BRATTLEBORO, VT, March 15 - Well. On Saturday afternoon a 2:27 p.m., I happen
to know, my Internet connection was knocked down, jumped up and down upon, and
otherwise severed, only to be re-established this (Monday) morning just before I
left home. The timing being what it is, I will quickly dust off the items I had
already compiled into this issue, maybe add two or three more, and then get this
number mailed belatedly.

Some of the items, sad to say, are out of date. It couldn't be helped.

FOX PASS
"Intemporel"

SODAFROG
"Hang the Moon"

Just before being unceremoniously run off the information superhighway, I
started on a capsule writeup of two excellent new albums that we had received in
the past day or two. "Intemporel" is top of the line Fox Pass. We go back with
this outfit to 1970s vinyl, and I don't recall ever hearing the band play with
such kick. This is a very fine collection of FxP songs, and the disc gets off
to an especially strong start. Excellent idea to bring back the great "Cool
Dreamer" for a band treatment. The prior Fox Pass CD was also quite fine; but
this time, these guys delivered the album I have been waiting for. If
"Intemporel" does not get Fox Pass more bookings, the region needs new clubs.

Equally enjoyable but very, very different is "Hang the Moon" by Sodafrog. On
the face of it, it seems to me that Sodafrog has the potential to be the one-man
band of Tom Janovitz or a larger ensemble when the Sodafrog Players sit in. For
me, "Hang the Moon" was a very eerie listening experience which would require
several more playings to have its full impact; but the album strikes a masterful
balance between diversity and focus, and it brings in a good range of sounds
without seeming at all overproduced. To give an idea, toward the end - and if I
remember right from two days ago, it was in an instrumental - some of the
picking is reminiscent of coffeehouse veteran Bill Staines, while elsewhere on
the disc the accordion and harmonium hint that the album may transform into The
Beach Boys' "Smiley Smile." There is a lot of terrain to be covered between
Bill Staines and "Smiley Smile." It is really unfortunate I couldn't have
written up "Hang the Moon" right after listening to it. So I will just
summarize as best I can by noting that right after mailing this newsletter I
plan to sign up for the Sodafrog mailing list. We have had nothing but good
experiences with music from people surnamed Janovitz, and Tom Janovitz has done
very well indeed to keep the clan's streak alive.

PETER GRAVES

Sorry to learn of the sudden and, I gather, unexpected death of actor Peter
Graves. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to honor him for
his part in that classic of television entertainment, "Mission Impossible," and
for having the range as an actor to ace his bizarre role in the film,
"Airplane." The ability to keep a straight face is a useful talent. A Google
search just now on Graves' stage name produced one hitlist entry featuring
changing voice balloons that provided a nice trip down Memory Lane.

A LOVE DOGS SHOW . . ought to be enough to get most feet in a dancing mood. But
we are running this item mostly because of the C-Note news it includes. We are
more than a little indebted to the Love Dogs for the information they send out
often about various venues and concert/dance series, including a few, here and
there, that are brand new. These Dogs circulate a terrific amount of data of
this sort and it cannot help but make the New England club circuit stronger. A

LADY GAGA
Rock Band Lady Gaga Pack 01

This Gaga lass is a bit of a mystery to me. While she seems to have a
reputation for being highly unconventional, none of this shows up in any of the
music I have heard. Ms. Gaga makes excellent pop singles that are just the
thing for national radio. And her music is coming to a gaming system near you.

The following, I gather, comes from a Rock Band announcement. - Ed.

Don't even lie! You're just as excited as any club kid that boundary-pushing pop
sensation Lady Gaga is coming to Rock Band next week. So, in the privacy of your
living room, break out the tight-fitting pleather and get your jam on (to the
tracks you, publicly, tell everyone you hate).

Of course, you could pretend you "accidentally" bought the Gaga Track Pack, when
you actually meant to purchase South Park chubby charmer Eric Cartman's
rendition of "Poker Face." Yup, that lil' ditty will also be available. See, now
you can cover up that undeniable desire to go goo-goo for Gaga with a veil of
irony!

THE STOMPERS
Saturday, March 20 Show Cancelled

<> We were very sorry to learn that the new "Can't Stop the Rock Show" of The
Stompers, which was to be held at the Tupelo Music Hall in Salisbury,
Massachusetts, Saturday, March 20, 2010, has been cancelled. A "business
conflict" was cited as the reason. These things, on occasion, do happen. But
this was looking to us like a sell-out, way in advance of the show date; and if
details could have been worked out, this engagement likely would have been good
for all concerned. Here's hoping another establishment can be lined up and a
new date set. - Ed.
