BRATTLEBORO, VT, October 12 - We are faced with yet another slow news
week, and it is impossible, so far, to know what to make of this
overall. One small thing is very clear: we need to get on some more
mailing lists. It is just in the nature of things that, over time,
some acts will grow less active, take a break for a time, or become
inactive altogether. We need to get on new mailing lists, as some of
the old ones trail off. Otherwise, though, this lengthy slow spell is
very puzzling. But slow or not, things are still happening; and we
will concentrate on what IS going on rather than what is not.
One of the best things out there comes from the mailing list of
PETE WEISS
of (among much else) The Weisstronauts and Vermont's Verdant Recording
Studio. Pete has his own newsletter about various efforts that
involve him, including but by no means limited to record production.
We really like to copy items, here and there, from Pete's newsletter
to help get the word around but also, quite simply, because we believe
those items will be of interest to many of our readers. The latest
Pete Weiss newsletter is out now, and we have items from it copied below.
I got a sneak peek at Dave Madeloni's latest column, which is about
CHRIS O'BRIEN.
It appears on page 10 in the Ovation! pullout section of the Thursday,
October 11 issue of our local newspaper, the Brattleboro Reformer.
In the Thursday, October 11 issue of The Recorder out of Greenfield,
Massachusetts, on pages 3-4 in the Arts and Entertainment pullout
section is Sheryl Hunter's "Sounds Local" column, which leads off with
a feature item about
THE NIELDS.
I really did get nothing but a sneak peek so far, so I don't know a
lot yet about the
KATIE LIIMATAINEN
benefit show; but this is the middle item in Sheryl's column.
Sheryl's final feature item is about roots-rocker
EILEN JEWELL.
I'll have to check out both columns later, but they look as though
they will make for excellent reading when I do.
When it started looking like this might wind up being a really slow
news week (which it has), I asked a couple folks if they know of any
current news stories I might not already have. My e-friend Maria
McLaughlin responded with information about a show to benefit an
in-progress documentary film project about select Boston-area
musicians. Here it is:
"October 25 (Thursday)
"There's a benefit event at Club Passim for the in-progress
documentary film called 'On and Off Mass. Ave.' (about Boston-area
singer-songwriters). Performers include Rose Polenzani, Jennifer
Kimball, Tim Gearan, Brian Webb, Anne Heaton, Chris O'Brien, Meg
Hutchinson, and others. 7:30pm, $20 regular price / $15 member price

-- Pete Weiss News, October 11, 2007
A COUPLE OF THE FOLKS to be featured in the "On and Off Mass. Ave."
documentary are making some noise in my immediate area. As noted above,
CHRIS O'BRIEN
is the featured artist this week in Dave Madeloni's column.
MEG HUTCHINSON
will soon be splitting a bill with Tracy Grammer at our Hooker-Dunham
Theatre, about five blocks from here. Sounds local to me...
And finally, as I end the preamble to this issue, let me say that
today I was out jogging in some of the worst running conditions I have
ever been a part of. Don't ever let anyone tell you I am not
dedicated to my sport. Except when there is snow and ice on the
ground. I draw the line this side of snow and ice.
TREE BY LEAF
Taking a Break;
Planning To Come Back Later
With New Songs
and
Old Mailing List Technology
"Tree by Leaf is coming close to taking a long break from shows. Some
of us are having babies and we need to re-evaluate how we are doing
the music and what can be done better, etc. We are excited to learn a
new set list and hopefully get back to doing shows in the spring
sometime with a new bunch of songs."
-- Tree by Leaf, "Last Message (For a While),"
October 11, 2007
IN OTHER TREE BY LEAF NEWS when these Maine folks return to playing
out, they plan to switch to hardcopy mailings. This crew has one
SERIOUS case of nostalgia for the last century...
Be that as it may, I subscribed to the upcoming Tree by Leaf snailmail
mailing list without delay.
Lately, I have been pulling my favorite releases out of the stacks and
stacks of CDs in my living room and putting them away so I can find
them more easily (which is to say, find them at all). Tree by Leaf's
"Of the Black and the Blue" is definitely among my favorites, and it
is among those I am honoring by filing them.

