BRATTLEBORO, VT, May 16 - One did not have to scroll down far at all, on the
first page of Yahoo Music News, to start seeing headlines that were posted way
back a week ago. This must have been a slow week on the highest levels of the
music business. It was not at all slow, though, around here. This newsletter
issue is of decent size, and we have more items we are holding over in hopes of
running later.

My listing project is moving right along. I am making something like catalog
entries for various record releases by New England-connected artists, with an
intended emphasis, for starters, on this decade and the 1990s. The present
year, 2009, is well represented.

Here is a record, which came up, that I had totally forgotten about:

Various Artists
"Everybody Wants Some! A Loose Interpretation
of the Musical Genius of Van Halen"
(CD, CherryDisc Records CH 5794-2, 1997)

I have never actually heard "Everybody Wants Some!" but I know a number of
people who really like it. It sounds like a lot of fun.

An earlier album coming up for cataloguing is one by a highly talented 1970s
band, Lilith.

RECORD RELEASES THIS WEEK
Listed by Newbury Comics, Excerpted by Us

It is just a guess, but it definitely WOULD be my guess, that the "Townes" album
by Steve Earle would be one of this week's standouts, assuming, as I do, that
this is an album of interpretations of songs of Townes Van Zandt or that it is
otherwise a tribute to him and his music.

I wonder what all the Zakk Wylde activity is all about.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK

<> Kitty Angels benefit at TT the Bear's Place, Wednesday, May 27, 2009.

<> EarthFest: Boston, Saturday, May 30, 2009. This looks to be a terrific show
overall; and with the involvement of The Lemonheads, this concert should turn
out to be fine and Dando.

<> Brendan Carey Block to represent New Hampshire, performing traditional fiddle
music, at the Homegrown Concert Series of the Library of Congress' American
Folklife Center. This is more like a limited-circulation circular than a press
release; but it is of a length common to press releases, and that section of our
newsletter seems like a good spot to post it. Brendan's dad was a member of
easily one of my favorite 1970s bands, Jacob's Reunion.

<> Rock Band and Guitar Hero news, including an interesting, quick reference to
"The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers.

<> Cooper Boone, a Northeast-based country music performer who is new to us, has
a press release that country fans in particular might want to check out. It is
posted below. Some readers may know that Bill Haley of Bill Haley and His
Comets, during his earlier days as a hillbilly singer in the 1940s after World
War II, was a disk jockey in Philadelphia and nearby parts of New Jersey. Those
sections of Pennsylvania and New Jersey have a notable country music tradition
going back that far and well beyond. Was yodeler Rosalie Allen from
Pennsylvania? I'm quite certain she performed there a lot.

LOVE DOGS
Find New Diggings Once Again

Doin' the Debut Thing Tonight
Saturday, May 16, 2009
at Mal's Blues and Jazz Lounge at George's
Haverhill, Massachusetts

<> Boston's Love Dogs seem to have a real talent for sniffing out new venues:
not the easiest task that could be set before them in tough economic times.
Here is what the 'Dogs sent about a Haverhill, Massachusetts debut tonight:

Sat May 16
Mal's Blues & Jazz Lounge at George's - Haverhill, MA
978 374-5150

http://www.georgesonwashington.com/mals.html

Our first time at this VERY cool and classy new venue north of Boston. Since
their opening at the beginning of '09, Mal's has been featuring the best in
regional and national blues including Roomful of Blues, Duke Robillard, Coco
Montoya and many others. A beautiful room with great sightlines and excellent
sound. Come early for dinner at the award winning restaurant! Reservations
suggested.

PRIVATE LIGHTNING
Joining the Compact Disc Era

<> Private Lightning bassist Steve Keith has a nifty Web address. He also has
news regarding CD availability of his old band's music.

" . . . Renaissance Records has acquired the rights to Private Lightning
material, and will be releasing a CD in mid-June. The CD will include all of
the original album cuts, plus US Love which was also recorded at Montserrat. In
addition, there will be many never-released cuts on the CD. They have been
granted access to the original tapes, and have done some remastering, so I am
hoping that things will be nice and crisp on this release.

"I've seen it listed on Amazon and at Best Buy as a pre-release order item.
Also, it can be ordered via the Renaissance site,

http://www.renaissancerecordsus.com/

in the near future. I've been told that the information will be posted at
Renaissance in about three days from now.

"Also, I have received a bunch of the old newsletters that PL used to put out
and have started posting them at

http://www.baselines.com/

SOURCE: Steve Keith, "Private Lightning Release on CD," May 12, 2009.

WE ARE AWARE OF A NUMBER OF ACTS . . whose fans are just not willing to let go.
Private Lightning is a case in point. Inquiries sent to us about Private
Lightning's music have come here quite steadily. Private Lightning created some
real beauty. - Ed.

