BRATTLEBORO, VT, May 23 - We had a marked slowdown this week in the number of
news e-mails received. It is, of course, no big surprise, this being a major
holiday weekend. We will try to make the most of what we did get.
However (last-minute note), our local weather forecasters seem to have differing
professional views as to whether and even when we are to have lightning storms
this afternoon. A casual look at the sky just now is equally ambiguous. It
could go either way. To improve my chances of getting this newsletter mailed
today, I am going to hurry with it now and pick up the pieces later.

Compiled lovingly but in weather-forecast-induced great haste.

CUTTING EDGE OF THE CAMPFIRE
This Very Weekend
<> We received an announcement by Goli, by golly, of that duo's appearance this
weekend at Club Passim's Cutting Edge of the Campfire Festival.
For some reason though, when we searched the Web on Cutting Edge of the
Campfire, using both Google and Yahoo, my hitlists did not include anything at
all that I would recognize as a direct link to a festival events schedule.
Cutting Edge of the Campfire is a regular, highly worthwhile production; and if
we had had more time, we would have gladly tracked down details. I personally
really love looking through the schedule for the latest round of surprise
bookings, of which there are always several (a punk rock night being a major
past example). As it is, though, all we can do is pass along that Club Passim's
Cutting Edge of the Campfire is going on right now, and it is very much worth
looking into further.
This is an important entry on each year's arts and entertainment calendar.

POLKA PARTY TONIGHT!
Polish-American Club
East Cambridge, Massachusetts
Saturday, May 23, 2009
8 P.M. to Midnight
The polka, I happen to know, is thought to have been introduced to the United
States at Niblo's Garden in New York City in 1845. Important composers of the
day took this form quite seriously and brought new polkas into the New World.
A century and a half later, not wanting to be left too far behind, Boston's Pete
Sutton takes an interest in this lively dance music, and he sent this
announcement of a very current event - tonight.
<> "Hey, it's back - the Polka Party! Saturday, May 23 from 8pm to midnight at
the fabulous Polish American Club in East Cambridge (747 Cambridge St. A block
or so from Atwoods. They have a parking lot and pool table, bowling game, and
cold beer).
"Polkas by Al Janik's Plastyczny Ser Orkestra plus Polish food by Roberta and
Pete, all for ten bucks."
SOURCE: Pete Sutton, "Saint Stanislaus Day Party, May 23, 2009.
THERE IS NOT GOING TO BE . . a better opportunity (St. Stanislaus Day) to note
my fondest memories of Sister Mary Stanislaus: music teacher, piano tuner,
mental health worker, and, all the while, a Sister of St. Joseph. - Ed.

THE LIGHTS OUT
Hit the Road
The Lights Out, out of Boston, embarked on the band's first grand micro-tour and
dispatched this:
<> "We're wrapping up our virgin micro-tour (Brooklyn on Friday, Asbury Park on
Saturday) with a free all ages show at Patriot's Place in Foxboro on Sunday!
All ages, 5pm sharp. We had a GREAT time doing this last fall, and we're even
more excited to do it this Sunday."
The spokes-rocker for The Lights Out also let it be known that the "Heist!" EP
is out now.

DENNIS BRENNAN
Beyond "Engagement"
Dennis Brennan and band have had some pretty nifty goings-on since the release
of Brennan's "Engagement" album.
Dennis Brennan
"Engagement"
(CD, Hi-N-Dry, 2007)
Opening for the J. Geils Band at the House of Blues had to be a massive high.
Here is another short run of gigs that is looking most excellent:
<> " . . . DENNIS BRENNAN SOLO opening for CHICKENFOOT (Sammy Hagar, Joe
Satriani, Chad Smith and Michael Anthony), Tuesday, May 26, at the Middle East
Club, Cambridge [Massachusetts], and later that week in New York City and
Philadelphia."

