. . . . .

BRATTLEBORO, VT, December 14 - Work on this newsletter issue started
in the Thursday-Friday overnight. By that point, we had received very
little news. It is now Friday afternoon. Do you know how much news
we have received since last night? Not one word. It's beginning to
look a lot like Christmas.

To borrow from a well-known song title.

At other times of year I may be a bit concerned over this. But from
around Thanksgiving to maybe as much as two or three weeks after New
Year's, I'll gladly take as much or as little news as we get.

We may look a little less short of news than we actually are, because
of one uncommonly long press release at the end which was sent on
behalf of the New York Guitar Festival.

Back in the mid-1970s when the Boston club scene was getting recharged
with energy (and recharged with original music),

MR. CURT

seemed to be all over the place. A little later, he released several
singles under his own name. These 45s definitely fell somewhere in
the punk-rock range, and there was some really good music on them.
The label of one record said, parenthetically, "A Boston Pastiche."
If you do not already know where this leads, I would suggest
committing the phrase, "A Boston Pastiche," to memory. This
information could prove useful later.

Meanwhile, we are grateful to Mr. Curt every single time we put out a
newsletter issue. He owns the rights to the song, "Boston Lullaby,"
the lyrics of which appear at the top of our newsletters. His kind
permission makes it possible for "Boston Lullaby" to be our theme song.

Mr. Curt sent quite a bit of news from his corner of New England's
rock 'n' roll life, much if not all of which ought to find its way
into this very document.

At the same time Mr. Curt was working the rock side of New England
music, Boston was developing a very impressive country and
country-rock scene. One of the singers who was active on the circuit
at that time, from a Boston base, was actually earlier from this area.
When I go out running, I jog right past her old high school. Her name is

JOY GOODNOW.

We have lately received an inquiry for Joy's music. And it seems
worth mentioning here, as we have let our correspondent know, that Joy
once told me she had transferred some of her early recordings to CD,
which I took to mean that she burned them to CD-R though she did not
put it quite that way.

It seems to me fair to say that Joy's heyday was the 1970s, and she
was ahead of her times in those days. Joy was a diverse talent who
mixed into her own music quite a variety of influences, but she did it
in such a subtle way she probably doesn't get the credit she deserves.
In this respect, I think Joy may have been much like Dick Curless.

I have no information either way as to how much playing out Joy does
these days, but she still has an occasional booking in this area. She
has kin nearby; and when she comes here for family visits, she will
work in a show or two. Heaven knows, Joy Goodnow has plenty of fans
in southern Vermont.

An odd little quirk to Vermont's music history is that one of the most
famous musicians with a connection to this state is actually far and
away better known as an actor. His name is

RICHARD GERE.

Gere came to Vermont, long ago, to rehearse a rock band. And while so
doing, he had a change of mind and decided to commit to his acting career.

It seems to have worked out.

It is hard to imagine how it took this long, but we have finally added
ourselves to the

BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

mailing list. We should have been on it from the start.

Not long ago, I mentioned research into a show, "The Black Crook,"
which is generally accepted as the very first full-length Broadway
musical. Like me, you may have been puzzled by the name. The word,
"Crook," was probably intended to be cute: a little piece of street
jargon applied to a retelling of the Faust story. The "crook," as I
now know, was black in the same sense as Johnny Cash, "The Man in
Black." The show's title character dressed in black tights. "The
Black Crook" was by no means high art. Its main point seemed to be to
get attractive women on stage in tight and skimpy clothing. "The
Black Crook" will never be confused with the Gershwins' "Of Thee I
Sing." But one of the songs, "You Naughty, Naughty Men," was a big
hit and lived long on the vaudeville stage.

The fact that the name of

ROGER CLEMENS

appears in the Mitchell report does not absolutely mean he used
performance-enhancing drugs. There is a difference between evidence
and proof, and there is more than one standard of proof. The fact
that Clemens has denied this allegation, according to radio news
reports, also does not necessarily mean he didn't do it. We will
likely know more as time goes by. It is easy to imagine someone
thinking otherwise; but personally, I was very surprised to learn that
Clemens has been named and even more surprised to hear that Mo Vaughn
was also named. To borrow from some kid, decades and decades ago,
"Say it ain't so!"

