BRATTLEBORO, VT, December 1 - As an introduction to this issue of our
newsletter - the first in the second quarter of our cruise to Issue
1000 - let me just quote personally prized lyrics from a musical play
of maybe half a century ago:
But to me it's bully
It satisfies me fully
When I hear that thunder
Close at hand...
You may see what I mean, if you read far enough down this cyberpage.
Either way, this missive is about the thunder that is music to our ears.
We had a decent week of news e-mailings we received from artists and
their representatives. "Decent" this time of year, once seasonally
adjusted, becomes fantastic. So I would have to call this a very good
week.
We receive lots of invitations to attend events, and many of these
invitations are unrealistic to say the least: most on account of
distance but some because of the invitation coming really late. More
than anything else, I take these to mean that we are being told we
would be welcome if somehow we could get there. It took me very much
by surprise, then, that we were not invited to tonight's Winterpills
concert. Winterpills is my current favorite band, and they are
playing a venue - The Church in Brattleboro, Vermont - that I walk
right past twice a day, six days a week and run right past at other
times. Getting there would not have been the slightest problem. Go
figure.
Thanks to
THERESE
at Brooks library here in Brattleboro, Vermont. Therese did database
searches on behalf of my current main research project, and it looks
as though her results are falling into that category known as "the
gift that keeps on giving."
I saw Therese Friday; but I was having a frantic research day, making
up for lost research days both Thursday and Saturday, and never got a
chance to say "Thanks" in person.
BANJO DAN AND THE MID-NITE PLOWBOYS
Followup Regarding Jon Glik
Plus New Album in the Works
"First, the good news. Our friend Jon Glik has received a
much-needed transplant and is out of immediate danger. He still faces
a long recovery and enormous medical expenses. You can still help out
- and enjoy some wonderful music - by ordering a CD of 'With Friends
Like These' by The Lindner Brothers (Banjo Dan and Willy) featuring
Jon Glik on fiddle. ... And thank you once again.
"More good news. Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys are in the
studio right now recording a CD full of great new original songs, fan
favorites and a few surprises. We're looking forward to a release
early next year, and will keep you posted."

DUKE LEVINE
"Beneath the Blue" Solo CD
"Roughly 7 billion" is
1) the number of times Maria McLaughlin has heard Duke Levine live
2) the number of times Alan has heard Duke Levine on record
3) both
4) neither.
Well, no one is actually asking, but the correct answer would probably
be, "both."
The great Duke Levine has certainly been around a lot and made his
presence known.
I don't know whether my e-friend Maria would recall the first time she
ever heard Duke Levine; but in my case, I sure do. In the late-ish
1970s, while visiting the wonderful village of Worcester,
Massachusetts - a community which I believe may loom large in Levine's
background - I bought a vinyl record by a truly remarkable band called
CROCKETT:
part punk, part 1950s/1960s country, and a whole lot of everything else.
That outfit's teenage guitarist was none other than a teenage Duke
Levine. And this is when and how I first heard him. As the divine
Paula Kelley once said, everyone has to get started some way. And
being a guitarist in Crockett is a pretty good way to get started.
I have personally never heard a solo Duke Levine album, though I
remember reading a review of an early one in that much-missed music
journal, Boston Rock. Here is part of what we were sent about the
latest solo release:
"Duke Levine Releases 'Beneath the Blue,' his first solo album in 10
Years December 11th, 2007
"The performances on 'Beneath the Blue' (Loud, Loud Music Records)
were captured live in the studio, with an amazing group of players,
featuring Kevin Barry, guitar, lap steel (Mary Chapin Carpenter,
Mighty Sam McClain, Paula Cole), Paul Bryan, bass (Betty Levette, Alan
Toussaint & Elvis Costello), Jay Bellerose, drums (Robert
Plant/Allison Krauss, Sam Phillips, Solomon Burke) Kenny White,
keyboards (Peter Wolf ), Mike Rivard, upright bass (Club D'Elf,
Orchestra Morphine, Jonatha Brooke), and Dan Rieser, drums (Norah
Jones, Little Willies, Marcy Playground). The album features seven
new original songs as well as covers ranging from Burt Bacharach to
Duke Ellington and was produced by Duke Levine and longtime
collaborator Chris Rival. 'Beneath the Blue' is Duke Levine's fourth
solo album, and his first release in ten years."
