. . . . .

WE RECEIVED MORE NEWS this week, in our e-mail alone, than I have
time to work in here. So, the good news is that this was a very
strong week for local music news.

A good portion of what we received has to do with summer music
festivals. That material in copied in whole or darned close to it
toward the end of this issue.

HECTOR ON STILTS

This week's columns by Sheryl Hunter and Dave Madeloni in the Thursday
pull-out Arts & Entertainment sections of The Recorder out of
Greenfield, Massachusetts, and of the Brattleboro Reformer,
respectively, are about the Pittsfield, Massachusetts band,

HECTOR ON STILTS.

To this day, I still have not heard a note of this group's music. But
the two band members I interviewed are very personable, and they made
the band's music and stage presentation sound quite intriguing. So I
imagine there will be reader interest in this outfit. And with the
front-guys' family history in show business, the odds probably run
heavily in this band's favor to make it big, commercially.

No one at all requested a copy of my Hector on Stilts article in the
Vermont Guardian. To tell the truth, I don't have a distinct memory
of offering. So, I will offer now. If you would like a plain-text
copy of my Hector on Stilts article which ran in the Vermont Guardian
a week or two ago, write me by way of the following webpage

http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm

and I will send you a copy.

JIMMY RYAN
A Mandolin-Pickin' Classic

Jimmy Ryan goes mando a mando
By Alan Lewis | Special to the Vermont Guardian
Posted April 12, 2007

http://www.vermontguardian.com/culture/042007/JimmyRyan.shtml

If there is anything you can do, such as copy and paste this article's
direct Web address and e-mail it to friends, to help circulate this
Vermont Guardian notice, I would greatly appreciate your efforts.

JIMMY RYAN

is a

Vermont legend,

a

Boston-area legend,

a

Pioneer Valley legend

by way of his musical connection with Cheri Knight,

an

alternative-country music legend,

particularly from his days with Blood Oranges, and most of all a

mandolin-picking legend.

Jimmy Ryan is a mandolin scholar and enthusiast of the first rank, and
he is also a terrific interview. Do a Q&A exchange with this cat, and
you will be sure to learn a few new things.

So I would really like to see to it that this article finds its audience.

Ryan touched on many topics, and, as a result, this piece ought to be
of interest to a good variety of readers.

JOHN COSTER
At the Montague Book Mill

We do not do show listings as a general rule. I make exceptions for

JOHN COSTER

because I get precious few opportunities to post news of any sort
about him and because he made one of the greatest debut albums ever,
"Jacob's Reunion," which is right up there with, say, the John Prine
inaugural release. And did I mention that he wrote my all-time
favorite song? Well, he did. So here is a report on Coster's latest
gig, which just happens to be tonight:

"I'll be at the Montague Book Mill on April 14 doing my songs and
harmonica instrumentals with Mary Serreze playing keyboards and
special guests sitting in. Songwriters, Elric Walker and Nancy
Rockland Miller will join us and Celtic fiddler Katherine First.
There may be some other surprise visitors as well. We'll be mixing up
the songs with some hard driving traditional dance tunes that have
lifted spirits for generations. The Mill kitchen has beer and wine
and some good stuff on the menue. We hope you listen to the songs but
spontaneous dancing is also encouraged."

-- "Kitchen Party With John Coster," April 7, 2007

Check me on this, but Sheryl Hunter may have slightly updated this
listing in her latest "Sounds Local" column in the Greenfield Mass.

ROBIN RIGHT
"Right the First Time" Album
The CD-Reissue

Massachusetts veteran country singer

ROBIN RIGHT,

who is on the bill of Sunday's Cystic Fibrosis Jamboree at the
American Legion in Waltham, Massachusetts, has news on the CD-reissue
front that is sure to interest her fans as well as country music
lovers in general.

"Re-release - 'Right the First Time' is Robin's very first album. It
took ten years and a cast of thousands to produce. It was released as
an LP and cassette back before there were CDs. The album received
critical acclaim and many of the songs appeared on Top Ten independent
country music charts at the time. Last summer Robin had the album
digitally remixed and re-released as a CD. While she was at it, she
had three hidden bonus tracks added to the CD. You can listen to
samples and order the CD at www.cdbaby.com/ all/robinright and you can
download tracks from iTunes or any of your favorite music sites."

Must Be the Group's Greatest Hits
Live on DVD Vol. 1

"The Strangelings DVD now available!

"The Strangelings (Pete & Maura Kennedy; Chris & Meredith Thompson)
played their first (and so far only) show at the Pioneer Arts Center
of Easthampton back in January of this year. The show was video taped
with two cameras, and a magical moment was captured! The Nuah Suite
is a chain of enigmatic songs, a rich blend of Goddess imagery and
classical themes from around the world, woven into a complex fabric
that flows like an orchestral sonata. Glued together by the
charismatic stage presence and angelic harmonies of a trio of gorgeous
voices. Performance includes Dave Carter's "Tanglewood Tree", Fairport
Convention's "Matty Groves", more! To order your copy, go to our web
site at www.KennedysMusic.com"

CIVIC VIRTUE QUERY

If you are familiar with a work of public art in the Queens borough of
New York City called

CIVIC VIRTUE

and you are not too embarrassed to admit it, please e-mail us by way
of the following webpage:

http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm

There is an old, old story which has to do with the Hutchinson Family
only because the principal player THOUGHT it had to do with the
Hutchinsons. But this old tale is very interesting, filled with the
most astonishing coincidences, and often quite hilarious. The
notorious "Civic Virtue" statue and fountain figures into the story.

