Drumming, dance & percussion from around the world & around the block. Village Mandala is for all levels, beginner to intermediate, and advanced. Come learn & share rhythms and instruments focusing on improvising. We share rhythms (and melodies) at an easy pace, and encourage trying out new 'toys' and grooves. We also often have dancers from different traditions participate with us such as Blue Stars of Tanit, Roses of Shalimar,Anjum, Nika & The Dancing Belly, Shahira, Atea, Troupe Melangees, and a number of soloists and guest performers. WHAT EXACTLY IS A DRUM CIRCLE?
Drum Circle n. <Drum, v. to play drums, Circle, n. a group of individuals sharing a common interest, activity, or achievement> 1. An informal music making experience. 2. A diverse group of people playing drums together. 3. No experience necessary, not a performance. 4. A vibrant, joyful, participatory event.
Village Mandala has performed in parades, community centers, schools, churches, Ren Faires, special seasonal events and fund raisers. We invite you to share your time and contacts with us as we grow our network and host various workshops, teachers, performers, and interesting events. We believe drumming & dance is good for the Spirit!
We feature rhythm, dance, and musical artists from many traditions, including but not limited to African, Middle Eastern, Polynesian, Latin, Afro-Cuban, Indian, etc. We have collaborated with Ayo Ayedemi in the Closing Ceremony of the World Festival of Sacred Music at Santa Monica Beach(see links pg).
Jah-Amen Mobley also provides instruction for students interested in djembe and djun-djun. Other musical instruments are always welcome, and extra drums & percussion instruments always welcome:extra drums & percussion instruments are usually available.
