BRATTLEBORO, VT, March 15 - There is much to love about the Irish, not
the least of which is their zealous annual celebration of one of my
people, my fellow Brythonic Celt, St. Patrick. A few of Patrick's
writings still exist, including a short autobiography, and these items
include some very valuable information.
Members of Boston's
DROPKICK MURPHYS
have managed to turn St. Patrick's Day and the time therearound into
their own Hometown (and Beyond) Throwdown. This year, the Guitar Hero
gang has added a new twist. According to a quite recent DKM mailing,
"[G]reat news for anyone into video games. 'Guitar Hero III' has
released a free DKM patch in celebration [of] St. Patrick's Day.
They're giving away gratis a bundle of three songs: 'Johnny I Hardly
Knew Ya,' '(F)lannigan's Ball' and 'Famous For Nothing.' More info here:

-- Dropkick Murphys, "St. Patrick's Day Weekend
Starts Today," March 14, 2008
THIS DKM ITEM SEEMS TO HAVE STRUCK right at the heart of the band's
favored annual celebration. We actually received several e-mails,
from various people - all of them disinterested parties - letting us
know about this announcement.
WHILE WE ARE ON IRISH MATTERS, let's work in a little plug for the
greatest Irish-American band, Solas, and their wonderful former lead
singer, Karan Casey. These folks, in addition to the Dropkick
Murphys, would make terrific listening this St. Patrick's Day Weekend.
The finest traditional singer out of Ireland who I have heard since
most of us first learned about Karan Casey in the 1990s is
PAULINE SCANLON
whose "Hush" CD on Compass Records is well worth checking out.
Pauline Scanlon is the person I have mentioned in the past as having
elements of a young Jeanne French look to her. - Ed.

JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT
Hitting the Road
"JMP is gearing up for a great run of dates. On Friday March 28, we
will return to one of our long time favorite haunts, The Iron Horse
[Music Hall in Northampton, Massachusetts], where we'll play one of
our first straight up concerts in a while. There will be plenty of
experimenting with new material. We will then continue to Fairfield
CT and The FTC Stage One where we'll perform the bands main focus of
late, the multi media performance, 'How Much Land Does a Man Need.'
Shortly after that, Jamie looks forward to reuniting with Mamavig
compatriots Frank Vignola (guitarist extraordinaire with David
Grisman, Mark O'Conner, Bucky Pizzarelli and Les Paul) and bassist
Gary Mazzaroppi.
"We are also excited to be headlining The Sterling String Fling
Festival (Sterling NY) later this summer!"
-- Jazz Mandolin Project, "JMP Spring Shows,"
March 11, 2008
I HAVE BEEN IN VERMONT FOR DECADES. Several of the finest Vermont
bands I have heard in all this time are active right now. Jazz
Mandolin Project is one of them. Makes a feller proud to be a Vermonter.
My mind just wandered off on a little tangent, wondering what it would
be like to hear two of Vermont's best current bands - Jazz Mandolin
Project and 35th Parallel - merge for a show and perform as a unit. I
could let my imagination run wild on this notion.

LATE IN THIS NEWSLETTER ISSUE we have copied press releases as well
as artist mailings which are, in some ways, similar to press releases.
Those that come to mind represent such diverse acts as
The Drunk Stuntmen
Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls
and

plus
Great Boston Burlesque Exposition and Vintage Fashion Fair

Friends, I have to stop work on this issue abruptly and unexpectedly.
I have done something not just uncommon, not just rare, but EXTREMELY
RARE. I have broken something. I hardly ever break anything under
any circumstances ever. But I just accidentally broke one of my most
treasured possessions. And though I will survive the experience, I
have to go deal with this now. For one thing, an apology is in order.
The remaining items that come to mind include one more from the
Dropkick Murphys plus an item from the western Mass. band, Fancy
Trash. And then there are whatever late arrivals there may be in our
main inbox. If any of these items are still timely next week, I'll
run them next issue. But now ... I've got to get going.

BRIEF ITEMS :
EILEEN ROSE BAND
"At Our Tables" CD
on Evangeline Records
RICH GILBERT, late of such unusually-named bands as Human Sexual
Response, The Zulus, and Frank Black and the Catholics, has been
picking at European tour stops in the Eileen Rose Band. I already
really liked Eileen Rose, but adding long-time Providence/Boston
guitar hero Rich Gilbert ratchets it up several notches.
These concerts
. . . ought to be
. . . . . . fantastic.
And as if this is not enough, Rose has some new album news.
"New Record, New Label
"I'm very pleased to announce that, as of today, AT OUR TABLES, is
available in Europe on Evangeline Records. Evangeline boasts a proud
and eclectic roster and I'm honored to be part of it. You'll find the
album (I still call them that) at all good record stores and at all
the major (and not so major) on-line shops. Those of you looking for
immediate gratification (is there any other kind?) can download it
right now by visiting ER on MySpace and using our brand new Music Glue
player gizmo. You get to listen to the songs a couple of times before
you buy. Fair enough, right?"