CHARLIE FARREN
A Musical Retrospective Concert
At the Regent Theatre
Arlington, Massachusetts
Friday, May 29, 2009
Recent mailings from the Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts, include the
following show listing:
<> "Fri 5/29: Charlie Farren--A Musical Retrospective Concert"
SOURCE: Regent Theatre, "On the Big Screen," May 17, 2009.
This is likely to be of serious interest to a great many of our
readers.
A more recent Regent Theatre mailing added this:
"Please join us next Friday, May 29 at 8pm for this very special, exclusive
concert event from a true legend of the Boston/ New England music scene. The
performances - captured live on High Definition (HD) video - are sure to be
memorable and the house will definitely be rocking, so hope you can be part of
the festivities."
SOURCE: Regent Theatre, "Friday, May 29: Charlie Farren Musical Retrospective
Concert," May 21, 2009.
Many of us first learned of Charlie Farren from his involvement with a little
chamber music ensemble, The Joe Perry Project,
Joe Perry Project
"I've Got the Rock 'n' Rolls Again"
(CD, Columbia Records CK 37364, 1981)
along with his, Farren's, time with the Boston rock band, Farrenheit.
Farrenheit
"Farrenheit"
(CD, Warner Bros. Records 9 25564-2, 1987)
Charlie Farren should have a pretty decent career highlights film by now, and he
ought to have a big night at Arlington's Regent Theatre coming up on Friday, May
29.
Finding details of Charlie Farren's latest record release proved to be harder
than anticipated. Maybe we can run something on it later.

<> "As of a couple months ago, the Nintendo Wii started supporting SDHC cards, a
higher capacity version of the ubiquitous SD card. While the Wii doesn't have a
hard disk drive and only sports an internal 512 MB of flash memory, it now
supports up to 32 Gigs of storage via its SD card slot. That's 12 more GB than
the XBox 360's original HDD (and once you factor out space reserved for updates
and the like, more like 25 GB more). This is great news for anyone who has Rock
Band 2 for the Wii, since it vastly improves the storage capacity of the
system." SOURCE: Stephen Lewis, E-Mail Message, May 23, 2009.

BRIEF ITEMS :
: : : : :
.
DMZ
"The First Time"
<> My listing project turned up another record release from way back but that is
nonetheless new to me. It is
DMZ
"The First Time"
(EP [10" vinyl], Voxx VXS 200004/10, 1995)
DMZ was one of my favorite bands of the 1970s.
I have no recollection at all of this record. Time did not permit checking, but
my impression was that this may have been reissued since, in some form, on CD.
.
BITS AND PIECES
<> Carlene Barous will be at the International Pop Overthrow in Liverpool on May
25 and May 26, 2009 with a Carlene Barous Trio featuring keyboards, bass, and
drums. We hope it turns out to be a wonderful near-Beatle experience.
<> The Gordon Stone Band's sixth studio album, "Kill Two Birds," will be
available in July, according to a recent Gordon Stone mailing. Stone has been
an important figure in Vermont's popular music community for many years, though
some may know him from a time when he was based in the Pioneer Valley of western
Massachusetts. And, of course, from countless tours.
<> Sal Baglio, in an announcement of a show that happened on Thursday, gave
details of his band, The Grease Rockets.
: : : Sal Baglio
: : : Brad Hallen
: : : Marty Richards
: : : Jim Scoppa
http://www.myspace.com/thegreaserockets
A search of our computer files turned up nothing on this outfit, so it seems
likely it is new. The personnel roster makes these Grease Rockets look very
promising.
<> We received a note that Ray Mason has a new CD. The note did not say whether
this is a Ray Mason, Ray Mason Band, or Lonesome Brothers work. But a release
event is already on the schedule, so no doubt lots of details will be available
soon enough if not already.
<> The Weepies report that work on that duo's next album is going well.
.
PATTY LARKIN
Instructional Video
<> This also turned up in my cataloguing project:
Patty Larkin
"The Guitar of Patty Larkin:
Creating Powerful Arrangements"
(DVD, Homespun Video DVD-LAR-GT21, 2006)
I am quite certain we received no publicity on this DVD at the time it was
released and, in fact, I doubt I have ever even heard of it. This item ought to
be terrific. Patty Larkin has long been known highly favorably for her guitar
playing.
.
WEISSTRONAUTS
New Limited-Quantity EP
A recent Pete Weiss announcement of a concert that happened on Thursday also
included this:
<> "Our new, limited edition 4-song CD, 'The Weisstronauts in Memphis,' is hot
off the presses and will be available for sale at the show. The CD is strictly
limited to 300 copies and each one is 'hand numbered.' The songs were recorded
almost entirely live at historic Ardent Studios (Big Star, Led Zeppelin, Allman
Brothers, etc.) in Memphis and was engineered by the excellent Jeff Powell (Big
Star, Cat Power, etc.) in Memphis during our mini tour last June."