-- Susan Scotti, "Duke Levine Releases 'Beneath
the Blue,'" November 26, 2007
LISA MARTIN
Two Items From Singer-Songwriter
Lisa Martin
"Thank you Motif Magazine!! I just stumbled across an article in the
current issue that lists my CD, 'Lisa Martin - Live!,' among the top
ten local CDs to stuff your stocking with this year! I'm in great
company with Maryann Rossoni and Becky Chace among others."
"[T]here's the RISA (Rhode Island Songwriters Association) Holiday
Show at the Courthouse Center for the Arts in North Kingston, Rhode
Island on December 8th. Many great artists will share the stage and
perform renditions of traditional and contemporary holiday and
seasonal music. Join in the fun and sing along!"
-- "Lisa Martin Live Music December 2008,"
November 26, 2007
I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE NAME, Maryann Rossoni, but being listed
along with Becky Chace does put Lisa Martin in good company. - Ed.
CHRIS TRAPPER
Two Items From Chris Trapper
of the Push Stars
"My new CD, 'It's Christmas Time,' is now available at
Christrapper.com. The short story behind this is that I was so tired
of all the holiday music I heard last year that I wanted to create a
record of 10 new, original holiday songs, with the hope that someday,
someone will be tired of my holiday music too! In all seriousness, it
was a really intense project, because I got to really think (and
write) about what Christmas means to me."
. . . . .
"Also, I have a song in a new movie called 'August Rush' starring
Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Terrence Howard and Keri
Russell. In the film, Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays a budding rock star,
and he sings my song (a love-lost song as he pines away for Keri
Russell) twice in two pinnacle scenes. This movie means a lot to me,
as it's all about the power of music. You can hear my song ('This
Time') in the trailer or by picking up the soundtrack on Columbia/Sony
music."
-- "Letter From Chris Trapper," November 26, 2007
MARK ERELLI
Home and Far Away
After speaking of life changes over the past year, in his latest
mailing, Mark Erelli said, "[M]usic continues to be a redemptive force
in my life. I would probably write and play these songs for my
bedroom walls if they were still my only audience. But for me, music
is meant to be a conversation; drawing inspiration from those who came
before me, and feeling lifted up by whoever comes to listen to me sing
in small rooms far from home."
-- "Mark Erelli December 2007 Newsletter,"

WEEPIES
New Everything
Well no wonder Steve Tannen of The Weepies didn't respond to my
folk-rock box set questions: he was probably a nervous wreck from
ch-ch-ch-changes. Here is an account of those changes with a Weepies
slant:
November 29, 2007
New Baby, New Record, New Year
First and foremost, we have a brand new baby boy! His name is Theo. He
is awesome. We've posted a few pictures of him in the picture section
of our myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/theweepies
Second, there is a new Weepies record! It has 14 new tracks. We
recorded it at home, with much help once again from Whynot Jansveld,
Frank Lenz, Meghan Toohey and some other amazing musicians and
friends. We can't wait for you to hear the new music. Nettwerk Records
will once again be putting the CD out into the world; release
information coming soon.
We are spending the end of this year close to home, but we expect to
take Theo on tour in 2008. He appears ready to rock.

BRIEF ITEMS :
EILEEN ROSE
New Album on the Way
"I'll have a new record out in 2008. It was recorded this past summer
at Rustbelt Studios in Detroit. We, the Holy Wreck and myself, worked
with the great production team of Al Sutton and Eric Hoegemeyer, along
with some of the best players Detroit has to offer. I'm not sure what
to tell you about the songs. I feel they're my best but you'll be the
judge of that when you hear them. Release details are still being
ironed out. You know we'll post the info (with exclamation points,
etc.) as soon as it's official."
