BRATTLEBORO, VT, April 25 - This turned out to be a slow week, relatively
speaking. Evidently things were equally slow at Yahoo Music News.
We don't have a lot, but at least be sure we'll give you what we've got.
(Nod to Sonny Bono)
Record releases are a big exception to the rule. Lots of records were issued
this week including some really good ones.

RECORD RELEASES THIS WEEK
Listed by Newbury Comics, Excerpted by Us
CD New Releases Available Tuesday, April 21st
BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY-How Big Can You Get?-$9.99
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY/WYLDE, ZAKK-Skullage: Greatest Hits-$9.99
<> Zakk Wylde may be of interest for a couple reasons. He is Ozzy Osbourne's
guitarist - probably the thing he is most known for. Wylde is also a playable
character in Guitar Hero: World Tour.
BLIND GUARDIAN-Battalions Of Fear (Remaster)-$12.88
BLIND GUARDIAN-Tokyo Tales (Remaster)-$12.88
BLIND GUARDIAN-Somewhere Far Beyond (Remaster)-$12.88
<> Advance word is that these remasters are quite good.
BOOKER T.-Potato Hole-$9.99
<> The positive influence of Booker T. and the MGs and the larger group on rock
'n' roll was vast. I always choke on the name of the larger group.
COMMANDER CODY-Dopers, Drunks And Everyday Losers-$9.99
DEPECHE MODE-Sounds Of The Universe-$7.99
DEPECHE MODE-Sounds Of The Universe (CD/DVD)-$17.99
DEPECHE MODE-Sounds Of The Universe (4-Piece Box Set)-$84.99
GREAT WHITE-Rising-$9.99
<> Great White was featured in the lead item of the very first issue of this
newsletter by virtue of that band's unfortunate - to say the least - involvement
in the devastating fire at the Rhode Island nightclub, The Station. It is more
than a little surprising to see that some semblance of Great White is still
around and releasing records.
HAMMOND, JOHN-Rough & Tough-$13.88
HAY, COLIN-Transcendental Highway-$10.88
IRON AND WINE-Norfolk 6/20/05-$9.99
ISSA (JANE SIBERRY)-Dragon Dreams-$9.99
JANE'S ADDICTION-Cabinet Of Curiosities-$54.99
<> Jane's Addiction has been around long enough and has been successful enough
to have become a band of reference. No strangers to the modern world of rock 'n'
roll gaming, Jane's Addiction has its track, "The Mountain Song," on both Rock
Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour. The Jane's Addiction album, "Nothing's
Shocking," will be Rock Band downloadable content (DLC) on Tuesday.
JEWELL, EILEN-Sea Of Tears-$9.99
<> "Sea of Tears" follows up "Letters From Sinners and Strangers," an album that
showed much promise for the Eilen Jewell Band. It is great to see the latest
Eilen Jewell record among releases by national and international acts.
KING CRIMSON-40th Anniversary Tour Box-$16.99
LACUNA COIL-Shallow Life-$11.88
<> Admired vocals by Christina Scabbia are among the factors that have kept this
group prominently before rock gaming citizens of our land. A gamer of the Lewis
clan calls this outfit "awesome." I'd be game for taking a listen.
LANDRETH, SONNY-Levee Town (2 CD)-$11.88
MR. LIF-I Heard It Today-$9.99
<> It is great to see Boston's Mr Lif in such celebrated company.
OASIS-Stop The Clocks (2 CD)-$9.99
O'CONNOR, SINEAD-I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got (Special Edition)-$13.88
PET SHOP BOYS-Yes-$9.99
PET SHOP BOYS-Yes (Limited Edition/2 CD)-$15.99
QUEEN-Queen's First Ep-$7.99
<> We were advised by a hardcore Queen fan that this reissue is probably mostly
for hardcore Queen fans. There is probably no shortage of those, which is a
reason we include this entry here. According to this fan's account, "Queen's
First EP" has a number of points of interest.
SEVENTH VOID (TYPE O-NEGATIVE)-Heaven Is Gone-$9.99
<> Seventh Void features the guitarist and drummer of Type O Negative, an
important selling point. For me, the band name, "Type O Negative," always calls
to mind a fanciful notion that this outfit is some kind of negative image of the
1990s Boston band, O Positive.
TOUSSAINT, ALLEN-Bright Mississippi-$11.88
TURTLES-Save The Turtles: Greatest Hits-$7.99
WHITE, RON-Behavioral Problems-$9.99
<> Apparently Ron White has expanded from his gig on the Blue Collar Comedy
Tour, and we are told that at times he is very funny. Jeff Foxworthy as an
artist of reference is likely not totally off the mark.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK
<> Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem at the Valley Players Theatre in Waitsfield,
Vermont, Friday, May 15, 2009. Fantastic spot for a great night of music and
mayhem.
<> Mimi Fishman Foundation Rocks the Earth. We have posted press releases from
the Mimi Fishman Foundation, so many of you may already be familiar with this
charitable organization.
<> Session Americana To Release "Diving for Gold" May 12, 2009.
<> Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Week Two. This is not a lot like a press release,
but around the press release section of this newsletter is still probably where
it most belongs.
<> Harmonix's Announcement of Lego RockBand. This announcement is quite long,
and much of it may be of little interest to many readers. Who knows. But it
seems to me that the very idea of Lego Rockband is mindscrambling. What next?
Erector Set Guitar Hero? This announcement, though, includes a capsule item
about Harmonix Music Systems. Anyone who more than glances at pieces about rock
'n' roll gaming - Guitar Hero and Rockband - might do well to give this short
Harmonix item a quick look.

