or softball team or in a league with an Harmonix worker.

The history of Harmonix isn't clear enough to my mind for me to give it in
detail from memory. But I do know that it spun out of a revered Boston rock
band, Tribe.

Until someone put up a website dedicated to Tribe, we received more e-mails
about this outfit than about any other act. Tribe may very well have more
followers today than when the group was still together. Tribe is a very, very
popular band.

One of my favorite people, who was then employed at Harmonix, once caught a ride
with one of the company's top people: a former member of Tribe. Not far from
her Brighton destination, as I understand it, he pointed out a house called The
Home. Not only was this Tribe's headquarters, but also it seems to me that a
big part of the point of the story was that much of the impetus behind Harmonix
came out of The Home.

The success of Harmonix and of these games very much has origins in Boston's
rock community.

No doubt my account of all this is far from perfect.

Many Boston rock acts have been represented by cuts in Guitar Hero and Rock Band
soundtracks and supplemental downloadable content (DLC). Many of our readers
will remember that Bostonian in good standing David Minehan of The
Neighborhoods, The Stardarts, and Woolly Mammoth Recording Studio gave Guitar
Hero credit for introducing the music of The Neighborhoods to a new, young
audience.

A lot of us are interested in Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Harmonix, but not
necessarily all for the same reasons. And this interest is why material is
presented here.

It is remiss of me to not bring in these connections from time to time and to
not have this story any straighter in my head than I do. But just to show that
I am not totally off in this telling, here is a Boston Phoenix entry from a
Google hitlist of this (Saturday) morning:

News & Features | An axe to grind
Harmonix vice-president of product development Greg LoPiccolo and Guitar Hero
audio lead Eric Brosius played together in the Boston alt-rock band Tribe. ...
www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/news_features/other_stories/multi-page/documents/05\
133995.asp - 29k

[This is exactly the way the item appeared in my Google hitlist, and I am not
editing it. Please note, then, that in the Phoenix Web address, the "http://"
part is missing.]

Oftentimes, to tell the truth, I would post an item in this newsletter even if I
thought it would interest only one person. I have done it before many times and
will do it again. But this topic of rock 'n' roll gaming is definitely of
reasonably broad interest among our readers.

AND JUST IN: . . We were just told that the Guitar Hero World Tour guitar bundle
is being offered this week for 49.99 USD plus shipping and tax, by Toys R Us
both in-store and online. The list price, we understand, is $99.99, so this
comes in at half price. The current state of the economy plus a flood of
product may be making this a buyers' market.

Normally I do not include information which is so commercial in nature; but in
this instance, it seems timely.

THE CUTS
1980s Burlington, Vermont Band

<> This week we received an e-mail from Frank Egan of The Cuts, one of my own
favorite 1980s rock bands out of Burlington, Vermont, on the strength of the
following record:

Cuts
"The Cuts" (LP, Doris, Joyce, and Rita Inc., 1985)

According to Egan's message, The Cuts are still together, or are together again,
and are making music, with a new recording in the works, a possible documentary,
and hopes for a website.

We will let you know more once we know more.

RAY LAMONTAGNE

<> In a recent press release for his regular radio broadcast, Charlie Gaylord,
who issues those fantastic Pine Tree State compilations, "Greetings From Area
Code 207," made mention that Maine's Ray Lamontagne is relocating to
Massachusetts.
.

JEN TRYNIN
Rock 'n' Roll Fairy Tale

<> We have not received a mailing for many months from 1990s Boston alt-rock
singer-songwriter Jen Trynin, and we wonder what she is working on these days.

Lately when I spoke of her book to one of our regular correspondents, he said he
didn't know about it.

So, here is a bibliographic citation for the Jen Trynin book, the first
full-length production penned by Jen, in case you, too, missed it:

Jen Trynin. "Everything I'm Cracked Up To Be: A Rock and Roll Fairy Tale." 1st
ed. Orlando, FL: Harcourt. 2006.

Apparently Trynin has done very well with this critically acclaimed work.

THE QUERY MAN COMETH

We send these queries out to you. If you have one or more answers, please
e-mail us by way of

: : : FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com

only convert it into an all-lowercase, conventional e-mail address.