FACE TO FACE
1980s/Early 1990s Rock Band

<> Here are more record releases that, as far as I recall, we did not learn
about at the time:

Face to Face
"Face to Face"
(CD, Wounded Bird Records WOU 3885, 2006;
original LP Epic, 1984)

Face to Face
"Confrontation"
(CD, Wounded Bird Records WOU 3999, 2006;
original LP Epic, 1985)

I only have these albums as vinyl LPs and I have nothing to play them on. The
following recording was released on CD, and this one I do have and can play.

Face to Face
"One Big Day"
(CD, Mercury 834 376-2, 1988)
.

LAURIE SARGENT
A Query

<> Did Laurie Sargent, formerly of Face to Face, have an indie album titled
"Something With the Moon"? Was this strictly an album cut?

If there was an album by this title, do you have a copy?

If you do have a copy of "Something With the Moon" by Laurie Sargent and you
would be willing to send us some data from the disc and jewelbox/jacket, please
e-mail us by way of

WATERSHED TAVERN
of Brandon, Vermont
Has Closed

<> A May 13, 2009 announcement e-mail from Vermont singer-songwriter Josh Brooks
brought sad news that the Watershed Tavern - one of Brooks' "absolute favorite
places to play" - has closed. Sorry to hear it.

GEORGE LEH
Still Rockin' After All of These Years

Brian, of southern New Hampshire renown, sent the following Web address for
George Leh:

http://rockingeorge.com/

Many of our readers would know Leh as a veteran bluesman and blues-rocker with
such ensembles as Swallow and George Leh and the Rockin' Shoes.

When I was a kid, my parents had a single by a vocal group of Boston origin, The
Ames Brothers. One of these same Ames Brothers went on to portray a featured
character in the television series, "Daniel Boone."

This single may folks had featured "Tammy," and "Rockin' Shoes" was the flip
side. George Leh, in addition to his own excellent music, for me always calls
to mind that fun little light rocker from my early days.
.

BITS AND PIECES

<> John Coster, who would make my short list of all-time favorite songwriters
any day, has a "John Coster and Special Guests" concert coming up on Saturday
May 23, 2009, at Bistro 186 in Northampton, Massachusetts. If possible, next
issue will include his show announcement.

<> Hungrytown - leading exemplars of the famished folk genre - have not one but
three recording projects in the works. The word, "prolific," is not the first
that comes to mind to describe Hungrytown as recording artists, so this may be a
major new development. The recent eponymous Hungrytown album is excellent, and
the prior release, which is something like a pre-debut in a way, includes a
stellar version of the traditional "Rosemary Lane." Clearly the Hungrytown
people can get the job done in the recording studio. Possibly we can run more on
this later.

<> The Eilen Jewell Band's latest release is in the Americana chart's Top 10,
according to no less an authority than Eilen Jewell.

<> Rock Band: The Beatles guitars:

http://kotaku.com/5240592/the-beatles-rock-band-gets-the-beatles-guitars

Who needs a Strat when you have these?

These are just the George and John models. The bundle comes with a replica of
McCartney's famous violin bass. Whether the bass comes separately had not been
announced by the time we received this information in a May 5th Stephen Lewis
e-mail. Going entirely on memory, I think an announcement since then has said
the bass would be separate. I could be wrong.

<> Aerosmith, whose mailing list supposedly we are on, according to the Dropkick
Murphys, whose mailing we obviously are on, has announced that these two great
Boston bands - Aerosmith and the Dropkick Murphys - have a joint billing at the
Mansfield, Massachusetts Comcast Center, June 16, 2009.

<> The Swedish-American band, Miike Snow, has a New York-based member, and it
also has a debut record release, along with the group's first-ever United States
concert-tour stops. Eleanor Morrill, the wife of my first cousin Reid Morrill,
for many years was quite active in pulling together the Swedish heritage
festival in New Sweden, Maine. I, myself, have researched the Swedish movement
cure, an old medical specialty, for about a dozen years. Connections between
Sweden and the United States are many and long-standing.

<> Boston Babydolls Quincy ordeal: The Boston Babydolls' latest mailing was
headed, "The Public Meeting Was One Step Shy of a Lynching..." accompanied by a
link to evidently supporting evidence in the Quincy Patriot-Ledger. This Boston
Babydolls mailing went on to say, "We're feeling pretty battered and bruised and
we'd love your support." I have not been able to follow this story, but it
sounds as though the 'Dolls have been having a rough time of it. The Boston
Babydolls seem to be nice people, and members are quite enthusiastic about what
they do. It is our fond hope that their present situation takes a happier turn.