DENNIS BRENNAN
Opening for Geils
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
House of Blues
Boston Massachusetts
<> A recent Dennis Brennan Band mailing included a particularly interesting
events calendar entry. I am personally not sure either way whether J. Geils
refers to the rock band by that name or Jaye Geils, the J. Geils Band's lead
guitarist. Either way, the Dennis Brennan Band alone would make for a fantastic
show, and any Geils presence is so much the better.

PETER DAYTON
Well, Alright
<> Did I ever get a huge surprise early this week when I searched our computer
records and found that this newsletter has never once so much as mentioned
ex-Boston rocker Peter Dayton.
Whoa!
Peter Dayton fronted an important 1970s Boston punk rock band, La Peste. When
introducing songs with La Peste, he managed a degree of franticness never before
achieved in rock 'n' roll. It was great.
La Peste
"La Peste" (CD, Matador Records OLE 189-2, 1996)
After La Peste, Dayton had his own pop-rock band which put out a nifty vinyl EP
with one particularly dynamite cut, "Love At First Sight."
: : : It was love at first sight
: : : Well alright
In 2005 Dayton sneaked this material out on CD. At least we never received
anything on it. And I first learned of the Peter Dayton CD just days ago.
Your tax dollars at work.
The Library of Congress has a copy.
It is
Peter Dayton
"Peter Dayton" (CD, Smash Easy SE20043, 2005)
Smash Easy seems like the right label to release the post-La Peste Peter Dayton.
I, personally, have not heard this record, having discovered it for myself just
days ago. But I am very glad to learn that it is out there.

NEMS Gems of the Decade
Decade 0x
(Pronounced "Oh Ex" or "Zero Ex," not "Ox")
We are listing a lot of New England CDs in some detail for our future use, here
and elsewhere. Of those we have listed so far, these are among the best. These
records found their audiences to varying degrees, but it seems to me that some
of them at least are overlooked treasures. "Honkin' on Bobo" may be the most
unusual example. As I recall, it sold two million copies quickly. This would
be the equivalent of winning a lottery jackpot for most artists, but it was a
great disappointment by Aerosmith's lofty standards. "Honkin' on Bobo" is a far
better record than often presented. It is among Aerosmith's best.

COACHMEN
1960s Connecticut Band
<> If you know about a 1960s Connecticut band called The Coachmen and you are
willing to share your information, please e-mail us by way of
FredRemainsLost At Yahoo Dot Com
only convert this into an all-lowercase conventional e-mail address.
These particular Coachmen flourished from the early 60s to about 1967 or 1968
and played contemporary covers (not sure, one way or the other, about original
material) through the areas of Fairfield County Connecticut and Westchester/
White Plains, New York.
In another account, we have names of band members.
We would greatly appreciate whatever information you could send our way.

THE REMAINS
At the Nashville Film Festival
<> The Remains - Barry and the Remains - played the Nashville Film Festival on
Thursday, at least that was the schedule.
The Remains documentary, "America's Lost Band," was set for showings on
Wednesday and Thursday. The members of The Remains were to have been present
for a question and answer session.
We received notice of these events unfortunately after we posted our last
newsletter issue.

GOOGLE AND GMAIL
<> We received no responses to my query about what to do regarding our
misbehaving GMail e-mail account.
Since posting that information request, it has become my impression that Google
may be having more nearly system-wide technical problems. Starting about 3 or
3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I experienced on-again, off-again
serious trouble accessing www.google.com. I use Google.com for my home page
because of its high level of dependability and also because Google.com doesn't
do anything annoying. So having major problems accessing Google.com for about
four hours running, three consecutive days is a surprise to say the least. I'm
not sure about the same super-early time period today, Saturday, because I was
knocked offline by two close-together thunderstorms (which were not in our local
weather forecast).