YAHOO NEWS HEADLINE
Monday Morning
Mandrell, McCoy and Clark join Country Music Hall of Fame
<> What delightful selections!
Roy Clark is a marvelous guitarist, and he has had hit records. If I remember
right, he was at the heart of a group of Nashville musicians who, after hours,
got together regularly to play what is now called traditional jazz, thus being a
forerunner of many modern fusion bands. (It seems to me that one of the members
of Homer and Jethro also took part in this legendary, influential country-jazz
phenomenon.)
Barbara Mandrell was not only country when country wasn't cool but also she and
her multi-instrumentalist sisters were/are a wonderful throwback to a type of
variety show that was very popular in the decades following the Civil War.
And while Charlie McCoy has had a stellar career as an accompanying musician, we
would revere him if he had done nothing more than make those great records with
Bob Dylan.
These are very capable musicians and entertainers and excellent choices for the
Country Music Hall of Fame.

MYLES CONNOR
<> We received, and appreciate, a substantial update about the career of Boston
rocker Myles Connor. I got interrupted partway into looking through the
material we were sent; so at the moment, all I can go on is memory.
Connor lately was involved in a large and very successful concert in eastern
Massachusetts. Evidently he is also promoting a book. As part of my
cataloguing project, I did an initial search for records by The Myles Connor
Band. My first try located none, but it did turn up this:
Myles Connor. "The Art of the Heist: Confessions of a Master Art Thief, Rock 'n'
Roller, and Prodigal Son." 1st ed. New York: Collins. 2009.
If you are not familiar with Connor's history, suffice it to say that this
book's title tells all you need to know for starters. Our hardcopy clipping
file, I have no doubt, has far, far more about Connor's history of legal
involvement than about his music.
It appears to me that "The Art of the Heist" has circulated fairly widely
already, thus, I guess, helping put Connor back in circulation. It looks as
though he may be on an upswing. It is an unanticipated twist in a very wild
story.
We will see whether more news follows.

JOHN FOGERTY

DETROIT (Billboard) - John Fogerty says he can "take a deep breath" now that

CAROL COLE
Rest in Peace
Carol Cole, sister of Natalie Cole, dead at 64
AP – Fri May 22, 5:09 pm ET
FILE - In this Feb. 8, 2009 file photo, Natalie Cole is shown...
LOS ANGELES - Natalie Cole's sister, actress Carol Cole, has died. She was 64.
I, PERSONALLY, TOTALLY MISSED . . . Carol Cole's career; but it seems likely
this story, though sad, would have a good deal of reader interest.

YAHOO MUSIC NEWS HEADLINE

AC/DC gig draws complaints for being 'too loud'
Yahoo! Music – Tue May 19, 7:00 am ET
AC/DC's gig at Munich's Olympic Stadium on Friday (May 15) drew over 100
complaints from irate residents.
MAYBE TUESDAY WAS . . a slow news day or maybe there is more to this story than
the headline and lead-in show; but on the face of it, it seems quite remarkable
that this made the music news. A rock band that is too loud ... I had no idea!
It is interesting, though, that AC/DC is still out there and still blasting
away. - Ed.
