. . . . .
BRATTLEBORO, VT, September 21 - News is still not exactly being
e-mailed to us in big quantities. I would have expected activity to
have picked up more by now. Nonetheless, it seems to me we have a
decent amount of material here and also decent variety.
I have a book manuscript that I had hoped to mail out by the end of
LAST week that is still not ready. So my plan is to get this
newsletter issue e-mailed as early as possible and then get back to
work on the book.
We have some longer items toward the end of this newsletter issue. We
have copied an announcement about the upcoming
BUNRATTY'S REUNION 2.
That ought to interest a lot of folks. Then we have nothing less than
an item about a video by the
JOE HARVARD BAND.
And then there is a press release about a new Boston to-be-annual event,
LILY PAD'S FIRST ANNUAL PIANO FESTIVAL.
I am having hearing trouble again, but I believe it may be nothing to
be concerned about. I got a refill for the prescription medicine I
have been taking for an infected tooth. For me at least, this
antibiotic has two main side effects, and I believe one of the side
effects has stopped up my right ear. I believe the trouble will go
away as soon as I stop the medicine, if not before.
I mention this hearing trouble because it kept me from listening to a
new arrival here, a CD, "Satisfied," by what might seem at first like
an unusual duo,
JOHN SEBASTIAN
and
DAVID GRISMAN.
I think, though, as we get psyched for one major 2008 event, the 50th
anniversary of the old Harvard Square
CLUB 47, (Club Passim)
a lot of people will understand how totally sensible this pairing is.
The Club 47/Harvard Square/Boston scene was one of several VERY
important 1950s/1960s folk communities that communicated with one
another and shuttled performers back and forth. And when it came to
folkies going electric, these two really brought it to Boston.
Mandolinist David Grisman was a member of a fantastic Bosstown
psychedelic rock band,
EARTH OPERA.
And John Sebastian, of the electric The Lovin' Spoonful, was a veteran
of one of the folkiest spots in all of New England,
NOEL'S MUSIC SHOP
in Keene, New Hampshire. I used to shop at Noel's, myself, and loved
the place. It was one of the greatest country music record stores in
all of New England (I got all but one of my JOY GOODNOW records
there), and it had a lot of other really funky sorts of music, too.
Anyway, I used to know a local autoharpist who was, among much else, a
John Sebastian fanatic. And it was a major high point for me to once
perform the Spoonful's "Lovin' You" for this guy.
And though I have heard a lot of really fine mandolinists in my day,
David Grisman played the single best mando line I ever heard. And
when it comes to who really spread the word about this instrument, ace
mandolinist
JIMMY RYAN
swears by David Grisman as THE '60s/'70s popularizer of the mandolin.
So I decided to hold off on playing this album, thinking it might be
best to actually be able to hear it the first time, and my ear is
still a-ailin'.
So this is probably a treasure, but we're going to get to it later.
Through a major coincidence ... I didn't know this David Grisman/John
Sebastian album was coming our way ... I had two recent John Sebastian
moments.
First, I happened upon a recent photo of him that made him look like
GARY SHANE.
Amazing! And then I had reason to research the harmonica and happened
upon a notice of an early appearance by harmonica soloist
JOHN SEBASTIAN,
the FATHER of THIS John Sebastian. So it really took me by surprise
to find this new album, "Satisfied," by John Sebastian and David
Grisman in our mail.
Here is what we received in our e-mail for news...

35th Anniversary
BANJO DAN AND THE MID-NITE PLOWBOYS
"As the leaves begin to turn here in beautiful bucolic Vermont, Banjo
Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys are winding up another summer touring
season. We've played for a lot of fine folks around New England, and
we'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for turning off the
tube and coming out to support live music and those of us foolish
enough to try to make a living at it. We're really grateful for all
the friends and fans who make up our audience, purchase our CDs, and
stay with us over the years. And we're talking a lot of years. This
month we celebrate our 35th anniversary! I guess the bluegrass is
really flowing in our veins (visualize that if you can) - it's been a
long haul and worth every mile."

BUNRATTY'S REUNION II
Sunday, October 21
Bunratty's Reunion - 2
To Benefit the Abel Harris Fund at the Youth
Enrichment Service (Y.E.S.)
Sunday, October 21 at Fire Fly's, 2-9:00 PM
(Marlborough, MA)
It's hard to believe it's been almost two years since the first
reunion. The consistent feedback from the first reunion was ...
although it was a great show, it was too long and not enough time for
socializing. So, Bunz-2 will be a few hours shorter with more time
between sets.
Why Fire Fly's you ask? It's a great room and they have great food.
Just ask the bands that play there. Including many bands and
musicians from the Bunratty's days including ... James Montgomery,
Bruce Marshall, The Fools, Johnny A, Entrain, Boston Horns, Memphis
Rockabilly, and Barrence Whitfield to name just a few.
Plus there are six pool tables and plenty of TVs to watch the Patriots
and hopefully the Red Sox. Fire Fly's, 350 East Main St (Rt 20),
Marlborough, MA 01752.
Who's Playing at Bunz-2? As of this writing we have about half the
entertainment confirmed. To name just a few ... Bruce Marshall and
the Clue, The Wrecking Crew, Jamie Shaler (acoustically), Gary Shane
(acoustically), and one hell of a jam session. A few more great acts
will be confirmed in the next week or so. Check www.bunrattys.com
over the couple weeks for the final line-up.
The Abel Harris Fund: First of all, a sad reminder that it's been 20
years since we lost our good friend and co-worker. Please never
forget what a big heart Abel had. On a positive note, a scholarship
has been paid every year since to a deserving student at the Youth
Enrichment Services. The goal of this reunion is to raise at least
$2000. That's what is needed to cover the scholarship until Bunz-3 in
2009.
Raffle Prizes Wanted: To help raise a few extra bucks for the Abel
Harris Fund, our goal to have a raffle drawing just before each band
goes on stage. BUT, we need prizes. If you or your company would like
to make a prize donation to the Bunz-2 raffle, it would be greatly
appreciated. Contact David Gee. Phone: 508-970-0066 x12 email:

Rounder Records CD-Release Announcement
A CHRISTMAS CELTIC SOJOURN, LIVE
November 2007
Various Artists
A Christmas Celtic Sojourn, Live (CD & DVD)
Rounder Records
Street Date: November 6, 2007
For nearly two decades, the Christmas edition of Brian O'Donovan's
radio program, A Celtic Sojourn, has been a seasonal highlight for
National Public Radio audiences. This tradition has now inspired the
extraordinary holiday concert presented on this CD and DVD. Says
O'Donovan, "Our initial idea was simple: replicate the gatherings that
we love to have at this time of year with family and friends. Share
some songs, read some poetry, tell a few stories, and dance. We simply
decided to expand the guest list!" Here is a delightful panoply of
Celtic Christmas songs, superbly recorded. Nollaig faoi shona dhuit
(Merry Christmas)!
JOE HARVARD BAND VIDEO
We'd be wicked grateful if you could please take five minutes and give
us a hand, as we are hoping to make a splash on Neil Young's Living
With War website, representing Boston by kicking ass
in the video category. We decided to put together an
honest-to-goodness homemade rock video of "[How I
Became A] Patriotic Pseudo Pacifist," one of our most
popular live numbers and a song special to us as it's
the true story of Joe's late brother, former Marine
Corps Lance Corporal Bobby Trainor. The song rocks
like hell, and the video isn't too bad either. Both
the video and the audio recording were done at One
Bedroom Studio, AKA Joe's living room on Fourth Ave,
Asbury Park, and the vid has already hit #26,
unannounced. With your help we can go Top Ten!
Just take this link directly to Neil's site:
http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/lwwvideospage.html
and select the "Patriotic Pseudo Pacifist" video from the first row of
titles, and then watch the video.
NEXT take a pop over to
http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/lwwsongspage.html
to preview the almost-finished mix of the song - the first for our new
record - "[How I Became A] Patriotic Pseudo Pacifist," and dig that
too. TIP: there are a lot of songs on the list, so once you get to
the audio page, use your menu bar's Edit menu, Find (on this page)
command [or just hit your keyboard's F4 key] and enter the word
patriotic, then hit the Find next button and it'll take you to the
link to our tune. And our rank goes up. That's it ... and thanks so
much for helping AP's hardest working underdog band. If you like the
vid, go back for more, and pass this on to friends, and we'll love you
even more.
While the Joe Harvard Band is focusing on recording our rekkerd,
"Makin' It Hot For 'Em," we aren't doing too many local live shows
[unless you want to drive to Boston on Sept. 22nd to see the third
Jersey Junket, this time with the Commons joining the Joe Harvard Band
at the Plough and Stars]. Sunday nite tho' Joe will be at Twisted
Tree for Upstage Mag's Springsteen edition of Twisted Covers, playing
a few of his fave toonz from "Nebraska."
Thanks for your support.

The Lily Pad's 1st annual PIANO Festival, curated by resident piano
man Gill Aharon, celebrates Boston 's piano culture and the Lily Pad's
key role in fostering and sustaining that culture. The Lily Pad,
hailed as one of the centers for improvised music in the Boston-area,
has excellent acoustics and Aharon's 7 ft. grand piano reigns over the
space's aural and visual landscape. The piano, though not always
highlighted in the regular schedule, is ever present.
On its way to becoming an annual showcase, the PIANO Festival will
shine a 6-day spotlight on a wide variety of local piano talents and
styles. Aharon envisions the Lily Pad's PIANO Festival as an
opportunity to collaborate across genres. He also points out that he
is providing an opportunity for pianists with "desperately different
styles" to find their commonality while celebrating their differences.
As of this writing, the extremes and in-betweens will be covered by
such local piano luminaries as Joanne Brackeen, David Maxwell, Kevin
Harris, Daniela Schaechter, Ben Schwendener, Yoko Miwa, and many many
more.
Aharon has structured the PIANO Festival to appeal to all different
ages and tastes. The current schedule* for the entire festival,
including the "appetizers" and "dessert", is as follows [*visit the

believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.
As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another

otherwise confirming details.