Somewhere between 3:20 and 3:25 Friday afternoon, I noticed that the
day was starting to grow gloomy. But the sky is no more overcast than
before. It is just that time of year, with really, really short days;
and by half-past three in the afternoon, the day is already growing
late. But today is the (approximate) day when the calendar starts the
big turn back toward summer. I have never understood why this is
never expressed precisely. But anyway, changes in the times of
sunrise and sunset are not quite in sync with one another; and ABOUT
one week before the winter solstice, sunSET starts getting later. The
days, overall, do not begin to get longer for another week; but
afternoons are getting longer right now, even as we e-communicate. On
or very close to December 14, the calendar gives the long, hot days of
summer a first come-hither look.

MR. CURT
Uncut

Since drafting the preamble of this e-missive, I have decided to run
Mr. Curt's message in entirety. I hope he doesn't mind. It is WAY
too late to expect to get permission, and I plead fair use. But I
doubt he will mind, and he might even appreciate a little extra
circulation. This piece is LOADED with Mr. Curt news, and his many
fans ought to be really interested. Those in the know won't need to
have a Turbines reference pointed out. Here is the word, according to
Mr. Curt:

Happy howdys to all: Wah-hey, it's the holiday season so I'm giving
music. Trying to control my excitement as I breathe life into each
musical adventure. Fascinated by the frenzy amidst a bevy of
projects. Four to be exact...

>>> 1.) MR. C. ENSEMBLE's new CD is almost done, with mixing and final
editing on the horizon. We're doing "A Few Winter Gigs" to picque
interest and support. Stop by and say hi-ho to Marty, Bob Menepace, & me!

Sunday, December 16 - 6pm = The Listening Room at Right Turn - 299
Broadway - Arlington Ctr. With Salvatore Baglio / Bird Mancini /
Macey and Gilligan / Patricia Abreu / Jim Bailey. It's a benefit
hootenanny!

Friday, December 28 - 8pm = PERKS Coffeehouse - 685 Washington St. -
Norwood Ctr. With special guest: Frank Rowe. Our fave coffeehouse.

Saturday, January 19 - 8:30pm = Cantab Lounge Downstairs - 738 Mass.
Ave. - Central Sq., - Cambridge Marty White's Birthday Bash with
Salvatore Baglio / Bird Mancini / The Darlings / The Fighting Cocks.
Yikes - M. W. turns 50! Let's party!!

>>> 2.) Here's an anti-war group I stand and salute, while singing
within. A noble and worthwhile effort, bold but intimate and political
but humane. Two shows to check out:

T MAX PEACE CHOR-US >>> Saturday, Dec 8 @ 9pm at the
Abbey Lounge (3 Beacon St, Somerville--near Inman Sq,
Cambridge)

The End War Now DVD Release Party

The Peace Chor-us performs a full set of songs from
"Why Do We Go To War?" Other great acts on the bill
include The Liz Borden Band, The Cello Chix, Emily
Grogan, Michael Bloom, Tim Casey, and Bryan Kane. We
also have Reverend Richard Emmanuel to speak about the
woes of war and the positive things being done to stop
it.

T MAX PEACE CHOR-US >>> Saturday, December 22 @ 9pm
at the Cantab (738 Mass Ave Central Square, Cambridge)
The Noise Holiday Occupation Party
The Peace Chor-us performs a full set of songs from
Why Do We Go To War? The real highlights of the night
will come from the Andrea Gillis Band, The Russians,
and The Emily Grogan Band. Come celebrate with us.

The Peace Chor-us Band consists of Shawn Marquis on minimal drums,
Susanna Porte on cello, and T. Max on lead vocals and guitar. But
this group is really about the voices and message delivered, so expect
more of a gospel choir than a rock band. Chorus members are: Ruby
Bird, Diana Casado, Eleanor Ramsay, Emily Grogan, Sandra Miller, Billy
Carl Mancini, Mick Maldonado, Michael Bloom, Mr. Curt, and John Hess.

