BRATTLEBORO, VT, May 9 - Thunder and lightning is likely this afternoon,
according to our weather forecast. It is already past noon. Full speed
ahead...
Remaining news e-mails contain many items that are not at all time-sensitive.
Not yet, anyway. I'll be holding these for next issue or later, whichever comes
first.
It is my determined goal to beat out any and all lightning storms that may be
coming our way.

YAHOO NEWS HEADLINE
Friday Morning
: : : Former Red Sox great Dom DiMaggio dies
: : : at 92 (AP)
We lost a good one, with the death of Dom DiMaggio. In the decades following
his retirement from major league baseball, at times he had his differences with
Red Sox ownership and management, though the details are lost somewhere in my
memory. But through his long association with the sport, the New England
region, and the Boston Red Sox, I don't recall ever hearing anyone say anything
other than the most kind words about him.
Dom DiMaggio was always one of my favorite baseball people. As a player, he
could charge a baseball best by playing center field standing sideways. To me,
he looked pretty neat in such an unusual stance.
Dom DiMaggio was fondly nicknamed the "Little Professor," which had to do with
him wearing glasses while playing the game. But it seems to me he was kind of
professorial anyway.
Either way, one of the Red Sox all-time greats is gone, and we miss him.
RIP, Dominique DiMaggio.

RECORDS BY NEW ENGLAND-CONNECTED ARTISTS
<> My own listing project keeps turning up recordings of varying vintage that
are at least new to me. For instance, I have stumbled upon a couple Boston
compilation CDs which, as far as I can tell, have not circulated at all widely.
More on them later. The library of Brown University in Providence RI has an
instructional VHS videocassette by Jay Geils, of the J. Geils Band and of so
much more. In the late 1980s, Jen Trynin released a vinyl record. I don't
recall ever hearing of her before 1994's "Cockamamie." No doubt there are other
new-to-me treasures that just aren't coming to mind at present.
See the Brief Items section, below, for another notable example.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK
Actually, we will have to run Press Releases This Week mostly some other week.
Even without the threat of lightning, I'd still be about out of time at this
point. But down where press releases normally go, we do have
<> IGN's full list of titles for Guitar Hero: Smash Hits. The selections may be
of interest even to many non-gamers.
One item I hope to work in next time has to do with guitars planned for Guitar
Hero: The Beatles. These are George and John instruments. Apparently nothing
has been announced yet about the way Paul's famous electric bass will be
represented. Actually, I would have included this piece this time, but I
accidentally overlooked it.

EARTHFEST
Radio 92.9 EarthFest
Boston
<> Our copy of the EarthFest news e-mail says the full press release is
attached, but there is actually nothing attached to the message (though the
e-mail does show a spot where an attachment should be). 'Tis true, this is
another episode of Lost in Cyberspace. On the other hand, the following concise
description of EarthFest is quite good:
"The event takes place at the Hatch Shell in Boston on May 30, 2009 and will
feature Soul Asylum, The Lemonheads, Seven Mary Three and Shawn Mullins."
Also included is the Web address of the festival's home page, which is
http://www.earthfest.com/
No doubt a great deal more information is available at the EarthFest website.
Lemonhead-in-Chief Evan Dando has certainly kept things interesting over the
years, along with a few ups and downs and twists and turns; and his band's
booking into 2009's EarthFest is likely to be a good draw. - Ed.

PATTY LARKIN
And Her Short Story
(She Didn't Give the Story's Title)
<> "Speaking of stimulus packages, I want to tell you about a very cool book of
short stories that just came out called 'Amplified' (Mellville House
Publishing). It's a collection of writings from some of your (and my) favorite
songwriters. Folks like Mary Gauthier, Chris Smither, David Olney, Robbie
Fulks, Maria McKee, to name a few. I wrote my first short story ever and it's
in there as well. On tour in May I'll have the books available at shows. I'll
be offering 'Amplified' and my latest CD, 'Watch The Sky,' at a very stimulating
price. Come on down! Personally, I'm looking forward to reading what everyone
came up with on the plane ride out. I know there are some treasures awaiting."
SOURCE: Patty Larkin Announcements, "May Greetings from Patty Larkin," May 1,
2009.
AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, . . this is the book Patty Larkin spoke of:
Julie Schaper and Steven Horwitz. "Amplified." S.l.: Melville Publishing House.
2009.
It is certainly my guess that Schaper and Horwitz are the editors.
In other PL news . . . Though we seldom have firm sales figures, it looks to me
as though "Watch the Sky," Patty Larkin's latest disc, may be her biggest seller
so far.
Patty Larkin
"Watch the Sky"
(CD, Vanguard Records 79851-2, 2008)
"Watch the Sky" is Patty Larkin's best album.