EARTHFEST: BOSTON
Saturday, May 30, 2009
Press Release

EarthFest Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Soul Asylum, The Lemonheads, Seven Mary Three and Shawn Mullins to Play 16th
Annual Radio 92.9 EarthFest on May 30, 2009

Free Festival will Feature Great Music, Family-Friendly Activities and
Environmental Initiatives

Boston, MA, (April 22, 2009): Radio 92.9 has announced the 16th Annual EarthFest
will be held on May 30th, 2009 from Noon to 5:00 pm at the Massachusetts
Department of Conservation and Recreation's Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston. The
free festival will feature performances from Soul Asylum, The Lemonheads, Seven
Mary Three and Shawn Mullins.

Presented by Whole Foods Market and free to the public, EarthFest will once
again be a celebration for the Earth showcasing environmentally friendly
products, groups, and activities. EarthFest will also feature an all-star
musical line-up, an interactive family area and more. Produced in conjunction
with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the event is
expected to draw more than 100,000.

"We are thrilled to help raise awareness of the environmental issues we all face
and offer ways each individual can help," said Ken West, program director at
Radio 92.9. "It's a great feeling that in these tough economic times, Radio 929
can once again provide a day of free entertainment to all- a can't miss event
for music fans in New England."

The 2009 Radio 92.9 EarthFest is committed to offering festival goers an
opportunity to learn how they can make a difference and help save Planet Earth.
The festival will feature exhibits and environmental displays, staffed by
sponsors and non-profit environmental organizations from New England. Each
exhibitor is committed to raising awareness and offering educational information
about different environmental issues facing the planet.

Radio 92.9 is also working hard to ensure the event is carbon-neutral, creating
little impact on the environment. A comprehensive recycling program will be put
in place throughout the duration of the show and Mass Bike will be onsite
staffing a free bike-valet program, offering concertgoers an alternative to
driving to the festival.

In addition to the musical performances on the main stage, the 2009 Radio 92.9
Earthfest will also feature Kids' Planet – an expanded interactive family area.
The perfect destination for families and kids of all ages, Kids' Planet will
feature a stage with a wide variety of musical acts and entertainment as well as
environmental activities and educational displays. Activities in Kids' Planet
will begin at 10 a.m.

Musical performances on the main stage will begin at 12:00 noon. This year's
performers include:

Soul Asylum, an American alternative rock band formed in Minneapolis in 1983.
The group was an outgrowth of a previous band, Loud Fast Rules, formed in 1981.
After being picked up by Columbia Records they released the double-platinum
album Grave Dancers Union in 1992 featuring their Grammy Award-winning single
"Runaway Train". They also scored a platinum record with the album Let Your Dim
Light Shine in 1998. In 2006, Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy
returned to rock's front line with THE SILVER LINING, their first new studio
release since Candy From a Stranger.

The son of a Boston attorney and a fashion model, Evan Dando (vocals, guitar,
drums) formed the Lemonheads with his high-school classmates in the early 90's.
After developing his signature blend of pop, punk, and country-rock on several
independent records in the late '80s, Evan Dando moved the Lemonheads to
Atlantic Records in 1990. Two years later, It's a Shame About Ray made the group
into media sensations. The Lemonheads recently signed to Brooklyn, NY-based THE
END RECORDS and will be releasing their long-awaited covers collection, VARSHONS
in June 2009.

Within the alternative world, Seven Mary Three has often been compared to the
mainstream-sounding, garage/arena rock of post-Ten Pearl Jam, but the group
insists that their refusal to alienate themselves from the rest of the world
makes them different; instead, Seven Mary Three offers songs concerning
self-discovery and true outsiders isolated from society. Based in Virginia, the
group was signed to the Mammoth label after its first single, Cumbersome, was
played on a Florida radio station and generated a huge response. Their debut
album, American Standard, was released in 1995; Rock Crown followed in 1997, and
a year later Seven Mary Three returned with their third LP, Orange Ave. In
December 2008, they reissued Churn, the much-talked-about and long-out-of-print
debut CD from 1994.

Atlanta-based folksinger and songwriter Shawn Mullins was serving as a member of
the U.S. Army Airborne Infantry Division when he released his first self-titled
cassette on his own SM label in 1989. Following the release of 1991's
Everchanging World, he left the military after eight years to pursue music on a
full-time basis. After 1995's Jeff's Last Dance, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, live
companion discs recorded jointly with Matthew Kahler, Mullins returned a year
later with the solo Eggshells. Soul's Core, his first album for major label
Columbia, followed in 1998, scoring a Top Ten hit with the single "Lullaby." The
album eventually went platinum; paving the way for an anthology of his early
work with 1999's The First Ten Years. The Essential Shawn Mullins collection
arrived in 2003, followed by 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor for Vanguard Records in
2006 and Honeydew in March of 2009.