>>> 3.) Last winter and spring I took part in
recordings for a new country-folk singer, Lance Hatch.
His album, "The J Sessions", has just been released
and it's a charming collection of love ballads and
easy rockers. Just the thing for a warm winter
snuggle. He's currently planning some CD-release shows
for early 2008 and I will be accompanying him on my
trusty 12-string acoustic in a fine quintet called The
Flying Cowboys. Yup, always wanted to be a buckeroo!
Stay tuned for gig announcements.

>>> 4.) And, last, but not least, the Pastiche
sessions continue. We've got five songs started in two
studios and they sound pretty good! Many thanks to Ray
Boy Fernandes and Tim Casey for bringing us into the
present. Hopefully we'll have something to play for ya
sometime next year. This has been a slow process, near
and dear to our collective hearts. Past tense is over
(cause we want it)! Many kudos to Ken and Ron (and now
Brad)!

Phew!! Have a tremendous holiday season and best
wishes always!!!

THE LAST NEON NITE
(For Some Time)

If enthusiasts had their own Hall of Fame,

NANCY NEON

would be a first-round inductee. Unfortunately, it appears as though
correspondence from her, that I forwarded from one mail account to
this one, got lost somewhere out there in cyberspace. So all I have
is one of her e-mails, though it seems to me this is the one that counts.

Nancy is not only a world-class enthusiast, but she is also the Sister
Rosetta Tharpe of the tambourine and a go-go dancer par excellence.
(Look up Sister Rosetta Tharpe, or just ask Sleepy LaBeef.) Here is
Nancy's neonic note about the Neon Nite to end all Neon Nites:

Greetings, just a shout out to Alan and his readers that my December
15 NEON NITE at the Cantab will be my last one for a very long time.
Being a swan song of sorts, this NEON NITE will feature musical faves
of NEON NITE goers and of mine - CLASSIC RUINS w/BILLY BORGIOLI (12),
LYRES (11), LADY KENSINGTON AND THE BEATLORDS (10), MY OWN WORST ENEMY
(9). The cover is 7 bucks. JOEYBOY of RED INVASION will be DJing and
amazing us all with his impeccable taste!!! Though I'm saying goodbye
to the Cantab, please check out my OLD SCHOOL PUNK EXTRAVAGANZA at
CHURCH (WAS LINWOO0D) AT 69 KILMARNOCK, BOSTON ON FRIDAY, JAN 25 WITH
RICHARD BACCHUS AND THE LUCKIEST GIRLS / CHAZ MATTHEWS / RED INVASION

HAPPY HOLIDAYS BOSTON ROCKERS, smooches, MISS NANCY NEON xoxo...

JOHN COSTER
JC News for a Second Consecutive Week!
Imagine...

"A crazy snowy week! I'll be doing some of my songs and a number of
transformed wild old fiddle tunes with Mary Serreze at the Black Sheep
[in Amherst, Massachusetts] this Saturday night at 7PM or thereabouts.
We have been evolving a sound I really like, a lot of improvisation
with a solid groove. Harmonica, guitar, voice and keyboards. You can
hear some of this stuff at Johncoster.com. The real old rock and
roll! Stop by if you can. More shows coming up, but this is the
first time out in a while."

BRIEF ITEMS :

EDITH
The Band

How do I revere Carlene Barous? Let me count the ways. Long ago, we
received official word of the breakup of the Boston rock band,

EDITH,

from that outfit's very publicist. But lately I saw a listing for
Edith and wondered how this resurrection came about. In an
announcement of a show involving her own band,

TEMPER,

Carlene (the person) said this about Edith (the band):

"Edith ... local Boston original rock band

"Edith is: Karen Harris and her original 'Outfit': Jim Collins (bass),
Matt Magee (guitar), Scott Rogers (drums). Karen's a truly excellent
songwriter. NOT a new band. An established Boston rock band. They
took a hiatus. But were you there in the 1999? Right, overlooked. I
make it my mission..."