.
BILL CHINNOCK
"Badlands"
<> My project of listing record releases by New England-connected artists has
turned up a good number of surprises, a few of which are noted above. Probably
the greatest of these surprises is the apparent 2008 CD re-release of
"Badlands," the best-known album by Maine's Bill Chinnock.
Bill Chinnock
"Badlands"
(CD, Collector's Choice Music CCM 948, 2008;
original LPs: North Country, 1977;
Atlantic, 1978)
To the extent that this reissue is being promoted, someone involved in the
promotion has made a terrific mistake in not informing us. A very great number
of our readers are dyed-in-the-wool Bill Chinnock fans. But this is an
oversight we can still overcome, starting with this posting.
.
ROSIE HUNTRESS
A Query
<> Are you up-to-date on the music and career of Boston rock vocalist Rosie
Huntress?
A few years back, we received this record:
Rosie Huntress
"Kissing and Telling"
(CD, Curve of the Earth Records
COTE 752, [2004])
I really liked this EP and quickly got on the Rosie Huntress Band mailing list.
A couple news e-mails came, but we have heard nothing since. Was our address
inadvertently dropped? Don't know. But if you have an update that you would be
willing to share, we would love to hear from you. Please e-mail us by way of

STACEY EARLE AND MARK STUART
To Everything There Is a Season
<> The long-running duo on the coffeehouse and festival circuit, Stacey Earle
and Mark Stuart, will cease to exist in 2010. Their marriage continues and, we
hope, continues to flourish. And each will present a solo act. These two have
been among the most dedicated road warriors for many years; but evidently in the
business of managing a neverending tour, Bob Dylan is about to edge them out.
(Call it a hunch, but here's betting Dylan travels in greater creature comfort.)
Mark and Stacey have done well, and they must be proud of all the pleasure they
have given people all along the circuit.

all new recordings of his hottest and most-requested guitar pieces, plus the
music written out in both standard notation and tablature. Stay tuned for more!"

"LITTLE LION" IS A SIMPLY WONDERFUL . . Brooks Williams instrumental album. We

And speaking of Brooks...
JOSH BROOKS
"Lesson Learned" Album
<> More on this later . . . but Vermont singer-songwriter Josh Brooks, who is
also one half of the Josh Brooks Band, has scheduled his CD-release for early
June. Veteran readers of this newsletter may recognize the memorable title of
one of the disc's songs, "This Bar Is Full of Broken Hearts."

up-and-coming section of this music oriented 'hood, the studio will cater to
Pete's production clients, especially songwriters and solo artists in a

RHYTHM GAME MARKET
Flooded
<> We received a rather detailed analysis of the flooding of the rhythm game
market. Possibly we can run it here later. These rock music oriented computer

that have already been announced plus other games that are rumored, the industry
may be pushing its luck.

IT IS WORTH NOTING . . that in the noon news broadcast the same day, CNN radio

SWINE FLU TRANSMISSION
<> Last issue I included a news headline about worries that humans might pass
swine flu on to pigs. The absurdity of this notion really got my attention. In
the following overnight, CBS radio news said a Canadian farmer reported that
visitors to his farm had infected his workers and his pigs with swine flu. The
farmer could be right, I suppose. I'll be darned!

.
<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though
our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably an easy majority of our
readers are based outside the six New England states. The great majority of
show listings would be of no interest at all to the great majority of our
readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the main point of an
item of this sort is that an act has a new record. The show being announced is
of secondary interest to us - if that - as far as the contents of our newsletter
goes.
