TAZZA 'TEST
Details of Providence Songwriting Contest
Courtesy of Providencian Becky Chace

" ... I wanted you to know about a really cool event happening at
Tazza in Providence on Sunday nights between now and May.

"I'm hosting this big Contest that's sort of like an open mic and sort
of like 'American Idol.' It's really, really fun and I'm hoping to
use this list [the Becky Chace mailing list] to help spread the word.

"Here's all you need to know:

"If you are a songwriter/performer, come either this Sunday or next at
5pm to sign up, pay $5 to enter, give us your best song, and you could
win $2,000 plus a song in a Michael Corrente film. How cool is that?
The way it works is you enter one of the next two weeks of open
calls, then you may be picked to advance to a second round, and so forth.

"If you know people who you think might be interested, please forward
this email. All the details for the Contest are at

http://www.myspace.com/tazzacaffe

"It's rare that a club is willing to give away $2,000, so please
spread the word to your talented friends."

of Contest," March 5, 2008

LISSA SCHNECKENBURGER
A Song To Sing

Maine-Boston-southern Vermont singer/fiddler Lissa Schneckenburger
resides right here in this here town, Brattleboro, Vermont, or so I am
told, but I never see her. She is looking good, though, on the cover
of a CD we have just received. It is titled "Song." I haven't had a
chance to listen yet, but I am definitely a Schneckenburgerian
fiddle-tune fan. And Lissa S. has selected some fine pieces for her
new release. Her choice of "Young Charlotte" has caused "Fair
Charlotte" (normally two different names for the same traditional
American ballad) to run, without end, through my head. And I am
REALLY hoping the closing cut, "The Drowsy Sleeper," is the one I know
as "Awake! Awake! You Drowsy Sleeper." I love that song.

Lissa's supporting musicians include such standouts as fiddler Hanneke
Cassel, cellist Rushad Eggleston, and members of Nightingale, a trio
based in my very neighborhood. Corey DiMario is a regular in the
Lissa Schneckenburger Band and also in another favorite, Crooked
Still. And Austin Nevins, an electric guitar ace, I believe has the
honor and distinction of being a friend of my own e-friend, colleague,
and would-be jogging partner, Maria McLaughlin.

Eager to give Lissa's "Song" a few spins. Haven't been able to do it
just yet. But Lissa is terrific, and I have high hopes for her new
release. "Song" should put visions of dance-floors in the minds of
New England traditional music and folk-dance fans.

>>>

THE SAME PERSON WHO SENT US the new Lissa Schneckenburger CD also
sent a press release about a big charity auction. We copied the
release in full below. Though I have not had the chance yet to give
it the attention it deserves, I did notice that the list of artists
represented in the auction is headed by

DAVID BOWIE,

which ought to be a pretty decent attention-getter for most of our
readers.

DON WHITE AND CHRISTINE LAVIN
At Arlington's Regent Theatre

I AM ON A BIT OF A ROLL with the Regent Theatre's shows. The folks
there had something going having to do with "Alice in Wonderland."
Now, many, many years ago, the same Springfield, Massachusetts,
television station that hosted "Sherlock Holmes Theatre" - a terrific
series - broadcast a mid-to-late 1930s film, "Through the Looking
Glass." It was a surrealistic sensation across the nation. But for
some reason, I have never been able to find any information about that
motion picture ... until now. After seeing the Regent's "Alice"
announcement, I gave my "Through the Looking Glass" research another
shot, and I believe I found two library catalog records of the very
film. If this proves true, there could be more about "Through the
Looking Glass" in this newsletter. It was a total delight to watch,
and I would recommend it highly.

Then last night, the Regent showed a new film by Vermont's Jay Craven.
I would have to check the particular title; but I have kin who has
done technical work on Jay Craven films, and this may be one of them.

Next up for the Regent is the double billing of

CHRISTINE LAVIN AND DON WHITE.