-- Carlene Barous, "Snow Is Happening..."
December 13, 2007

Carlene Barous to the rescue.

And

Mission accomplished...

GLENN EVANS
Of the Hodaddys

"Longtime Boston drummer GLENN EVANS has played with jon butcher,
johanna wild, jeanne french, the estes boys, ric ocasek & ben orr,
andy pratt, pf & the flyers ET AL. Now living in Florida, Glenn has a
new CD out by his surf instrumental group, 'HODADDYS,' on the MAD TIKI
label. Please go to hodaddys.com for info, or just 'keyword' HODADDYS."

Forthcoming Album

"New album coming soon! Hoping for March release."

-- The Stone Coyotes, "Shows, News," December 13,

DWIGHT AND NICOLE
"Songwriters in Blue" Series Returns

TO MY WAY OF THINKING, this announcement is just the teensiest bit
short of self-explanatory. But a search of our back newsletter issues
turned up nothing on the "Songwriters in Blue" series. And while I
recall the series' name, there is no way I could say anything about it
from memory. I am running this item, though, thinking that those who
go back a way with Dwight and Nicole may understand it as is. - Ed.

"[W]e are bringing our 'Songwriters in Blue' series back! We'll be
doing a weekly Thursday thing, often featuring some of our very
talented friends at NYC's Banjo Jim's (700 East 9th Street & Ave C)
through January and February."

THE JOSH BROOKS DUO
And New Tunes, Too

"This was going to be a quick note to let you know (with great
sadness) that the Blue Star Cafe in Winooski [Vermont] is no more as
of Saturday, and that as a result Kent and I will not be celebrating
the Solstice with all of you on December 22nd. However, I had to take
advantage of this opportunity to: 1) pass on some info, and 2) give
thanks. So here goes...

"First, the info. I have officially booked at Big Orange Studios in
Addison [also Vermont] with good friend Chris Clark for two days of
recording over the holiday break. I've got a batch of songs that are
ready to go, and for the first time have enough songs that I'll have
difficult choices to make. I'm thinking we'll turn it into a
CD-making reality show, complete with drunken trysts and teary
goodbyes. Or not. Either way, I'm thrilled to be working with Chris
again, and to have my trusty sidekick Kent on board. All I can say is
that this will not be the usual Josh Brooks record - I've got bottle
of Canadian Club and a brand new Gibson SG and goldurn it, I'm gonna
use 'em!"

-- Josh Brooks Mailing, December 13, 2007

THIS JOSH AND KENT DUO has serious potential. - Ed.

A Request From
RICK BERLIN

"We are asking you to lend your support to our work-in-progress film
JAMAICA PLAIN SPOKEN. Please join us THIS SATURDAY December 15th,
from 5:00-9:30 at JP ART MARKET for a unique auction and sale of
affordable works created by over 75 local artists. All 8 x 10's will
be sold at a fixed price of $50. Work by featured artists will be
sold in a silent auction. The evening also includes art, wine, food,
a cool raffle and goodwill, as well as clips from the documentary.
Hope to see you there!

"Best
Rick Berlin & Todd Drogy"

ONE OF THE TURN-OF-THE-TWENTIETH-CENTURY people I have been
researching resided in JP, and it surprises me that the houses on his
street appear not to have been numbered. Boston's population was
greater then than it is now, so it seems a bit surprising to see a
major Jamaica Plain thoroughfare being treated as a country lane. But
things change - sometimes a lot - and maybe the guy's street really
was something like a country lane back in those days.

By the way, to give some idea of the occasional difficulties of this
type of research, this JP man and his wife were living separately at
the time of the 1900 census. He was officially married, according to
census data, while she was officially widowed. She was the mother of
zero children: zero still living, while residing with her son. Go figure.

I once found a man who, according to the census taker, was the mother
of one child: one still living. - Ed.

GUSTER PLEDGE: NEW ALBUM,
MAYBE THIS DECADE
Remember, You Heard It Here First

"We're writing songs right now ... which means a Guster album is only
a few years away! (Or maybe sooner.)"