THE LEGAL PROFESSION
With Expert Piano Accompaniment

My current 19th-century project has to do with rivals to the
Hutchinson Family,

THE ALLEGHANIANS.

No one, as far as I can tell, has ever compiled a lot of information
about the Alleghanians, so when starting from scratch, I REALLY
started from scratch. Among much else, I am gathering information
about non-Alleghanians who, nonetheless, were somehow connected with
the group. And my favorite song title, so far, by one of these folks is

THE TRIAL BY JURY WALTZ.

The title sounds to me as though it blends Jimmie Rodgers, the
Yodeling Brakeman, with '60s protest songster Phil Ochs.

THERE IS A PARTICULAR TYPE of badly run-on press release and
miscellaneous announcement that I had planned to critique two issues
back. But funny thing ... I went through the news mailings in our
inbox and found not a single example. Last issue, though I was a lot
less focused on this question, nonetheless I do not recall seeing a
single example. Not a single example, two weeks in a row. It could
be that this problem is going away on its own.

However, the week that ended with my work on the Hector on Stilts
article for the Vermont Guardian involved a change of plans, and then
back again, as to the week's subject matter. The middle approach
would have involved capsule previews of at least a half-dozen shows
and most likely more. I was in a constant hurry. And I found that
many, many official websites are extremely difficulty to deal with - a
few impossibly so - for anyone other than those with serious time to kill.

We will almost certainly get back to this theme. But in the meantime
I strongly suggest that artists who have their own official websites
take a critical look at features which would make them difficult to
use for busy people in the music business including music journalists.

WINTERPILLS

If you are interested in looking through my latest notice of the
simply marvelous Pioneer Valley band,

WINTERPILLS,

go to

http://www.commonsnews.org/pdf/Commonspp18-21.pdf

and scroll down to page 20.

This is a different address than the one I posted last issue. Last
time I gave the address for the home page of the Windham County,
Vermont monthly newspaper, The Commons. The address I have posted
this week (just above) will take the reader straight to the .PDF file
which includes Page 20 and, thus, includes my Winterpills article.

Winterpills is among New England's finest rock bands these days, and
this is an act well worth following.

KURT VONNEGUT
Teacher of Writing
(and Editing)

In the early 1970s, an advertisement repeated in Rolling Stone, issue
after issue, for quite a while. I have no recollection as to who put
up the money for the ad nor what might have been their motivation for
funding it. All I remember is that it was written by

KURT VONNEGUT

and included the most Mark Twain-looking photo of him ever shot.

Every time you read this newsletter, you benefit from (or are injured
by) advice included in the Vonnegut ad.

This newsletter is edited to degrees that range from "edited with a
light hand," on one extreme, to

"Edited? You must be kidding!"

on the other. It all depends on how much time is available.

To whatever extent I can edit this literary work, one of my main rules
is to take out those things I notice which would cause the readers'
eyes to stop moving. You should not cause a reader's eyes to stop
moving inadvertently. When you do it, it should be intentional and
have some point to it.

So whatever I do to edit issues of this newsletter and whenever I do
it, I have Kurt Vonnegut in mind one hundred percent of the time.

I know practically nothing about Kurt Vonnegut and his main life's
work. I have no idea whether or not he was a good man. I only know
that he did us a good turn by offering advice that has proven to be
well worth following.

2007 MUSIC FESTIVALS

This newsletter is rough for lack of editing time and incomplete for
lack of compiling time. But there are just so many hours in the week,
and I am past due for switching to other work. The following
information about upcoming music festivals was simply copied from
press releases into this newsletter issue.

I have placed them here, I believe, in the order in which they appears
on the region's events calendars.

If you have friends who would be interested in any of the items in
this issue, please forward this newsletter to them. Thanks!

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Our readers are spread out all over the map. Though our name
is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, we have readers all across the
southern tier of states - with a large number in Florida and another
large number in the Atlanta area. Even within the Northeast, we have
readers in each of the six New England states and many in New York and
New Jersey. The great majority of show listings would be of no
interest at all to most of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

We also make a few exceptions for shows in the immediate Boston
area. Our single biggest concentration of readers, as far as we know,
is in and around Boston. We understand from e-mails we receive that
we are able to help turn out an audience to many entertainments in the
Boston area. But even in the case of Boston shows, we make few
exceptions.

So, the general rule of thumb is that we don't post show
listings. In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we do...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.

Exceptionally long addresses may need to be pasted into the
address field, which is probably toward the top of your browser
screen. Some addresses are so extremely long that they may have to be
pasted in two or more pieces.
