. . . . .

THIS WEEK, THE SAME AS the last several, was quite light on local
music news that was e-mailed to us. This is typically a slow-news
stretch of the calendar. It is my belief that a lot of people are
busy this time of year doing such things as playing in softball
leagues. I, for instance, would be out running these days if not for
the fact that I am nursing tendonitis in my right knee. My
inflammation will come down, softball games will be won and lost, and
we will have more news for you most likely later in the summer.

Here's what we've got this week.

JIMMY RYAN AND HAYRIDE

On the ol' NEMS CD player right now is "Jimmy Ryan and Hayride"
(Hi-N-Dry Records, 2007).

So far, there is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be my
favorite album so far by

JIMMY RYAN.

Ryan's last CD, the "Gospel Shirt" EP, was terrific. But I seldom
listen to EPs. I just don't. So having a full-length recording of
this quality is simply wonderful.

I got no information whatsoever to go along with the new disc except
what is on the CD's label which right now is in my player. So all I
can add, without opening up more windows than I care to, is that I
really love the female singer on the first cut, and I fully believe a
very large percentage of our readers are going to love the "Jimmy Ryan
and Hayride" CD just as I do.

It is fantastic to have hearing in 360 stereo once again.

[I have since listened to the Ryan record twice, and it is my personal
opinion that this is his best release ever. The very worst cut I would
rate as average, and everything else is better. This is one sort-of
Vermonter we can all be proud of.]

It is looking as though I may be interviewing

EILEEN ROSE

this coming week for an article to run in next issue. We'll know more
later.

THE SILVER LINING
Float Like a Butterfly
Sing Like a BeeGee

"This coming Saturday, June 16th will be the LAST Silver Lining gig in
Cambridge before we take a very long (probably about six months)
hiatus as Anna and Matt are having their first baby and we need to
finish the new tSL record. This show is going to be very special for
many reasons. Firstly, we'll be doing a few new covers (one soul, one
British invasion, and one Barry Gibb... hmmmm....) Secondly, we're
playing with the incredible Phil Aiken Army. And thirdly, this show
is at one of our favorite haunts, The Lizard Lounge.

"We'll be playing a nice long set and we hope you can make it!

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

The Lizard Lounge
1667 Mass Ave, Cambridge (between Harvard and
Porter Squares)

9:15 - 10:00 - The Jason Crigler Band
10:15 - 11:30 - The Silver Lining
11:45 - 1:00 - The Phil Aiken Army

$7 at the door...

"After this we've got one more show on July 6th in Boston, MA @ The
Basement in the 9pm slot, and then so long til next year!"

-- Silver Lining, "Last Silver Lining Show,"

NEMS POSTAL MAIL MAILBOX

I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO LEARN - and it is quite possible I never will
learn - whether any mail addressed to us failed to reach us. There
was a definite problem in mail deliveries to this building, but I do
not know whether it applied specifically to our address. To the very
best of my recollections, though, no one has told us he or she sent a
thing that I know for a fact never arrived. So barring any such news
in the future, it seems at least possible we may have been spared.

ORCHESTRA LUNA
With Heart

Here is a bit of news that at one time I would never have expected to see.

"ORCHESTRA LUNA (re-release in the UK)

"An amazing, unexpected thing. The guys who did this write:

"'Orchestra Luna's music was as if from some sort of parallel
universe, an alternative musical reality where elements of rock, pop,
1970's progressive styles and Broadway musicals stood side by side
quite normally and with perfect fit. If ever there existed music from
another time, place and universe - this was it.'

"The new CD has many new (old) photos of the band as well as this
giant piece I wrote about the whole OL 1 and 2 experience and early
days as a neophyte writer, music biz 'player'.

"It's released by Market Square under license from Sony UK. The
distributor in the UK is www.properdistribution.com The guys who did
this have been promoting the album to UK and US music media.

"It can be purchased from us via secure server at
www.marketsquarerecords.com"

-- Rick Berlin, "New Orchestra Luna News,"
June 10, 2007

AGAINST THE POSSIBILITY YOU MAY NOT KNOW, Orchestra Luna was a highly
unusual 1970s theatrical-rock band out of Boston, and one of their
album's cuts had a lock on Red Sox opening day on WBCN-FM

there's always next year

after

there's always next year.

