Most Versatile Instrument of Music
by KeithLancaster on Wed 06 Sep 2006 04:14 PM CDT
For almost twenty five years, our favorite truism has been:
"We believe the human voice is the greatest instrument of music ever
created."
The human voice conveys so many different emotions and is
unbelievably versatile. In mimicking instruments, Acappella has
journeyed through many styles and imitated a multitude of sounds.
We could site numerous examples, including the most recent
album, "Radiance," which begins with the emulation of a didgeridoo.
A few years back, Acappella, along with their back-up singers,
simulated the THX intro, commonplace in modern movies. It was
astounding to hear - just as Zac's vocal percussion solo elicits
an "I can't believe I'm hearing this" response.
Check out this choir that was assembled for this Honda Civic film in
the United Kingdom. It is fascinating!

Favorites to Shine at A Cappellastock this Weekend
Leading Utah A Cappella Groups to Share the Stage
with Vocal Performance Legends The Nylons
OGDEN
, Utah – Aug. 23, 2006 – Utah vocal performance favorites VoiceMale, T Minus 5 and The Cadillacs will take to the stage with Juno Award-winning a cappella legends The Nylons at A Cappellastock '06 on Sat., Aug. 26, at the Ogden Amphitheater. Now in its third year, A Cappellastock is the west's premiere a cappella music festival.
"We've performed with The Nylons before and are thrilled with the opportunity to be with them again this weekend," said Jared Allen of T Minus 5. "A Cappellastock '06 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see The Nylons – the greatest group in a cappella history – along with three of Utah's favorite groups."
The Nylons have performed more than 1,000 concerts across six continents over the past two decades. With seven gold and six platinum recordings to their credit, they are one of Canada's top international success stories. A cappella music showcases the human voice unaided by instrumental accompaniment, and The Nylons are international virtuosos of the art.
Over the past 12 years, VoiceMale has established itself as a permanent fixture on the a cappella circuit. They've performed for most every audience imaginable—from singing at intimate gatherings and private birthday parties to serving as headliners at major venues and corporate events.
T Minus 5 arrives at A Cappellastock as Ogden's hometown favorites. They are a nationally-acclaimed and regional award-winning a cappella group known for high-energy musical performances that combine contemporary pop, golden oldies, classic rock, a bit of country and elements of comedy.
The Cadillacs are one of the country's premiere doo-wop groups and a mainstay of the Utah a cappella scene. With their polished mix of male and female voices, they offer a uniquely diverse repertoire of music. The Cadillacs have won several national awards for their showmanship and for their ability to record doo-wop music with singular talent.
In addition to The Nylons, VoiceMale, T Minus 5 and The Cadillacs, A Cappellastock '06 also offers fans the opportunity to see The House Jacks from San Francisco, who bill themselves as the original "rock band without instruments." Utahns will recognize The House Jacks as the sound behind Lagoon amusement park's TV and radio jingles in recent years.
Last year's event, also held at the Ogden Amphitheater, drew nearly 3,000 visitors from across Utah and neighboring states. This year's event will draw upward of 4,000 fans.
Tickets for the show are available at www.acs06.com
or by calling 801-394-2545.
Reserved seating tickets are priced at $20 and general admission tickets are $10. The pre-show is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the main show beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m.
The Ogden Amphitheater is an outdoor venue located in the Historic Municipal Gardens on the corner of 25th Street and Washington Boulevard in Ogden. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at Ogden High School.

Pat,
That's an interesting take on our current situation, and we're glad
that you identify so strongly with the moosebutter you're familiar with.
In actuality, moosebutter has had nearly 40 singers since it was
created in 1999. You read that right, 40. We've been through
countless changes in style and singers, including most recently the
hiring of a new bass to tour with us full time. We currently have 4
"regular" singers and 6 "others" - great singers from other groups or
other careers who perform with us when one of the regulars has pressing
personal matters, when we feel like adding a fifth person for a special
event, or when there are two gigs at the same time and we need to be at
both places. We are increasingly facing this issue - someone wants us
to do a private show on the same day a public show is scheduled, and we
don't want to pass either of them up.
For our public shows, don't worry, you'll be seeing the moosebutter you
know and love. But for private shows, especially the work we do for
company parties, we essentially have multiple 'casts' for our 'show.'
It happens all the time - Broadway casts have understudies, shows like
Stomp! and Blue Man Group have dozens of performers that rotate in and
out of the cast, even professional a cappella bands like Toxic Audio
and The House Jacks have alternate singers for certain events. We are
certainly not trying to dissapoint the fans who are dying to see
so-and-so because he always does that amazing duck call while wearing
his speed-o (just an example, this doesn't actually happen).
So, to answer your question, isn't it the people in the group that make
the group? In a way, yes... JohnPaulGeorgeRingo are The Beatles... but
they originally had a different drummer, and they took another drummer
on a tour to Australia when Ringo was deathly ill.
Or is 'moosebutter' the music, and not the people? Is it more like a
production of Forever Plaid, with a script and characters, and you
could have any number of hundreds of people fill any part and as long
as it's good, it works? Could 'moosebutter' exist without four regular
guys? Could moosebutter work with the inclusion of... *gasp*... a
GIRL?!?!?!? Would I still have this skin condition if I stopped
rubbing my face against that toxic waste bin?
Let the debate begin!
Just as long as it doesn't turn into a Sammy Hagar/Van Halen sort of argument.
Tim, from moosebutter

"I applaud A Cappellastock's choice of Ogden City as a venue," said Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey. "I appreciate its commitment to help historic Downtown Ogden thrive as a center for culture and the arts."