-- "News From Eileen Rose," November 24, 2007
REBECCA HALL AND KEN ANDERSON
"Hungrytown" CD
"'Hungrytown,' the album, sputtered to life in a double-wide deep in
the Blue Ridge Mountains, not too far from its namesake, in early
2005. The entire cast of the Virginia Ramblers was on hand to record
the music for the title track as well as a couple of other songs that
had been written at that time. Since then, we've written more songs,
done more recording, went to a fishing clinic, did a bunch of tours,
rented a documentary on penguins and Ken made a tiny man entirely out
of earwax. Despite these setbacks, we're happy to say that Hungrytown
is now finished and down at the factory."
-- Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, "December 2007
Newsdumpster," November 26, 2007
HALL AND ANDERSON HAVE a pre-release show December 2 at Caffe Lena in
Saratoga Springs, New York.
ERIN McKEOWN
Back Home
The early going of the latest ERIN McKEOWN newsletter contains this:
"40 shows in 56 days! 27 states visited! Millions served! WOW!
McKeown and her intrepid LITTLE BIG BAND have finally landed after her
Biggest Tour Yet."
-- "Erin McKeown News," November 26, 2007
IS THERE EXCITEMENT in the Erin McKeown camp or what?! She also
earned this print description:
"McKeown and her two boys turned 'Blackbirds' into something akin to
Led Zeppelin's 'Trampled Under Foot' - with a full-out organ solo and
psychedelic bridge - while maintaining its sweet, dreamy qualities."
JOSH BROOKS
Looking Forward To Recording
"After three months of swimming against the tide in my new teaching
job, I'm finding a little balance again, have written some new tunes,
and am excited about doing some recording this winter."
-- "Josh Brooks and His Seasonal Ramblings,"
November 26, 2007
THIS, OF COURSE, IS A FESTIVE time of year, with cheery music
everywhere such as a personal favorite, Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh
Ride." Josh Brooks makes his own contribution to the season's
merriment with his new MySpace track, "This Bar Is Full of Broken
Hearts Tonight." How can "Jingle Bells" compete with such sentiments.
BECKY C AND BRIAN M
Can't Let the Becky Chace Tour
End Just Yet
"We ... head to Portland for two shows December 14th and 15th. We're
all intensified and excited having just come off our tour so we hope
you can catch us before we go back to our old selves!"
-- Becky and Brian, "Upcoming Shows in Maine,
Connecticut, Rhode Island," November 28, 2007
UNCLE EARL
The Video
IT MIGHT BE HARD NOT TO make the new Uncle Earl YouTube video sound
silly, but this excerpt from a November 28 Rounder Records press
release goes relatively less far in that direction:
"Stringband sensations Uncle Earl have just released the video for
their song 'Streak o' Lean, Streak o' Fat' from their latest album
Waterloo, Tennessee. Set in an anonymous Chinese restaurant, the
video follows a chaotically unfolding Kung Fu clogging battle between
warring alien forces that breaks out where touring stringband Uncle
Earl has stopped for dinner. Sensing impending dance madness, the
Uncle Earl 'g'Earls' leap for their instruments and play a rousing
tune (with original Chinese lyrics) to spur the action. When the
fighting gets dirty, Uncle Earl intervenes and they unite the two
warring tribes in a dance of joy and cooperation. Uncle Earl
producer, Led Zeppelin's legendary multi-instrumentalist John Paul
Jones, makes an appearance on piano.
"The concept for the video was a collaborative effort between director
Tom Krueger (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, U2), producer Brad Paul,
and band member Kristin Andreassen. Other band members, listed
according to instruments they play in the video, include KC Groves on
bass, Rayna Gellert on fiddle, and Abigail Washburn on banjo and vocal
(singing her own original Chinese lyrics)."
PRESS RELEASES FROM ROUNDER RECORDS have improved markedly in recent
months. It used to be that their press releases were nothing but
infomercials with practically no space allowed for the "info" part of
that word. They were corporate in their orientation to the extreme,
arrogantly lacing their mailings with information THEY need you to
know and including little, if anything, else.
Where the 1990s marketing push, toward a customer orientation in
business, got sidetracked is beyond me.