DON HERBERT
Mister Wizard

This past week, I got up in the middle of the night per usual, and on
my radio alarm, on "Coast to Coast AM," was an interview with

DON HERBERT,

Mr. Wizard, who I grew up with on television. There will never be
another Mr. Wizard. No one else could ever do it so well.

It was great to hear his voice once again. Rest in peace, Mr. W.

ATTILA ZOLLER
80th Birthday Celebration

"Guitarist Gene Bertoncini will be performing a concert at the Vermont
Jazz Center on Saturday, June 16th at 8:00 PM in honor of his good
friend, Attila Zoller, who would have celebrated his 80th birthday
this June. Bertoncini will be joined by the ever-swinging rhythm
team of Dave Shapiro on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums. There may
also be guest appearances by friends of Attila during the evening. A
cocktail hour from 6:30-7:30 will be an opportunity to meet the
artists, and to remember VJC founder Attila Zoller. Refreshments will
be provided and beer & wine will be available for purchase, courtesy
of the Putney Inn."

-- Attila Zoller 80th Birthday Celebration,
June 10, 2007

THE VERMONT JAZZ CENTER is in this town, Brattleboro, Vermont.

Contrary to the assertion made below by Johnny Angel, I do not have an
AARP card.

I'm betting most of you don't, either.

ERIN McKEOWN
Forthcoming Album

I found the latest mailing from

ERIN McKEOWN

to be more than a little confusing regarding her forthcoming album or
albums. The following is the clearest part, to me at least:

"LIVE ALBUM due for FALL RELEASE... Another album from MCKEOWN in
2007? You got it! We're pleased to start spreading the news of a new
release from MCKEOWN and her LITTLE BIG BAND due in september,
followed by a big old US TOUR. Recorded in January, at the start of
the SINNERS tour, the new record features sparkling renditions of lots
of MCKEOWN fan favorites, plus a new tune!"

-- "Erin McKeown's Hot Hot Summer!" June 6, 2007

SANDY BEACH

In the current Boston Groupie News, my heroine, Miss Lyn, makes
mention of someone named Sandy Beach.

http://www.bostongroupienews.com/

I'm not quite sure who she means, but I wonder whether any of our
readers recall a classic 1960s radio host who went by the same name,

SANDY BEACH.

He got his start quite near here, on WKBK radio in Keene, New
Hampshire. If not for the fact that I have the world's worst radio
reception, I would be within WKBK's listening area right now.

In the 1960s, I used to go back and forth so often between AM stations
in Albany and Buffalo that it is hard at times to recall what host was
on which station. But I am quite certain Sandy Beach was on WPTR out
of Albany. I remember that the first time I heard The Beatles' album,
"Revolver," was on his show, and it seems to me I first heard The
Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" there, too.

Late at night, the AM radio reception in northern Maine was
unbelievably good, and the variety of music I could easily pull in was
phenomenal. It was something like listening to my beloved "Saturday
Morning With the Oldies," but back when the records were still new.

I used to listen to Celtics games on their opponents teams' stations.

COROLLA DeVILLE

I didn't remember until checking the BGN home page that tonight's
must-see, must-hear show by The Neighborhoods is also a CD-release
party for

COROLLA DeVILLE.

So I'll try out on you my Corolla DeVille lyrics, which are to be sung
to the tune of one of this operation's theme songs:

Corolla DeVille, Corolla DeVille
If these gals don't rock you
No other band will
If you loved them once
We think you'll love them still
Corolla, Corolla DeVille

The poetry, of course, is amazing.

ROCK NOTES

Does anyone out there know what has become of the Boston Globe's

ROCK NOTES

column by Jonathan Perry? We can ill afford to lose it, but the
column appears to run less often than in the past - I'm thinking maybe
every other week - which makes me nervous. If you do know what is
happening with "Rock Notes" and you would be willing to share your
information, please e-mail us by way of the following Web page:

http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm

"Rock Notes" has been a regular feature of Friday's Boston Globe since
the 1980s. But as of 6 p.m. this Friday, a "Rock Notes" column had
not been posted among the Boston Globe's Living/Arts Web pages, nor
did it appear in the Boston.com A&E section.

KELLY CLARKSON

I was surprised and even a little sorry to read in the Yahoo "In the
News" feature that

KELLY CLARKSON's

summer concert tour has been canceled because of disappointing ticket
sales. I know, I once badmouthed her. I have since decided that I
was the problem and she wasn't. I'm no huge fan; but she has shown
more independence and more rock spirit than I ever would have
imagined, and I appreciate both those things. Who knows what happens
next in her career.