JOSH RITTER
The Great Out of Doors as a Venue
<> Time has run out and if I am to post the latest item about Josh Ritter it
will have to be in a later newsletter issue. But I will make quick note here
that this one-time New Englander has a show coming up at Central Park in New
York City. Decent.

8:30 doors/9:30 show/21+
Cambridge MA - Diving for Gold marks a series of changes for Session Americana.
The most notable transition is from founding bass player, Kimon Kirk, to Jon
Bistline, whose original song "I Can't Get Out" is the first track on the new
album. Both Kirk and Bistline perform on the record, however Kimon has since
moved to the West Coast where he continues to play music. The focus of the album
is towards original material - a departure for a band that has focused on songs
from its immediate community of friends and public domain material. Paul Q.
Kolderie and Co. (Pixies, Radiohead, Hole, Dinosaur Jr., Throwing Muses,
Morphine, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones) brought a touch of old-fashioned
producing as well as a thick soup of sonic fidelity to the sessions, whereas the
band's previous recordings relied on a communal spontaneity for their
inspiration.
Finally, while not directly affecting the recording, the band has been
invigorated by a long series of Tuesday nights performing sold-out shows at the
Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. With developed material, and a now `broken in'
Bistline on bass, Session Americana has won over a whole new audience with their
intimate but highly entertaining performing style.
About:
Session Americana sit tightly around a small round cafe table, ambient mics
tuned to catch the complete sound of the voices and instruments. A suitcase drum
kit, an old electric bass, a field organ and a collection of acoustic
instruments. The unique format feels fantastically theatrical and although the
musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the
warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all-star cast of
characters seated around the table. What keeps fans coming back show after show
is the same thing that any audience member longs for; great songs performed by a
great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth
of experience to the "table", featuring (current and former) members of Treat
Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst
to name just a few. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a
regional institution, playing
gigs from coffee houses to urban nightclubs, regional festival tents to theaters
and in front of audiences in New York City and beyond.
How does Session Americana manage to sell out shows, week after week, year after
year?
"Session Americana is loose the way you want a band to be and tight the way you
want a band to be. I can't describe them well but I can tell you that you really
want to see them play. If this is geographically impossible for you, you should
probably move here, or at the very least acquire their great double album Table
Top People. " - Kris Delmhorst
"Truly original. I can honestly say there isn't anything else like Session
Americana, anywhere. Seeing S.A. is like watching roots style musical theater:
from the group-wide exchanging of instruments, dramatic variations in song style
and structure, to the layering of multi-part vocal harmonies and harmonica; this
is a performance! And every performance I have ever been privy to witness has
been masterful and exciting from start to finish.
Their live show is inviting, captivating and....magical! S. A. is proficient and
polished, yet rootsy and raw. It's a winning combination that I've rarely ever
seen and have never seen done so well." -Ward Hayden, Girls, Guns and Glory
"Session Americana is that club of warm, talented, hip, and gracious folks that
you instantly want to join. They're the group that you watch and think, "Damn, I
wish I was in that band." The love of and passion for the music is obvious. It
is in their bones. They draw everyone in. Every set is that magical night at the
campfire that you experienced when you were a kid and never forgot; it stayed
with you and made you want to play music, to share conversation and drinks and
you wished it would never end. It was one of those fleeting moments of Zen
clarity in life when you realize: this is what it's all about. Going to a
Session American night is a night of communion. Everyone there wants to share
the warmth from their campfire. Everyone their wants to join that club. And,
with apologies to Groucho Marx, once I was asked to join their club, however
briefly, at that inspirational table, I never wanted to leave." - Bill Janovitz,
Buffalo Tom
"Genius ... Jaw-dropping vocals ... Session Americana is blessed in this regard:
...musicianship that sets the standard for the genre in Boston and vocals that
do the same" — NE Performer Magazine

GUITAR HERO
Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Week Two
<> IGN leaked these yesterday, the Guitar Hero site confirmed them today.
One of the things that kind of bothers me here is that we already have a few
songs redundant with Rock Band. While it's probably ridiculous to let someone
else's track list determine your own, when you're talking a limited number of
songs, repeating tracks already covered in a similar format (in this case, with
guitar, bass, drums and vocals), it seems like it would take away from the
allure of your game.
Of course, I personally like this selection. Aside from three tracks I don't
remember off-hand, everything is golden. Conspicuously missing is Hangar 18 by
Megadeath.

of the main ways we pick up readers.
.
<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though
our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably an easy majority of our
readers are based outside the six New England states. The great majority of
show listings would be of no interest at all to the great majority of our
readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the main point of an
item of this sort is that an act has a new record. The show being announced is
of secondary interest to us - if that - as far as the contents of our newsletter
goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show listings...
.
... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another date or location.
We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or otherwise confirming details.