Here is the Regent's account of this comic affair:

Saturday, March 8, 2008
Reserved Seats: $27.50, add $1 day of show

Planetary Groove Productions Presents...
Christine Lavin & Don White

Those who have attended the Funny Songwriters festival in the past may
have missed this show last year. Well Don White has chosen to go in a
new direction and perform in co-bill shows with special performers
that he loves. For this year's first such concert we have paired him
with the wonderful Christine Lavin

Happydance, n. [hap-ee dahns] "An impulsive, spontaneous jig of joy."
Xenophobe, n. [zen-uh-fohb, or zee-nuh-fohb] "A person unduly fearful
or contemptuous of that which is foreign, exotic, or out of the
ordinary." On September 18, 2007, Happydance Of The Xenophobe,
Christine Lavin's new topical, political, 13-song collection, that
will thrill the National Weather Service ("Here Comes Hurricane
Season"), delight Julia Child devotees ("Whipped Cream"), enrapture
caffeine addicts ("Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans"), but also irk
Priscilla Presley, the NRA, cigarette smokers, Faux News, and best of
all, Dick Cheney, was released on Yellow Tail Records. Christine has
also had a long and storied career as a solo artist as well as being a
member of the Four Bitchin' Babe

If you laugh and cry within the same ten minutes, you either need a
vacation or you are sitting in the audience at a Don White show. This
working class family man from Lynn, Massachusetts has emerged as the
thoughtful songwriter of the decade whose relevance to our lives is
evidenced by the powerful reaction he evokes at every concert. Radio
audiences, too, are not safe from the Don White experience. Valerie
Adams of WNCS Radio, Vermont said, "I've never seen anything like it.
Every time I play I Know What Love Is the phones light up like a
Christmas tree. Stereo Review Magazine called it "...A candidate for
song of the year."

"The audience went crazy for him. He's by far the best new performer
I've seen in a long, long time. Believe me, he's got it!" - Christine
Lavin

I AM AS PUZZLED AS I AM INTRIGUED by the really high level of
activity along the New England popular music circuit. Once again, the
amount of news that has been e-mailed to us this week is far greater,
quantity-wise, than what I can find time to look through and compile
for this newsletter issue. The scene is not behaving as though it is
in a recession. Yet "recession" would be an apt word to describe over
half of 2007. Here is a passage from our Issue 247, which was dated
November 3, 2007:

"The local music news slowdown that ran through the summer and well
into the fall was eerily recession-like. I suspect those things that
did not go well - or that at least came hard - for New England's music
community reflected broader problems with the United States economy.
But whatever it was that went on, we seem to be back out of it for the
time being."

Two weeks earlier, in our Issue 245, I noted a then-recent public
opinion poll showing that most Americans thought the United States
economy was in recession at the time, and I referenced a then-current
news story about Wall Street investors, collectively, looking for a
reason to panic. A thing that had them scared at that moment,
according to news reports, was the anniversary of a big sell-off.
Members of the New York Stock Exchange were frightened by a date on
the calendar. Moderate radio host Jim Bohannon, one of talk radio's
greats, often calls Wall Street a "head case." He is much, much too kind.

So we get daily news stories about how the United States economy is
slowing down while, week after week, what we see first-hand makes the
economy look to be humming right along. It is very hard and maybe
even impossible to understand what is going on.

We are all entitled to our personal opinions; and mine, for what it is
worth, is that something is seriously wrong with this picture and some
hard-nose investigative reporting by America's business and political
journalists is very badly needed.

I GOT CALLED AWAY MUCH EARLIER than expected - thrown a last-minute
detour - and I have fast run out of time. There is a fair amount of
news that I just can't get to reading and compiling. Going entirely
on memory, it seems to me that the news items which remain in our
inbox include these:

Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer has an upcoming engagement with the Boston
Pops. No joke. The Ten Foot Bride dances to the light classics.

Vermont singer-songwriter Josh Brooks has experienced a little time
delay in finishing his upcoming album; but he has written more new
material, so this news is not necessarily bad. We would offer him a
thumbs up except, as I recall, an ailing thumb was part of the holdup.

Session Americana out of Boston has announced the group's last show at
the beloved Vermont hangout, the Middle Earth Music Hall.

I have jotted these down according to memory and can only hope I got
them right. If any of these stories are still current next issue,
maybe I can work them in.

And there is more. This is just what I remember (or think I remember).

We are in the midst of a VERY busy spell. Perhaps big business can
learn from us.

SAL BAGLIO

Sal Baglio, a suspected Stomper, seems to associate with some rather
shadowy characters. One of these is the ever mysterious InfoMan, who

ONE OF THE MOST BASIC PUBLICATIONS coming out of New England's
popular music community is Pete Weiss' periodic newsletter. This

name an instrumental band after its author.

They have? Really? Well, alright...

Among the acts covered in the Pete Weiss Newsletter issue, No. 23, are
Temper, Bow Thayer, the Weisstronauts, and...

"JOHN HAYDON: Mixed John's new solo album 'Phantom Heart' at Verdant.