A current publicity shot of Clarkson, which is all over the Web,
reminds me more than a little of a '60s publicity photo of Jody Miller
- possibly from the cover of her "Queen of the House" record.

RANI ARBO AND DAISY MAYHEM

The Signature Sounds band,

RANI ARBO AND DAISY MAYHEM,

has a big CD-release show nearby. And the latest columns by Dave
Madeloni (Brattleboro Reformer) and Sheryl Hunter (The Recorder,
Greenfield, Mass.) preview that event. As far as I know, Sheryl's
column still has not come online, so it would be necessary to get ten
fingers or at least five on a copy of the Arts and Entertainment
pullout section of Thursday's Recorder. Dave's column requires only a
modest amount of patience. If you check the following address later
today (Saturday) or anytime thereafter, you are likely to find Dave's
Daisy Mayhem column on the Web:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=45781020

Here are show details, supplied by the band:

June 16

Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts: Hilltown Folk

Eilen Jewell opens.

Isn't Rose Sinclair the woman who was in The Relative Strangers?

FLUTTR EFFECT

"Back home! After three weeks of intense UK touring we came home
inspired, exhausted and full of stories and ideas. One idea we've
considered for a while is taking some time off from touring and
spending some time writing and fine tuning. Oh, don't look so sad!
We'll be back shortly, stronger and better. But before we lock
ourselves in the basement we have two shows for you:

[It is not too early to reminisce about Thursday's Fluttr Effect Trio
show in Lynn, which was originally listed here.]

ROBIN LANE AND JOHNNY ANGEL
At the Abbey Lounge, July 21

"Saturday, July 21: Robin and Johnny Angel will play together at the
Abbey Lounge at 7pm on the pub stage. Probably joined by Asa Brebner,
too. No cover charge. Here is the email message Johnny Angel sent:

"'Subject: Dinosaurs Return To Walk The Earth!

"'In one small corner of the earth, anyway.

"'On July 21st, the Abbey Lounge pubstage will welcome Ms. Robin
Lane and Mr. Johnny Angel in their first ever onstage pairing at
7:00PM. It is likely that they will be augmented by Mr. Asa Brebner,
to be determined later.

"'Chartbusters classics as well as a likely salute to Mr Angel's
late creative partner Barbara Kitson will comprise the music itself.

"'Admission is free with AARP card. Actually, it's free anyway!
(But it isn't like you don't have said document anyway, true?)

"'Hope to see you there, JA/RL.'"

BASTILLE DAY
The Classic American Holiday

Here is the latest information oui have regarding the much-anticipated

SHAUN AND SUZI'S 14TH ANNUAL
BASTILLE DAY A GO-GO:

Shaun & Suzi's 14th Annual Bastille Day A Go-Go
Saturday, July 21 at the Lizard Lounge

(One week later than the official Bastille Day
as Suzi will be in France on the 14th.)

More Info: http://mardigrasballs.com/

Special Guests to be announced soon!

TIES BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND FRANCE stretch all the way back to
the very beginning and have long been strong. If you don't believe
me, I'll meet you on LaFayette Avenue and we can talk it over.

Can it be any wonder that among New England's bluegrass pioneers were
numbered Bob and Grace French?

One of New England's great resources, Bob Cousy, likes to point out
that he was conceived in France.

Go Cooz!

And go Bob, Grace, and Jeanne!

In the mid-1840s, some of the deep thinkers of New York decided that
the name of our country should be changed. They proposed Alleghania
as a new name. This is actually the origin of the name, The
Alleghanians, of the 19th-century vocal group I am currently writing
up. Their moniker was chosen specifically to give a sense of
American-ness; and at the moment they were choosing a name,
Alleghanians seemed the way to go. And what was one of their big
songs, starting in the 1840s and lasting for years? "The Marseillaise
Hymn."

Arise, proud children of France!

And best wishes to Shaun and Suzi.

THREE DAY THRESHOLD
Against the Grain
With Presence

"WE WON!

"WBZ has awarded

THREE DAY THRESHOLD

with a 2007 WBZ TV 'A-List' Award in Arts and Entertainment Awards for
'Best Stage Presence'!

"On behalf of everyone in the band, we want to thank everyone who
helped us out and voted. Over 78,000 votes were cast overall. This
is a really big honor, especially considering the official release of
our new CD, 'Against the Grain,' on June 23rd at the Cambridge Elks
Lodge."