BRIEF ITEMS :
WHO SHOT HOLLYWOOD
And the Skeggie Kendall Connection
"WHO SHOT HOLLYWOOD: Old friend Greg 'Skeggie' Kendall (Lifeboat,
Brothers Kendall, Tackle Box) transplanted his family from Boston to
Amherst, Massachusetts (right down the road from Verdant) a few years
ago and his sons Lucas and Dana promptly started a very cool band.
This band is called Who Shot Hollywood, and they've been enjoying some
pretty nifty success of late, opening for big names such as Throwing
Muses and being invited to play CMJ. Sounds fairly straightforward,
right? Well hang on ... the oldest member of Who Shot Hollywood is
all of 13 years old! These kids not only rock, but write very
sophisticated, catchy, and clever songs. I had the pleasure of
recording several songs with them, and also mixing a few more that
were recorded at their house by uncle Bob Kendall. Please check out:

BLANKETEER
An Announcement
In announcing an appearance that was set for last (Thursday) evening,
Blanketeer wrote,
"This is also our last show for a while until we actually, not kidding
... FINISH our next album (songs from which will be played on Thursday)."
-- "Updates and News About Blanketeer,"
October 11, 2007
SESSION AMERICANA
And the New Sean Staples Tune
"Session Americana lives and breathes. Sean [Staples] just wrote a
beautiful new tune that we'll all be playing soon about 'Missing What
Might Have Been.'"
-- Session Americana Mailing, October 11, 2007
THE MYSTIX
"Blue Morning" CD Release
"It is a very BIG week for The Mystix!
"Tuesday, October 9, 2007 will see the release of BLUE MORNING, the
hot new CD by the band.
"The Patriot Ledger has this to say about it:
"' ... the Mystix sound is a panoply of American roots music, but
mostly a swampy, groove-oriented kind of rock, blues melting into
country, New Orleans cruising through Nashville on the way to
Chicago.' - Jay Miller"
-- The Mystix, "The Mystix CD Release!" October 8,
2007
EILEN JEWELL
On the Road She Sped
and on the Rails With Fred
"Eilen and the guys have returned from about three weeks on the road
and rails. Thanks to all who made it out to see us open for the great
Loretta Lynn (pics on the EJ site) a couple weeks ago. We followed
that show with a great tour through the Midwest (Indiana, Illinois)
and a detour to the northwest. ... Eilen played a packed homecoming
show in downtown Boise, Idaho. We capped it off by playing a show in
Madison, Wisconsin with Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs. A smoking
good time. Last week we journyed through the San Juan mountains of
New Mexico and Colorado as part of Roots on the Rails ... 7 days of
trains, small towns, beautiful views and cool shows with Fred Eaglesmith."

COUNTRY GAL ASHLEY GEARING
Invades Red Sox Country
Plus News of Forthcoming Single
"Just a note to tell our friends that Ashley just received a call from
The Boston Red Sox. She has been asked to sing at the first game of
the American League Championship this Friday night live on your FOX
T.V. channel as well as whatever sports radio channel covers the game
in your area.
"Ashley will be singing 'God Bless America' at the seventh-inning
stretch. Hope you have an opportunity to join us in watching The Red
Sox take on the Indians at Fenway Park, listen to Ashley honor America
and root our favorite team on!
"Check out her new website in anticipation of her new single to be
released by CURB RECORDS in January of 2008 at www.ashleygearing.com"

Playoffs," October 10, 2007
"SGT. PEPPER" IN MONAURAL
Pete Weiss' Take
"LISTENING TO: The mono version of 'Sgt. Pepper' (finally got my
hands on a clean copy, supposedly a 24-bit transfer from the master
reel!) Quite a thing; what really hits me is how 'band-like' they
sound, compared to the stereo version, which always struck me as
lacking a definitive 'played by people in a room' sound. The rhythm
tracks really gell, and the unbelievable bass lines jump out of the
speakers. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying this ... it's not my
fave Beatle album by a long shot, really."
-- Pete Weiss News, October 11, 2007
THAT is all the news we've got! This sure qualifies as a slow news
week, doesn't it?! But there is some pretty neat stuff here. And we
will see what next week brings, quantity-wise...

IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS WHO WOULD BE interested in any of the items in
this issue, please forward this newsletter to them. Thanks! We
believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.
As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.
We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.
In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...
... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.