DROPKICK MURPHYS
Did anyone out there catch clips from "Shipping Up to Boston" by the
Dropkick Murphys playing in a recent episode of The Simpsons"?
Comments we have heard give the impression that this was not one of

episode a kick it badly needed. Who better than the Dropkick Murphys

GUSTER
Bringing Up a New Album
After a discussion having to do with Guster-member parenthood, our
Gusterian source of information added:
"But we're also well into the gestation process of another album, as
we spent the winter working up songs on a slightly out of tune upright
piano in Brooklyn. And believe you me it's not shaping up to be the
mellow dad-rock album you might expect from a band of expecting band
members. We're keeping it up. We're rollicking if not rocking."

WHEN COPYING AND PASTING press releases, one tends mostly to see the
tops and the bottoms of the releases and pretty much miss the whole
middle. So what I picked up from the press release of the Great
Boston Burlesque Exposition and Vintage Fashion Fair is quite limited.
One novelty it references is Boston's only professional, juggling
strong woman. Now, one of the nineteenth-century individuals I have
been researching is the single most important and famous individual in
the Burlesque Exposition folks field, New Yorker Tony Pastor. He is
widely considered to be the "Father of Vaudeville." And I recall from
a Tony Pastor advertisement that one of his acts was a cannonball
tosser. Unusual specialty, that one. I had jumped to the conclusion
that the cannonball tosser was a man, but now I must reconsider.
Tony Pastor died shortly before 1910. In 1918, one of his former
neighbors was leading a music ensemble called the Jazzirimba Band or
something very close to it. Can you imagine a group called the
Jazzirimba Band as early as 1918?
The state of Connecticut takes some credit for Tony Pastor, and one of
CT's notable contributions to the Swing Era, Tony Pastor, is said to
have been related. Beyond that, I don't know the Tony Pastor Nutmeg
State connection, except that his mother was a Connecticut native. So
maybe he was close to his family connections there.

THE ELEVATORS
Two Contacts
Why don't we just go on as friends
Live on the other side of the world
Someone to talk to you on the phone
When I'm alone with the music on
There was an early 1980s Boston/Northampton new wave band called The
Elevators. I, for one, was a very great fan. The Elevators'
"Frontline," to my mind, is one of the all-time greatest debut albums
by a rock band. (The Cars debut album, to which "Frontline" was most
often compared, would be tough to beat.)
Our contact with Tommy Myers of The Elevators broke off quite suddenly
about six years ago, and we heard nothing further from him. This week
we received a message that could have been clearer, but it would be
hard to interpret it any way other than that his health is of very
great concern. We will let you know if we hear anything further.
We have picked up a thing or two, over the years, here and there,
online about The Elevators' Zonder Kennedy. There are definitely
people out there who admire Kennedy's musicianship. For my own part,
I admire the name, Zonder. Lately, we have received a message from
some of his friends. If we pick up the latest Zonder Kennedy news, we
will certainly pass it along.
Elevators lyrics are not etched in stone. I personally slightly
rewrote the lyrics of one of my favorite Elevators songs, "Friends."
I have never performed it for anyone else, mercifully, since my
performing skills are meager at best. My musical ability, as
practiced in Vermont, is one of the main reasons so many people I know
live in Massachusetts. Anyway, my unique version of "Friends" has
only gotten a workout in my own personal company. But evidently The
Elevators, themselves, did a rewrite of the lyrics of their very best
song, "Stickball Kids," creating a Bunrattys version. If you know
anything about a Bunrattys version of "Stickball Kids," please drop us
an e-mail by way of the following Web page:
http://www.geocities.com/nemsbook/fred.htm
I heard of it from a highly reliable source, Mickey O'Halloran.
People who listened to the Elevators album really liked it. The
trouble is, not enough people heard the record. So it died in store
bins. But these guys were great.
I don't wanna just go on as friends
I don't wanna just go on as friends
I don't wanna just go on as friends
I don't wanna just go on as friends

EARLY VICTORIAN SONG TITLES
One of the great things about studying the early Victorians is that
they were very much like us. It is fascinating to see people so much
like us who are living in a tremendously different situation.
One of the threads of early Victorian culture that I am researching is
called, for lack of a better term, The Genteel Tradition.
The writings of early Victorians can seem to us quite syrupy. But
these were people who valued the sweeter things in life, and they were
quite willing to risk coming across as syrupy.
Some of this material I really like, myself. Henry Clay Work wrote a
song titled "First Love Dream," and it has always been a favorite.
He loves, he loves
Only me
"First Love Dream" is not a particularly well-known song even to
scholars who specialize in this period.
I just ran across a song title that is totally new to me. The name of
the lyricist has not registered on me yet. But the music was composed
by a man, William Vincent Wallace, who was a very famous composer of
operas in those days. The title, a new personal favorite, is
Pretty Things Young Lovers Say.
This is really innocent stuff. Nothing wrong with that.