Radio 929 recommends festival goers ride their bikes or take the MBTA to the
Hatch Shell. Take the Green Line to Arlington Street or take the Red Line to
Charles Street / MGH. For more details, visit the MBTA website at www.mbta.com

BRENDAN CAREY BLOCK
At the Homegrown Concert Series
of the American Folklife Center

We have been aware of Brendan Carey Block, as a gifted Cape Breton-style
traditional fiddler, since a young age. HE was at a young age. Not us. He has
lately received evidently unanticipated recognition for his musical
accomplishments from a high source.

Brendan's father is Richard Block. He played an essential bass line on one of
my all-time favorite album cuts of any sort, "Solid Night" by Block's 1970s
band, Jacob's Reunion. Here is the news he has passed along:

<> My son, Brendan Carey Block, has been invited by the American Folklife Center
at the Library of Congress to perform traditional fiddle music of New Hampshire
and Cape Breton Island at their Homegrown Concert Series. This series is put on
about eight times per year, and one traditional performer is chosen from each
state, meaning it will take about eight years to cycle through the entire
country. We're still not sure how Brendan was selected, and looking at the
archives of previous concerts (they've been running for about five years so far)
I think he may be the youngest performer they have ever invited.

The concert at the Library of Congress will be on Thursday, May 28th from noon
to 1:00 followed by an evening performance that night at the Kennedy Center
Millennium Stage at 6 pm. All performances are free and open to the public.
Brendan's backup will be Flynn Cohen (of Brendan's band Annalivia) on guitar and
me on bass. The Library of Congress concert will be recorded on audio and
video, archived in the American Folklife Center's permanent collection, and made
available for viewing on their website at some point about a month or so from
now. The Kennedy Center concert will be live web broadcast that night and
available for later viewing from their archives at any time.

The Traditional Arts Coordinator for the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts
has submitted an essay about Brendan for the literature about the concert and
she will also travel to Washington to introduce him at the concerts. In
addition, she is planning to take Brendan with her the day before to visit our
congressional offices and lobby for continued support for the arts.

We are still a little stunned -- it's not often that good things come out of the
blue like this, but it is sure nice when it does happen.

ROCK BAND AND GUITAR HERO NEWS
Including an Interesting Reference to
"The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers

When one considers that country music has produced plentiful story songs,
including some fantastic ones, steadily for many decades, it is amazing how a
handful of them have lived many lives: as hit records, feature films, MTV videos

television shows, and probably just about every other form of entertainment.
"The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers is a case in point.

CROONER COOPER BOONE IS COUNTRY MUSIC'S JACK OF ALL TRADES

NYC JOE'S PUB PERFORMANCE SET FOR MAY 26th

New York, NY-- Cooper Boone is a person for whom the term "triple threat" is a
few threats short. Named "Best Country Artist" of 2008 at the Hollywood Music
Awards, Boone co-wrote most of the songs on his self-titled debut album out
August 4 on Green Rooster Records... Boone also co-owns a country store in
upstate New York, raises chickens on a farm in northeast Pennsylvania and hosts
"Cowboy Kitchen," an online music-themed cooking show based on his own recipes.
"Boredom's a killer for me, man!" he says, chuckling. "It doesn't exist in my
house."

Watch "Cowboy Kitchen" episodes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M47lWWUmOi8

Produced by songwriter/producer/guitarist Mark D. Conklin, Boone's debut album
features co-writes with heavy-hitting songwriters Kirsti Manna (wrote Black
Shelton's #1 hit "Austin"), James Dean Hicks (Kenny Chesney, Jessica Simpson)
and Bonnie Baker (Reba, Billy Ray Cyrus). He also has a cut from Josh Kear
(wrote Carrie Underwood's #1 hit "Before He Cheats"). Listen to music:
http://www.myspace.com/cooperboonemusic

On the album, upbeat crowd-pleasers like "She's All That" sit comfortably
alongside personal, heartfelt fare like "Celia's Hands;" a heroine of Boone's,
"that song is like one big happy memory for me."

Throughout the album, Boone mines his life for inspiration, with tracks like
"Sizzle" where he recalls a crush-worthy choir director from his childhood and
"Mending Fences," a song about making amends for past mistakes. Even "Cougar
Dream," an irresistible hook-fest delivered with more than a pinch of humor, has
roots in Boone's life. "That song comes from hearing how a lot of older women
talk about feeling invisible in a youth centered world," Boone explains. "I
wanted to write an upbeat song that honors ladies out there who might not be 22
but are still out there living life and looking great!"

Boone has previously shared the stage with Craig Morgan, Trace Adkins, Jazmine
Sullivan and The Bacon Brothers, and will tour nationally this summer.

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though
our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably an easy majority of our