-- Guster, "Yukon Kornelius," December 7, 2007

SESSION AMERICANA
Tabletop People

This item is old business I suppose, but it explains better the
re-release of the "Tabletop" albums by Session Americana. It does, at
least, to my mind. Here goes:

"[T]he Tabletop Volumes 1 and 2 are available separately now with many
new tracks on each one. The Volumes are divided a little more
carefully along the 'family' vs 'adult' themes as well. Check them out."

-- Session Americana Mailing, December 11, 2007

NEW YORK GUITAR FESTIVAL

December 14, 2007
For Immediate Release

NEW YORK GUITAR FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES ITS
7th SEASON OF CONCERTS JANUARY 12 – FEBRUARY 6, 2008.

THIS YEAR'S EVENT WILL FEATURE FREE CONCERTS,
A NEW ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM, GUEST CURATORS,
MULTI-MEDIA WORKS, TRIBUTES TO BOB DYLAN,
HANK WILLIAMS, MERLE HAGGARD, LORETTA LYNN AND LEFTY FRIZZELL,
AND MUCH MORE.

"An epic event." —The Wall Street Journal

"A veritable guitar orgy." —Jazz Times

"A series that examines virtually every aspect of the guitar's
musical personality."
—The New York Times

Fresh off the heels of the enormously successful inaugural Adelaide
Guitar Festival in Adelaide, Australia, which drew more than 30,000
attendees, organizers for the New York Guitar Festival (the original
in a series of sister festivals, which also includes Wall to Wall
Guitar Festival) proudly announce its 7th season of concerts, January
12 - February 6, 2008.

With more than 25 performances by some 60 exceptional guitarists -
whose styles vary from jazz and classical to rock/pop, traditional and
avant-garde - the festival will explore the universal significance of
the guitar. Audiences will be treated to concerts ranging from an
all-day Guitar Marathon that focuses on the guitar's history in Brazil
to eclectic tributes to country music's biggest legends. A sure
highlight at this year's event, The "Royal Albert Hall" Project honors
the music of Bob Dylan, the most covered songwriter in history, by
reinventing his famed 1966 concert. In 2006, the Bruce Springsteen
tribute drew rave reviews and The Boss himself showed up to sit in.
This year's performances will be held at Merkin Concert Hall, The 92nd
Street Y, The World Financial Center's Winter Garden, Jazz Standard,
the Apple SoHo Store, and The Monkey. Featured artists include Jorma
Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), The Assad Brothers, Larry
Coryell, GE Smith (former music director of SNL), Teddy Thompson,
Stevie Jackson (Belle & Sebastian), Laura Cantrell, Marshall Crenshaw,
Toshi Reagon, and Jason Isbell, among many others.

The New York Guitar Festival, a not-for-profit arts organization, was
founded in 1999 by musician and producer David Spelman, who serves as
the festival's Artistic Director. By fostering emerging talent,
supporting innovative collaborations among outstanding artists and
commissioning new works, the festival endeavors to broaden the
public's appreciation for the guitar. The festival is presented with
support from Apple Computer, The D'Addario Foundation for the
Performing Arts, Avalon Guitars, WNYC Radio, WFUV Radio, WBJB-90.5 The
NIGHT, Guitar Player Magazine/Music Player Network, flavorpill.net ,
and Brooklyn Brewery.

In addition to producing eclectic concerts and radio broadcasts, its
Guitar Harvest series of recordings supports outreach programs in New
York City public schools. Spelman says "In raising scholarship
funding, the New York Guitar Festival, in partnership with the Lucy
Moses School at Kaufman Center, is able to provide guitars and musical
training free of charge. At a time when arts education is the first
to go in budgetary cutbacks, encouraging hope and inspiration through
music making is invaluable." The beneficiaries of the New York Guitar
Festival's scholarship programs are young students enrolled at an
innovative elementary school on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

CONCERT SCHEDULE:

Saturday, January 12 at 8:00pm – FREE OPENING NIGHT CONCERT
The "Royal Albert Hall" Project
World Financial Center's Winter Garden
Battery Park City, bordered by West Street, the Hudson River, Vesey

