BRATTLEBORO, VT, June 6 - Our brief lull may be over. This week we received
significantly more news e-mails than we had time to look through.

So many news items.

So little time.

Our main listening enjoyment this week came from a reworked, unreleased version
of the rock opera, "Skypaint." The official released version is

Russell Chudnofsky
"Skypaint: A Pop Opera"
(CD, Skypaint Music SPM001-2, 2002)

Notice that Chudnofsky is quite particular about calling this work a "pop"
opera.

There has not yet been opportunity to give the lyrics a close look; but
musically, "Skypaint" is a delight: it is pop without becoming sweet for
sweetness sake, and it is filled with unexpected little melodic and
accompaniment twists and turns without becoming inaccessible to populous
audiences.

Seeing and hearing a full staging of "Skypaint" is probably a wonderful
experience, but just hearing it is plenty good enough. This is great stuff.

Chudnofsky is a lucky fellow. A lot of composers of music on a grander scale
than, say, individual songs never get to hear a stage performance of their
works. New York Times music critic Charles C.B. Seymour wrote about this for
the Times way back during the Civil War, so clearly it is not the exclusive
problem of our modern age. It can be all too easy to neglect native talent.
"Skypaint" has earned some attention and it deserves even more.

consultant for the age-30-and-under market found nothing to get excited about
again this time. So brace yourself for another trip down memory lane. Many of
these acts are/were terrific, but few if any of them are on or particularly near
the current cutting edge. - Ed.

PRESS RELEASES THIS WEEK

<> Aimee Mann: East Coast Summer Tour Dates.

There were several others. I just ran out of time. One is about the
forthcoming new Whitney Houston release.

Another announced a deadline extension for "New Arrivals" series submissions.
If you would be interested in submitting one of your recordings for
consideration, you would probably want to hunt up a New Arrivals website right
away or hurry off to the MPress Records official site.

BRADLEY KINCAID
on Early Boston Radio

<> Thanks to Paul "Hank" Preston for mentioning, in an e-mail, Bradley Kincaid.
Kincaid was a Boston radio star by the 1930s, and he interested many New
Englanders in both country and folk music. This guy may not have been a native
of the Northeast, but he was very important to this region. Grandpa Jones, a
long-time notable country music entertainer, got the nickname, "Grandpa," while
performing with Bradley Kincaid on Boston radio. Here in Vermont, strange to
say, Grandpa Jones is best remembered by many for once having bought a car in
Rutland. Sometimes it can be hard to account for which recollections stick with
us longest.

SESSION AMERICANARAMA
in June

<> Session Americana mailings can be uncommonly funny, but sometimes the band's
serious data is interesting, too. SA June show listings combine these things.
Lately, there was an exchange starting, I guess, with a published hint that this
outfit is national and not really local, to which one of the SA folk responded,
saying Session Americana was performing in but a relatively small number of
clubs in an equally small geographic area.

This trio of shows, then, may be of some special interest because it presents
Session Americana as touring a little farther afield than they seem to claim and
hitting some pretty decent venues.

EILEEN ROSE
To Europe, to Europe, and to Europe

In an exchange of e-mails with rock singer-songwriter Eileen Rose, we learned
that she has three trips to Europe planned for the next few months including one
now-ish. She told us, among other things,

<> "My band now includes the Legendary Rich Gilbert. We live in Nashville and
are recording the new album here. It will be mixed by Tim Palmer (U2, Pearl
Jam, Tin Machine, Robert Plant, Goo Goo Dolls).

"We tour Europe regularly and have a lot of it coming up in October for the next
album's release."

SOURCE: Eileen Rose, E-Mail Message, June 3, 2009.

<> "We're off to England next week to play the opening of a new club in London,
then in July we do France Italy and Germany, then in October, with the new
record, we'll be in Europe for about three months. We're booked to play Croatia
and Serbia - new countries for both myself and Rich, so we're pretty excited."

SOURCE: Eileen Rose, E-Mail Message, June 4, 2009.

The album she referred to will be her third in three years, the latest one so
far being

Eileen Rose
"At Our Tables"
(CD, Evangeline Records GELM 4117, 2008)

http://www.eileenrose.com/

Rich Gilbert of the Eileen Rose Band fully deserves the designation,
"Legendary." We have followed him through a succession of Boston and Rhode
Island bands and have enjoyed him on many albums. It is probably mostly a
matter of opinion as to which of his groups he is most remembered for, but a
case could certainly be made for The Zulus, in which outfit he served with my
fellow Bangorian, Larry Bangor.