Hey!
Quick note to Colorado fans – sorry about all of you who were excited
to see us in August… due to unforeseen travel plans, we’ve had to
cancel our August dates. HOWEVER we will definitely be there in
October! Hoo-aaaah!
Now:
1) meet Jorge
2) tour report
3) basic calendar
4) do I have an extra thumb?
1) meet Jorge
You may have heard the news; you may have heard the gossip; well, it’s
true, and now that he’s tromped through the wilds of North Dakota with
us we feel it’s high time to officially introduce our new bass
singer/vocal percussionist extraordinaire, JORGE JONES. Jorge
(pronounced George, and sometimes written that way but only by the
uninitianted) is from Amherst, MA. You really need to see him perform
– he’s excellent talented, and you’ll be amazed when you you realize
he’s only been singing seriously for 2 years, and percussing for less
than one. He just graduated from High School. Yup, a kid. But when
we were running auditions, he wowed us with his raw talent, performance
savvy, energy and overall coolness.
He also has an amazing afro. What’s not to love?
Jorge will be with us for a while, though you might see Glen, Jeremiah
or other singers pop up on occasion.
2) tour report
We had a tour, to Montana and North Dakota. Next we go to Wyoming and
Idaho. For details see the web site, or check your rubick’s cube.
3) basic calendar
We have shows. See the web site. No need to type them here, hey?
4) do I have an extra thumb?
I don’t remember.
See you soon!

Subject: Utah Arts Council / UPAT program - deadline July 21
To: tim@...
Tim -
I saw your name listed as the contact for the Utah a cappella listings at:
http://www.geocities.com/utahaca/Groups.html
... and hope you will be able to share this information with the local
community of performers.
The Utah Arts Council's annual auditions for the Utah Performing Arts
Tour program are coming up VERY soon. They are happening later in the
summer than in past years, and to save money the blank applications
were not sent out to 800 performers as in past years. So, in this
final week before the application deadline we have significantly fewer
applications than in past years. It may be a good year to get more
than one a cappella group on the UPAT roster.
Please share this "invitation" with your fellow performers, or other
artists you think might work well on the UPAT program.
Thanks!
---------------------------------------------------
This is an informal invitation for you to apply to be a performer on a
program sponsored by the Utah Arts Council. The Utah Arts Council
(UAC) is the official Arts promotion agency of the Utah State
Government, and includes programs for all types of visual, literary and
performing arts. In this instance, the program in question is the
“Utah Performing Arts Tour” (UPAT for short) which is designed to
benefit performers, presenters and audiences.
The UPAT program is NOT a simple grant to performers, but rather a way
to promote the presentation of live performing arts events around the
state by having the UAC financially subsidize events by selected
performers. Here’s how it works:
To help good performances happen all around the state, the UPAT program
runs annual auditions for performers wishing to participate.
Typically, about 100 performers and groups apply and about 30 are
selected to the “UPAT Roster”. Then non-profit presenters around the
state can present concerts with those roster artists and get a nice
financial subsidy from the UAC. This also ensures that performers will
be paid in full by the UAC after each concert. This process encourages
presenters to book concerts they might not normally attempt, as the
financial drawbacks of event production are minimized.
For performers, this mean the possibility of getting more bookings,
often in interesting rural Utah cities that would not normally be able
to produce concerts. Note: The UPAT program is not JUST for small
towns - any place works - but smaller communities are the most active
users. Also, being selected to the UPAT roster does not guarantee any
bookings, but does open the group up to the possibility. And it lets
the performer be recognized as being selected as a top performer in the
state. (Eclipse and Moosebutter have both been on the UPAT roster in
recent years, and got lots of bookings from it!)
This program is designed to promote more meaningful events in
communities that rarely have ANY live arts, so it goes beyond being
“just” booking concerts. Every performance booked through UPAT is
designed to include TWO elements: a normal concert and an extra
“outreach” event. The “outreach” can be a school assembly, an
mini-lecture, an informal nursing home performance or any other
outreach experience mutually agreed to by the performers and
presenters. Since this requires more total time than doing just a
standard concert, please consider that extra time when setting your fee
on your application. (Note: If you have a very large group, the
outreach does not need to include your entire ensemble.)
How do you apply? The deadline is coming right up, so act fast if you
are interested. Visit the UAC website and download the 4-page
performer application. It might take you between 30 minutes and two
hours to fill out the application, depending on your personal style,
but please remember that the selection judges REALLY want to get a feel
for what you do, so please give good, clean descriptions of your style
and performance details on the application to ensure that they
understand what you do.

While you are there, also check out the current UPAT roster which was
chosen at last year’s auditions. This will give you an idea of the
variety of offerings, and a general price range of those selected by
last year’s judges.
http://arts.utah.gov/performing_arts/upat/current_roster/index.html
What’s next? Submit the application, including a demo recording to
the Utah Arts Council, which organizes the auditions. They will be
screened by a select judging panel made up of Utah performers and
presenters. Usually, there are between 70 and 100 total applications
divided among the fields of music, dance and theatre, and about 30 to
35 of those are chosen for the roster. If you are interested in
applying, but can’t make the July 21 application deadline, contact me
or the UAC a.s.a.p. But the audition panel process is scheduled for
early August, so late or incomplete applications can not be considered
after August 4th.
Any questions?
Good luck!

The 1st years for these things are great opportunities to make some
waves and add to your resume - competition is usually pretty thin, and
you can gain great experience and good fans by doing these.