It is is nice to see, on Rounder's end at least, some attempt by
publicists to be helpful once again.
end BRIEF ITEMS
ANAIS MITCHELL
"Hadestown (A Folk Opera)"
BALLAD OPERAS WERE AMONG THE EARLY wellsprings of American popular
music. With her "Hadestown," Vermont's Anais Mitchell is tapping into
something quite ancient, by American standards.
We were approached earlier about the prospects of us helping to get
word out about these shows, and I responded semi-promptly. But we
heard nothing further. We could have helped bigtime with promoting
the "Hadestown" staging at the Somerville Theatre. I can only assume
that this production is already getting all the promotional push it
needs. Nonetheless, the following November 29 press release from
South Burlington, Vermont's Higher Ground is likely to interest many
of our readers.
HADESTOWN (a folk opera)
Anais Mitchell's folk opera launches Vermont Tour TONIGHT for 8 select
dates!
"hadestown is a post-apocalyptic mix of depression-era labor politics
and the myth of orpheus & eurydice, a timeless fable about the power
of music over death"
Thu, Nov 29 - Barre Opera House - Barre, VT
Fri, Nov 30 - Paramount Theater - Rutland, VT
Sat, Dec 1 - Bellows Falls Opera House - Bellows Falls, VT
Sun, Dec 2 - Somerville Theatre - Somerville, MA
Thu, Dec 6 - Dibden Center for the Arts - Johnson, VT
Fri, Dec 7 - Middlebury College - Middlebury, VT - SOLD OUT!
Sat, Dec 8 - Higher Ground - S. Burlington, VT
Sun, Dec 9 - Higher Ground - S. Burlington, VT
What do you get when you put together a band leader from ViperHouse, a
veteran of Bread & Puppet's Circus, a band conceived of originally as
a tribute to the music of Sun Ra, all pulled together by an artist who
has recently opened shows for artists such as Emmylou Harris, Ani
Difranco, Shawn Colvin, and Richard Thompson? The answer is music
theatre called Hadestown.
Hadestown is set in a post-apocalyptic world that takes inspiration
from Depression-era America: the underworld is not the land of the
dead but an exploitative company town. Old-fashioned symbols of
poverty and exploitation are fused with a kind of futurism to prompt
reflection on just how much we've evolved (or devolved) as a society
since the 1930s.
Hadestown is also a love story that explores what becomes of the human
condition under the most tragic and trying of circumstances.
Hadestown is based around the timeless story of Orpheus and Eurydice,
bringing it into a contemporary context that is poetically, musically
and visually fresh. Written by Anais Mitchell, arranged by Michael
Chorney for the band Magic City, and directed by Ben T. Matchstick,
Hadestown teams up with Higher Ground to present an updated
incarnation of the show, with additional songs, arrangements, and
staging during a 'national' Vermont tour.
Tickets for each show are $20 advance, $23 day of show. Tickets for
all shows (except Somerville Theatre) may be purchased online at
www.highergroundmusic.com, charged by phone at 888-512-SHOW, in person
at the Higher Ground box office. For more information, contact Higher
Ground at 802-652-0777 or go to www.highergroundmusic.com.
TRIBE'S "OUTSIDE"
Rising From the Ashes
By Way of the Rock Band Soundtrack
A member in good standing of the Lewis clan sent this:
I had to play through half of the bonus songs to unlock "Outside" by
Tribe, but it was worth it. Playing a classic Tribe song was by far a
bigger thrill than any song I've played in Rock Band thus far, save
maybe for the Who's "We Won't Get Fooled Again." I can't particularly
say why, but maybe it's just that, amidst the Fallout Boys and
Flyleafs and other pop tunes, a niche college rock tune I like
actually made it into the game.
The only problem is, I now have to unlock it for vocals and bass and
drums. (Actually, I think it's already unlocked for bass, because
they're not separate.)
The cool thing about the bonus songs is they're almost all fun tunes.
Only the one directly prior to "Outside" struck me as tedious. Seven
out of eight ain't bad.
I really do think they've got themselves a massively cool game going
here, one that will top out Guitar Hero for anyone but the most
hardcore shred heads.