The "Royal Albert Hall" Project honors Bob Dylan's storied May 17,
1966 concert -- long the Dylan bootleggers' favorite, and released
legit by Sony on CD in 1998 -- which included material performed both
solo and with The Hawks (soon after re-named The Band) (and which
actually went down in Manchester, England, not London's Royal Albert
Hall). This FREE concert is the opening night of the 2008 New York
Guitar Festival and takes place under the glass atrium of the World
Financial Center's Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street (directly across
the street from the World Trade Center site), on Saturday, January 12
at 8:00pm. Performing their own arrangements of Dylan's songs in
sequence from the original show will be Laura Cantrell, Stevie Jackson
(Belle & Sebastian), Marshall Crenshaw, Oakley Hall, Nicole Atkins &
Lenny Kaye, Jason Isbell, Jim Lauderdale, Toshi Reagon, Freeman
(recently signed by RCA), Harry Manx & Kevin Breit, The Last Town
Chorus/Megan Hickey, Jesse Harris, Richard Julian & Jim Campilongo,
Kelly Joe Phelps, Chocolate Genius Inc. and others. Produced in
association with Arts > World Financial Center (

Radio and broadcast on 90.7 FM. www.wfuv.org

In our 4th biannual Guitar Marathon, the guitar's rich history in
Brazil will be explored, from renaissance and baroque to classical and
flamenco repertoire. The Assad brothers are today's foremost guitar
duo and have worked with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Paquito D'Rivera,
Gidon Kremer and Dawn Upshaw. They collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma on his
popular release, "Obrigado Brazil", a Grammy-winner in 1998, and in
2002 they won a Latin Grammy for their release "Sérgio and Odair Assad
Play Piazzolla". The programming will also include the world premiere
of a work commissioned by the NYGF. Composed by Stephan Crump, the
work will be performed by his Rosetta Trio. All-day tickets are $60.

The Music of Hank Williams, Sr.

With John Schaefer (Host), Jorma Kaukonen, Larry Campbell, GE Smith,
and Toby Walker. Taught by a bluesman known as "Tee-Tot," Hank wrote
and sung some of country music's best-loved songs. He achieved much in
his short life and his love for the blues lent his music a lasting
quality that has kept him in the spotlight more than fifty years after
his death.

The Music of Merle Haggard

With John Schaefer (Host), Jorma Kaukonen, Larry Campbell, Jim
Lauderdale, and Alvin Youngblood Hart. Carrying the mantle of country
music into the rock era, Merle Haggard is the embodiment of how it's
done right. With forty number-one hits in his career, Merle continues
to tour in his 70th year. Join Jorma Kaukonen and friends as they
explore the music that has kept us tapping our feet, singing along,
and occasionally crying in our beer.

The Music of Loretta Lynn

With John Schaefer (Host), Jorma Kaukonen, Larry Campbell, GE Smith
and Taylor Barton, and Laura Cantrell. American icon and songwriting
giant Loretta Lynn personifies the very heart of what country music
describes: hard times made good through sharing music. Her career has
been an autobiographical journey; she is truly one of the toughest
spirits in music. Jorma Kaukonen and a star lineup will reinvent
Loretta's very personal, folk-tinged music.

The Music of Lefty Frizzell

With John Schaefer (Host), Jorma Kaukonen, Larry Campbell, Jim
Lauderdale, Teddy Thompson, and Ollabelle. Over thirty years ago,
Lefty Frizzell left us with a legacy of country music that inspired
generations of singers and songwriters; Merle Haggard, Roy Orbison and
Willie Nelson all claim lineage to this early country and rockabilly
legend. Lefty's sound continues to be imitated today as we interpret
this legendary music on the concert stage.

In addition, New York Guitar Festival will host shows at the Jazz
Standard and The Monkey, with more to be announced soon. Stay tuned

IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS WHO WOULD BE interested in any of the items in
this issue, please forward this newsletter to them. Thanks! We
believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.