Zulus
"Down on the Floor"
(CD, Slash Records 25828, 1989)

Rich Gilbert and the Eileen Rose Band strikes me as a musical match made in
heaven. Maybe someday we will be saying that Gilbert is best remembered for
this group.

FRED PIKE
New England Country Music Query

<> It seems highly likely a Fred Pike I am aware of is a match for this one:

Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings
and the Twin River Boys
"Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings
and the Twin River Boys
Play Authentic Bluegrass Folk Music"
(LP, Osage, [1960s])

"My" Fred Pike is/was a country acoustic guitar picker. A Connecticut native,
he was residing and performing in Maine in the 1970s.

Back in the seventies, Houlton, Maine had a terrific Christian store on or just
off of the square. I never know what to call these businesses. Put this way,
it sounds as though they sell Christians. I've always had the same problem with
the "baby section" of department stores. Anyway, this shop in Houlton had a
fantastic section of country music vinyl by New England artists, and guitarist
Fred Pike was one of the stars. It seems to me some of the people he worked
with included Tim Farrell and Sam Tidwell.

Does anyone know what became of Fred Pike? The country fans I know were
familiar with Boston country singer Dave Pike but not with Maine guitarist Fred
Pike. So, I have totally lost track of him.

I am also curious as to whether, at the time of this record release, Fred Pike,
Bill Rawlings, and the Twin River Boys were based in Connecticut, Maine, or
somewhere else. Do you know?

If you can supply an answer to either of these questions or both, please e-mail
us by way of

fredremainslost@...

only convert it into an all-lowercase conventional e-mail address.

AIMEE MANN
East Coast Summer Tour Dates

For Immediate Release

June 2, 2009

AIMEE MANN ANNOUNCES 2009 EAST COAST SUMMER TOUR DATES

Tour to Kick Off at the Burlington International Waterfront Festival with Three
Dates at City Winery in NYC, MASS MoCA and the XPN Festival

After a brief hiatus Aimee Mann returns to the road for an East Coast run of
summer tour dates on the heels of last year's critically acclaimed release @#%&!
Smilers. Mojo hailed the album "a masterpiece," while People Magazine pronounced
"trends may come and go, but real artists, like this singer-songwriter remain."

Never one to rest on the laurels of her past, Aimee has been busy releasing
albums and touring for the better part of the last decade. Ending the millennium
with a bang, Mann was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and three Grammys
for the Magnolia Soundtrack which released simultaneously alongside her solo
album Bachelor No. 2. Mann continued her solo career with the 2002's Lost in
Space the second release on SuperEgo Records and then on to her first live CD
and DVD Live at St. Ann's Warehouse. With her 5th solo album The Forgotten Arm,
Mann delved head first into the realm of the concept album, following up the
next year with a turn at a Christmas album One More Drifter In The Snow, an
unexpected homage to the spooky beauty of the holiday season.

With thirteen new original songs, Mann's seventh solo CD Smilers has proven to
be a return to form. Producer Paul Bryan describes the record as "deceptively
powerful...very rich and grand-sounding". The songs range from the
stripped-down-to-basics of " Columbus Avenue ", to the almost Cars-esque
synth-pop of "Freeway", along side the classic Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell-era "
Phoenix ", and the hushed creepiness of "Little Tornado." The final song
"Ballantines" is a duet with Sean Hayes complete with barroom piano and trombone
section. All songs were penned by Mann with the exception of "True Believer"
which was co-written with fellow singer-songwriter Grant Lee Phillips.

An amalgamation of sounds, Aimee explains "we tried not to echo any previous
albums…for this one we wanted to use a different palate, thus replacing electric
guitars with distorted Wurlitzers, Clavinets, and analog synthesizers. We made
the low end and rhythm section full and organic-sounding, with Jay Bellrose's
quirky approach to percussion and my acoustic guitar together. For this album
the acoustic guitar is present in a new way, one that melds with Jay's rhythm
section and acts as an adjunct to the high-hat. On top of that we layered
detailed interwoven keyboards and on select songs added a lush string section;
on others a full horn section."

With fans and critics hailing the new CD and the single "Freeway' garnering a
solid amount of radio play across the country, Mann finished off a busy 2008
with a sold-out Summer, Fall and Christmas tour, along with appearances on The
View and The Tonight Show, and a concert filmed for the Ovation channel's Live
from the Artist's Den performance series. For further information please go to

<> As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite simple. Though

show listings would be of no interest at all to the great majority of our
readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more general
interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the main point of an
item of this sort is that an act has a new record. The show being announced is
of secondary interest to us - if that - as far as the contents of our newsletter