BEN PATTON
Forthcoming Album
Its Title Is Also Forthcoming

Ex-Burlingtonian, ex-Bostonian, ex-New Yorker Ben Patton let us know,
by a March 7 e-mail, that he has a new album. We are heartened that
he is not going to any commercial, self-promoting extremes ... you
know, like telling us the name of his record. He also said he is
working on some film music with ex-East German, ex-Brattleborian,
ex-Londonian Jaye Muller for a motion picture apparently to be named
later. So we know that Patton is alive, probably well, seemingly
hanging out in the Philipines, and working in the field of music and
cinema. His concert DVD with Jaye Muller, "5.05.05 Live," gave the
fullest account to date of his and their acts and is going to be a
tough release to beat. Time will tell whether the new record does it.

REBECCA PADULA
"Fire & Water" CD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rebecca Padula to Release Third Album

CD Release Show Saturday April 26 at 8 p.m. @ Hinesburg Town Hall
Hinesburg, Vermont, tickets $5, admission at the door only Vermont
singer-songwriter Rebecca Padula will release her third independent
album in April. Padula has been performing mainly as a solo acoustic
act in the Northeast for the past decade or so, but this project marks
a departure into a fuller rocked-up ensemble sound than her folk fans
are used to.

The CD entitled, "Fire & Water" features members of Padula's backing
band, bassist Mitch Barron and percussionist "Shrimp" and a host of
Vermont guest stars including: Gregory Douglass, Paul Asbell, Dave
Keller, Phil Abair, Jamie Masefield, Rik Palieri and Colin McCaffrey.

Most of the 14 tunes on "Fire & Water" were written by Padula with a
few exceptions. Vermont writers Carol Abair, Susannah Blachly and the
late Rachel Bissex also appear as songwriters. Blachly lends her
vocal and fiddle talents to the recording as well.

Padula currently lives in Hinesburg as does Barron and the official CD
release concert will have a hometown feel. It will be held Saturday,
April 26 at Hinesburg Town Hall at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.
The CD will also be available for purchase soon after that online at
www.CDbaby.com and on itunes.

"There is a definite Vermont vibe to this project," Padula says. "It
also deals with a lot of opposing ideas and conflicts - fire and
water, love and loss, red states and blue states. For me, what's more
interesting than polarized points of view is what happens in between
them when things get mixed up and real communication happens."

Padula holds a double degree in music and journalism from St.
Michael's College and has penned more than 40 original songs and
released two independent albums on her Sweet Bean Music & Media label:
"Time, speed & distance" (2003) and "Waterfront" (1997). She has also
written news stories for a number of New England newspapers, is a
documentary filmmaker and an advocate for free speech and independent
media. She works on the front lines of free speech at her day job in
public access television. Since January 2004, she has been producing
"The Instant Coffeehouse," a monthly half-hour public access TV
program that showcases singer-songwriters.

In 2007, she won the Vermont Peace Songs contest with her song, "We
Are Free," which appears on the new album. Her folk concert
documentary film "Margaret's Waltz," a tribute to Vermont folksong
collector Margaret MacArthur, was recognized as 2007's "Best
Documentary Event" by the Northeast Alliance for Community Media.

BRIAN VIGLIONE
A Dresden Doll Gone Nine Inch Nails

Hello Everyone ~

I am thrilled to announce the release of the new Nine Inch Nails
album, Ghosts I-IV.

http://cl.exct.net/?ju=fe2b157776670678701777&ls=fdf21578746403797412787c&m=ff27\
1c71736d&l=fed1167274640575&s=fe2111777267037d761278&jb=ffcf14&t=

I had the great pleasure this past December to work with Trent Reznor
and contribute some drum tracks to the new album. Trent really opened
the door for it to be a very creative experience and allowed him to
achieve what he needed musically, while allowing me free reign to
express myself and ideas on the drums.

Here's a little re-cap of that weekend:

Day 1:
Trent said, "I thought a fun art project for today would be to have
you put some things together to play on and we could improve some
stuff tonight. I don't really have room for a big drum kit and all the
mics here, but, let your imagination go and we'll help you piece
together what you need. When you get something together, we'll record
tonight. Go nuts, see you in a few hours."

So I put this together from stuff around his house, Home Depot, and the
grocery store.
It sounded cool as hell.

Day 2:
Trent said, "I'd love to record you behind a full drum kit, so today,
I'll send you and Alessandro to S.I.R. sound stage and you can just
set up and play whatever comes to your mind. Try to make it a mix of
styles and dynamics, loose to all-out playing. Give us a few
different BPMs for each beat you play with the click, and have fun."