Now all they need to do is start making better guitars (which isn't
actually Harmonix's doing).
WE WERE ALSO SENT MATERIAL that spoke of MTV and Harmonix plans for
weekly releases of supplemental sountrack cuts for the computer game,
Rock Band. Evidently there is a great deal of interest among artists
in getting their recordings on the soundtracks of popular games, and
it is easy to see why. Many young people are really enthusiastic
about these games and the music that comes with them or is intended
for them. The piece we were sent spoke of some artists skipping radio
and MTV promotion and, instead, attempting to get their latest
"singles" included in the Rock Band catalog. Oh, brave new world! - Ed.
RACHAEL SAGE
Oodles of News
I AM RUNNING WAY EARLY. Don't get used to hearing this.
There is some technical advantage to my finishing up this issue before
I restart my computer. The less you know about the technical side of
this operation, the happier you will be. So you would be well advised
not to ask any questions.
Anyway, in order to save a good chunk of worktime and get this issue
mailed - or at least ready to mail - before rebooting, I am treating
the following material, which is most of the latest Rachael
Sage/MPress Records mailing, as though it was a press release.
Here it is.

sparkling performances by Rachael & her live band The Sequins (Dean
Sharp, Russ Johnson & Dave Eggar), as well as a slew of very special
guest musicians. (Our scheduled retail release date is May 2008, but
it'll be available to y'all for pre-order quite a bit sooner...)

SALUTE TO BROADWAY
At the Regent Theatre
Arlington, Massachusetts
LATELY I HAVE BEEN DOING a lot of reading about historic New York
City theatrics on and along Broadway. So the "Salute to Broadway" at
the Regent Theatre in Arlington, Massachusetts is right up my line. I
also grew up watching film adaptations of Broadway plays. Broadway
has produced some fantastic entertainment, and December 31 ought to be
an outstanding night at the Regent.
New Year's Eve--Monday, December 31 at 7:30pm
(Reserved Seats $32.50 and $27.50)
Bova Productions Presents....
New Year's Eve at the Regent--SALUTE TO BROADWAY
Vocalists Maria Anderson, Tom Edmonds, Peggy Ryan, and Tony Bova Sing
Broadway Musical Show stoppers, with Special Guest, Comedian Jimmy
Smith (aka "Brofather of Boston Comedy"--opened for Ray Charles,
Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight)
MY MEMORY OF THIS IS SO VAGUE I will probably butcher it every which
way. But there was once a big, award-winning spinoff of "Cheers," as
I recall, starring Kelsey Grammer. (Was it called "Fraser"?) And it
seems to me the spinoff included a lead character named Niles. If I
have it right so far, this pertains to the actor who played Niles. He
has been involved in a Broadway show and recently spoke favorably of
the stagehands, in connection with their recent strike. He described
a scene, not without some real degree of physical difficulty and risk,
where he was the person seen on stage but the stagehands, out of
sight, made it possible. It occurred to me that, in all the reading I
have done lately about Broadway theater, not one word of it has been
about stagehands. So I guess they are among the unsung heroes of one
of America's chief contributions to the popular arts.
A NEMS tip of the hat to the stagehands of Broadway.
What is believed to be the very first original American play was
written by a local man,
ROYALL TYLER,
who lived so nearby that, though I do not know the exact location, I
imagine it was withing walking distance of here.
Last thing tonight (Friday night), I will be reading about "The Black
Crook," a work that is generally considered to be the first fullscale
Broadway musical. It has been described by modern writers as
everything from a glorious delight to a total mess. I am eager to
look at a contemporary account, just a few hours from now. Evidently
"The Black Crook" is a revised telling of the story of Faust. It is
my belief that one of the stars was the same person who sang as a
member of the Alleghanians on a southern tour a decade earlier.
Better identifying information would be a big help, but this theory is
still looking pretty solid.
This may boggle the imagination, but one well-known musical play had a
song that actually commented specifically on my own personal
musicianship. Once I have dropped the following lines on you, you
will know that what I am saying is true:
If you're ever analytical
Sensitive or critical
You'll like it more
The farther back you stand...

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