Our CD's are out! Our DEBUT ALBUM Rose's Dream came in on Friday just
in time for our show at Bills Bar in Boston and they've been selling

But Will They Play "The Stripper"?
Three Local Bands Selected for Burlesque Event
CAMBRIDGE, MA - March 22, 2008 - The second annual Boston Burlesque
Exposition is taking place at The Hyatt Regency Hotel on the weekend
of March 21 through 23. The three day, two night event has all of the
things that one associates with burlesque: tassels, dancers, sequins,
rhinestones, and feathers. And this year it adds one more thing -
live music, from three diverse Boston Bands.
"Music is as much part of burlesque as the glamorous costumes or the
dancers themselves," said Scratch, organizer of the event. "But modern
burlesque is more than the brassy bump 'n' grind. That's why were
thrilled to have these three bands with us".
On Friday, March 21, The Electrolux Combo plays their brand of beach
party tunes as an appropriate soundtrack for The Expo's Welcome Party,
which takes place around the hotel's indoor pool. The four-piece band
features Brian Worobey on saxophone and takes its influences from
classic 60s instrumental performers like The Challengers, The
Ventures, and Link Wray.
After The Main Event (a burlesque competition between performers from
all over North America), on Saturday night, March 22, there will be a
performance by Adriel Azure & His Dream Indigo Orchestra. It's a
"Speakeasy party, suitable for any flapper, a sheik, or rum runner,"
said Azure. The 'Orchestra' consists of a dozen musicians and two
vocalists who play a surprising blend of styles - hot and gypsy jazz,
swing, with some tango and other international voices thrown in for spice.
Closing out the weekend on Sunday, March 23, The Emperor Norton's
Stationary Marching Band, provides suitably circus-y tunes to
accompany The Sideshow Ball, a collection of variety performers used
to sharing the stage with burlesque dancers. Highlights of The
Sideshow Ball include a husband and wife yo-yo team, Boston's only
professional, juggling strong woman, a woman who dances with snakes,
and "The Human Floor".

Tickets vary in price by event; admission to The Vintage Fashion Fair

DRUNK STUNTMEN
A Stunt Missive
Hello Stuntfans
As winter once again yields to our favorite time of year, and spring
draws closer we can be sure of two things. The Boston Red Sox are
hard at work in Fort Meyers, Florida, training and competing in the
Grapefruit league as they prepare for their 2008 season debut in
Japan. Yep, just like Tom Waits, baseball is Big in Japan.
The second thing, of which we can be sure, is that the first date of
the Drunk Stuntmen's State Fair Tour is less than a week away. They
will kick off their tour, Monday March 17 at Dutch Treat, 208 Main
St., in Franconia, New Hampshire. Showtime is at 9 PM. Come
celebrate St. Patrick's Day with us. Dutch Treat offers a full menu
including creative Dutch and American regional cuisine. If you are
going to honor St. Patrick responsibly and decide to stay overnight,
Dutch Treat also offers a full breakfast menu all day long.
To commemorate the beginning of the State Fair Tour, the show will be
mixed and recorded live on 24 track tape by Mojo Music Studio. This
Drunk Stuntmen show will be broadcast on Mojo Music Studio's
independent new music broadcast which features live original artists
from all over the world. We will keep you updated as to when the show
will air. Mojo Music Studio has quite a diverse geographical roster
of where the show can be heard by fans of live music, worldwide. For a

The song "Made of Wood," from the 2004 release, "Trailer Life," was
dubbed Song of the Day in the Americana Genre at Garageband.com on
February 25,2008.
A production crew from NBC's Today show paid a visit to the Pioneer
Valley this weekend to film a segment on the increasingly popular
Young @ Heart Chorus. With cameras in hand, representatives from
NBC's iconic morning news program attended the sold out performance on
Friday March 7, at the Chapin Auditorium on Mt Holyoke College campus,
as well as a practice in Florence, Massachusetts on Monday afternoon.
Bob Cilman, Y@H director, even got them to sing. Way to go, Bob!
Also on hand for the video shoot was a representative from Fox
Searchlight. The Fox Searchlight film Young@Heart, featuring our very
own Steve Sanderson and Freddy Freedom, is due to be released
nationwide Friday, April 18.
The art work for the Album State Fair has been delivered and approved.
The pressing of the album is in its final stages. Check out the Tour
Dates for information on the four CD Release Parties which will take
place at the Rt. 63 Roadhouse in Miller's Falls; the Rodeo Bar and
Grill, New York, NY; Church, Boston, Massachusetts; and finally the
Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton, Massachusetts. If you just can't
wait for the hard copy of the album State Fair to come out, the album
is available for immediate download from our website.
There is a new segment on the Message Board titled Ask Bow. For the
time being, Bow Bow, aka J. Scott Brandon, will answer any questions
you may have about the Drunk Stuntmen, or any other subject for that
matter. He is as hip as Ask Amy, and insightful as Dear Abby, but,
thankfully, just slightly more reserved than that saucy tart, Ask
Isadora. So fire away folks.
Until Next Time, Do your own Stunts.