REMAINS

<> Of the several sets of basic Remains recordings in our collection, this one,
in my opinion, is best:

Remains
"Barry and the Remains"
(CD, Sony Music Entertainment, Epic Legacy EGK 46926, 1991)

Do you have a Remains compilation that you favor over this one?

A much newer set, titled "The Remains," which I have not actually seen nor
heard, replaced "Barry and the Remains," the compilation noted here.

SWINGING STEAKS

<> The Boston band, The Swinging Steaks, has a track, "Smile," on a Minnesota
fundraiser compilation. Have you heard this cut? Have you heard the song
performed live? Do you like it?

GMAIL E-MAIL

<> Some time ago, I signed up for a GMail account as an alternative to the
e-mail service attached to this Yahoo Group; but the GMail account has proven to
be a genuine lemon. Why that one should be plagued with problems - extremely
frequent error messages - while other GMail accounts are not is beyond me. But
I have tried using GMail from several quite different computer systems with
equally dismal results on each. Is anyone out there experienced with GMail's
problem reporting system? Do you have any suggestions as to what we can do to
get our account working? GMail has some real advantages, not least of which is
that it runs much, much faster than Yahoo Mail. It is also far superior in the
way it handles attachments. But there is no way I can take receiving error
message after error message after error message. Last time I tried mailing an
attachment, I got server error messages without end. I finally gave up. If you
have expertise in the area of GMail remedies, please e-mail us about it.
.

GLENN MILLER

<> I hope at least some of you caught a great broadcast on "Coast to Coast AM"
early this week - in the Sunday-Monday overnight, as I recall - about the
wartime activities of big band leader Glenn Miller, along with a new and
radically different account, by Hunton Downs, of his death. Evidently the old
official story that Miller is missing and presumed dead following his plane's
1944 plunge into the English Channel is totally false. I, personally, actually
fell for the version, which came out decades later, to the effect that a Royal
Air Force airplane accidentally bombed Glenn Miller's plane over the English
Channel.

Here is basic information about the book discussed this week on "Coast to
Coast":

Hunton Downs. "The Glenn Miller Conspiracy: The Secret Story of His Life - and
Death." Creative Book Pub. Intl. 2008.

The general idea of the Hunton Downs book is that Miller, who had a military
rank of major, who spoke German quite well, and who was very well known in
Germany for his radio broadcasts from London, was involved in peace
negotiations. At Hitler's instructions, Miller was captured; and Nazi torture
resulted in his death, though accounts differ as to whether Miller died in
Europe in 1944/1945 or in the United States in 1955.

This was a very interesting program.

being more productive employees, perked up a number of our readers. Glad we

<> I have no idea what the Lincoln cancer theory is.

There is a certain photograph of the front of the White House, shot in 1865,
that, if one looks close enough and has the aid of modern technology, shows a
man standing there who turns out to be President Lincoln. One might need to see
an enhanced representation of this photo to fully understand its significance.
But this is still the earliest known photograph showing a United States

CHICK SINGER NIGHT CELEBRATES IT'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY
AS THE LONGEST RUNNING NATIONAL TALENT SHOWCASE!

CHICK SINGER NIGHT (CSN) BOSTON
CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF
KEEPING THE ARTS ALIVE IN OUR SCHOOLS

SPECIAL 5TH ANNIVERSARY SHOWCASE EVENT
AT THE LEGENDARY
JOHNNY D'S
(17 HOLLAND STREET, DAVIS SQUARE – SOMERVILLE)

SATURDAY MAY 30, 2009
(3:30 – 7:00 PM)

Having just returned from a stunningly successful 20th Anniversary Concert
featuring Paula Cole at Malibu's beautiful Pepperdine University, Boston's Vykki
Vox and Jennifer Truesdale are pleased to announce the 5th Anniversary Showcase
of the Boston CSN Chapter. Please join us for a special Saturday afternoon
showcase and anniversary party at the legendary JOHNNY D'S (17 Holland Street,
Davis Square – Somerville) on Saturday, May30th from 3:30 – 7:00 PM. All profits
from the evening will be donated directly to music programs in local public
schools.