So I did.

The room was HUGE and so was the sound which came from the drums.

When I got back home from the afternoon of recording, Trent mentioned
that he liked the sound of the junk kit recordings from the day before
and would I mind doing a little more. So I went back into the room
and put on the headphones and they said to me, "We're just going to
give you a tempo on the click, play whatever comes into your head and
improvise on it after you establish the basic groove."

I finished and hadn't even realized that I had just completed the drum
part to a song that they had already finished up. The next morning
they integrated my part into the song and it was a crazy feeling hear
myself integrated into the music of a group who've I've been a fan of
for years.

It was a great experience and hope you all enjoy the music.

(Alessandro, Lucy, and Sophie review the mixes. Photo by Trent)

History:

A 501(c)(3), IMA was founded in Northern California in 1986 by
June Millington and Ann Hackler. Millington, the former guitarist for
the 1970s all-female rock band Fanny, is critically acclaimed as one
of the best guitarists in the business. After the breakup of Fanny,
Millington was active in the women's music scene as a solo performer,
side musician, and record producer. Having been a groundbreaker for
women in music, Millington was acutely aware of the need for a support
system for women musicians. Hackler had been running the Women's
Resource Center at Hampshire college before teaming up with Millington
to found IMA. She had spent much of her academic career researching
and writing about, as well as teaching in, alternative education systems.

"IMA was founded on the premise that women deserve access
to

all aspects of the performing and recording industries," Hackler said.
"In
this studio and performance space, women will not have to settle for
anything less than the best."
Programming
IMA has offered thousands of women and girls the
opportunity
to learn about performing, recording and the music business through
workshops, hands-on intensives, and extended programming facilitated
by performing artists and music business professionals. Performers and
students have regularly benefited from access to IMA's performance and
recording studio space.
Since its move to a 25-acre historic farmstead in Western Massachusetts

in 2001, IMA has begun focusing its summer programs on girls and
young women. It's a serious rock 'n roll experience as girls, grouped
age
and experience appropriately, dive into song writing, arranging,
chart

writing, performance, and studio recording, while living on the IMA
campus. "They (summer program participants) experience the magic of
creating music," says Millington, "and the transformation is amazing.
On Day One, they are tentative and nervous, and by Day Four, there's
no holding back: they're rocking out!" Millington notes that the
girls' newly found musical self-confidence spreads to other aspects of
their lives as well.

Construction and Renovation

Five years ago IMA began converting the 100 year old "Big Barn"
on the property to accommodate its summer rock 'n roll camps,
year-round concert and workshop series, and recording studio. The
final stage of this half million dollar project is the construction
of the studio interior which consists of two iso-booths, a control
room and a post-production suite. The recording studio has been
designed by WSDG, Inc. the firm of internationally renowned architect
John Storyk, whose first studio project was Jimi Hendrix's Electric
Ladyland, and his wife interior designer Beth Walters. It will be
used as both a teaching facility for the girls who attend the Studio
Recording and Production Program, now in its third year, and as a
professional project studio. "IMA was founded on the premise that
women deserve access to all aspects of the performing and recording
industries," Executive Director Ann Hackler said. "In this studio and
performance space, women will not have to settle for anything less
than the best."

In addition to the eBay auction, IMA is also raising funds by
pre-selling studio time to interested artists at a greatly reduced
rate. You are encouraged to visit the website to learn more about IMA
and its programs, to see pictures of the studio construction in
progress as well as the full list of auction donors and items. On the
website tax deductible donations of any size are are as easy as
clicking through to Paypal. Donors of $10,000 or more will be honored
on the barn dedication plaque. The studio campaign has already
received its first $10,000 donation from the Bromley Charitable Trust.

IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS WHO WOULD BE interested in any of the items in
this issue, please forward this newsletter to them. Thanks! We
believe this is one of the main ways we pick up readers.

As a rule, we do not post SHOW LISTINGS. The reason is quite
simple. Though our name is the NEW ENGLAND Music Scrapbook, probably
an easy majority of our readers are based outside the six New England
states. The great majority of show listings would be of no interest
at all to the great majority of our readers.

We make exceptions when show listings are part of an item of more
general interest. CD-release events are great examples. For us, the
main point of an item of this sort is that an act has a new record.
The show being announced is of secondary interest to us - if that - as
far as the contents of our newsletter goes.

In the very few, truly exceptional instances where we post show
listings...

... Shows can be canceled, sold out, or even moved to another
date or location. We recommend checking the Web, calling ahead or
otherwise confirming details.