-- Three Day Threshold, "Good News Comes in
Three's," June 14, 2007

HIPPIEFEST
Talkin' 'Bout My Generation

Normally this sort of show would strike me as a really bad idea. But
I would gladly go anytime to a festival where The Zombies are
represented by Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone. So yes, this
Hippiefest thing is looking pretty good. Let's have some good lovin',
you know what I mean...

Inspiration of the moment: The Rascals, The Turtles.

Here are some details as they were sent to us:

Friday, July 27
Chevrolet Theatre, Wallingford, CT

The Turtles, Felix Cavaliere's Rascals, The Zombies, Mountain, Mitch
Ryder, Badfinger, Country Joe McDonald

-- Rebecca Shapiro, "Hippiefest Brings '60s and
'70s Icons to Centerstage," June 14, 2007

We understand that tickets for the Wallingford, Connecticut show are
or will be available through Ticketmaster.

The Wallingford production is not the only New England Hippiefest
show, it is just the first.

Her hair is soft and brown
Her eyes are clear and bright
But she's not there...

ALLEGHANIANS

I am self-publishing my

ALLEGHANIANS

biographical booklet in Web pages on the Internet. By Friday
(yesterday), I was up to the first couple pages of Chapter 4. Since
there will be only eight chapters, you can see that this is reasonably
far along.

This is rather specialized stuff which would appeal mostly to people
with real interest in 19th-century American popular music history. If
anyone out there would like to take a look at the booklet anyway,
please let me know and I will send a link once my booklet is a bit
further along.

My best e-mail address for things such as this is posted at the
following Web page:

http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm

Yahoo has already indexed the first part of my Alleghanians booklet,
so it may be getting readers earlier than I had reckoned.

One of the readers of my Hutchinson Family book hit the nail right on
the head when he said he never realized that any people back in the
mid-19th-century traveled as much as the Hutchinsons did. I didn't
realize it, either, until I got well into researching the group. So
it might be of some interest and a real surprise that the Alleghanians
traveled far more widely than the Hutchinsons ever did. The
Alleghanians "world tour" took them across the South Pacific, where
they gave concerts at several stops along the way, including at such
spots as Hawaii, Rarotonga, and Tahiti. They came home by way of
South America. The Alleghanians made the obligatory trip to England
but also toured through continental Europe. They traveled through
Canada as far afield as the Canadian Northwest. Trips through the
American South and through the cities and mining camps of the
California Gold Rush were also well ahead of their times.

CIVIL WAR

Do we have any Civil War buffs among our readers? There are lots of
them out there, so I imagine we do. The reason I ask is that I am at
present reading the book, "The Puritans in Holland, England, and
America," by Douglas Campbell whose older brother,

CLEAVELAND J. CAMPBELL,

was a really well-known Civil War hero.

Just thought I'd mention it. The Douglas Campbell book, at the time
of publication, represented a radical new look at early American
history. It is a very fine book, and I am enjoying reading it
tremendously.

Another Civil War hero,

WALTER GOODALE MORRILL,

also came up recently. As far as I am aware, he was not quite as
well-known as Cleaveland J. Campbell. Anyway, Walter G. Morrill came
up because of speculation that my cousin Sandra might be related to him.

And then in my Alleghanians booklet is a cameo appearance by one Capt.
Ulysses S. Grant, who went on to some small degree of renown a couple
years later.

this issue, please forward this newsletter to them. Thanks!

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Our readers are spread out all over the map. Though our name
is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, we have readers all across the
southern tier of states - with large numbers in Florida generally, the
Atlanta area, and Greater Los Angeles. Even within the Northeast, we
have readers in each of the six New England states and many in New
York and New Jersey. The great majority of show listings would be of
no interest at all to most of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

We also make a few exceptions for shows in the immediate Boston
area. Our single biggest concentration of readers, as far as we know,
is in and around Boston. We understand from e-mails we receive that
we are able to help turn out an audience to many entertainments in the
Boston area. But even in the case of Boston shows, we make few
exceptions.

So, the general rule of thumb is that we don't post show
listings. In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we do...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.

Exceptionally long addresses may need to be pasted into the
address field, which is probably toward the top of your browser
screen. Some addresses are so extremely long that they may have to be
pasted in two or more pieces.