Did you know that research has shown that kids who are involved in music score
better on the SATs? Did you know that musical study develops critical thinking
and self discipline skills, improves a child's early cognitive development,
basic math and reading abilities, self-esteem and school attendance. Did you
know that year after year, budgetary cuts are causing music programs in many
public schools to be cut back and in some cases eliminated altogether? For 5
years, Chick Singer Night Boston has been doing its part to help reverse this
alarming trend. Come help us celebrate!

Hosted by The Vykki Vox Band and Jennifer Truesdale, the showcase will feature
hot up and coming artists: Mary Beth Maes, Suzanne McNeil, Undertow, Leah
Bridge, Cassey Malloy, Sydney Shepherd, Colleen Nicholas, Beth MacGray and
special guest Marc Bridge - CSN's Are You Man Enough feature – who will be
debuting the release of his new CD. Several of the featured artists are students
themselves and directly receiving the benefits of these vital school music
programs. This special afternoon show is open to all ages, however, anyone under
21 must be accompanied by a parent and have a reservation for dinner.

Founded 20 years ago in Chicago, with the purpose of assisting community arts
and other charitable causes around the country, Chick Singer Night has been
rapidly expanding with support from NAMM, Berklee College of Music, Jeannie Deva
Voice Studios, The Real School of Music and many other local and national
organizations. CSN Chapters now include: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago,
Nashville, Las Vegas, Boston, many other major US cities and is now going
international with a new chapter in Stockholm, Sweden! CSN is supported by the
national non-profit organization, Breathe - A Foundation for the Artist.
Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, Paula Cole, Megan Mullally, Lisa Loeb,
Mandy Moore, Paul Shaffer and MTV have all been supportive of CSN and many are
continuing to take notice of this growing organization.

While the non-profit CSN Boston Showcase Series follows the basic guidelines of
the National Chick Singer Night organization, developed 20 years ago by LA's
Lori Maier, CSN Boston has the added purpose of raising both funds for, and
awareness of the importance of music programs in our public schools and to date
has donated over $6,000 to local schools. CSN Boston, in cooperation with Johnny
Ds, has also created the first area showcases featuring our up and coming young
talent, giving them a much-deserved start in the music industry.

So come on down to Johnny D's and enjoy their great food, comfortable atmosphere
and some amazingly talented performers of all ages. Tickets are $10 and are
available at the door. (Plan to come early as we do expect this show to sell
out). VIP tickets are also available for $40. VIP tickets include a buffet
dinner, 2 drinks and preferred seating for the show. VIP tickets may be
purchased in advance by calling 617-633-5286. And remember, all proceeds will
go directly to music programs in our local public schools. For more information
Call Johnny D's at (617) 776-2004. Plenty of free parking is available and Red
Line access as well.

CSN is an all-ages show. Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by an adult and
must have reservations for dinner.

CSN is an ongoing series. For more info on artist submissions, please contact:

GUITAR HERO: SMASH HITS

Activision and Neversoft have so flooded the market that there are a lot of
deals on the various Guitar Hero bundles. Wal-Mart currently has the full World
Tour bundle for half price.

Not content with that, however, they are releasing Guitar Hero: Smash Hits
this summer. It will reprise many songs from the first three Guitar Hero titles
plus the "Rocks the 80s" expansion. Unlike many of the original game's
versions, these will be masters. Unlike all the prior versions, these will be
mixed for bass, vocals and drums as well as guitar. That leaves out Iron
Maiden's "Number of the Beast," and probably several others were the masters
are unsuitable for separating those four elements. However, the official
website has confirmed inclusions like Ozzy's "Bark at the Moon," Kansas' "Carry
on, Wayward Son," Skynyrd's "Freebird," and more. An IGN look at the game
lists Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll," Queen's "Killer Queen," Alice in
Chains' "Them bones," And a handful of others.

However, with only 48 songs on the disc, Smash Hits will likely leave out a
lot of faves.

Here's the 12 so far, as Kotaku reports:

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though
our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably an easy majority of our
readers are based outside the six New England states. The great majority of
show listings would be of no interest at all to the great majority of our
readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the main point of an
item of this sort is that an act has a new record. The show being announced is
of secondary interest to us - if that - as far as the contents of our newsletter
goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show listings...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or location.
We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise confirming details.
